Takarajima 1/19 BY RYANN CONNELL "My Pocket Monster would get a real workout if I had a Woody." Although most parents in the English-speaking world would be horrified to hear their children say something like above, Japanese parents would likely realize that their kids were talking about playing an enormously popular Nindendo video game on a Panasonic-produced Woody computer. While most japanese know that the astoundingly popular Pocket Monstaers capturing the hearts of children across the globe garnered their name because the video game in which they originally appeared requires players to capture an opponent's monstar, then place it in a capsule stored in a pocket. Takarajima says English speakers would quite likely view a pocket monster is slightly different light. "Ask Americans what they think a Pocket Monster is and eight out of 10 will say it's a penis." says female interpreter. Fortunately for those making a buck out of Pikachu and other fabulous collection of Pocket Monsters, they were aware of the connotations the name carried and outside of Japan refer to the characters collectively as Pokemon. Otherwise, "Pokemon -- The First Movie" may not have had the phenomenal success the saw it became the first Japanese flick to top the U.S. box office in November last year.
68 :ポケモンの意味は勃起した男性器だった(中盤):2008/08/14(木) 08:29:21.95 ID:Dp3q+l4B0 "We knew that Pocket Monster could be used as a slang term for a penis. That's why we decided to keep the Pokemon term that Japanese kids had been using when we came up with the title of the film." says a spokesman for Nintendo, the company that developed Pocket Monsters. Shogakukan Production License, which produces the Pokemon trading cards some American kids are coming to blows over because of their scarcity, adopts a similar line. "Talk of the slang meaning of [Pocket Monsters] was a topic of discussion even before the movie opened in the united States. For the same reasons as Nintendo, we decided on [using the pokemon term] to avoid any further damage to the image of what is children's character." a company spokesman says. Perhaps it was just as well that Nintendo and Shogakukan decided on such a course of action. "If the American rekease of the movie had been titled 'Pocket Monster." the whole of United States would be in fits of laughter." a woman who grew up outside of Japan says.
75 :ポケモンの意味は勃起した男性器だった(後半):2008/08/14(木) 08:50:17.94 ID:Dp3q+l4B0 Takarajima, however, notes that despite the attempts at shielding foreigners form learning that japanese refer to the cartoon characters as Pocket Monsters, the Pokemon approach hasn't been entirely successful. "Even before the movie came out. Americans in Japan were getting a laugh out of Pocket Monsters. They'd go around thrusting out their groins and saying: 'Hey, have a look at my Pocket Monster.'" celebrity Dave Spector says. "American comedians are referring to Pocket Monsters in their jokes, too." Takarajima notes that a popular U.S. cartoon "South park." took the Japansese connection to Pocket Monsters a step further when it did a show about the way that Pokemon have swept the United States by storm. It seems the stars of "South park." which has made a name for itself by featuring precocious child cartoon characters for whom no topic is sacred, referring to Pokemon as Chinpokomon. The name Chinpokomon, Takarajima says, derivers from chinpoko, a Japanese slan word for penis.

"I'd cook anytime, but whenever I go in the kitchen you come up behind me and start feeling me up,you dirty bastard,"she snapped back. Trivial though the quarrel seemed,Shukan Taishu notes,it was the final straw for Misawa. She promptly divorced her"dirty old man." Misawa got a 1 million yen settlement and 40,000yen a month to pay for her 2-year-old son.She got a part-time job and, with welfare pay- ments, was managing to get by--at first. While married,Misawa and her son had been covered by her hus- band's health insurance. That was gone, the boy got sick and money started to disappear. Her ex-husband's familyrefused to help her finan- cially and her former hubby refused to even acknowledge her existence. People would learn she was divorced and isolate her.The bills mount- ed up,the kid kept screaming. She waited till her son had gone to sleep, then had a sip of brandy. Within week's the nightly sip had become a bot- tile.
Out on the town one night,Misawa met a young man she liked and took him home for a little fun.A couple of weeks later, she started an affair with a married man from work. "It doesn't really matter who it is I sleep with.Anyone'll do.I just need someone to rely on,"She says, her loneliness evident. Divorce counselor and writer Hiromi Ikeuchi says that women like Misawa are not alone. "Some women think being divorced is kind od cool.It isn't always that romantic."she says. Divorce lawyer Yuko Taniguchi agrees. "It seems most divorced women are having a tough time.To combat frustration, some turn to alchol, others beat their kids.Just because the women get divorced dosen't necessarily mean they're going to be happy."she says.Shukan Taishu gives some examples to support what Taniguchi says. Yoko Takagi,35,divorced her husband and took her two children to live with her mother.Burdened by the expanses of caring for the kids, Takagi says she had no choice but to sell her body in a seikan health,a kind of massage parlor,to pay her bills. "On a good day,I can make as much as 50,000 yen,I only work from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. so I can go and pick up my kids from the day-care cen- ter,"she says. Shukan Taishu notes, not without a hint of irony, that many divorced women now yearn from the men who once shared their lives.(RC)
Truckers deliver the goods to seductive ladies of the house
Shukan Taishu 3/26
BY MARK SCHREIBER
From June through October last year,Wada-san,24,worked part time dri- ving a parcel delivery van to save enough funds to let him perform with a theater troupe.During his five-month stint behind the wheel, the lanky and handsome youth was twice targeted for seducation by lusty female customers. "The first time was about two months after I started,"he relates to Shukan Taishu."I had to drop something off at a condo, but nobody was home.I was writing a nondelivery notice to drop in the mailbox downstairs when the lady of the house.who was around 30 and quite a looker, pulled up on her bicycle with a basket full of groceries," "When I asked her to sign the receit voucher,I made the mistake of remarking that the apples she was carring looked tasty.and she urged me to go upstairs to try one." Other customers had presented him with cans of juice before, but never invited him to sit at their kitchen table while they people and sliced fresh fruit.
"She slid up right beside me in another chair and while talking, put her hand on my thigh,"Wada recalls."I knew right then what was coming next." He was right.Remarking how hot the day was ,the customer stood up, pulled off her top garment and went to lock the front door from the inside. "Fortunately or unfortunately,I'd locked the van and taken the keys with me,"Wada says."So I wound up reciprocating her gift of an apple with my 'banana.'" Their friendship was consummated with him sented at the kitchen table and her on his lap,her back turned toward him. "Let's keep it our little secret,"she winked to him in parting. "Wives these days are something else,"a 42-year-old veteran driver relates with a chuckle."I bet they come on to middle-aged men like me." Such juicy tales apparently abound.Another driver named Kato,28,was making a delivery to a residential area of Kawasaki when he inadvertently interrupted what was apparently a noontime tryst between a housewife and her paramour. When he returned for another delivery two weeks later, the wife recognized him. "Wait a minit willya."she said."I wanna make sure that they got the order right."And she popped open the mailing envelope. "It was a two-piece negligee she'd ordered through the mail,"Kato recalls. "She murmured,as if thinking out loud.'Such a delicate item, yet so ex- pensive.'"
The next thing he knew,Kato was sipping tea at the table.Soon thereafter she had literally bowled him over into a horizontal position. "The whole thing was straight out of a B-grade porno film,"Kato grins. Those entrusted with picking up shipments are also targeted by these female predators. One driver, who regularly loaded shipments from a small native handicrafts workshop, found himself alone with the patron's wife when he suddenly felt her arms wrapped around his torso. "Then I heard this hoarse whisper,'I really like you,'beside my ear,"he says incredulously."And her husband was there working in the shop out front;how brazen can you get?" Parcel dlivery services have become increasingly user friendly, and con- venient. But in the present god-eat-dog business climate,Shukan Taishu concludes,it would seem some drivers can be really hard-pressed to provide that"extra something"to keep their customers satisfied.
In a tiny shop corner crowded with apollo caps,por- traits of Bob Marley, accessories and narrow jagged leaves stands a middle-aged man with arms folded across his chest and a pipe sticking out of his mouth. He is Ko'ichi Maeda,44,the owner of a new boutique in Osaka's tren- dy America-mura district.Merchandise pictured at this shop might appear ordinary at a glance, but its not.Its rare, verging on illegal, reminds Friday. According to the magazine, the newly establishment "Taima-do"hemp shop sells imported clothing and ac- cessoriese made from the grass popularly dried an used as a recreational drug.Friday says Media imports almost all his textile products from the United States as mariju- ana is not available here under a law that strictly pro- hibits its use for any purpose.
