The shocking drug scene among Japanese students in Beijing Shukan Hoseki 8/10 By Mark Schreiber 北京の日本人学生の間での、衝撃的なドラッグの実情 週刊宝石8/10号 By マーク・シュライバー
"I've been using a straw to snort heroin. It's easy really to got in Beijing.. The price is about 300 yuan (3,000 yen) for 100 grams." 「
So says a 23-year-old Japanese exchange student at the Beijing Language Institute. His campus is located 12 kilometers out of the city and there is little shopping to be had nearby. Recreation for students is limited to getting drunk, playing computer games, sex or shooting drugs, the latter of which can supposedly be obtained in a village to the west of Beijing largely populated by minority tribes, such as Uigurs. The student tells Shukan Hoseki at least half of his Japanese classmates are also indulging in the drug..
It sounds impossible to believe, but there are plenty of facts to support these claims. On Feb.19, a 21-year old Japanese coed from Osaka went into shock from the effects of drugs and was taken by ambulance to the Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The autopsy determined her windpipe had gone into convulsions that caused internal bleeding. The incident was hushed up, and the media reported it as a death from illness.
#3 A male student at the school tells Hoseki, "On the night she died, I was one of two one's who broke into her room after I heard she was acting strangely. She was lying unconscious and wasn't moving.
"A few days later, her father came from Japan. I heard that when the father reprimanded the African coed student his daughter had been room- ing with, she broke down in tears".
A month later, two Japanese coeds and one male student at the same institute were arrested for permission of drugs and deported. A stuff mem- ber at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing says police made the arrest while the girls were pressured by aggressive Uigur merchants at the market place. The girls said the Uigurs tried to force the drugs on them. Their fathers flew to Beijing to protest their subsequent expulsion, but the school stood by its decision.
#4 China is in the throes of a serious drug epidemic, notes Hoseki. In Yunnan Province, bordering on the notorious "Golden triangle", 466 drug dealers were executed during 1994, and 2.8 tons of drugs seized. The prob- lem has also spread to other provinces, including Guangdong and Fujian.
Although seemingly aware of the draconian punishments that may await drug violators in China, many Japanese students find the easy availability and price of the drugs, which go for as low as one-fourth the price of those sold in Japan, to be irresistible.
#5 According to Yoshiro Hata, author of a guidebook for students in China, there were about 11,000 Japanese studying in China as of 1994. As China's economy liberalizes, the country find tuition paid by foreign students a good source of hard currency. The mass media reports of the "rush" by Japanese companies to invest in China has also mesmerized young Japanese into visualizing opportunities for future careers.
The majority of these students, however, find their ability in the Chinese language to be insufficient to advance to full-fledged university-level stud- ies. Often, they have problems in communication and turn to recreational drugs out of loneliness and boredom. As if their drug problems weren't enough, reports have also surfaced that Japanese students are being deport- ed from China at the rate of two or three per year after testing positive for HIV.
#6 Shukan Hoseki soberly concludes that while fellow Japanese might be willing to tolerate the students' misbehavior as "the indulgence of youth," it's more than likely that people in the host countries are being served up reminders that, half a century after the end of the war, there are still plenty of Japanese who engage in brutish and barbaric behavior when away from home.(M.S)
ttp://www8.atwiki.jp/mainichi-matome/pages/713.html //(注:"honey pot"とはハチミツを入れる壷のこと。 // //be caught with your hands/fingers in the tillというイディオムがあって、in the tillというのは会社とか組織のお金のことで、それを盗んでつかまると言う意味。
1999/04/04 'Pussy' preaches how to get the most out of the old fella
Sunday Mainichi 4/11
"Grip his penis in your hand and, starting from the base, rhythmically rub it up and down. At the same time, place your left hand beneath his scrotum and lift it gently while rotating it from side to side."
Back in the seventies, Yasushi Narabayashi authored a how-to book for men entitled "How to Sex." Its somewhat ungrammatical title aside, the work became a million seller almost overnight.
Similar reading matter for females taken more than two decades to catch up. But last February, Date House published a work entitled "A Sex Manual for women on How to Enjoy Men." Its author is a 29-year old woman writing under the nom de plume of "Pussy Tamami." The Pussy should need no further explanation. "Tamami" is written with characters unmistakably intended to convey the meaning of "balls" or "nuts."
"I wanted to dispel some of the misconceptions that women had been given by men," Pussy explains to Sunday Mainichi. "More than that, I wanted to give women the confidence to take a more positive approach to sex."
1999/04/04 'Pussy' preaches how to get the most out of the old fella
Pussy researched her book in the most direct manner possible. After giving up her virginity at age 19, she spent much of the next decade pillowing, bedding, tabling and flooring men of all nationalities, colors, shapes, ages, with foreskins clipped and unclipped, and widely varying levels of experience.
"Some prudish older men have scolded me, saying, 'What will happen to the future of Japan if women all go around sucking men to get them hand?' They think women shouldn't be allowed to take the lead. Some high school girls who do hooking on the side have told me they've been scolded for the same reason. If it was me, I'd throw their complaints right back in their face," she chuckles.
Sunday Mainichi notes that further evidence of women's openness toward sex can also be found in their newfound interest in battery-powered sex aids. Minori Kitahara, director of a shop called the Love Pence Club, notes that from around the latter part of last year women began making more inquiries, asking,"Have you got something I can use to make my guy feel better?" She recommends they try using a vibrator on men's nipples and other sensitive areas to arouse them.
There years ago, Kirei, a woman's magazine, started a department entitled "Vibe Monitor," in which readers were invited to relay their experiences with vibrators. Ignored at first, the column has started to receive as many as 30 contributions a month from readers.
1999/04/04 'Pussy' preaches how to get the most out of the old fella
"We offer a small gift in exchange for their giving impressions over the telephone," says an editor. "So far we've run stories like,'My boyfriend and I put a dildo to use while riding on a late-night bus.' They really come up with some weird anecdotes."
Last June, B&R Planning, an adult video production company, set up a new department to market to females. Tapes are rented out on a membership basis. Currently, the company boasts about 800 members, and has been growing at the rate of 30 new members per month. Its present stock of videos, with such titles as "Strange fulfillment" and "Full-body hard lesbian," numbers 91.
"In the past, men showed adult videos to women as a means of teaching them, or to encourage experimentation," PR spokesperson, Rika Saito, tells Sunday Mainichi. "But women are watching them now as a way of feeding their own masturbatory fantasies.
"I think we've come to a time where women are able to satisfy their sexual desires on their own."
"Japanese men only know women via their own male perspective," says Yasushi Narabayashi, the aforementioned author of "How To Sex." "A lot of men say they've grown bored having sex with their wives. But female sexuality is like a bottomless swamp; it can never be totally depleted. So I advise men to refine thier techniques by absorbing as much knowledge as they can about female sex." (MS)
1995,09,17 Lock up your sons! Loose women are proliferating Hot Dog Press 9/25 By (TI) Takeshi Ito
They are weird. Not only do they look loose, their minds are also loose. Their ways of thinking and behavioral patterns are nothing short of radical by traditional standards. Hot Dog Press takes a penetrating look at this incomprehensive new breed.
To start with, the magazine, catering to libido-driven young men, gives a name to the group under focus -- yurui onna (loose women).
These women, reminds the magazine, are readily identifiable by their loose and suggestive uniforms consisting of cut-off T-shirts or tank tops, tight mini skirts, men's briefs partially exposed by intentional unzipping of the skirts' front buttons and "leg warmers," or loose-fit socks.
Aged 14 to 18, these teen-agers have values that correspond with their looks. According to Hot Dog Press, they have no qualms about making love with a new acquaintance, but abhor the idea of having a steady boyfriend. They have a habit of breaking promises at the last minute but are perfectly guilt-free.
The magazine adds that their economic sense is bizarre, thanks to "papas" or male patrons twice or three times their age who buy them expensive brand clothing and accessories in exchange for dating them or giving them sexual gratification. There is even a sub group called "Chanelers" who won the monicker for co-ordinating Chanel bags and sunglasses with loose fashion, informs Hot Dog Press.
In the feature, loose women are analyzed from many angles. According to Hot Dog Press, a magazine that has always tried to analyze and pigeonhole women for male readers in need, loose women are the latest reincarnation of trend-conscious girls.
Just a year ago, they took a different identity of kogyaru, known for carrying beepers and making profits by selling school uniforms and used underwear to fetishist shops.
The same high-school girls became loose at the beginning of the year under the effect of increasingly popular reggae and house music, insists the magazine without explaining the relationship between music, fashion and behavior.
Known for its practical hints, Hot Dog Press offers many suggestions for young men hopelessly attracted to loose women by quoting the elusive girls.
"I can't trust those guys who smoothly pick up room keys at the front desk of love hotels," reveals Reiko Katsumata, 15."They should act a little shy."
Seventeen-years-old Shinobu Nodera disagrees. "Just tell me you want to sleep with me. I like the direct approach," she says. "Or,I can call tere-kura (telephone clubs) and find a sex partner myself. There are many ways for me to secure a man when I want one."
this incomprehensive new breedという表現ですが、文脈でいくと、(読者が)理解できない新人類となるのが 自然ですが、理解力のないという意味のincomprehensiveという言葉が使用されています。

