A blind man came along the road. He stopped a little away from the inn.
"Where am I?" he asked me. "You are at the inn," I answered. "Will you take my hand and lead me inside?" He gripped my hand and said in a cold voice, "Now, boy, take me to the captain."
When we entered his room, the captain looked surprised and tried to rise. "Bill, " said the blind man, "hold out your hand." He put a piece of paper into the captain's hand, and went away. ...

Cobuild Student'sでは、hold outはPhrasal verb 扱いで、 hold out 1. If you hold out your hand or something that is in your hand, you move it towards someone. 'I'm Nancy Drew,' she said, holding her hand. 2. If you hold out for something, you refuse to accept something inferior or you refuse to surrender. He can only hold out a few more weeks.
こちらでは、you move it towards someoneとはっきり「それを相手の方へ動かす(=手を出す)」と書いてありますね^^

"Increase speed to one-third," he said. Kamarov repeated his captain's order over the bridge telephone. The water stirred more as the October moved astern of the Purga.
Captain Lieutenant Kamarov was the ship's navigator, his last duty station having been harbor pilot for the large combatant vessels based on both sides of the wide inlet.
The two officers kept a weather eye on the armed icebreaker three hundred meters ahead. The Purga's after deck had a handful of crewmen stomping about in the cold, one wearing the white apron of a ship's cook.
They wanted to witness the Red October's first operational cruise, and besides, sailors will do almost anything to break the monotony of their duties.

Chapter 2, The Human Bodyからちょっと紹介しましょうか。まるで小学教科書のような感じです^^
SLEEPING AND DREAMING - YAWN ... ZZZzzzzzz ... After a full day of working and playing, your body needs to take a break. That's when it's time to sleep. During sleep, your breathing slows down and your muscles relax. Your body temperature drops and your blood pressure decreases. It's rest time for your body, but your brain is another story! No one is entirely sure what our brains are up to when we sleep, but we know that our nerve cells are hard at work even while our consciousness is shut down. Whatever's going on in there is important. If you miss one night of sleep, you'll probably feel cranky and a little uncoordinated. Miss a couple of nights in a row and you'll actually start seeing things. Sleep happens in cycles that repeat throughout the night. ...
DREAMS Some people think dreaming cleans up your memory, sorting through the events and emotions of the day. Others think that dreams are symbolic, concealing a greater meaning. Whatever you choose to believe, dreaming brings together elements from your unconscious mind-images, thoughts, feelings, experiences, and people-and forms them into a story.
FAMOUS FACES - Sigmund Freud Psychoanalysts Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung wrote the books on dreaming, literally. Their theories about dreaming may differ, but Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams" and Jung's "Man and His Symbols" are the major dream books of our time! Freud believed that dreams were expressions of the unconscious mind, your mind's way of revealing hidden desires and fears. Jung believed that dreams allow your unconscious mind to help your conscious mind work through problems and gain understanding. (Pupular Science Almanac, for Kids, powered by Brain POP)

# had better 〜したほうが身のためだ、〜しないと困ったことになる[ひどい目に遭う・まずいことになる]◆【略】'd better◆【注意】会話ではhadが省略されることがある。 ・You'd better hurry to catch that last flight. : 急がないと最終便に遅れるぞ。 ・I'd better be going. : 《あいさつ》もう行かなくちゃ。 ・You'd better keep your mouth shut. : このことをしゃべったらタダではおかないぞ。
20. had better, would be wiser or more well-advised to; ought to: We had better stay indoors today.
29. had better or best, ought to: You'd better go now, it's late.
had better/best Usage Problem To be wise or obliged to; should or must: He had better do what he is told. You had best bring a raincoat in this weather.
Usage Note: The idioms had better and had best resemble an auxiliary verb in that their form never changes to show person or tense and that they cannot follow another verb in a phrase. In informal speech, people tend to omit had, especially with had better, as in You better do it. In formal contexts and in writing, however, had or its contraction must be preserved: You had better do it or You'd better do it. See Usage Note at rather.
had better Also, had best. Ought to, should. For example, You had better finish this one before starting another, or We had best be going. [Mid-1400s] Also see you'd better believe it.
またまたWP英英和で。 カミングアウトって、和製英語としては、とにかく秘密にしてた性癖とかを打ち明けることですよね? で、 ”out”の部分を読んでいたら、(形)(副詞)の成句のところで "be/come out"っていう見出しがあるんだけど、 その定義が " to tell family, friends, etc that you are a homosexual" ってなってました。 例文じゃなくて、定義ですよ、これ。 なんで「lesbian」とか「necrophilia lover」とかじゃないんだろう、と思ったら、 (動)の”out”の定義に "to say publicly that sb is a homosexual, especially when he/she would rather keep it a secret" とあって、 こちらではあまりばらしたくなかったものがばれてしまった、ということですね。 で、 動詞の方の定義で”he/she”ってあって、これの日本語訳(定義の日本語訳じゃなく、英和的に置き換えた訳)は 「ホモまたはレズであることをばらす」となってたんだけど、これってどうなんでしょう。 ”she”を、「ホモのウケ役」と考えると成句とのつじつまが合うんですけどねぇ。
”homosexual”を引いてみたら、 sexually attracted to people of the same sex. で、その定義の訳も 「同性の人々に性的魅力を感じる」 であって、確かに男女別ってことはないんですね。 ただ、この定義に対する英和的訳はやっぱり、 「同性愛の、ホモの」 となっていて、その後の名詞形の訳もことごとく「ホモ」の文字が付帯されてる。
ちなみに”out”の項の”be/come out” が同性愛の暴露にしか使わないかのように書いてることとか、 ”come”の項の”come out”の例文の中に ”especially when he/she would rather keep it a secret”とあるのに、 >>435さんの意見もあることとか、そこら辺は、もう少し自分で調べてみます。