Owner Maeda is a die-hard marijuana advocate who has authored a book on his beloved plant."I bought a wallet made of marijuana when I traveled to the United States a year and a half ago,"recounts Maeda."The idea for this shop came from that purchase. In Japan, marijuana is automatically associated with illegal drug usage. But that's not correct. In the U.S. is plenty of mer- chandise on sale made from marijuana." Friday listens on. "Thomas Jefferson was growing marijuana at his farm and had a plant which he used to make paper,He wrote a draft for the Declaration of Independence on paper made 100 percent from marijuana."The authority adds that marijuana can also be used to produce a gasoline substitue and medicine to cure headaches. The magazine discovers that the boutique is just a part of Maeda's larger plan for rectifying what he regards as popular misconceptions about the "harmless"and"useful" plant. His next goal is inaugurating the Japan Hemp Party. He is hoping to run for a House og Councilors seat in the next election and launch a campaign for revision of the Hemp Control Law.(TI)

"Yoko" twists her handkerchief and speaks slowly and deliberately when she recalls the two years she spent in Paris. She worked as an indentured call girl in the City of Lights, where minders kept her under tight control in a Chinatown apartment. "A lot of the customers were white people," she says. "It was standard to go all the way with them, but for some reason fellatio was popular and if I did it well, the customer would be satisfied with only that." Yoko's case is not isolated, according to Hanashi no Play. Many Japanese women are forced to work as prostitutes overseas, often in Europe. Almost always, they are working to pay off debts resulting from overspending on credit cards in Japan. Yoko, 26, described as a well-built woman with an intelligent face, first went heavily into debt due to an obsession with expensive brand-name fashion accessories. Then a spell in an overseas hospital to treat dysentery left her utterly helpless, financially speaking. Her credit card debt was handed over to an unscrupulous collection agency that tried its hardest to make her life miserable. And her friends and work colleagues began to spread nasty rumors about her. In the end, she couldn't take it any longer. So when a "broker" offered her the chance to work off her debt in Paris - where no one knew her, it seemed like a good idea. After arriving in Paris, the Japanese broker immediately handed her over to his local counterpart. She was put in an apartment with three other prostitutes, all Japanese in their 20s.
人身売買ルートヨーロッ発」2/2:2008/08/17(日) 02:29:10 ID:HrkLc32D0 It was not a happy existence. Yoko remembers the time one of the roommates returned to the apartment early one morning smelling of urine and wounds all over her body. It turned out she had been forced to succumb to the sadomasochistic desires of a "perverted German." The woman became totally withdrawn, not speaking to anyone. A week later she killed herself. "Hitomi" recalls similar experience in London. Starting in the summer of 1996, she was based in the city's Soho district where she earned about 100 pounds per customer, servicing two to four of them a day. Her three roommates were all Asian. She remembers the time one, a Filipino, was strangled by a john. It turned out that Hitomi was originally supposed to service that customer that day but the Filipina was sent in her place because Hitomi had been bedridden by a fever. A Japanese "broker" who arranges for the woman to be sent overseas tells the magazine that he is normally paid around 1 million yen per introduction. "Since I started doing this job about 10 years ago, I've handled about 50 people," says the man, a former car dealer of Tokyo. Still, the sympathetic coverage of the woman's plight seems an incongruous moral stance for Hanashi no Play. The other pages of this pulpy mens's magazine are otherwise filled with reports extolling the delights of "soaplands" and other red-light establishments in Japan. Maybe its writers and editors believe prostitution is only "shocking" and "unfortunate" when it involves women selling themselves to men who are no Japanese.
Japanese wives in the US endure physical abuse for a green card
Shukan Jitsuwa 10/13
Although wife bettering is a serious issue in Japan, the problem may be even more severe for the Japanese women who marry Americans and take up resistance in the United States. According to Shukan Jitsuwa, the telephone hotline run by the "California Women's Legal Center" has been flooded with calls from Japanese women claiming to be victims of physical abuse by their husbands. Roberta Ikemi, a lawyer who works at the center, tells the magazine that "Since the arrest of O. J. Simpson, the mass media has raised the public's awareness over the issue of domestic violence. However, there's still a lot of impertinent information being disseminated, such as the idea that men are also the victim of domestic violence." Shukan Jitsuwa cites statistics from the U. S. Department of Justice that show that males instigate 93 percent of the cases of violence against a partner. About 4,000 women a year are killed by husbands or boyfriends. Women killing their spouse is about one tenth of that figure.
Ms. Ikemi notes that the problem is particularly severe for Hispanic and Asian women due to the immigration law granting permanent resistance , since many of these women fear that leaving their husbands will result in their lose of U.S. visa stance. At the Asia-Pacific Family Center in Los Angeles, the number of cases of Japanese women seeking consultation due to household violence passed 40 in August. One 27-years old woman, who became engaged to a 32-years old American while studying in the U.S., soon discovered that her new husband was a mama's boy who demanded she do everything just like his mother. Discord ensued and the husband demanded she sell the condominium her parents had purchased for their couple as a wedding gift. "Give me the money from the sale," he threatened. "or I won't sign your permanent residence application. And if I don't sign, you'll either have to leave the country or face arrest."
Other Japanese women, their faces still bearing the marks of severe beatings, have come to the center claiming they are being held as "sex slaves" and pleading for advice on how to secure a green card consulting them to permanent residence. The 【-----------】 of problem, Shukan Jitsuwa points out, is that since November 1986 a new provision in the immigration low requites that the foreign spouse remain married to a U. S. cities for at least two years before application can be made for permanent status. The card must then be renewed after 10 years. This, the magazine claims, gave individuals so inclined a "license to male out abuse" and led to a special provision, coacted in 1990, allowing for green cards to be renewed when evidence, in the form of a police report, is submitted, even when the husband refuses to sign the application. But some 【battled】 Japanese wives have not been married long enough to seek under the provisions of the law. "Moves are now under way to persuade congress to revise the law to enable people to apply for green card status on their own behalf," says a representative of the Asia-Pacific Center. "The situation regarding family abuse has become especially severe for Asian women. The sentiment that a wife is nothing more than has husband's property is just as strong in America as if is Japan." 1995.05.21 Thai males, and other 'Golden Week' happenings Shukan Taishu 5/29
Buoyed by the surging value of the yen against other currencies, Japanese travelers stampeded overseas in record-breaking numbers during this year's "Golden Week." Between April 28 and May 7, some 184,400 Japanese left the country for vacations abroad. And, remarks Shukan Taishu cynically, once again they showed the world that the term "Ugly Japanese" is no exaggeration.
"I don't tell Japanese OLs (female office workers) not to go to the beaches at Phuket or Pattaya," grumbles a Japanese journalist who is based in Bangkok. "But what I do tell them is to change planes right at the airport and go to those places directly on their own. Instead, they go into Bangkok and hunt down some good-looking Thai male, who will take them there and give them the royal treatment."
The source of these available males are host clubs in Bangkok, establishments that post photos of their employees and let the female clientele pick the one they like. The OLs pay a per diem fee of 500 baht (about 1'750 yen) to the club. Including transport, hotel fees and meals, it costs a customer about 10,500 yen a day to secure such services.
In exchange for "satisfying" service in bed, Shukan Taishu reports, these grateful Japanese women reward the gigolos with articles of expensive clothing or accessories.
According to an employee of a Japanese trading firm based in Bangkok, a customer who showed up at a hostess bar on May 1 seeking female company found that virtually the entire stook of women had been bought out by four groups of Japanese males who preceded him, and that none of the employees were expected back until May 5.
Many of the Thai women, however, profess to dislike Japanese customers, not only because of their vulgar behavior, but because, increasingly, they refuse to use condoms.
But the eccentric behavior of Japanese travelers is not limiled to their sexual appetites. Shukan Taishu reports they display an astonishing lack of common sense in other matters as well.
Two female college students attempting to leave Narita Airport on a flight to Guam were halted by immigration when they realized they had forgotten their passports. "Well shucks," they exclaimed. "We didn't have to carry a passport when we flew down to Yoron Island (in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture)!"
・On a flight to Australia, just after takeoff the head of a contingent of Japanese agricultural experts was asked in English by the flight attendant if he preferred tea or coffee. His reaction was to reach into his pocket and offer her his passport. When the other members of the group saw what he did, they all followed suit - while the embarrassed stewardess stood in the aisle with two pots of steaming liquid.
・When an elevator operator at a Paris hotel greeted his female Japanese guests, they burst into a torrent of giggles, saying, "Look, he's actually speaking in French!"
・In an attempt at humor that fell flat, a Japanese-speaking guide at the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo jokingly told a group of Japanese that the sarcophagus of one particular pharaoh had been discovered by Aiko Gibo, a Japanese clairvoyant. They reacted as if his pronouncement was true.
・During a visit to a chamber vault within one of the pyramids at Giza, a mixed tour was interrupted by a burst of Osaka-accented Japanese exclaiming. "This is nothing but a bunch of rocks. All we do is walk. I'm pooped out!" He was soundly hushed by the Americans and Europeans on the tour. "I was never so ashamed of being Japanese in my whole life," remarked another person on the tour.
・A group of middle-aged Japanese women sat about in a Taiwan restaurant and exchanged negative remarks about the ill manners of the Taiwanese - in the presence of many Taiwan natives who appeared to understand every word being said, and who responded with angry glares.