Osaka shop sells products made from marijuana Friday 6/10 By Takeshi Ito
In a tiny shop corner crowded with apollo caps, por- traits of Bob Marley, accessories and narrow jagged leaves stands a middle-aged man with arms folded across his chest and a pipe sticking out of his mouth. He is Ko'ichi Maeda, 44, the owner of a new boutique in Osaka's tren- dy America-mura district. Merchandise pictured at this shop might appear ordinary at a glance, but its not. Its rare, verging on illegal, reminds Friday.
#2 According to the magazine, the newly establishment "Taima-do"hemp shop sells imported clothing and ac- cessories made from the grass popularly dried and used as a recreational drug. Friday says Maeda imports almost all his textile products from the United States as mariju- ana is not available here under a law that strictly pro- hibits its use for any purpose.
#3 Owner Maeda is a die-hard marijuana advocate who has authored a book on his beloved plant. "I bought a wallet made of marijuana when I traveled to the United States a year and a half ago," recounts Maeda. "The idea for this shop came from that purchase. In Japan, marijuana is automatically associated with illegal drug usage. But that's not correct. In the U.S. is plenty of mer- chandise on sale made from marijuana."
#4 "Thomas Jefferson was growing marijuana at his farm and had a plant which he used to make paper. He wrote a draft for the Declaration of Independence on paper made 100 percent from marijuana." The authority adds that marijuana can also be used to produce a gasoline substitute and medicine to cure headaches.
The magazine discovers that the boutique is just a part of Maeda's larger plan for rectifying what he regards as popular misconceptions about the "harmless"and"useful" plant. His next goal is inaugurating the Japan Hemp Party. He is hoping to run for a House of Councilors seat in the next election and launch a campaign for revision of the Hemp Control Law.
1995,07,16 A glimpse into the Sokka Gakkai's activities abroad AERA 7/17 By Takeshi Ito 創価学会の海外活動を垣間見る AERA 7月17日号 By イトウタケシ
With the sound of a gong,a congregation numbering more than 150 began to recite the mantra slowly in unison -- “Nam myo ho ren ge kyo.Niji seson.Ju sanmai...” Most of them know the 30-minute-long invocation by heart.
This is Santa Monica,U.S.A.,and the congregation is almost entirely non-Japanese. In one of the five reports comprising an 11-page feature on Japanese religious groups' evangelistic efforts overseas, AERA offers a rare glimpse into the Sokka Gakkai's activities in the United States.
The report, complete with an eye-grabbing picture of Caucasians and Hispanics joining hands in prayer, first presents data. A quarter of a century after kicking off its evangelistic mission in the United States, Sokka Gakkai today claims some 300,000 adherents. More than 80 percent of this total are U.S.citizens,including a rising number of second- and third-generation believers raised by parents who follow Sokka Gakkai's teachings.
AERA introduces one Los Angeles family to demonstrate that the lay Buddhist organization is there to stay. The family is headed by a 48-year-old Caucasian,a former YMCA employee who in the early 1970s tried sutra chanting for an entire week and found his wish had come true -- an end to the military draft. Now,he and his equally devout Caucasian wife are parents of five children, all Sokka Gakkai believers.
The magazine quotes their oldest son,21,as saying, “I've never been to a Christian church, but my Christian friends are all living gloomy lives because of their sense of sin.” This family celebrates Christmas as a secular year-end get-together.
AERA informs that Sokka Gakkai's American devotees are no longer engaged in aggressive street-corner canvassing as they did in the 1970s and the early 1980s, when the religious group's canvassers frequently approached total strangers in supermarkets and coin laundries and passionately urged them to come to a “discussion meeting."
This controversial method of initiation, known as shakufuku, met its share of criticism in the United States. In the early 1980s, many American parents asked the Cult Awareness Network (CAN),a Chicago-based counseling organization, for advice on how to rescue children allegedly coerced into Sokka Gakkai.
CAN representative tells AERA that Sokka Gakkai seems intent on improving its public image in the 1990s, but adds that her group is continuing to keep a watch on the lay Buddhist organization's questionable activities.
AERA reminds its readers that a number of U.S.researchers regard Sokka gakkai as a “cult,” an extremely negative label the organization is working hard to discredit. A spokesman for Sokka Gakkai's U.S.branch informs the magazine that his office is suing U.S media which call the group by that name. AERA avoids the delicate question and closes the nonjudgmental article with this disclosure -- the Sokka Gakkai is planning to establish its own university in California to educate young American believers.(TI) AERAは多くの米国の研究者が創価学会を「カルト」とみなし、 組織はその極めて悪いレッテルを剥がそうと必死になっていると読者に指摘する。

She recom- mends they try using a vibrator on men's nipples and other sensitive areas to arouse them.
Three years ago, Kirei, a woman's magazine, started a department entitled "Vibe Monitor," in which readers were invited to relay their experiences with vibrators. Ignored at first, the column has started to receive as many as 30 con- tributions a month from readers.

[その6] "In the past, men showed adult videos to women as a means of teaching them, or to encourage experimentation," PR spokesperson, Rika Saito, tells Sunday Mainichi.
So I advise men to refine their techniques by absorbing as much knowledge as they can about female sex." 1998,12,13 Int'I crowd getting off on Hiroo's ‘Dolce Vita’ orgies Shukan Gendai 12/9 By Mark Schreiber インターナショナルな連中が「甘い生活」(※)乱交パーティーに熱狂 週刊現代 12月9日号 By マーク・シュライバー
You wouldn't believe what goes on some weekend nights in Hiroo. Neither did a reporter for Shukan Gendai, until he saw it with his own baby browns. It seems that swank residential neighborhood in Tokyo offers Japanese and expatriates prurient recreational delights that would be home on the set of an X-rated film.
To give readers a peek into the goings-on at the establishment reputed to be the “best of its kind in Tokyo” Shukan Gendai secured the services of a reporter from a magazine covering the “pink” trade. He made the scene on a Saturday night in late November accompanied by Keiko, his 25-year-old girlfriend.
Phoning the establishment after arriving at Hiroo subway station, he was directed to an apartment building a short distance away. At the door, a hulking employee gave him a careful once-over before permitting him and his companion to enter.
“It costs 5,000 yen to join,” the doorman explains. “The charges are 4,000 yen for the first hour, and 1,000 yen for each hour after that.” The couple was admitted to a dimly illuminated room measuring about 33 square meters. After finding a seat on one of six white sofas in the room and ordering drinks, they awaited the arrival of other couples, which included both Japanese and foreigners.
Just after midnight, a Japanese male clad in the black garments that identified him as a denizen of the Roppongi district remarked, “It looks like a lot of the people here tonight are first-timers. Actually, it's the first time for me too.”
His date, a curvaceous gal bearing a marked resemblance to “Race Queen” model Reiko Takashima then smiled, stood up, thrust her hands up under her skirt and yanked down her panty hose. She quickly proceeded to peel off her G-string and remove her bra, revealing a spectacular body. She then sat on the floor facing the rest of the customers, legs bent at the knees to form a letter “M,” in a position that left nothing to the imagination.
“You. Come join us,”the man formerly in black(but now stripped to his boxer shorts) gestured to another male customer, who, shedding his garments, eagerly abandoned his own date for a chance to apply fingers and tongue to the body of the Takashima look-alike. The threesome were soon intertwined in a rapturous embrace.
Watching the Japanese inspired the foreign couple to begin some heavy necking of their own, and soon the male's organ -- by this time engorged to dimensions that Shukan Gendai describes as analogous to a half-liter PET bottle -- had gained the admiring glances from the other participants. Partners repeatedly changed, and between moans of ecstasy, the sound of condoms being ripped from their packets could be heard.
Fully impressed, the reporter and his companion departed after 3 a.m., leaving behind the man in black, his lady friend, and their newfound pals still going at it. “Tonight it really went well,”say the unnamed business's manager.“ Tokyo has about 10 places like this for couples, but a lot of them are cheap and sleazy. I think their owners just started the businesses because they were getting bored. So the closing times also vary.”
If you're feeling adventurous and can find a partner who's willing to go along, writes Shukan Gendai, then you too,can see how the other half plays in one of Tokyo's ritziest neighborhoods.
1994.06.19 Some married couples are paying each other for sex Shukan Gendai,6/26 By Mark Schreiber
"We have a cup set next to the bed. Whenever he puts in a 10,000 yen note it means OK to 'do it' that evening." 「
"High-heel Momoko," a 30-year-old female personality from Osaka, has been married for one year. The custom of her new husband paying for his conjugal rights, she tell Shukan Gendai, was put into practice from the very beginning of their marriage.
2 "Some people might call this 'home-grown prostitution,' but for us, it's completely natural. When I dress up in the kind of lingeric he likes, I charge him an extra 1,000 yen," she adds. "He pays up without a complaint."
Her "earnings" from sex go into a fund that eventually paid for the couple's vacation in Hawaii.
"A new bride feels like she is giving something away for free," Momoko explains. "I have a daytime job, and come home feeling pretty worn out. Our lovemaking seems a lot better when I get paid something for it."
3 "I was a little put off at first when she suggested I should pay for it," says Momoko's husband Masahito Kobayashi, making a slightly pained expression. Now I've gotten used to it, and I'd say it definitely helps keep our love life from getting into a rut.
"The tricky part is the timing of when to put the money into the cup. I like to have a drink before dinner, and a couple of times I was too tipsy to pay up before we made love.(He giggles) Whenever this happened, I always found 10,000 yen missing from my wallet the next morning."
4 Gendai quotes a Shinjuku-based sex therapist about a Tokyo cou- ple he consulted. Arguing persuasively that the going rate for sex at a "pink" establishment is around 30,000 yen, the wife convinced her husband of three years that to pay 10,000 yen for sex with her was a real bargain. Eagerly embracing the new system, they soon saved up 240,000 yen and were supposedly making plans to purchase their own condominium with the money saved.
5 Perhaps even more interesting are the growing number of wives who pay their husbands to perform their marital duties. One wife, sus- pecting her spouse of three years was having an affair, announced her plan to halt payment of his monthly allowance. Instead, she told him she would dole out 10,000 yen for each act of intercourse. This strate- gy helped rekindle the flame in their marriage.
6 The "typical" pattern of rapid decline in frequency of couples' sex after marriage, especially following the birth of children, has led to the recent phenomenon in Japan of "sexless" couples, Gendai notes. Extracting payment for services rendered tends to adds a sense of excitement to what for many was an otherwise routine duty, and as such deserves praise, not criticism, for adding spice to life at home.
7 Tetsuya Tsuji, a social psychologist and marriage counselor, notes that it is becoming so common for both husbands and wives to have outside sexual partners that many are viewing it as a natural occur- rence. "In a few more years, we may come to the stage where the notion of marital fidelity is laid to rest once and for all," he ventures.
If it ever comes to that, Gendai asks, what forms are couples' sex lives likely to assume? (MS)
Seven years have passed since young Iranian men started to arrive in Japan in search of work following the end of the Iran-Iraq War. The num- ber of Iranian visitors has totaled 300,000 by now,but we are still ignorant of these "strange neighbors." It's time to get to know them, insists Spa!
The magazine's 10-page feature on Iranians in Japan is comprehensive and concrete, covering many aspects and quoting a lot of informations. The article begins appropriately with statistics. Spa! informs that about 4,000 Iranian men are flying into Japan to work every year and about 20,000 are now working illegally following the expiration of their visas. SPA!
According to Spa!,contrary to the widespread view, most Iranians who come to work in Japan are not from poor families. Many of them are mid- dle-class university or college graduates. "They come here for money because the dollar sells at extremely high prices on the Iranian black mar- ket. They earn yen here, exchange it into dollars and make a killing when they go home," explains Toshihide Aikawa,a freelance journalist. SPA!
" But they are not here because they can't make a living in Iran. Many of them own big houses back home. They live well." Aikawa adds that many Iranians despise Japanese residential conditions and living standards and want to leave as soon as they reach their savings target.
But it takes months, sometimes years to accumulate a target sum. While in Japan,Iranians live modestly. They tend to stay home watching Japanese TV or visiting Iranian friends when they are not toiling at work. One reason for their shyness is the desire to avoid unnecessary spending, but many live in a closed world because they find people and customs in Japan too weird.
"When I first came here,I thought all Japanese women were prostitutes,"Mr.M.,a four-year resident, remembers. "In Iran, only prostitutes leave their skin exposed like Japanese women do."
It is rather well known that many Muslim visitors keep away from Japanese food because pork is used in a very subtle fashion. But many Iranians do not even accept Japanese clothes. Why? "Japanese trousers look unhip," notes Mr.M. "We like baggy pants with a plenty of room around the thighs and narrow cuffs. You can't find them in Japan.I ask my mother in Tehran to send me a new pair over whenever I need trousers."
But not all Iranians are stubborn nonconformists. Spa! informs its read- ers that there are also assimilated Iranians who eat pork, drink alcohol, buy women and ignore daily prayers.
"Some of us suspended prayers and fast- ing," observes Mr.H. "because, our Japanese co-workers and friends get angry if we ask about pork in a meal every time we eat together." Photojournalist Tsuyoshi Nishiyama estimates the ratio of liberal Iranians in Japan who drink alcohol at about 10 percent.
Iranian men are also struggling to keep their conservative morals about women.Mr.B. informs Spa! he is doing his best to keep away from Japanese women because he want to marry an Iranian woman who shares his Islamic values. Spa! reports Iranian men are overwhelmingly polite and square. SPA!
They blush at questions about sex and denounce adultery. Feeling that these harmless men are widely misunderstood (the magazine's earlier survey on Japanese women found that Iranian men were the least favored international date), Spa! listens to a 27-year-old Japanese woman dating an Iranian.
"Before I met him," she recalls, "I used to think Iranians were dreadful. But soon I learned that they are well-mannered,cheerful and kind people." The informant reveals that her boyfriend is so considerate to tell her that he doesn't want to take her with him when he goes home because he doesn't want to see her suffer in a very different culture.(TI) 「彼に会う前は」彼女は回想します。
#1 Murphy's Law of Japan 1994,03,13 ASCII Publishing By Mark Schreiber
Readers are no doubt acquainted with Murphy's Law, which states, "Shippai suru kanousei no aru mono wa, shippai suru"(If any- thing can possibly go wrong it will.) But since last July, things have been going anything but wrong for ASCII, the Shibuya-based pub- lisher of computer books and software. That's when it marketed a Japanese translation of the original English work by Arthur C. Bloch. The book has already sold over a million copies. (If anything can possibly go wrong it will.)
#2 On Feb. 28, ASCII launched sale of a sequel entitled Zoku:Maa- fi no Housoku. The 235-page work (price: 1,200 yen) is made up exclusively of wacky laws, theorems, axioms and postulates con- tributed by Japanese enthusiasts of the famous law who are deter- mined to show that things can go every bit as wrong here as they do in the United States.
While it remains to be seen if this work will eventually be trans- lated into English and start contributing to Japan's foreign trade deficit, what is certain is that Japan is providing to be an apt pupil of the science of Murphology. Read on, and discover the many ways for things to go wrong in Japan.

In an atrocious incident earlier this month,a nine-year-old girl died after receiving a fatal blow to the head from a falling fire extinguisher. She was hit by the unlikely flying object as she walked out of a high-rise condo- minium in suburban Osaka, where her family lives.
While no definitive evidence has yet to surface, police investigation up to this point strongly suggests that a pair of grade-school boys in the neigh- borhood dropped the extinguisher from the top of the 19-story building. Informed sources note it is next to impossible to hit a target by dropping an object from that height.
But how can children be so unthinking to drop an extinguisher from a building? Unable to understand,Shukan Asahi asks educational experts how this incident could have happened. Education critic Toyokichi Endo reminds the magazine that children like mischief.
But in the old days, children knew enough to refrain from drop- ping a dangerous object from a building.Endo tells Shukan Asahi that present-day children have little ability to imagine the consequences of their actions. He attributes their weakened foresight to a lack of opportunities to learn acceptable behavior through experiences with playmates.
Professor Masashi Fukaya of Shizuoka University agrees and warns; "Children no longer can tell right from wrong.Incidents like this one(the incident in Osaka) can happen at any condominium in Japan."
Fukaya's assertion is based on his research. He found that junior high- school students have become much more forgiving of questionable acts in the last decade.
"This tendency to allow wrong deeds is breeding bullying, which in itself is nothing new,but bullies today don't know when to stop and this creates problems. The knowledge of right and wrong used to act as a brake. But children no longer have that knowledge." Isamu Kakimoto,a director of a psychological educational institute, tells Shukan Asahi that children have lost not only their ability to tell right from wrong, but also the capacity to listen to others, obey orders and re- strain their actions.
"Children of today are extremely domineering and vio- lent," observes Kakimoto, who worked as a junior high-school teacher for 30 years.
"They act according to what they crave for. When they cannot have their own way, they either scream or turn to violence. They have not gone through the process that teaches them human behavior and social norms."
Shukan Asahi closes the report with another horrifying suggestion-- children of the 90s can easily kill."There is a saying that grownups should not meddle in children's fights. But this saying doesn't apply any more," asserts Kakimoto."Children of today fight to the point of killing the oppo- nent unless adults stop them. They can't imagine what might happen."(TI)
1995,05,28 Strong parallels between AUM,Soka Gakkai revealed Shukan Jitsuwa 6/8 By Masuo Kamiyama オウム、創価学会の間で納得な類似性が明らかに 週刊実話 6月8日号 By カミヤマ・マスオ
Once upon a time in Japan, a new religious group sprang up under the guidance of a charismatic leader. It built sprawling facilities at the foot of Mt.Fuji and created its own kingdom, in which it appointed top leaders to such posts as the "Minister of Education,""Minister of Construction,""Minister of Propaganda" and "Minister of Military Procurement." It engaged in scathing denunciations of rival religious groups. Members ran for seats in the Dict. Large monetary offerings were an obligatory part of belonging. And disillusioned members bold enough to try and leave it were roughed up,threatened, followed on the street and subjected to a variety of harassment that resulted in numerous clashes with the law.
If anything, writes Shukan Jitsuwa, the number of incidents involving this group far surpasses the acts of the relative newcomer AUM Shinrikyo.
The group's name is Soka Gakkai. The members of the "value-creating society,"whose unofficial numbers incorporate at least six million households in Japan, were shocked recently by the revelation that their Chairman Emeritus,Daisaku Ikeda, had been targeted for assassination by AUM's"Interior Minister" Tomomasa Niimi. Before Niimi could go through with the attack, however he inadvertently exposed himself to the sarin he had intended to use on Ikeda and had to undergo emergency treatment.
Masatomo Yamazaki,a former legal counselor for Soka Gakkai, tells Shukan Jitsuwa that comparisons between the two religious leaders reveal some remarkable parallels. "Asahara told AUM followers he was the 'last savior of the century' and 'the final sole survivor';to his adherents,Ikeda is the 'one true Buddha.'
Both men are driven about in luxury limousines. Asahara's activities are administered by a 'Special Affairs department'; Ikeda's by the 'No.1 General Affairs section.' Both groups follow the practice of having believers consume the scraps left over from their leaders' meals. And close similarities can also be found in both men's tendency toward being suspicious of almost everyone, as well as their fondness for female companionship and preoccupation with money."
But that's not all,Shukan Jitsuwa also notes that Soka Gakkai has also made efforts to extend its mission to Russia and other foreign countries, browbeats followers into making large donations, has attempted to cultivate academics and placed its spies inside government organizations.
The scenes of police searching AUM facilities came as a major shock to Soka Gakkai. Ikeda reportedly ordered his legal advisers to consider the implications that any new legislation may have on his group. Not surprisingly,Soka Gakkai is said to be totally opposed to revisions in the law, using its political influence and other measures to block any passage.
One side effect of the scrutiny directed towards AUM is that to avoid drawing further attention to itself. Soka Gakkai appears to be relaxing its campaign against harassment of priests and lay members of Nichiren Shoshu, the parent Buddhist seet that excommunicated Soka Gakkai several years ago.
Even more fearsome to Soka Gakkai than a nerve gas attack against its leader, Shukan Jitsuwa suggests, is it revision in the law governing the activities of religious bodies. The Buddhist lay group,it says,is likely to pull out all the stops to prevent such a move from taking place.(MK)