If Japanese are going to act like such fools when they go abroad, Shukan Taishu suggests, perhaps the name "Golden Week" should be changed to "Week of National Shame." (MS)
"We have a cup set next to the bed. Whenever he puts in a 10,000 yen note it means OK to 'do it' that evening." "High-heel Momoko," a 30-years-old female personality from Osaka, has been married for one year. The custom of her new husband paying for his conjugal rights, she tell Shukan Gendai, was put into practice from the very beginning of their marriage. "Some people might call this 'home-grown prostitution,' but for us, it's completely natural. When I dress up in the kind of lingeric he likes. I charge him an extra 1,000 yen," she adds. "He pays up without a complaint." Her "earnings" from sex go into a fund that eventually paid for the couple's vacation in Hawaii. "A new bride feels like she is giving something away for free," Momoko explains. "I have a daytime job, and come home feeling pretty worn out. Our lovemaking seems a lot better when I get paid something for it."
"I was a little put off at first when she suggested I should pay for it," says Momoko's husband Masahito Kobayashi, making a slightly pained expression. Now I've gotten used to it, and I'd say it definitely helps keep our love life from getting into a rut.
"The tricky part is the timing of when to put the money into the cup. I like to have a drink before dinner, and a couple of times I was too tipsy to pay up before we made love. (He giggles) Whenever this happened, I always found 10,000 yen missing from my wallet the next morning."
Gendai quotes a Shinjuku-based sex therapist about a Tokyo couple he consulted. Arguing persuasively that the going rate for sex at a "pink" establishment is around 30,000 yen, the wife convinced her husband of three years that to pay 10,000 yen for sex with her was a real bargain.
Eagerly embracing the new system, they soon saved up 240,000 yen and were supposedly making plans to purchase their own condominium with the money saved.
Perhaps even more interesting are the growing number of wives who pay their husbands to perform their marital duties. One wife, suspecting her spouse of three years was having an affair, announced her plan to halt payment of his monthly allowance. Instead, she told him she would dole out 10,000 yen for each act of intercourse. This strategy helped rekindle the flame in their marriage.
The "typical" pattern of rapid decline in frequency of couples' sex after marriage, especially following the birth of children, has led to the recent phenomenon in Japan of "sexless" couples, Gendai notes. Extracting payment for services rendered tends to adds a sense of excitement to what for many was an otherwise routine duty, and as such deserves praise, not criticism, for adding spice to life at home.
Tetsuya Tsuji, a social psychologist and marriage counselor, notes that it is becoming so common for both husbands and wives to have outside sexual partners that many are viewing it as a natural occurrence. "In a few more years, we may come to the stage where the notion of marital fidelity is laid to rest once and for all," he ventures.
If it ever comes to that, Gendai asks, what forms are couples' sex lives likely to assume? (MS)
Lock up your sons! Loose women are proliferating Hot Dog Press 9/25
They are weird. Not only do they look loose, their minds are also loose. Their ways of thinking and behavioral patterns are nothing short of radical by traditional standards. Hot Dog Press takes a penetrating look at this incomprehensive new breed.
To start with, the magazine, catering to libido-driven young men, gives a name to the group under focus --- yurui onna (loose women). These women, reminds the magazine, are readily identifiable by their loose and suggestive uniforms consisting of cut-off T-shirts or tank tops, tight mini skirts, men's briefs partially exposed by intentional unzipping of the skirts' front buttons and "leg warmers," or loose-fit socks.
Aged 14 to 18, these teen-agers have values that correspond with their looks. According to Hot Dog Press, they have no qualms about making love with a new acquaintance, but abhor the idea of having a steady boyfriend. They have a habit of breaking promises at the last minute but are perfectly guilt-free. The magazine adds that their economic sense is bizarre, thanks to "papas" or male patrons twice or three times their age who buy them expensive brand clothing and accessories in exchange for dating them or giving them sexual gratification. There is even a sub group called "Chanelers" who won the monicker for co-ordinating Chanel bags and sunglasses with loose fashion, informs Hot Dog Press.
In the feature, loose women are analyzed from many angles. According to Hot Dog Press, a magazine that has always tried to analyze and pigeonhole women for male readers in need, loose women are the latest reincarnation of trend-conscious girls. Just a year ago, they took a different identity of kogyaru, known for carrying beepers and making profits by selling school uniforms and used underwear to fetishist shops.
The same high-school girls became loose at the beginning of the year under the effect of increasingly popular reggae and house music, insists the magazine without explaining the relationship between music, fashion and behavior.
Known for its practical hints, Hot Dog Press offers many suggestions for young men hopelessly attracted to loose women by quoting the elusive girls. "I can't trust those guys who smoothly pick up room keys at the front desk of love hotels," reveals Reiko Katsumata, 15. "They should act a little shy." Seventeen-years-old Shinobu Nodera disagrees. "Just tell me you want to sleep with me. I like the direct approach," she says. "Or, I can call tere-kura (telephone clubs) and find a sex partner myself. There are many ways for me to secure a man when I want one." (TI)
Now days,Japanese women are over-charged with 'sexual voltage'
Shukan Bunshun,3/10
"Squat down lower,daddy-o,Give me a better look!" The scene is at "J.men's Tokyo,"a small theater in the Nishi-Azabu section of Tokyo, where a standing-room- only house of young women pay 4,000 yen to see an hour- long show featuring foreign male strippers.wearing only the briefest of G-strings,undulate on stage.According to a spokesman, the theater is so popular its bookings are sold out through the following week. Sexual activity by Japanese women is becoming abso- lutely frenetic, suggests Shukan Bunshun. They read erot- ic comics,go to strip shows and rent pornographic videos. Will this rejection of chastity lead to Japan's undoing? Take"Curious,"the women-only boutique selling sex- ual aids located in a Shibuya"manshon."Its business has been booming, with 60 to 80 customers a day.Women sel- dom buy anything on their first visit, returning two or three times before making a purchase. After 8 p.m.,the store allows women to shop together with their boyfriends;but interestingly, says proprietor Masaaki Tanaka, sales at this time tend to be much lower."When they shop together, they tend to buy a small vibrator. But often afterward.the same woman comes back by herself and gets a much big- ger one."(He giggles.)
Bunshun's reporter questioned a 27-year-old woman who was on her fourth visit to the store, and who admits having untilized some of the,er,merchandise.Did it feel good?"Well,it's hard to put into words. It's a kind of complex feeling,"she replies. Noriko Yamashita, former wife of screenwriter James Miki, sees nothing strange about this trend."In olden times,"she says,"women were brought up to feel ashamed of even taking a meal in the presence of strangers;the no- tion of discussing sex was unthinkable.Up to now sex has been an instrument for men.I think it's good that women can advocate making it something they can enjoy for them- selves I certainly look forward to a situation where male- female equality also includes sexual matters." "Women these days seem to get physically turned on merely by being with a member of the opposite sex,"says Ryoichi Taka, who attends to female customers at "Ai,"a host club in Shin- juku's Kabuki-cho."Before,this only happened when they were rcally infatuated with someone. "Some of those high school girls who sell their panties to 'burusera'shops come to our club,"Taka continues."I heard they even went so far as to grab a host's crotch. The idea of sex with that kind of girl really scares me,because I have no idea of what sort of demands she would make." The sexual voltage of us guys,Bunshun concludes, has nowhere to go but down.(MS)

Erotic class aims to help women get a head in life Friday 9/3 By RYANN CONNELL
Japanese have long been subjected to rigid rules of etiquette that demand they perform in a particular manner depending on the situation in which they find themselves. From the way that characters are written to the disposal of garbage, if a task is not performed in the established manner, it's not done properly in the eyes of many Japanese. That being the case, it's hardly surprising that someone has come up with a course on how to best perform fellatio --- a treat Friday claims is the delight of most men.
The course, run by the erotic Paradise Channel which screens on Sky PerfecTV, aims to teach women who are interested in pleasing their male partners orally, but haven't been able to come up with the means of learning how to do so through any other available medium --- bar the DIY technique.
Paradise Channel is set to hold its fellatio classes regularly from September and is apparently providing the lessons as part of heady plans to try and secure more female subscribers.
Friday reporters visited a demonstration class aimed at snaring potential students and were full of praise for the instructions given by Yumeno Miku, the top performer at Shinjuku Joshi Gakuen, a sex shop in Tokyo's notorious Kabukicho.
Miku's underpant-clad male model was plonked on a table in front of the all-female class, a lifelike rubber phallus set up to protrude from between his legs used as a substitute for the real thing. The teacher, dressed in the loose socks and high school girl uniform that seems to be the preferred dress of titillation for many Japanese men, then provided instructions on a "countless number" of masturbation techniques. She also got down to business by demonstrating the correct way for a woman to use her tongue and fingers to ensure a man's pleasure.
Friday says that even though the tool being used as a specimen wasn't a real one, Miku's tongue and finger movements were extraordinarily realistic. Students were in fact so enchanted by the class that they forgot to keep notes and instead kept an intent watch on what was going on.
As part of the same demonstration course, the weekly adds that the students were blessed with the presence of Pussy Tamami, a renowned writer on the adult entertainment industry. Tamami gave lessons on such subjects as the most effective ways to fondle a scrotum or stimulate a sphincter.
Friday, uncharacteristically, worries about the effects the class may have on society. It says that there is considerable cause for worry if the class takes off and the nation is hit with a sudden proliferation of proficient fellatio performers --- a change likely to deal a blow to the nation's mores.