#1 Japan recruits romantic otaku geeks to revive economy
Innocent love, Sunday Mainichi (8/7) claims, could restore Japan's economy to the heights it reached until coming to a grinding halt in the 1990s.
Japan's "pure love" boom has stirred up the murky marketplace like little else to have come onto the horizon in recent years, with the promise of trillions of yen.
"Densha Otoko," which tells the story of shy otaku dweeb's attempts at wooing the heart of a beautiful young woman, has been a huge hit, selling over 1 million copies in book form, spawning a movie that has already attracted over 1 million theatergoers, a top-rating TV series and a call girl service. It has also sparked a huge increase in sales among places related to the story, like Benoist, a Tokyo tea room that has seen sales triple since it featured in "Densha Otoko" and Hermes cups, which was the product that gave its name to the book's heroine.
#2 "Densha Otoko" and its tale of innocent love follows on from the huge following attained from "Winter Sonata," the maudlin South Korean TV program that spawned a huge market that has drummed up an estimated 250 billion yen in Japan and South Korea over the past couple of years.
According to the Hamagin Research Institute Ltd., Japan's "moe sangyo," the term given to describe the otaku-dominated market, is about 88 billion yen.
"Unlike markets for necessities, the 'moe' business derives from sales of products that people don't really have to have. There are a lot of people out there plowing large sums into hobbies, and there's still plenty of room for them to spend even more," Hamagin's Shinichi Shinano tells Sunday Mainichi.
#3 "One private think tank has estimated that Japan's otaku population is about 2.8 million. If only half of them fell in love, the economic effects would be enormous, with dating alone likely to generate about 330 billion yen," Kadokawa says. "That sum alone would raise the GDP by 0.1 percent. If the otaku ended up getting married, it could also go a long way to solve problems created by Japan's low birthrate and aging society."
Kadokawa adds that otaku have already made a tremendous contribution in the market for not-so-pure love by bolstering the deriheru call girl business, which is said to generate an underground market of some 1 trillion yen.
#4 "Since regulations were placed on the adult entertainment business in 1984, the trend has been for the soapland market to get smaller. Now, the flesh trade's most popular businesses have shifted toward deriheru call girls instead of the highly regulated brothels and other types of massage parlor," Kadokawa says. "These businesses are also attracting large numbers of lonely, elderly clients, who pay the workers for a chance to have a bit of conversation more so than for anything physical. With Japan becoming an older society, this sector is likely to grow even more as time goes on."
#5 What is it about love that makes people prepared to shell out their hard-earned cash? Manga artist Mayumi Kurata thinks she knows.
"I wouldn't say it applies to everybody, but you get a certain warmth when you open the purse strings and buy something like clothes," Kurata tells Sunday Mainichi.

Tokyo is home to many small, specialist libraries. One of the most pecu- liar among them is the Meibo Toshokan(List Library) in Shinbashi. The facility, the only one of its kind in Japan,is stocked with internal-use-only lists of personal data obtained from anonymous sources.
Operated on a commercial basis, the library avails otherwise confidential data for a fee to members and outside users who wish to photocopy the lists. Shukan Asahi introduces this unknown data house popular among the desperate.
Those in dire need of information include parties on both sides of the law.
According to the magazine's article, which quotes Meibo Toshokan's founder and director Takeo Tamura, both the AUM Shinrikyo and police have been users.
The cult once bought a list containing names and personal data of 30,000 university students majoring in natural sciences from Tamura's facility while investigators from the Metropolitan Police Depart- ment frequently visit in search of personal data that can help them in crimi- nal investigations.
According to Tamura, exposure of many criminal activities by AUM during the past six months have resulted in a sharp rise in the number of visitors from the mass media. They come to his library looking for tele- phone numbers and addresses of people who used to study or work with AUM executives.
Other leading clients, notes Tamura, are real estate agents and university seniors desperately looking for a job.Tamura informs Shukan Asahi that securities companies used to be major clients, but they stopped visiting for information in the wake of the burst of the economic bubble.
According to the magazine,Tamura's facility presently owns about 10,000 lists which contain names and personal data of about 150 million people.
Naturally, some of the lists are more unusual than others.More peculiar ones list such unusual groups as housewives who shop at smaller department stores, karaoke lovers, women managers of hostess bars in Ginza, participants in matchmaking parties and those who refused to pay NTT.
Tamura tells Shukan Asahi that he often has little idea what his needy customers buy the data for. As examples of some of the odd ones,Tamura cites the acquisition of a list of female company presidents by a leading construction company and procurement of a roster of salaried workers planning to purchase a house by a men's clothing manufacturer.
What Tamura does know from experience is that lists of women are more valuable than those of men--at least among those who pay him to see and copy lists.Tamura reasons that women's tendency to keep their personal information secret contributes to higher value of lists supplying such data.
Tamura will upgrade his data service this month with the commercial launch of a composite list of 3.3 million Tokyo residents complete with their address, phone number, data of birth and place of work.
This original list, which Tamura compiled from hundreds of source lists,is intended to help mail order companies reduce mailing expenses.
The list business pio- neer says he will limit users to library members and visitors with re- spectable backgrounds such as schools and listed companies. Tamura is glad to explain the intended use when a listed person visits(TI)

Bugging phones is nothing new in diplomatic circles Shukan Hoseki 11/9-16
'The New York Times' scoop last month that the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency bugged telephone conversations Minister of International Trade and Industry Ryutaro Hashimoto had with the heads of Japan's leading automakers came as a big shock to many naive Japanese who have always assumed the United States a fair partner.
But wait a minute, reminds Shukan Hoseki, wiretapping is extremely com- mon practice in diplomatic circles, and if Japanese government officials did no counterbugging of their own,it's their fault, notes the magazine in a four-page article designed to enlighten the reader about how to prevent leaks.
Quoting many security experts,Shukan Hoseki cautions against the lack of awareness among the Japanese."You might think that wiretapping or informa- tion theft is a disgraceful act,"asserts Toshiyuki Shikata of Teikyo University. "But in Europe people think that the fault lies with those who neglect to protect their communication links. There is no sense of guilt involved in wiretapping."
Shikata,a former Self-Defense Forces inspector general, goes on to suggest that practically all Japanese embassies are planted with wiretapping devices.
Another informed expert,a Japanese professor at a U.S. university, quotes an anonymous insider and suggests that the CIA has planted 60 top agents deep in the heart of the Japanese government and industries.
An American journalist working in Japan, name withheld, endorses this the- ory.The journalist tells Shukan Hoseki that the CIA's nonofficial covers,or agents disguising themselves as civilians, are engaged in secret missions at local subsidiaries or branch offices of major U.S. computer manufacturers, food makers, banks and securities companies.
The source reminds the maga- zine that the level of current U.S. intelligence activities in Japan compares with that in the Soviet Union before its demise.
"There is no country like Japan where information is everywhere but noth- ing is done to protect leaks,"notes diplomatic critic Takarao Arai. He argues that The New York Times' disclosure confirmed that the CIA is keeping under surveillance all key political figures and industry leaders in Japan.
A source with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry admits that someone is wiretapping his ministry and reveals that he and others try not to mention spe- cific figures when they discuss confidential matters over the telephone.
But in the midst of diplomatic negotiations, they all lock themselves up in a hotel room to plot strategies, and under these circumstances it is extremely hard to go back to the ministry just to use secure lines.
"They should know better.Only Japanese bureaucrats use phones at hotels," deplores the aforementioned university professor. 「
He informs the magazine that the whole world laughed at the total lack of common sense when Hashimoto and Foreign Minister Yohei Kono held a strategic discussion in a room right next to the U.S. Trade Representative's office during their visit to Washington for Japan-U.S. auto talks in September 1994. "That's virtually the same as saying we don't mind being listened to,"laments the professor.(TI)

According to Shukan Jitsuwa, the telephone hotline run by the "California Women's Legal Center" has been flooded with calls from Japanese women claiming to be victims of physical abuse by their husbands. Roberta Ikemi, a lawyer who works at the center, tells the magazine that "Since the arrest of O. J. Simpson, the mass media has raised the public's awareness over the issue of domestic violence. However, there's still a lot of impertinent information being disseminated, such as the idea that men are also the victims of domestic violence."
Shukan Jitsuwa cites statistics from the U.S.Department of Justice that show that males instigate 93 percent of the cases of violence against a partner. About 4,000 women a year are killed by husbands or boyfriends. Women killing their spouse is about one tenth of that figure.
Ms.Ikemi notes that the problem is particularly severe for Hispanic and Asian women due to the immigration law granting permanent residence, since many of these women fear that leaving their husbands will result in their loss of U.S.visa status.
At the Asia-Pacific Family Center in Los Angeles, the number of cases of Japanese women seeking consultation due to household violence passed 40 in August. One 27-years old woman, who became engaged to a 32-year old American while studying in the U.S., soon discovered that her new husband was a mama's boy who demanded she do everything just like his mother. Discord ensued and the husband demanded she sell the condominium her parents had purchased for the couple as a wedding gift. "Give me the money from the sale," he threatened. "or I won't sign your permanent residence application. And if I don't sign, you'll either have to leave the country or face arrest."
Other Japanese women, their faces still bearing the marks of severe beatings, have come to the center claiming they are being held as "sex slaves" and pleading for advice on how to secure a green card entitling them to permanent residence. The source of the problem, Shukan Jitsuwa points out, is that since November 1986 a new provision in the immigration law requires that the foreign spouse remain married to a U. S.citizen for at least two years before application can be made for permanent status. The card must then be renewed after 10 years. This, the magazine claims, gave individuals so inclined a "license to make out abuse" and led to a special provision, enacted in 1990, allowing for green cards to be renewed when evidence, in the form of a police report, is submitted, even when the husband refuses to sign the application. But some battered Japanese wives have not been married long enough to come under the provisions of the law.
"Moves are now under way to persuade congress to revise the law to enable people to apply for green card status on their own behalf," says a representative of the Asia-Pacific Center. "The situation regarding family abuse has become especially severe for Asian women. The sentiment that a wife is nothing more than her husband's property is just as strong in America as it is in Japan."
PM claims five-knuckle shuffle, not wedlock, helps secure grip on power
Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's legendary lewdness was on show once again at a recent formal meeting for the vice-ministers of all the national government ministries and agencies, according to Shukan Gendai (6/24).
Just about anybody with a connection to Japanese politics is well aware of the prime minister's propensity for profanity, the men's weekly says.
He got his chance to display his dirtiness during the meeting with vice-ministers after Health Vice Minister Masao Akamatsu spoke to the group about how he had spent the previous day handing out free condoms as part of an AIDS awareness campaign.
#2 Koizumi butted in on Akamatsu's speech, pointing out the irony of the closeness between the Japanese pronunciation of condom -- kondomu -- and the phrase "kondo umu," which means to "give birth soon."
Koizumi continued with what he seems to have thought was a bit of fetus filter fun.
"You know they used to call them 'hygiene sacks?'" Shukan Gendai quotes the prime minister telling the much younger vice minister. "We used to blow them up and play with them like they were balloons."
Koizumi, the men's weekly says, then proceeded to spend about 30 minutes telling jokes about condoms while the mostly male vice-ministers sat and listened. Economy Vice Minister Akira Matsu, the only woman present at the meeting, remained silent throughout.
#3 Once he'd finished bouncing his rubber jokes off the vice-ministers, Koizumi turned his attention to dirty diplomacy related to former Russian Prime Minister Yevgeny Primakov, who the premier had met in the days just prior to the meeting.
"(Primakov) got married to a woman more than 20 years younger than him. He says that's what makes him so powerful," the magazine quotes bachelor Koizumi saying. "Now, in my case, my power comes from the fact that I HAVEN'T been married for more than 20 years." Political pundits say that Koizumi's crudeness is known throughout Japanese political circles. One Diet member the weekly doesn't name recalls meeting Koizumi not long after he assumed the premiership in April 2001.
#4 "Not long after Koizumi became prime minister, he came over to me and said, 'Gee, you're lucky. You're free. Ever since I've become prime minister, all I've been able to do is this.' He was doing a gesture for masturbation. I was a little shocked. It was, after all, the prime minister doing that," the Diet member tells Shukan Gendai.
Political commentator Harumi Arima agrees.
#5 "Koizumi has been saying that his manhood barely functions anymore and that he urgently wants to use it," Arima tells Shukan Gendai. "Koizumi is due to retire in September and there're rumors flying everywhere that he will get married soon after leaving the post, with all sorts of probing around to try and work out who his new bride will be."

"No,no!What are you trying to do?" questions a defenseless young woman, practically naked. Her hands are tied to a bed rail behind her head.
"Master.I need your whip ... right now," begs another young woman in skimpy black lingerie. She is on her knees with hands on the man's waist.
These X-rated descriptions might seem to belong to porno stories that regu- larly appear in men's magazines or tabloids. But they aren't.
These erotic scenes come from an unprecedented kind of comic magazine for women.
Called rediisu komikku (Ladies' Comics),these specialist magazines reflect women's sexual fantasies.
Finding more and more scenes of rape and sadistic sex in these magazines,Shukan Gendai wonders whether they indicate wom- en's rising interest in violent or perverted sex partners or their growing tenden- cy to indulge in wild sexual fantasies.
At the beginning of the four-page feature, the magazine profiles ladies' comics and their readership.
These monthlies specialize in graphic portrayals of young women's experiences, customarily including sexual ones.
There are a little over 30 such magazines published right now. Shukan Gendai informs that the majority of ladies' comics readers are married women in their late 20s to early 30s who live in the countryside.
Shukan Gendai notes that ladies' comics have been known for their unre- served depictions of sexual fantasies, but their protagonists, always beautiful young women, used to sleep with nicer partners.
Rapists and sadistic men are recent additions. Shukan Gendai reports that rapes and assaults on masochis- tic women are now standard features in these publications.
"Women who want to be raped always attach a condition--that the rapist must be a man they love, but are reluctant to approach," explains Yumi Hayashi,editor-in-chief of Kare-ni Himitsu (He Doesn't Know This). (He Doesn't Know This)の編集長であるユミ ハヤシは説明します。
"When they allow rape,it's always fornication in disguise." 「
A ladies comic fan,21,agrees:"I want to be abused as long as it makes me feel good.I don't mind a little rough play as long as the abuser promises to make me feel good later on. But he must be really good looking." 21歳のレディースコミックファンは賛同します。
Mari Mizuno, the author of a bestselling book,Second Virgin Syndrome, tells Shukan Gendai that sexual liberation of Japanese women is not yet com- plete. More and more Japanese women may be becoming economically inde- pendent, but many of them still find it difficult to approach men they desire.
Unliberated women can only turn to places like ladies' comics when they become stressed or sexually frustrated, analyzes Mizuno.
Shukan Gendai suggests that ladies' comics readers are not eager to experi- ence rape or sadistic assault. Thay are simply using the radical portrayals to release frustration.
They can hardly try the same in real life.
A 22-year-old ladies' comics reader endorses the magazine's view. She con- fesses,"I can't tell my boyfriend to do exactly what I want him to do when we make love. I'm sure he will hate me for saying such a thing. Of course,I don't want him to hate me,so I just keep quiet and pretend."
Japan's girls abuzz with good vibrations
Japan's adult businesses are abuzz with the news that growing numbers of women are buying their own vibrators, according to Weekly Playboy.
An annual survey conducted among women from 41 countries by Durex, the world's largest condom manufacturer, discovered that about 30 percent of all Japanese women own their own vibe, ranking them about 14th overall.
"I thought there was a strangely large number of women who owned vibrators, but there's no doubt the possession rate has skyrocketed these past few years," Mariko Kawana, a former porn starlet and now reporter on the Japanese netherworld, tells Weekly Playboy. "Every month I interview several adult video actresses and they've all got their own. Years ago, you used to have to depend on the director to bring one in to work."
Kawana has few doubts about why so many women have suddenly turned their attention to giving themselves a buzz.
"The biggest reason has got to be because they are so easy to buy these days," Kawana says. "You can get one any time off the Net or at (major discount retail chain) Don Quixote." Indeed, where once taboo and confined to sleazy back street stores, vibrators are now sold openly in even family oriented discount chains like Don Quixote.
"Women are far more open now than they used to be, which has definitely increased the extent of vibrator usage," Yoshimi Tanaka, president of the Adult Convenience Store chain, tells Weekly Playboy. "Take the example of our Akihabara store. About 30 percent of our customers are guys, 40 percent are couples and the remaining 30 percent are women who come in to buy on their own. Women have no problem coming into our stores by themselves."
Incidentally, topping the poll carried out among 350,000 women, was Iceland, where the vibrator possession rate is 52 percent, followed closely behind by Norway at 50 percent.
"We're also doing online and catalog sales of vibrators and the vast majority of our clients live in the colder regions like Hokkaido and Tohoku. I suppose all the snow up there makes it hard to go outside," Tanaka tells Weekly Playboy. "Whatever the reason is, though, vibrators are now easier to buy than ever before, they've got more added features than ever before and I don't think it will be too long in the future when the possession rate among Japanese women also tops the 50 percent mark."

"Yoko" twists her handkerchief and speaks slowly and deliberately when she recalls the two years she spent in Paris.
She worked as an indentured call girl in the City of Lights, where minders kept her under tight control in a Chinatown apartment.
"A lot of the customers were white people," she says. "It was standard to go all the way with them, but for some reason fellatio was popular and if I did it well, the customer would be satisfied with only that."
#2 Yoko's case is not isolated, according to Hanashi no Play. Many Japanese women are forced to work as prostitutes overseas, often in Europe. Almost always, they are working to pay off debts resulting from overspending on credit cards in Japan.
Yoko,26,described as a well-built woman with an intelligent face, first went heavily into debt due to an obsession with expensive brand- name fashion accessories. Then a spell in an overseas hospital to treat dysentery left her utterly helpless, financially speaking.
Her credit card debt was handed over to an unscrupulous collection agency that tried its hardest to make her life miserable. And her friends and work colleagues began to spread nasty rumors about her.In the end, she couldn't take it any longer.
#3 So when a "broker" offered her the chance to work off her debt in Paris - where no one knew her, it seemed like a good idea.
After arriving in Paris, the Japanese broker immediately handed her over to his local counterpart. She was put in an apartment with three other prostitutes, all Japanese in their 20s.
It was not a happy existence. Yoko remembers the time one of the roommates returned to the apartment early one morning smelling of urine and with wounds all over her body.It turned out she had been forced to succumb to the sadomasochistic desires of a "perverted German."
#4 The woman became totally withdrawn, not speaking to anyone. A week later she killed herself.
"Hitomi" recalls similar experiences in London. Starting in the sum- mer of 1996, she was based in the city's Soho district where she earned about 100 pounds per customer, servicing two to four of them a day.
Her three roommates were all Asian. She remembers the time one, a Filipino, was strangled by a john.It turned out that Hitomi was original- ly supposed to service that customer that day but the Filipina was sent in her place because Hitomi had been bedridden by a fever.
A Japanese "broker" who arranges for the woman to be sent overseas tells the magazine that he is normally paid around 1 million yen per introduction."Since I started doing this job about 10 years ago, I've han- dled about 50 people," says the man, a former car dealer from Tokyo.
#5 Still, the sympathetic coverage of the woman's plight seems an incon- gruous moral stance for Hanashi no Play. The other pages of this pulpy mens's magazine are otherwise filled with reports extolling the delights of "soaplands" and other red-light establishments in Japan.
Maybe its writers and editors believe prostitution is only "shocking" and "unfortunate" when it involves women selling themselves to men who are no Japanese.