Then again, it's not hard to see the course taking off with both sexes, particularly because it will represent one of the few opportunities when men here change their usual stance of preferring that women keep their mouths shut.
Readers are no doubt acquainted with Murphy's Law,which states,"Shippai suru kanousei no aru mono wa,shippai su ru"(If any- thing can possibly go wrong it will.)But since last July, things have been going anything but wrong for ASCII,the Shibuya-based pub- lisher of computer books and software. That's when it marketed a Japanese translation of the original English work by Arthur C. Bloch. The book has already sold over a million copies. On Feb. 28,ASCII launched sale of a sequel entitled Zoku:Maa- fi no Housoku,The 235-page work (price;1,200 yen)is made up exclusively of wacky laws, theorems, axioms and postulates con- tributed by Japanese enthusiasts of the famous law who are deter- mined to show that things can go every bit as wrong here as they do in the United States. While it remains to be seen if this work will eventually be trans- lated into English and start contributing to Japan's foreign trade defict, what is certain is that Japan is providing to be an apt pupil of the science of Murphology.Read on,and discover the many ways for things to go wrong in Japan.
Morishita's Law of New Car Ownership: You always spill the juice on a new car's seat immediately after peeling off the protective vinyl cover.
Karasawa's Law of Minimum Wages: The compensation for any job posted"650-900yen an hour" is 650 yen.
Okada's Law of Teamwork: The person who emphasizes'o-tagai sama'(for our mutual benefit) is always defending a self-serving position.
Yamaguchi's Law of Viewer Complaints: The people who most often complain to broadcasting stations about lowbrow TV programs are the ones who watch them the most.
Other Astute Observations
Real eatate(?) agent flyers: A rental property that claims to be a "10-minute walk from the station"is really 20 minutes away:"for-year-old buildings"are twice that age;and"great view"means you have to climb a steep(?) hill to get there.
Elevators: If one enters a building served by only one single elevator and happens to be in a great hurry,or if is involved,a climb of more than three flights of steps, the elevator at that particular moment will always be undergoing its periodic inspection.
Dogs: The degree of annoyance of a dog's bark is inversely proportional to its body weight.
Computers: The software installation always fails on the 14th floppy disk.
Bargain Sales 1.The goods on sale are always sold out. 2.The items being offered at half price are items made to be sold at half price. 3.Price rebates offered due to appreciation of the yen have noth- ing to do with imports. 4.So-called"last chance bargain"opportunities never end. 5.If a store advises that"some of the items offered on sale might be of a different color or pattern,"the only ones you see at the sale will be ghastly.(MS)

1995.07.30 Any truth to the rumors linking Nomo to Heidi Fleiss? Friday 8/4 By NW(Nathan Westby)
The fact that professional baseball player lives in the vicinity of a boutique run by a convicted panderer wouldn't be enough to make most newspapers.
But when Hideo Nomo, the strike-out artist for the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss are the names involved, you can stop the presses.
In its most recent issue, Friday introduces a “surprise”statement it fetched during an interview with Fleiss at her Santa Monica shop.
The Hollywood madam autographed two T-shirts for Dodgers teammate Mike Piazza to give to Nomo. While this is hardly a crime, its enough to get tongues wagging.
Fleiss was freed on 200,000 dollars bail in May pending an appeal of a conviction that she ran a prostitution ring where jet-setting clients spent thousands of dollars for a night with the woman of their dreams.
Nomo lives alone in the Santa Monica area, the same general ballpark in which Fleiss's boutique is found. Moreover,he is living separately from his beloved wife and child during his Major League stint, and perhaps,Friday speculates,he's lonely. The Tornado's unique pitching style, composure under pressure, Japanese heritage and especially his winning ways have made him a star in Los Angeles. The price for infield seats at Dodger Stadium gofor nine-times the regular rate on day(or nights)when Nomo starts
As for Fleiss, her shop is a magnet for celebrities. Friday quotes her,“There's Madonna,Snoop Doggy Dog, Whoopi Goldberg,Brad Pitt and, just so many famous people that I can't remember.” She goes on to list more, including Piazza, the catcher for the Dodgers who has been so good to Nomo. Which brings us back to the “surprising”remark, that is the cause of concern.
She tells the Friday scribe,“Oh! By the way,Piazza was in here the other day. He told me to put my signature on two T-shirts he said he was buying for Nomo. ” 彼女がフライデーの記者に言うには、「あ!ところで、ピアッツァが先日ここに来たわ。野茂のために買うんだって言ってた2枚のTシャツにサインするように私に頼んだのよ。」
And the reason she agreed to sign the T-shirt was not because she likes Piazza but because, she said,“I'm sort of a Dodgers fan, too, you know. And I want Nomo to do as well as he can.”(NW)
19951126 Yakuza cleanup pushes up prices for illegal guns
Focus 11/22
"Compared with what they's been selling for just a while ago,the street price for a renkon is about double these days,"remarks"A."a yakuza (gang)member who trades in illegal firearms."Renkon"is the Japanese word for lotus root,an elongated tuber perforated with large holes.By extension,it's the slang word among gangsters for a revolver, whose rotary bullet chamber it vaguely resembles. If you can make contact with a seller,"A"tells Focus,a renkon these days will cost you at least 500,000(6にも見えます) yen;and an automatic handgun sells for about 100,000 over that price. This development does not mean that less merchandise is available. In addition to handguns, the gunrunners are also reportedly able to deal in naga-mono,or long guns, including such paramilitary weapons as the U.S.-made MA-1 or the Kalashnikov AK-74,If you're determined to get one, however, you can expect to shell out about 3 million yen. Focus notes thae when illegal guns rise in prise, the same goes for their ammunition. At 5,000 yen for each round of revolver ammo, 7,000 to 8,000 yen for large-bore automatic shells, and 30,000 yen per round for rifle ammunition,it's pretty obvious that gun buffs,or aspiring assassins will be obliged to pick their intended targets sparingly.
What's the reason for this sudden surge in prices?Well, like so many other bizaree things this year,it appears that the AUM Shinrikyo is once again to blame.Focus reports that on Oct.20,a number of yakuza organi- zations met for a confab in the Tokyo area, and one result of the meeting was an agreement to compile lists of former gang members, with the inten- tion of tracking down renegades whom they suspect helped AUM obtain its armaments. "The gangs were told that if they couldn't do anything to curb the opera- tion of these renegades, they'd be hit hard by the police,"an off-the- record source inside the police tells Focus."So they went after the gunrun- ners, and while they were at it,they also got rid of some troublemaking foreigners as well." The deadline for submitting the list was Nov. 10.This operation is said to be funded by a war chest od between 20 and 30 million yen that will be used to hunt down the troublemakers.
These developments, according to Focus, have forced people engaged in the arms trade to make some quick changes in the sources of weapons. After spending decades making contacts in China,North Korea and Russia, these had to be quickly abandoned under pressure from the authorities, and alternatives found in the Philippines and Thailand. While the gangsters scrambled to seek stable supplies, the losses on their transactions are said to have mounted into the hundreds of million of yen--which they are now attempting to recover by boosting prices. "If anything, the situation is even more dangerous than it was before," "A"remarks. The number of dealers has dropped, but if you're willing to pay for it,you can get anything--even a rocket launcher or a bazooka. One guy even found a buyer for 100 hand grenades. Some people out there will do anything to get their hands on weapons."(MS)

That varies, from the 21-year-old “image-club” employee who enjoys having naked girls for co-workers, to the 25-year-old “health”-club manager who was smart enough to recognize opportunity when it tapped him on the shoulder. He started small, worked hard, aimed to please, and before too long was taking home 15.6 million yen a year. Not bad for a guy who never got past junior high school.
Polling 84 male sex-industry attaches, Spa! finds 49 percent of them are in it for the money (average starting salary:431,000yen a month). That,of course, doesn't mean there's no room in the field for philosophers both budding and jaded. “It teaches you a lot about life,” muses a 23-year-old steward in a kyabakura - presumably a cross between a cabaret and a nightclub. Adds a 32-year-old masseur.“In this job,you really get to understand the ways of women.” Spa!
Still,no philosophy nowadays is so abstract that it doesn't rest on a solidunderpinning of economics, and if there's an exception to that rule, the sex-play trade doesn't provide it. Not that the economic laws governing the “floating world”are necessarily identical to those prevailing elsewhere - in the midst of across-the-board economic stagnation, for instance, the sex industry and its offshoots are brimming with health.
Every day, says Spa!,a new club, parlor, salon, soapland or what have you opens in “entertainment mecca,” Tokyo's Kabukicho. This proliferation follows hard on the heels of the police's abruptly aborted “purify Kabukicho”campaign. What caused the raids to stop so suddenly? Spa! suggests AUM and the Hanshin earthquake, which gave the police other things to think about, may have had something to do with it. Spa!
Be that as it may, here's Koichi Yamamoto,27,waking up circa 9 a.m.to the ring of the phone. Can the night really have fled so quickly? Understandable after all -there was so little of it. Four hours' sleep - on the premises - is the lot of an image-club manager, and Yamamoto, used to it by now, stifles a yawn, gamely picks up the receiver and takes the day's first appointment (“I'll drop by around 1:30,be sure to set me up with A-ko-san.”) The establishment opens for buisiness at 10 a.m.and keeps humming deep into the small hours.
How does Yamamoto feel about working 105-hour weeks? The intensity of the competition thrills him,he tells Spa!,as does his 500,000-yen monthly paycheck. One day he hopes to be managing his own establishment. “My wife? With all the money I'm making, she doesn't mind if I don't come home,”Yamamoto says. “For now, work is my wife.”(MH)
What to do with Old Betsy? Shukan Hoseki 11.2
The Shukan Hoseki went on the investigative warpath in its Nov.2 issue to find out why there is such a difference between the cash offered for used cars at used-car dealers and the trade-in values at regular dealers. It all started when a photographer for the magazine decided to get rid of the used Toyota Crown Wagon he had bought five months earlier for 1.2 million yen.It was appraised at just 650,000 yen by the dealer which claimed to offer top dollar for used cars. In the past,Japanese nearly always tool Old Betsy back to the dealer when they decided it was time for a new car, unlike people in most other countries. Now,more and more Japanese are selling Old Betsy to a used-car dealer for cold cash. Used-car dealers assess car values by their own standards, but the assess- ments are based mainly on the so-called"Silver Book"published by JAC,a large used-car chain. In turn,Silver Book values are based largely on auction prices.Auctions have markedly increased as the demand for affordable cars broadens.Meanwhile,new-car dealers continue to use the stock quotations for used cars, and will not pay any more than stock.
Your car's auction value will depend on its features, including its color and various other factors up to and including current astrological sign.Recreational vehicles and 4-wheel drivers sell well in the fall season,so now is the time to move if you want to get rid of one of those. The sporty types favored by young buyers are badly devalued by an automatic transmission, while small and mid- sized sedans are just the opposite, very hard to sell if they come with a manual tranny. The photographer took Crown Wagon(1988, 74,358 km,Navy blue)to a JAC franchise for an assessment.Result after an over-30-minute inspection: 650,000 yen.The franchiser explained that the Silver Book list value was 780,000 yen.To this had been added 50,000 yen for some features but, because of the high mileage,he had been docked 180,000 yen. Next,he took it to a Toyota dealer. After a 30-minute inspection and another 10 minutes for calculations, the car was appraised at 292,000 yen from a stock value of 510,000 yen. The biggest minus was the mileage, the mechanic explained. The Navy color had dropped it a further 100,000 yen, while a pearl white color would have boosted it by 70,000 yen. So the Silver Book value immediately added 140,000 yen to the resale price of the Crown Wagon, and the calculations of the used-car dealer added another 212,000 yen over the quoted offer by the Toyota dealer. Are you ever better off going to a dealer?Yes,said one used-car seller. If your car is an unpopular model or an unpopular color, you may well get a bet- ter deal when trading it in for a new car.Nerds, take note!(DD)
It all started about five years ago when the growing number of young men who didn't mind serving as chauffeurs for women they admired but couldn't attract gave birth to a new word, asshii(driving only). Now there are mitsugu- kun.femio and tsukibito-kun,referring to men who offer financial contributions to women they worship, put on unisex clothes and carry their girlfriends'hand- bags, respectively. These are all different manifestations of the same trend-- Japanese men are increasingly drifting away from the traditional ideal of mas- culinity.Spa! believes that Japanese men have contracted an illness called yasashii-byo(gentleness disease).
The magazine bases the 10-page report on an original survey on an unspeci- fired number of men in their 20s and 30s.According to Spa!,most guys suffer- ing from yasashii-byo show one of the two major symptoms--narcissism and perseverance. The first type agree to everything domineering women demand. They do so because self-sacrifice gives them pleasure and satisfaction. Mr.A is a good example.According to Spa!, the 30-year-old company employee feels the happiest when he is with a woman who has continuously treated him coldly, but comes to him whenever her relationship with another man sours,"For her,I'm someone who is always there to take her out for a drive when she feels terrible because of her problems with her boyfriend." explains Mr.A."I spent 3 million yen on a new car just for that purpose.I thor- oughly research our destination before going anywhere with her. When we arrive,we check into separate hotel rooms. But it's OK,sex is a hassle." Narcissists are obsessed with broad-mindedness.Mr.B,a 32-year-old think- tank worker tells Spa! he took seven days off from work to serve as a volun- tary mediator for his former girlfriend and her allegedly unfaithful husband. "My reputation at work suffered."says Mr.B,"but I freed myself from a lin- gering sense of guilt for not accepting her self-indulgence."
The second type cling to the notion of doing something beneficial for women they love and idolize.Mr.C,29,is hopelessly crazy about Miss K.a woman he met 16 years ago.Spa! says he never tried to approach her and ignores her loose reputation. Mr.C believes that she must be grateful for his willingness to lend an ear to her problems around the clock. Mr.D may be even harder to understand.Spa! says the 32-year old is wait- ing for Miss R,a woman who walked out on him 18 months ago,to come back, like she did three times in the last six years."Well,it makes me angry." Mr.D admits,"but when she falls in love with somebody else, she can't listen to me.After all,it might be my fault."Mr.D always allowed Miss R to pursue new romance, but was always there to pick up the pieces when the relationship broke up.Mr.D relates to Spa! his belief in "unconditional love." In concluding,Spa! likens these men,who are extremely convenient for egotistic, manipulative women, to teen-age girls who are in love with the con- cept of romantic love--they are expecting too much and doing too little.(TI)
1997,12,28 Hubby-dumpers'beds not made of roses Shukan Taishu 1/5-12 By (RC)Ryann Connell 夫を捨てた女の生活は楽なものではない 週刊大衆 1月5-12日号 By ライアン・コネル
"Look. I don't give a damn whether you cook for me, but at least make the kid's breakfast," Mutsumi Misawa's ex-husband said to her one day. "I'd cook anytime, but whenever I go in the kitchen you come up behind me and start feeling me up, you dirty bastard," she snapped back.
Trivial though the quarrel seemed, Shukan Taishu notes, it was the final straw for Misawa. She promptly divorced her "dirty old man."
Misawa got a 1 million yen settlement and 40,000yen a month to pay for her 2-year-old son. She got a part-time job and, with welfare payments, was managing to get by--at first.
While married, Misawa and her son had been covered by her husband's health insurance. That was gone, the boy got sick and money started to disappear. Her ex-husband's family refused to help her financially and her former hubby refused to even acknowledge her existence.
People would learn she was divorced and isolate her. The bills mounted up, the kid kept screaming. She waited till her son had gone to sleep, then had a sip of brandy. Within week's the nightly sip had become a bottle.
Out on the town one night, Misawa met a young man she liked and took him home for a little fun. A couple of weeks later, she started an affair with a married man from work.
"It doesn't really matter who it is I sleep with. Anyone'll do. I just need someone to rely on," she says, her loneliness evident. Divorce counselor and writer Hiromi Ikeuchi says that women like Misawa are not alone. "Some women think being divorced is kind of cool. It isn't always that romantic." she says.
Divorce lawyer Yuko Taniguchi agrees. "It seems most divorced women are having a tough time. To combat frustration, some turn to alcohol, others beat their kids. Just because the women get divorced doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be happy." she says.
Shukan Taishu gives some examples to support what Taniguchi says. Yoko Takagi, 35, divorced her husband and took her two children to live with her mother.
Burdened by the expenses of caring for the kids, Takagi says she had no choice but to sell her body in a seikan health, a kind of massage parlor, to pay her bills. "On a good day, I can make as much as 50,000 yen, I only work from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. so I can go and pick up my kids from the day-care center," she says.
Shukan Taishu notes, not without a hint of irony, that many divorced women now yearn for the men who once shared their lives.(RC)

What's the attraction of corpses for young women? Weekly Playboy 11/28
Young women are difficult creatures to understand. Weekly Playboy, a magazine devoted to the nearly impossible task of reading their minds, reports its latest discovery and attempts to explain the odd phenomenon under the grabbing headline,"Women who love dead bodies are rapidly on the rise."
The three-page report-analysis is based on two surprise discoveries by the magazine's editors ― a new magazine introducing the personal history and modus operandi of convicted murderers is a hot seller and a natural history exhibit in Tokyo displaying genuine corpses as specimens is jam-packed.
These two happenings might not be related, but the magazine thinks otherwise. The magazine maintains that the two are different manifestations of a new, but largely unrecognized, boom among young women ― admiring photographs of dead human bodies and stories of blood-thirsty criminals.
Whichever might be the case, what is happening deserves attention. Weekly Playboy reports that a new magazine titled "Shukan Murder Casebook" sold 850,000 copies of its inaugural issue. Weekly Playboy quotes the editor of the eccentric journal, translated from a British original, and informs that more than 60 percent of its readers are women in their 20s.