The magazine says it costs 30,000 yen a month to have a personal ad or a videotaped work of art screened every day at the theater.
An even more spectacular display is available for desperate self-promoters with money to burn.
Denim tells its readers that a professional fireworks agency can set large block letters on fire with a big bang for about 300,000 yen.
But the service is only available on two conditions--the client must secure enough open space for a fireworks display and make the reservation more than 1 1/2 (←1と2分の1、の帯分数です)months before the scheduled date of the display.
Other methods Denim recommends are less bold.
They involve printing of personal names, faces and messages on a variety of items from manju (a bun with a beam paste) to wine bottles. For example, making a set of 20 manju bearing a name as giveaways costs 7,500 yen, according to the magazine.
If printing names and faces on things like mugs and business cards and handing them out seems tame, one can ask a company called Another One to manufacture a three-dimensional likeness--a stuffed doll that looks like oneself.
According to Denim, the company asks 20,000 yen for making a "comical" doll on the basis of a single portrait photo and 38,000 yen for manufacturing a "real" doll on the basis of three or more frontal pictures. These dolls are meant to serve as an impressive present, reminds the maga- zine.
Will shy Japanese go this far?Denim definitely thinks so.
The magazine directs the reader who is not too impressed with the idea of a likeness doll to a made-to-order bust.
"It will be good to make your own bust and give it to your girlfriend as a present," argues the magazine, adding,"Making your girlfriend's father's bust will also help you win his approval."
According to the magazine,a Tokyo company called Kinyosha uses computer analysis and manufactures a bust to order in two weeks for 170,000 yen.
While Japan's print media is not known for personal ads, there are a few magazines that avail pages to individual advertisers.
Denim says that a bimonthly covering performing and graphic arts called DICE is offering a tiny publicity space measuring 1/24th of an A-4 size page for 5,000 yen.
Some readers are using this space to look for employment while others are making use of the arrangement to put out their creative work, notes Denim.(TI)

2000,09,17 Accused faces lashing in Malaysia rape case Shukan shincho 9/14 By Mark Schreiber
“I was set up. That night I was dead drunk and fell asleep on the floor,” Hiroshi Iwabuchi told his father, who traveled to Malaysia to visit his son in prison. “I have memory of what occurred. But I never laid a hand on that woman.”
A court in Kuala Lumpur decided otherwise. Finding him guilty on charges of rape and sodomy, it sentenced Iwabuchi, 43, to receive 10 lashes with a rat- tan cane,to be followed by eight years in the penitentiary.
The local Japanese community has been shocked by the harsh verdict, hand- ed down nine months after the trial.
#2 Such corporal punishment is banned under Japan's constitution. Shukan shincho describes caning as a fearsome penalty, leaving a recipient with flayed skin and even broken bones. Although a physician is always present, his main function is to determine whether or not the victim can tolerate additional strokes. Death from shock is rare, but not unknown.
Iwabuchi, an engineer employed by a subsidiary of Tokyo Electric Power Co., went to Malaysia last year to oversee an urban planning study. On Nov. 18, he joined a dozen Japanese and local staff for a hotel dinner party. Afterwards, Iwabuchi, a Chinese female employee and several others moved to the hotel bar for a nightcap. The party broke up around midnight.
Four days later, Iwabuchi found himself under arrest. The case made front- page news in local English and Chinese newspapers. 4
#3 According to the victim's own account, “That evening, he [Iwabuchi] came on to me, offering money to become his mistress. I told him I was married and he dropped the subject. I came back from the ladies' room, sipped my drink and passed out maybe a minute later. The next thing I remember was waking up in bed in Iwabuchi's hotel room. The sheets were covered with blood. He says I went to his room of my own volition, but that's unthinkable.
“From the doctor's report, you can see that there's no way I could have taken that kind of abuse if I'd been conscious.” 「
#4 Shukan Shincho quotes the physician's affidavit as noting the abrasions to her sexual organs were “far in excess of that incurred during childbirth”and “strongly suggestive of penetration by a blunt object, wielded in a brutal man- ner. The position of the tears would indicate the likelihood that entry took place from the anus. It was the victim's husband who notified the police.”
“This incident has really got us on edge,” says one of Iwabuchi's co-workers in Malaysia. “We're not sure, in judicial terms, precisely what he's been found guilty of. It appears the medical report was not presented as evidence in the trial. Doctors in Malaysia are licensed differently based on whether they gradu- ated from national or private medical schools. Reports by doctors from the pri- vate institutions aren't admissible as court evidence. Things kept popping up one after the next; we really don't know what to believe.”
#5 Iwabuchi is on leave from his company while his sentence is under appeal. Except for Shukan Shincho, Japan's vernacular media has been unusually quiet on the incident.
Noting the nine-month span between arrest and verdict, a Japanese writer posted in Malaysia also senses something amiss.
“Things seemed odd right from the start,” he says. “The victim says she has no memory of the incident; the suspect denies it completely; there were no wit- nesses. Even though it was sensationalized in the local press, it wasn't reported in Japan. That's because the truth still hasn't been fully established.”
[C] a person from China, or whose family was originally from China

Truckers deliver the goods to seductive ladies of the house 「宅配業者を困らせる人妻」 Sunday March 11, 2001
#1 From June through October last year, Wada-san, 24, worked part time driving a parcel delivery van to save enough funds to let him perform with a theater troupe. During his five-month stint behind the wheel, the lanky and handsome youth was twice targeted for seduction by lusty female customers.
#2 "The first time was about two months after I started," he relates to Shukan Taishu (3/26). "I had to drop something off at a condo, but nobody was home. I was writing a nondelivery notice to drop in the mailbox downstairs when the lady of the house, who was around 30 and quite a looker, pulled up on her bicycle with a basket full of groceries."
#3 "When I asked her to sign the receipt voucher, I made the mistake of remarking that the apples she was carrying looked tasty, and she urged me to go upstairs to try one."
#4 Other customers had presented him with cans of juice before, but never invited him to sit at their kitchen table while they peeled and sliced fresh fruit.
#6 He was right. Remarking how hot the day was, the customer stood up, pulled off her top garment and went to lock the front door from the inside. "Fortunately or unfortunately, I'd locked the van and taken the keys with me," Wada says. "So I wound up reciprocating her gift of an apple with my 'banana.' "
#7 Their friendship was consummated with him seated at the kitchen table and her on his lap, her back turned toward him.
#8 "Let's keep it our little secret," she winked to him in parting.
#9 "Wives these days are something else," a 42-year-old veteran driver relates with a chuckle. "I bet they come on to the younger guys all the time. But of course they don't pay any attention to middle-aged men like me."
#10 Such juicy tales apparently abound. Another driver named Kato, 28, was making a delivery to a residential area of Kawasaki when he inadvertently interrupted what was apparently a noontime tryst between a housewife and her paramour. When he returned for another delivery two weeks later, the wife recognized him.
#12 "It was a two-piece negligee she'd ordered through the mail," Kato recalls. "She murmured, as if thinking out loud, 'Such a delicate item, yet so expensive.' "
#14 "The whole thing was straight out of a B-grade porno film," Kato grins.
#15 Those entrusted with picking up shipments are also targeted by these female predators. One driver, who regularly loaded shipments from a small native handicrafts workshop, found himself alone with the patron's wife when he suddenly felt her arms wrapped around his torso.
#16 "Then I heard this hoarse whisper, 'I really like you,' beside my ear," he says incredulously. "And her husband was there working in the shop out front; how brazen can you get?"
#17 Parcel delivery services have become increasingly user friendly and convenient. But in the present dog-eat-dog business climate, Shukan Taishu concludes, it would seem some drivers can be really hard-pressed to provide that "extra something" to keep their customers satisfied.
>>494 behind the wheel = at the wheel = ハンドルを握って, 運転して だと思います。
> 499 > Those entrusted with picking up shipments are also targeted〜 > それらの集荷を任された者たちは、これらの女(雌)プレデターの標的にもされる。
There are many magazines in Japan whose odd names puzzle not only for- eign but also Japanese readers.
Da Vinch,a monthly magazine providing infor- mation on new books, describes where the peculiar names originate from.
The magazine covers 40 magazine names in a seven-page article. They include two that often appear on this page--Spa! and Aera.
According to Da Vinch,Spa! was so named by a former editor who wanted to cut social phe- nomena into understandable pieces.
The name Spa! represents a sound which results when something is cut with force in a resolute manner. Spa!
Meanwhile, the name Aera was selected from about 100 candidates because of its strong visual impact.
Since its publication,Aera has been trying to popu- larize the view that the set of four alphabetical letters stand for"Asahi Shinbun Extra Report and Analysis," but Da Vinch reveals that the name orig- inally came from a Latin word meaning "era."
Other magazines have even more unlikely origins. An.an a popular wom- en's magazine, was named after a panda at London Zoo.
The magazine used to carry a small illustration of a panda near the logo on its cover.
JJ is another women's magazine with a mystifying name. It was so named after designers complained that its unhip original title was too long for a logo.In early edi- tions,JJ carried near the logo its lengthy original name,"Bessatsu(Supplement Issue of) Josei Jishin," informs Da Vinch.
There are also titles born out of brainstorming. The weekly entertainment schedule magazine Pia's name is not related to any existing word or phrase.
According to Da Vinch, inaugural editors of Pia raked their brains to come up with an-easy-to-remember title which does not limit the contents in any way.
The editors first picked the sound "pi" after finding that names of many popu- lar magazines started with this sound. Then thay paired "pi" with "a," the first vowel in the Japanese syllabary.
Da Vinch informs its readers that a popular method among Japanese editors is to turn to another language for a fresh word with impact.
Such odd names as Frau(German word meaning "female"),Jaran(Indonesian word for"going out")and non.no(Ainu word for "flowers")fall under this category. Frau(ドイツ語で「女性」という意味です)、じゃらん(インドネシアの言葉で「外出」を表します) 、non-no(アイヌの言葉で「花」を表します)のような奇妙な名前は、このカテゴリに分類されます。
But some of the most successful titles are Japanese.A god example is Barazoku.
Literally meaning the "rose tribe," the name the editor of the gay magazine coined to identify its readership more than 20 years ago had such an impact that it has become a standard expression.
Today dictionaries list this word as a synonym for homosexual men, reminds Da Vinch.(TI)
>In early editions,JJ carried near the logo its lengthy original name, >"Bessatsu(Supplement Issue of) Josei Jishin," informs Da Vinch.