Young women are also rushing to the "World of Human Bodies" exhibition now being shown at the National Science Museum in Ueno, Tokyo. An investigator from Weekly Playboy discovers that high-school girls sporting chapatsu (died brown hair) and coeds wearing mini skirts and long boots, the types rarely seen at science museums, are forming crowds in front of glass cases containing such specimens as a sliced human body and skulls. A spokesman for the exhibition tells Weekly Playboy that 60 percent to 65 percent of visitors are women, mostly in their late teens to early 20s.
"Everyone in our class is talking about this exhibition, so I came today to check it out," offers a female senior high-school student. She adds that many students at her school are avid readers of "Shukan Murder Casebook."
Criminal psychologist Akira Sakuta says that women may be drawn to dead bodies and murder cases because of their sense of aggression is normally repressed. "Other women might develop sympathy for the criminal (as they read his murder story) and even feel a sense of criminal accomplishment in the end through identification with the protagonist," suggests Sakura who offers his expertise to "Shukan Murder Casebook" as a supervisor.
A 25-year-old woman who loves murder stories and corpses endorses Sakata's view. Analyzing her own fascination, the woman says, "When I was sexually awakened, I went mad over horror movies and splatter videos. I think women masturbate psychologically by watching cruel scenes, just like men release their accumulated sexual energy by looking at nude phottos." (TI)

Hotels serve up exotic new ideas to generate business
Shukan Asahi 11/3
It was dark and steamy night last August, when a man was found mur- dered--his nock snapped as easily as one of those chocolate-covered "Pocky"pretzels---in the fifth-floor banquest room of Shinjuku's Keio Plaza Hotel,But instead of dialing 110 to bring police rushing to the scene, several hundred paying hotel guests set out to truck down his killer on their own. This "Mystery Night," which began with a one-hour drama performed by professional actors, gave the amateur sleuths plenty of clues--and even more red herrings. Was there a message pointing to the killer's identi- ty concealed inside a roll of toilet paper in the lavatory?Did some pills, arranged in the shape of a star on the restaurant table, reveal who the killer might be? The guests had most of the night to figure it out;they returned to the banquest room at 4:00 a.m. to slap the handcuffs on who they thought was the killer.More than seven-tenths correctly solved the whodunit. "Mystery Night,"performed on two nights in mid-August,brought to the Keio Plaza some 600 guests who paid 25,000 yen a head for the event, a twin room in which to collapse after it was all over, and breakfast the next morning.According to Shukan Asahi, this is typical of the variety of experiments being conducted in recent years,as deluxe hotels seek ways to augment their revenues during these hard times.
That times are hard is an unescapable fact. From a peak of 83.2 percent average room capacity in 1989,the peak year of the notorious"bubble economy,"this figure fell to 69.8 percent in 1994.At the end of their fis- cal year last March, such world-famous hostelries as the Imperial Hotel, Hotel Okura and Hotel New Otani all reported revenues had declined for the past three years running, with the latter two institutions operating in the red. Kazushi Sakai, general manager of the Tokyo ANA Hotel, tells Shukan Asahi,"Hotels are always the first place to feel the effects of a dip in the economy, and the last ones to benefit from a recovery." Whereas just a few years ago hotels were turning away business, they are now forced to come up with some innovative ways to attract paying customers to their guest rooms and restaurants.Shukan Asahi gives these examples. ・During the past summer, the Ginza Tokyu Hotel offered a mug of draft beer in exchange for each unused telephone card presented by a customer. (The cards were then used for payment of the hotel's telephone bill.) ・The New Otani launched a "pajama plan,"in which female guests were presented with a choice from five patterns of sleepwear they could take home with them.
・As a part of its overnight package, the Ginza Tokyu Hotel from last May has offered a birds-eye tour of the city by helicopter. The price is a surprisingly affordable 19,500 yen. ・The Keio Plaza and ANA Hotels have made their lobbies available for wedding receptions.Japanese brides, apparently, enjoy being seen by strangers.("It makes them feel like a glamorous actress.") ・All-you-can-eat dessert buffets have become a big attraction at a num- ber of major hotels and are especially popular with young women. ・The Shinagawa Prince hotel keeps the mini-refrigerators in its 3,008 rooms empty.Customers are free to patronize two convenience stores on the first floor and stock them with goodies.According to the hotel,"We save on our labor costs merely by not having to have to use staff to check the contents of the refrigerators." In addition to the above,Shukan Asahi reports the practice of discount- ing on room rates has also become rampant. The Yokohama Grand International is even offering discounts based on the age of its guests.Age 40 gets a 40 percent discount. For age 70,a 70 percent discount applies. And if you're 110?"Then the hotel pays you 10 percent to stay with us." came the reply.(MS)
60% of what's reported about AUM is crap Weekly Playboy8/15 By Nathan Westby
How much of what we read in newspapers and see on television about AUM Shinrikyo can be trusted? According to a Weekly Playboy interview with an anonymous public security official,65 percent of reports are based on lies. He should know,as a reporter's biggest source of information concerning the cult is the police,in particular the highly secretive public security arm where he works. The reason papers report false information,he says,is that reporters aren't doing their jobs properly. As a result, much of the information leaked by police for strategic purposes is printed without being followed up on or questioned. The newspapers and TV networks appear to be satisfied with placing the blame for everything on AUM without digging any deeper. This is not to say that Shoko Asahara and other cult members are being wrongly accused, but rather, maybe the "evidence" and"confessions" so far revealed in stories scooped from police sources are not as solid as they appear, the interviewee says. He claims that many of the AUM followers quoted as giving confessions in news reports are in fact still holding their silence under police questioning.
The official hints that there may be non-AUM followers involved in the deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system in April this year ,in the 1989 disappearance of an anti-AUM lawyer and his family, and in the stabbing of AUM's top scientist earlier this year, but the press is not pursuing these avenues. Hideo Murai was "assassinated" he tells Weekly Playboy,by an outfit that may have wanted to prevent police from finding out who helped the cult in its effort to produce sarin. "Investigators believe a sample of sarin was delivered to (the cult's commune in) Kamikuishiki from someone on the outside, and that the cult was able to develop its own sarin based on the analysis of this sample," He says. The reason Asahara is not being transferred to the Tokyo Detention House in Kosuge like other AUM suspects is because public security authorities fear heis being marked by an outside organization, the official says. He also tells Weekly Playboy that reporters should use more common sense with respect to the missing Sakamoto family and the shooting of National Police Agency chief Takaji Kunimasu, ridiculing the Fourth Estate for its gullibility. "Would Sakamoto open the door if he heard bunch of thugs com. ...They could have tranquilized him with a powerful chemical, but it would have been risky."(NW)
1997,12,28 School teachers'dirty deeds done dirt cheap Shukan Hoseki 1/1 By (RC)Ryann Connell
“Let's go to a love hotel,” the 41-year-old elementary school teacher said to the young girl, a lecherous look in his eye. Visions of brand-name bags and jewelry danced before the girl's eyes. “O.K.,”she said, “but be gentle.”
The teacher was gentle. He even asked the minor's permission when he left the hotel room. Trouble was, he didn't come back. And - except for the young girl - he didn't leave anything ;not even the money to pay for the room.
But the lass acted quickly. A simple phone call and the teacher was arrested quicker than he could do up his fly. “Why did you leave her without paying?” police inter asked. “I thought if I paid,it'd be prostitution.”
The Osaka teacher's story is just one of the many similar cases that have flooded the media this year. Little wonder, as the number of sex crimes involving public school teachers has doubled over the past five years.
Shukan Hoseki(1/1) goes into an in-depth look at what has caused the rapid proliferation of “dirty teachers.” “It's not so much that the teachers are bad - the kids have become terrible. It all started at the end of the 80s. At every school there used to be class ringleaders among students and teachers used to keep strict control by using them as an example to frighten other students,” says Masaaki Tokushima (not his real name),a retired high school teacher.
“Once teachers lost their power over the ringleaders, kids just started doing whatever they wanted and things got totally out of control.” Shukan Hoseki says that teachers got weaker, students got stronger and the instructors lost their hold over what went on in the classroom. From there, teachers simply gave up hope.
Once teachers lost the desire to help children develop, it was a case of “anything goes.” And it often did, with students frequently serving as willing helpers. While students' behavior has worsened in general, girls are more guilty than boys.
A love hotel employee notes that many high school girls have recently become regulars at his place of work. “About 20 percent of our customers are high-school girls, twice the percentage they used to be. They even come in wearing their uniforms. The men they come with are all much older. Times don't matter either. They stay for about two hours. It's all a business for them.”
A karaoke box operator - one of the many whose business would collapse without high-school girl clients - says he often hears customers talking about what they'd get if they “do it” with certain teachers.
Shukan Hoseki notes the Ministry of Education says it is doing “everything it can to combat obscenity by teachers.” But the magazine adds that the ministry is full of hot air;the hearings, training and inspections it holds to counter the “dirty teachers” merely amounting to “more talk” among bureaucrats.
So what should be done? Television producer Terry Ito offers his solution. “Anyone applying to become a teacher should have to write an essays on the ‘Sex I'll never forget.’”