#2 What goes on behind their closed doors is nothing short of appalling. And if you're one of the hundreds of people who've slaked their thirsts with shakes or juices, you'll gag at what Josei Seven has turned up. Like pulverized cock- roaches. (And you thought that was a chocolate shake.) One clerk at a donut store blew the lid on the store's questionable practices by fessing up that their shake is spiked by cockroaches that drop in when they forget to put the lid on the tank containing the shake - which, by the way, they just continue to replen- ish instead of cleaning up.
Similarly, a clerk at a hamburger shop claims that droves of insects, attracted by the sweet taste of the orange juice in the blender, land in the liquid and - well, you know the rest. So do the staff make any attempt to clean it up or pre- vent these buggers from creeping in?
#3 Clearly, it's up to the consumers to keep their eyes peeled open. For instance, at ramen noodle shops where a wayward bandage can be all too easily mistaken for a slippery edible. As one cook confessed, a stinky bandage he'd had wrapped around his hand for four days inadvertently deposited itself into a bowl of noodles he was about to serve. He hesitated, but his supervisor remarked, “Hey, what customers don't know won't hurt them.” So the soup was duly served. And it must've been yummy, because the customer didn't leave behind a single drop.
Still, even if you're not the squeamish type, there's bound to be some things you just can't help noticing. Like one 34-year-old customer at a Chinese restau- rant, who ordered a dish of assorted stir-fried vegetables - and got mixed dish all right: one containing a metal scrubbing brush. When he inadvertently bit into it, he complains, he felt stabs of pain in his gums, and his mouth tumed all bloody.
#4 But let's not jump to conclusions and single out Chinese restaurants for hygienic impropriety. Judging from the Josei Seven report, Japanese eateries fare no better. One 19-year-old student was served something that wasn't what you'd call hopping good: playing peek-a-boo in her bowl of cooked cabbage, meat and rice, was a frog. A green frog boiled an unappetizing shade of gray. Not exactly French cuisine.
Conditions may be no better at elegant eating establishments, as a 33-year- old clerk attests. At a swank Japanese restaurant charging 20,000 yen or more per head that he works for, the kitchen is a ghoulish nightmare only slightly cleaner than a sewer. A breeding ground for cockroaches, the staff regularly flick off dead roaches that have plopped in the serving bowls.

1995,10,08 Violence among Shinjuku's gay prostitutes on the rise
Shukan Bunshun 10/5
With 400 to 500 gay bars,Tokyo's Shinjuku 2-chome area had long been a haven for Japan's homosexuals.
But the feeling of safety and comfort the neighborhood guaranteed to secretive gay men may be a thing of the past.
Shukan Bunshun reports on growing cases of violence among gay prosti- tutes in the area.
Before describing what is happening, the magazine gives the novice reader a concise explanation of the prostitution system peculiar to this neighbor- hood.
Called urisen, the system consists of pickup bars, young male prosti- tutes hired by these bars and their homosexual customers.
Urisen bars charge each customer 5,000 yen to 10,000 yen for taking a young guy out. The pros- titute usually makes 10,000 yen in exchange for two hours of play.
Urisen prostitutes are employees of these bars. On the other hand, there are freelancers who approach prospects on streetcorners.
Called yamisen, many of the street boys are former urisen employees who were forced to leave bars after growing too old.
Most house prostitutes in the neighborhood are in their late teens to early 20s,informs Shukan Bunshun.
According to the magazine, popular freelancers are attacked by agents hired by jealous house whores while they are alone.
"In most cases I know, two or three men attack a hooker. They try to damage the victim's face in a distinct manner. They don't try to seriously hurt him," explains Hiroki,a 19- year-old yamisen.
Masaaki, another street boy, elaborates:"It's all jealousy. We homosexuals cannot accept someone who is more beautiful, more popu- lar than ourselves." Masaaki informs Shukan Bunshun that urisen prosti- tutes don't perform the assault themselves and pay hot rodders or gangsters for the dirty job.
He adds that cash-hungry hot rodders have begun to roam the area looking for a wealthy male hooker,an easy extortion target.
Shukan Bunshun informs its readers that victims are not only knifed but also robbed.
There is a prolonged business slump behind rising cases of vio- lence.
The magazine quotes an insider and notes that the number of urisen customers has dropped to one-fifth of the pre-recession level.
In spite of that, more and more homosexual youngsters, informed by an increasingly gay- friendly media, are arriving from the countryside to find work at urisen bars.
There are even homosexual junior and senior high-school students who come to the Shinjuku 2-chome area to make quick money during their sum- mer vacation.
"There used to be a certain atmosphere here which prevented normal folks from walking in," laments a senior gay bar operator. 「
"In the old days, being a gay was an absolute secret you didn't want anyone to know and homosexu- als observed unwritten codes for protecting their kind. Now everyone visits the area to have a good time. The codes are not with us any more."(TI) 「昔は、同性愛者であるということは誰にも知られたくない絶対的な秘密であり、 同性愛者は自分達の種を護るために不文律を遵守していました。
#0 Schoolgirls playing filthy game of orgy roulette ひわいな乱交ルーレットに興じる女子生徒たち #1 Russian Roulette is filled with inherent dangers, but Japanese schoolgirls have apparently devised a version where there're plenty of shots fired, but none of them are bullets, according to Hanashi no Channel (2/20). #2 Instead of a single bullet being loaded into a revolver chamber and the trigger pulled until it lets off with a blast, Russian Sex Roulette, the schoolgirls' derivative game, sees the girls allow any number of men to unleash their weapons in her chamber.
#3 An added thrill comes from whether the girl picks up a long-term reminder of her role in the game, and though some can take out insurance to play, it seems the participants are sadly unaware of just how dangerous an undertaking they have made.
#4 "I've heard it's just amazing. Now high schoolkids everywhere are into it (Russian Sex Roulette). It's basically just an orgy with the same number of girls and guys, but the object is for the girl to have unprotected sex with every guy there to see if she gets pregnant or not," a Tokyo schoolgirl tells Hanashi no Channel. "I'd like to have a go, but I'm a bit scared."
#5 The schoolgirl continues, saying the games are usually held at the home of somebody whose parents are absent. Couples pair off, then proceed to various parts of the home. #6 "Positioning is all important," the schoolgirl tells Hanashi no Channel. "The rules stipulate that the guy can't withdraw when he ejaculates and you can't have more than one couple in the same position, so if you've got a pair with rear entry in the kitchen, you'll have another couple facing each other on the sofa and yet another guy and girl on the bed in the missionary position. Everybody gets a turn at deciding couples until everyone has been with everybody else."
#7 Amazingly, despite taking the name of their game from a potentially lethal pursuit, kids taking part in Russian Sex Roulette seem to have little idea that they could be doing something deadly. Awareness of contraception is limited. #8 "I'm scared of getting pregnant, but as long as you get it out of you, it's all right. I've heard you'll be safe if you scrape out (semen) with a plastic coffee spoon, so I always carry one around with me, just in case," a girl of 16, the age some Russian Sex Roulette participants are rumored to be, tells Hanashi no Channel.
#9 Even if participants do fall pregnant, they don't seem to see it as a worry. Partygoers have to pay "Ejaculation Insurance" of about 5,000 yen before they're allowed to take part. This money is all pooled and used to pay for abortions should any girl be saddled with an unwanted pregnancy. #10 Astonishingly, neither the magazine nor any of the participants it interviews mentions anything about a fear of AIDS or other sexually transmitted diseases, though venereal disease is at record high levels among Japanese schoolgirls at the moment. Instead, the girls who have played Russian Sex Roulette gush about the experience. "For a girl or a guy, once you've had a taste of the game you'll want to go back for more," an "experienced" schoolgirl tells Hanashi no Channel. "I can't get by with normal sex anymore. Watch Russian Sex Roulette get its big break this year."
パクリは正しい!? 1995,10,29 The ethics of 'borrowing' in the Japanese pop industry 日本のポップミュージック産業での「借用」の倫理観
Bart 26/10
Is stealing acceptable? The answer seems definitely no in all places except the world of Japanese pop, where stolen ideas have produced little controver- sy.
Bart tries to understand why Japan's pop composers show no qualms about copying or borrowing from their resourceful Western counterparts.
At the beginning of the article, the magazine reminds the naive reader that recent hits by Mr.Children and Kenji Ozawa sound suspiciously similar to compositions by Elvis Costello and Eric Claption, respectively.
According to Bart, there are some shameless Japanese rock artists who copy a whole tune, make small changes and call the result their originals. But others are less conscious.
They end up sounding like The Kinks or Paul McCartney because they love and listen to these idols again and again.
Hip hop artists are more open about their sampling habit. In fact, they "quote" rather than steal.
"Hip hop is a kind of music which is equipped with a system for showing respect for sampling sources," explains Seiko Ito,one of Japan's oldest rappers.
"Some(Japanese) rock musicians,on the other hand, steal the essence and atmosphere of songs they like to duplicate. I don't think they are creative." Ito tells Bart that hip hop artists steal ideas they like and say so,instead of hiding the fact.
Ito suggests that sampling is so easy that musicians are beginning to feel it is useless to work hard to compose new melodies that often do not compare with existing masterpieces.
"There is no musical genius in our age," Ito points out. "So,it's best for us to enjoy the work of ace stealers." Bart agrees with Ito.
The magazine goes on to suggest that decoding of sampled phrases and rhythm patterns gives listeners the fundamental human pleasure of call- ing something back from the remotest corners of memory.
But most Westerners are not as forgiving as Bart or Ito. To illustrate this, the magazine listens to the opinion of Peter Barakan,a broadcaster-music journalist living in Tokyo.
He feels that stealing constitutes a crime. He also observes that Japanese musicians seem to feel it is OK for them to steal ideas because "everyone is doing it" and "most listeners will never find it out."
Barakan says that he has always been aware of those Japanese songs that sound dubiously familiar to his English ears since he arrived here 20 years ago.
The Briton, who is no more taken by surprise by such songs, feels that the growing practice of sampling is a contributing factor, but more signifi- cantly stealing continues unabated because both creators and listeners con- sider stealing normal and don't attach high value to originality.(TI)
そもそも > Watch Russian Sex Roulette get its big break this year."