Ito says the only way to ensure that teachers can maintain a proper relationship with female students is if they are sexually satisfied, although he adds that “a few of the girls probably wouldn't mind a little sexual harassment if their teacher looked like (SMAP heartthrob) Takuya Kimura.”(RC)
Of the 20,000 or so ancient burial mounds scattered around Japan, all but a handful are accessible. The ones that remain off limits are those that are administered by the Imperial Household Agency as the final resting places of emperors and empresses in the long line of ancestors of Emperor Akihito. These tombs are sacred places of worship in the Imperial Shinto religion but are also of great interest to historians and archaeologists. If they were allowed in the mausolea, the archaeologists suspect they might find clues to some unanswered questions concerning the early years of the Japanese nation. They have been asking for permission to excavate the mounds for years now. But so far no one has been allowed to conduct a dig at an Imperial burial mound, much less enter one. The agency isn't likely to open the tombs to the scholars soon, either, says Shukan Shincho (Nov.9),because the burial mounds are empty and the agency doesn't want anyone to find out. Very little is known about the Imperial burial mounds other than what is reported by the agency in its annual report.Shukan Shincho says two things are clear, many of the tombs have been robbed over the years, and many of them are not genuine Imperial burial mounds.
For example,no one knows for sure who is buried in the keyhole shaped tomb in Sakai,Osaka Prefecture. The agency says it as the burial mound of Emperor Nintoku. In Boston,a museum has in its possenssion a large bronze mirror and a sword with ring-shaped designs on its hilt. The arti- facts are said to be form Nintoku's mausoleum. If such is the case, the museum is exhibiting treasures looted from an Imperial burial mound. Shukan Shincho quotes a Saitama University professor as saying that the reason most of the keyhole-shaped burial mounds are caved in on top is because they have been broken into."According to one record, some schol- ars entered Nintoku's tomb in the mid-Edo Period and looked inside his coffin, but found that it was bare,"the professor says. Another reason the agency doesn't want archaeologists snooping around is to keep quiet the fact that many of the burial mounds are incorrectly indentified.
"If the agency were to admit that the designation on an Imperial burial mound was wrong and tried to designate an erstwhile normal burial mound as an Imperial burial mound,it would have to purchase land from private owners. On their tight budget, this would be a difficult thing to do,and the socialists and communists would surely opposite it,"the magazine quotes a Nara University professor as saying.(NW)

It was dark and steamy night last August, when a man was found mur- dered--his neck snapped as easily as one of those chocolate-covered "Pocky" pretzels---in the fifth-floor banquest room of Shinjuku's Keio Plaza Hotel, But instead of dialing 110 to bring police rushing to the scene, several hundred paying hotel guests set out to track down his killer on their own.
This "Mystery Night," which began with a one-hour drama performed by professional actors, gave the amateur sleuths plenty of clues--and even more red herrings. Was there a message pointing to the killer's identi- ty concealed inside a roll of toilet paper in the lavatory? Did some pills, arranged in the shape of a star on the restaurant table, reveal who the killer might be? The guests had most of the night to figure it out; they returned to the banquest room at 4:00 a.m. to slap the handcuffs on who they thought was the killer.More than seven-tenths correctly solved the whodunit.
"Mystery Night," performed on two nights in mid-August, brought to the Keio Plaza some 600 guests who paid 25,000 yen a head for the event, a twin room in which to collapse after it was all over, and breakfast the next morning. According to Shukan Asahi, this is typical of the variety of experiments being conducted in recent years, as deluxe hotels seek ways to augment their revenues during these hard times.
That times are hard is an unescapable fact. From a peak of 83.2 percent average room capacity in 1989, the peak year of the notorious "bubble economy," this figure fell to 69.8 percent in 1994. At the end of their fis- cal year last March, such world-famous hostelries as the Imperial Hotel, Hotel Okura and Hotel New Otani all reported revenues had declined for the past three years running, with the latter two institutions operating in the red.
Kazushi Sakai, general manager of the Tokyo ANA Hotel, tells Shukan Asahi, "Hotels are always the first place to feel the effects of a dip in the economy, and the last ones to benefit from a recovery."
Whereas just a few years ago hotels were turning away business, they are now forced to come up with some innovative ways to attract paying customers to their guest rooms and restaurants. Shukan Asahi gives these examples.
During the past summer, the Ginza Tokyu Hotel offered a mug of draft beer in exchange for each unused telephone card presented by a customer. In addition to the above, Shukan Asahi reports the practice of discount- ing on room rates has also become rampant. The Yokohama Grand International is even offering discounts based on the age of its guests. Age 40 gets a 40 percent discount. For age 70, a 70 percent discount applies. And if you're 110? 1995,08,06 The shocking drug scene among Japanese students Beijing Shukan Hoseki 8/10 By Mark Schreiber
・ "I've been using a straw to snort heroin, It's easy really to got in Beijing. The price is about 300 yuan (3,000 yen) for 100 grams" ・ So says a 23-year-old Japanese exchange student at the Beijing Language Institute. his campus is located 12 kilometers out of the city and there is little shopping to be had nearby. Recreation for students is limited to getting drunk, playing computer games, sex or shooting drugs, the latter of which can supposedly be obtained in a village to the west of Beijing largely populated by minority tribes, such as Uigurs. The student tells Shukan Hoseki at least half of his Japanese classmates are also indulging in the drug. ・It sounds impossible to believe, but there are plenty of facts to support these claims. On Feb.19, a 21-year old Japanese coed from Osaka went into shock from the effects of drugs and was taken by ambulance to the Sino-Japan Friendship Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The autopsy determined her windpipe had gone into convulsions that caused internal bleeding. The incident was hushed up, and the media reported it as a death from illness.
・A male student at the school tells Hoseki, "On the night she died, I was one of two one's who broke into her room after I heard she was acting strangely. She was lying unconscious and wasn't moving." "A few days later, her father came from Japan , I heard that when the father reprimanded the African coed student his daughter had been rooming with, she broke down in tears". A month later, two Japanese coeds and one male student at the same institute were arrested for permission of drugs and deported. A stuff member at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing says police made the arrest while the girls were pressured by aggressive Uigur merchants at the market place. The girls said the Uigurs tried to force the drugs on them. Their fathers flew to Beijing to protest their subsequent expulsion, but the school stood by its decision. ・China is in the throes of a serious drug epidemic, notes Hoseki. In Yunnan Province, bordering on the notorious ""Golden triangle", 466 drug dealers were executed during 1994, and 2.8 tons of drugs seized. The problem has also spread to other provinces, including Guangdong and Fujian. ・Although seemingly aware of the draconian punishments that may await drug violators in China , many Japanese students find the easy availability and price of the drugs , which go for as low as one-fourth the price of those sold in Japan, to be irresistible.
・According to Yoshiro Hata, author of a guidebook for students in China, there were about 11,000 Japanese studying in China as of 1994. As China's economy liberalizes, the country find tuition paid by foreign students a good source of hard currency. The mass media reports of the "rush" by Japanese companies to invest in China has also mesmerized young Japanese into visualizing opportunities for future careers. ・The majority of these students, however, find their ability in the Chinese language to be insufficient to advance to full-fledged university-level studies. Often, they have problems in communication and turn to recreational drugs out of loneliness and boredom. As if their drug problems weren't enough, report have also surfaced that Japanese students are being deported from China at the rate of two or three per year after testing positive for HIV. ・Shukan Hoseki soberly concludes that while fellow Japanese might be willing to tolerate the students' misbehavior as "the indulgence of youth," it's more than likely that people in the host countries are being served up reminders that , half a century after the end of the war, there are still plenty of Japanese who engage in brutish and barbaric behavior when away from home.(M.S)
1994,3,13 Nowdays,Japanese women are over-charged with 'sexual voltage' Shukan Bunshun,3/10 By Mark Schreiber 最近、女性たちの性的ボルテージが上がり過ぎている 週刊文春 3月10日号 By マーク・シュライバー
"Squat down lower, daddy-o, Give me a better look!" 「
The scene is at "J.men's Tokyo," a small theater in the Nishi-Azabu section of Tokyo, where a standing-room-only house of young women pay 4,000 yen to see an hour-long show featuring foreign male strippers, wearing only the briefest of G-strings, undulate on stage. According to a spokesman, the theater is so popular its bookings are sold out through the following week.
Sexual activity by Japanese women is becoming absolutely frenetic, suggests Shukan Bunshun. They read erotic comics, go to strip shows and rent pornographic videos. Will this rejection of chastity lead to Japan's undoing?
Take "Curious," the women-only boutique selling sexual aids located in a Shibuya "manshion." Its business has been booming, with 60 to 80 customers a day. Women seldom buy anything on their first visit, returning two or three times before making a purchase. After 8 p.m., the store allows women to shop together with their boyfriends; but interestingly, says proprietor Masaaki Tanaka, sales at this time tend to be much lower. "When they shop together, they tend to buy a small vibrator. But often afterward, the same woman comes back by herself and gets a much bigger one."(He giggles.)
Bunshun's reporter questioned a 27-year-old woman who was on her fourth visit to the store, and who admits having utilized some of the, er, merchandise. Did it feel good? "Well,it's hard to put into words. It's a kind of complex feeling," she replies.
Noriko Yamashita, former wife of screenwriter James Miki, sees nothing strange about this trend. "In olden times," she says, "women were brought up to feel ashamed of even taking a meal in the presence of strangers; the notion of discussing sex was unthinkable. Up to now sex has been an instrument for men. I think it's good that women can advocate making it something they can enjoy for themselves I certainly look forward to a situation where male-female equality also includes sexual matters."
"Women these days seem to get physically turned on merely by being with a member of the opposite sex," says Ryoichi Taka, who attends to female customers at "Ai," a host club in Shinjuku's Kabuki-cho. "Before, this only happened when they were really infatuated with someone. "Some of those high school girls who sell their panties to 'burusera'shops come to our club," Taka continues. "I heard they even went so far as to grab a host's crotch. The idea of sex with that kind of girl really scares me, because I have no idea of what sort of demands she would make."
The sexual voltage of us guys, Bunshun concludes, has nowhere to go but down.(MS)
60% of what's reported about AUM is crap Weekly Playboy8/15 By Nathan Westby
How much of what we read in newspapers and see on television about AUM Shinrikyo can be trusted? According to a Weekly Playboy interview with an anonymous public security official, 65 percent of reports are based on lies.
He should know, as a reporter's biggest source of information concerning the cult is the police, in particular the highly secretive public security arm where he works.
The reason papers report false information, he says, is that reporters aren't doing their jobs properly.
The official hints that there may be non-AUM followers involved in the deadly sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system in April this year, in the 1989 disappearance of an anti-AUM lawyer and his family, and in the stabbing of AUM's top scientist earlier this year, but the press is not pursuing these avenues.
Hideo Murai was "assassinated" he tells Weekly Playboy, by an outfit that may have wanted to prevent police from finding out who helped the cult in its effort to produce sarin. "Investigators believe a sample of sarin was delivered to (the cult's commune in) Kamikuishiki from someone on the outside, and that the cult was able to develop its own sarin based on the analysis of this sample," He says.
The reason Asahara is not being transferred to the Tokyo Detention House in Kosuge like other AUM suspects is because public security authorities fear he is being marked by an outside organization, the official says.
He also tells Weekly Playboy that reporters should use more common sense with respect to the missing Sakamoto family and the shooting of National Police Agency chief Takaji Kunimasu, ridiculing the Fourth Estate for its gullibility. "Would Sakamoto open the door if he heard bunch of thugs come. ...They could have tranquilized him with a powerful chemical, but it would have been risky."(NW) 坂本一家の失踪事件と警察庁長官の國松孝次の狙撃事件について、 報道者はもっと常識をつかったほうがいいと、ジャーナリストのだまされやすさをあざわらいながら、 彼は週刊プレイボーイに語る。

The real reason the Imperial Household Agency blocks archaeologists from excavating Imperial tombs

The agency isn't likely to open the tombs to the scholars soon, either, says Shukan Shincho (Nov.9), because the burial mounds are empty and the agency doesn't want anyone to find out.
Very little is known about the Imperial burial mounds other than what is reported by the agency in its annual report.Shukan Shincho says two things are clear, many of the tombs have been robbed over the years, and many of them are not genuine Imperial burial mounds.
3 For example, no one knows for sure who is buried in the keyhole shaped tomb in Sakai ,Osaka Prefecture. The agency says it as the burial mound of Emperor Nintoku. In Boston, a museum has in its possession a large bronze mirror and a sword with ring-shaped designs on its hilt. The arti- facts are said to be from Nintoku's mausoleum. If such is the case, the museum is exhibiting treasures looted from an Imperial burial mound.
Shukan Shincho quotes a Saitama University professor as saying that the reason most of the keyhole-shaped burial mounds are caved in on top is because they have been broken into. "According to one record, some schol- ars entered Nintoku's tomb in the mid-Edo Period and looked inside his coffin, but found that it was bare,"the professor says.
4 Another reason the agency doesn't want archaeologists snooping around is to keep quiet the fact that many of the burial mounds are incorrectly indentified.
"If the agency were to admit that the designation on an Imperial burial mound was wrong and tried to designate an erstwhile normal burial mound as an Imperial burial mound, it would have to purchase land from private owners. On their tight budget, this would be a difficult thing to do, and the socialists and communists would surely opposite it,"the magazine quotes a Nara University professor as saying. (Nathan Westby

Freelance journalists in this country are working against enormous odds. Corporate public relations offices and government agencies rarely grant them interviews. And it is virtually impossible for them to travel every time impor- tant news conferences are held overseas. They even find it difficult to attend press conferences here because of their cliquish nature. But things are beginning to change. A growing number of independent news gatherers are finding their way around these hurdles, reports Aera. Junichi Nakagawa is a good example. The computer industry expert regularly attends news conferences held by top IBM and Microsoft executives. Not only that,he is allowed to ask questions and usually receives an answer. He does all of this without leaving his home-cum-office in Kanagawa Prefecture. How does he do its? Aera says Nakagawa simply knows how to make use of the so-called "teleconferences" accessible via Internet."(At a teleconference) there is no reporter who just sits there silently. All participants come to ask questions."
474 :473の続きです :08/08/30 04:52:40 ID:W87sqfjv Aera notes that in one teleconference the general manager of one of the world's largest computer makers got into an argument with Nakagawa and pro- posed to meet the freelance journalist during his next visit to Japan. If this kind of direct contact becomes popular,it will be the worst nightmare for journalists affiliated with the mass media.Japanese reporters belonging to major news organizations never needed to ask sharp questions and get honest answers at a news conference because they had built a closed system for collecting news. Known as kisha kurabu(press clubs),this system has long stood in the way of fair competition.Under the system, notes Aera, journalists belonging to select mass media had almost exclusive access to press conferences. In the political field, they further excluded unaffiliated competitors by refusing their participation in informal "off-the-record" briefings and joint nightly "chats" with government ministers and party leaders. Members of press clubs enjoy such exclusive access to their news sources that they don't need to earnestly challenge their subjects at open news confer- ences. There is even a national newspaper, name withheld,Whose unwritten code has been to ask no questions at press conferences, reveals Aera. But Japanese newsmen can no longer survive with such an attitude, reminds the magazine. In addition to the aforementioned teleconferences, there has been an increasing number of open doors to news conferences. This June,a satellite TV channel began unedited broadcast of all conferences held by major government ministers and leaders of the Big Four business organizations. The Asahi Shimbun followed this month by starting to provide unedited conference texts to subscribers using a computer network.

Increasing publication of conference data is likely to benefit not only free- lancers but also affiliated journalists with ability and ambition.Nikkei Shimbun's Tetsuro Wada informs Aera that electronic access could free work- ing journalists from the demanding conference attendance schedule."The most significant information such as that which exposes injustices in society,"says Wada,"could only be gained through a one-on-one interview.Journalists should leave information which anyone can obtain, like disclosures at press conferences,up to personal computer operators."(TI)
The shocking drug scene among Japanese students in Beijing Shukan Hoseki 8/10 By Mark Schreiber 北京の日本人学生の間での、衝撃的なドラッグの実情 週刊宝石8/10号 By マーク・シュライバー
"I've been using a straw to snort heroin. It's easy really to got in Beijing.. The price is about 300 yuan (3,000 yen) for 100 grams." 「
So says a 23-year-old Japanese exchange student at the Beijing Language Institute. The student tells Shukan Hoseki at least half of his Japanese classmates are also indulging in the drug..
It sounds impossible to believe, but there are plenty of facts to support these claims.
#3 A male student at the school tells Hoseki, "On the night she died, I was one of two one's who broke into her room after I heard she was acting strangely. She was lying unconscious and wasn't moving. この学校の男子学生は宝石に語る。「彼女が死んだ夜、 彼女が奇妙に振舞っているのを聞いた後、彼女の部屋に入っていった 二人のうちの一人が私です。彼女は無意識で横たわっており動いていませんでした」
"A few days later, her father came from Japan. I heard that when the father reprimanded the African coed student his daughter had been room- ing with, she broke down in tears".
A month later, two Japanese coeds and one male student at the same institute were arrested for permission of drugs and deported. A stuff mem- ber at the Japanese Embassy in Beijing says police made the arrest while the girls were pressured by aggressive Uigur merchants at the market place. The girls said the Uigurs tried to force the drugs on them. Their fathers flew to Beijing to protest their subsequent expulsion, but the school stood by its decision.
#4 China is in the throes of a serious drug epidemic, notes Hoseki. In Yunnan Province, bordering on the notorious "Golden triangle", 466 drug dealers were executed during 1994, and 2.8 tons of drugs seized. The prob- lem has also spread to other provinces, including Guangdong and Fujian.
Although seemingly aware of the draconian punishments that may await drug violators in China, many Japanese students find the easy availability and price of the drugs, which go for as low as one-fourth the price of those sold in Japan, to be irresistible.