By now, readers of this page must have added the word, joshikosei(female senior high-school students),to their vocabulary.
In the last two years, Japanese magazines carried as many as 200 articles on joshikosei and the teen- age girl's popularity with magazine editors shows no signs of decline.
In the eye of critical observers, things are getting worse. They say radical stories with headlines like "enjo kosai(having a sugar daddy) is like living in a par- adise" and "joshikosei are casually taking amphetamines to increase sexual pleasure and lose weight" have increased in number.
Brown-haired teen-age girls wearing school uniforms and loose socks have become a common sight on TV as well. We find them not only in documentary and news programs but also in such game shows as "Maketara Akan!" (Don't Allow Yourself To Lose!),where girls compete by trying to shed uniforms and put on street clothes quickly without exposing themselves too much.
The incredibly large number of joshikosei making media appearances makes Shukan Asahi wonder where they all come from. The magazine's staff writer,Keiko Hamada, meets Takako-chan,a "joshikosei promoter" who is behind many of the articles and TV shows.
According to Shukan Asahi,Takako-chan is a senior at a prestigious pri- vate senior high school in Tokyo. Her short skirt,died-brown hair and loose socks make her a perfect target for shady joshikosei scouts who ply Shibuya's Sentaagai Mall, but Takako-chan is their formidable competitor in disguise. She makes more than 100,000yen a month by calling her friends and introduc- ing them to editors and producers.
Takako-chan began to work as a joshikosei promoter about a year ago when an editor first asked her to appear in a magazine and then to introduce her friends. Making use of her thick telephone book,Takako-chan has since taken care of all kinds of introduction requests. She tells the reporter that work used to be easy, but nowadays editors and producers are asking difficult--- if not impossible--tasks,like finding a joshikosei who can eat 100 bagfuls of potato chips or introduce a girl who doesn't mind skatebording in a bikini.
According to Shukan Asahi,Takako-chan did not build up her extensive network of friends and acquaintances with the introduction business in mind. She used to be an avid fan of a rock band called "Kinniku Shojotai" and her networking started when she handed out her name cards to like-minded girls at the band's concerts in a bid to exchange gossip and information. These days, Takako-chan is fully aware of the commercial value of her friends and she con- tinues to increase contacts by going to places where joshikosei hang out. Takako-chan tells Shukan Asahi that she has an advantage over others trying to scout joshikosei because she is a high-school student herself.
Takako-chan is a true professional who takes pride in her ability to intro- duce all types of joshikosei. Her minimal fee for an introduction is 8,000 yen. She takes 3,000 yen,in the name of a "coordination fee," and hands 5,000 yen to the girl. When a client wants a joshikosei who is willing to recount her pros- titution experience,Takako-chan usually asks for at least 10,000 yen in pay- ment for the girl and 3,000 to 5,000 yen for herself.
The agent informs Shukan Asahi that girls consider television and maga- zine appearances a good-paying variety of part-time work. Knowing this, Takako-chan is extra careful not to undersell, but sneaky old men spoil her effort from time to time. Blasts Takako-chan:"There are people who refuse to pay me the amount they agreed on or others who pocket a portion of payment behind my back. Those people really make me angry. They think I'm an igno- rant joshikosei they can take advantage of."(TI) この仲介者は週刊朝日に、少女たちはテレビ出演や雑誌出演を、 割のいい類のアルバイトだと考えているのだと告げます。

1999,01,31 Some gals can't get enough of Viagra-addicted supermen Shukan Gendai2/6 By Ryann Connell バイアグラ中毒超絶男が物足りないギャルがいる 週刊現代 2月6日号 By ライアン・コネル
Viagra, the anti-impotency “wonder drug” that has rejuvenated the lives of millions of men since coming on to the market in the United States in March last year, is starting to affect the mental state of many Japanese. Indeed, Shukan Gendai say, although Viagra can't legally be sold yet in Japan, the black market for the drug is thriving, boosted by the increasing number of men and women who find they need the diamond-shaped blue pill so much it's become an addiction for them.
“My life was starting to crumble around my ears. I'd been working late every night and after a few years of marriage, the sex life that had once been my only source of stress relief had become almost nonexistent. My troubles were compounded when I realized my erections were only coming in half-measures,” says Akihiko Tanaka, a 34-year-old manufacturing company employee.
“Then, I discovered Viagra. It was like someone had inserted an iron rod inside me. I started getting home early and my wife and I were in bed at eight every night, but not sleeping until three or so in the morning. It was wonderful. But then,I thought I'd better try and see if I could still do the same things without taking Viagra. But when it came to the crunch,I couldn't do it because I thought I wouldn't be able to make my wife happy. Now, I'm too scared to stop taking it. Viagra is making me a nervous wreck.”
Shukan Gendai says it's not just men who have fallen under Viagra's spell.
“I talked my boyfriend into trying Viagra as a joke last summer. I don't think I've been able to wipe the smile off my face since,” says Yuri Hanaoka,a 29-year-old construction company employee. “My boyfriend wants to give up using Viagra, but every time he tries to make love to me without the pill it's about as exciting as watching grass grow. If he stops taking it, I'm going to start looking around for someone else who will use the pill and who'll make sure I get the satisfaction that I need.”
And, Shukan Gendai says,it's not just for sexual gratification that people are developing a Viagra addiction. Take the case of 22-year-old Rumiko. “I have a little arrangement with my boss at work, who's in his fifties. I let him take me to a hotel and in return he gives me a bit of pocket money,” Rumiko says. “Before Viagra, he'd only meet up with me once every couple of weeks. I was hardly making any money. But now he's got the pill, he wants to meet me nearly every night. I'm pretty tired by the end of it, but the thought of all the shopping I'll be able to do keeps my going. Without Viagra,I'd face a pretty big drop in my standard of living.”
Hiroshi Katsumata, a doctor who has prescribed the anti-impotency drug to over 2,000 men, says Viagra has the potential to ruin many lives.
“Impotency in men under 50 is often the result of excessive stress,” he says, “Viagra may offer short-term relief, but dependency on the drug is only likely to heighten these men's troubles in the long run.”(RC) 「50歳以下の男性のインポテンツは多くの場合過度のストレスの結果です。」
Are young women really abandoning their panties?
Weekly Playboy 8/13
About this time last year, all the magazines covered the sudden rise in the number of exhibitionist teen-age girls who showed off their bellies.
This summer, most magazines are observing that young women are not so bold, but the observant Weekly Playboy suspects something less conspic- uous but even wilder is going on.
According to the magazine's observations, panty lines that used to show under thin summer skirts and pants have disappeared.
Weekly Playboy launches a full investigation in the hope of proving the wild as- sumption that women are abandoning their underpants!
Starting the four-page article with a survey,Weekly Playboy stops 30 young women on a Tokyo street after confirming that their buttocks show no trace of underwear.
"When I wear thin pants like this," says 19-year- old Nami,"I always put on underpants with laced elastic sections." 「
"Are you crazy?Nobody walks around without their panties on," offers Mika,a high-school atudent in black shorts. "We all wear G-strings!"
Contrary to its expectations,Weekly Playboy finds no girls practicing the no-underpants policy.
But a comment by one of the survey re- spondents,a co-ed named Motoko, encourages the magazine to continue probing. "I think many girls don't wear panties at home. I don't. In sum- mer it's too hot to sleep with panties on. Without them, you can feel more relaxed."
Weekly Playboy interviews more women and finally meets Miki Kawamoto. The 23-year-old,who works for a video company, reveals to the magazine that she doesn't wear panties. Instead, she put on a new, combination type pantihose which functions as both panties and panti- hose.
"They show no line at all," points out Kawamoto. "When I put them on under flare pants or a flare mini skirt,I'm sure people who look at my bottom from behind suspect I'm not wearing anything at all underneath."
The magazine obtains further proof at Pearl Pink,a lingerie store in Shinjuku.
The proprietor informs Weekly Playboy that she recommends such products as brown panties and those made in certain designs to cus- tomers who visit her store in search of a way to conceal signs of undergar- ments.
The magazine concludes that those suggestive young women are in fact fully covering their bottoms.
This early conclusion forces the maga- znie to fill the rest of the space with a questionable proposal. It recom- mends a stimulating date with a woman with no panties on.(TI)
