How do you feel about leather, meat, using pigs to make insulin, etc >>10?
16newbie:2006/03/03(金) 05:58:35
>>10 I totally totally agree. Most people will not wear fur coats
if they saw a video footage of how animals are killed for fur.
The cruelty comes out of ignorance. (And as for the people who actually
do the killing and the skinning, god help them go to hell)
>>15 Since sometime ago we have the ability to make insulin from
recombinant DNA technology using bacteria, so I don't think the pig insulin
is much of an issue anymore.

>>16
I've seen plenty of farms, rendering plants, etc and I have no problem eatting meat or wearing leather/fur.
Could things be better? Sure. I don't think animals have an id or emotions though.
The insulin issue isn't about insulin itself. What about growing an organ in an animal? Transplating heart valves?
18名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/03/03(金) 08:36:47
>>17
I'm sorry to interrupt a conversation.

19名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/03/03(金) 08:37:50
Animals do have emotions. Of course they get scared when attacked.
If you have a cat or dog, you know what I'm talking about.
But that doesn't mean people should stop eating meat or wearing fur.
You would surely be traumatized if you watch those gross footages of the
animals getting killed. It is a moral issue. Some people are just trying
to give a guilt trip to others because they think they are right. It's just
another ego out of their self-righteousness.
You can eat or wear whatever you like for whatever reason.
But you can't push that judgement to other people because of your belief.

I won't deny that people will always exploit animals for food/clothing/etc
whether out of necessity or luxury, and I think it's fine to an extent.
What's not fine though is that even though we're conscious that certain methods
of killing cause animals to suffer tremendous amounts of pain we still persue them.
I've seen footages of small animals skinned alive (and still alive and unable to move
after their skin is gone) and of course the people who do it don't think anything of it
because they're poor, they need to feed their kids and they're used to it.
That is really disturbing. I stopped buying fur ever since and to be honest I don't
see why faux fur can't completely replace real fur for the modern society, but that point
aside, I just think that animals should be killed with little suffering. We don't need to
torture them. They're not criminals, and the fact we have control over them doesn't make
their lives any less valuable than our own lives.
52名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/03/03(金) 21:06:06
there're some ppl above complaining about every little "miss spelling"
however "miss spelling" itself is a mistake as it's a mere japanglish word
the proper english word is "typo" you know
53newbie:2006/03/03(金) 21:12:54
...but I guess this isn't really the place to talk about it.
I said what I said for the sake of answering the earlier posts
but ignorance is a strong trait in us that inevitably comes paired
with our conscience. I know that at least I'm aware about fur
and have my priorities straight so that's all that matters for me.

I just brought up a subject, you know. It's anybody's guess why
a girl looks cute (or ugly). It's just a genetic thing.

It's boring, isn't it?

It was a typo, they meant transplant.

I was the earlier person, and I mostly agree with you.
Animals should be treated humanely, but I do not think someone has the right to prescribe what others cannot do.
AFIAK there is no logical way to prove that animals have feelings or consciousness.
Sure, they may have what we might describe as 'pain' or 'fear' but those are merely behavioral instead of actual thought.

>>61
You can always talk to yourself... I'm being serious. Even something as simple as vocalizing your thought pattern or explaining what you are doing aloud.
Phone calls back home are probably expensive, but you can use voice chat software or Skype to keep in touch as well.

Also, a typo is not strictly a misspelling and vice versa.
A typo in general means hitting the wrong key on the keyboard and as such you would not call a misspelled word in something handwritten a typo.
As previously stated, not every typo is a spelling error either.

The baseball club of Komadai Tomakomai decided not to participate in a baseball tornament held in spring
because some of the members smoked and drank. The team won a championship two years in a row, very famous.
What's your opinion on this issue?

I totally understand where you are coming from. Those animals deserve better treatment
than beaten up and skinned alive. Personally, I'm not interested in real fur since it reminds
me too much of the dead animals, and it's pretty disgusting while leather is ok maybe because
it's appearently processed. But what's bothering as well is those fanatics who splash paint
over people in fur or sabotage thier business in front of fur stores. Could they promote fake fur
in stead of being obnoxious? I guess, we are talking about its different aspects. But mostly, I hear you.

>>67
Animals might not "think" as we do. But, I mentioned "emotions" since you brought them up first.
120名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/03/04(土) 04:13:31
>>119
My point was that while it may seem that animals have emotions their reactions are purely biological.
I agree that many of the people that fight for animal rights go overboard. They certainly go really heavy on the appeals to emotion and guilt trips.
I'm not sure if the outlanding actions taken are more beneficial than detrimental. They certainly get a lot of publicity, but at the same time people have to distance themselves from them.
I support many of PETA's positions and yet I protest against them because of their actions (such as terrorism) and absurd demostrations.
(If you are not familar with PETA-People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals they are a group that has done many stunts such as throwing paint on fur coats,
supporting groups that firebomb animal research labs, have women in cages on city streets.. just to name a few.
Luckily for me they are headquartered right in my backyard and the circus is coming to town... so they are making a fuss about that too, oh joy.)

I have a question. About a year ago, I got 910 score in Toeic test.
How long do you think I can keep this score without studying anymore?
I haven't studied English about a year since I took that test.
I need to maintain my English score high for my classes.
I prefer to hear from someone who's ever gotten the almost same score as
I did. Thanks!

>>120
I'm not specificaly familiar with PETA or related activists, but I don't usually buy into
what those opinion groups say. Their points usually sound righteous and protesters are blindly
serious even though you never know what's really behind the issue. Like, who financialy
supports them?; if they have any interest in political influence over power? You can't forget
there are always those who take advantage of innocent, or rather, naive people who tend to
believe what they are shown or told as a whole picture.
But, lucky you. You'll get to see how they party.

It is no problem that komadai tomakomai participates this. Its resoinsibility
is not the team in a whole but individuals. Its members that don't have to
do with the problem have no problem. But its decision affects its members
that are not related the trouble and also indicates the managers of komadai
tomakomai are totalitarianism.

The realm of Japanese sports has similar problem as totalitarianism. Its
thought breaks away from the realm because I want to do that people plays
sports enjoy. If not enjoy, people could not have creativity. In particular,
Japanese baseball requires players have parfectly to play as to be robots
on the instructions of their manager. Therefore, players lost to enjoy and
grow thinking.

I agree with everything except you sticking to your "can't prove animals
have feelings" theory. If I take that further it seems like you're saying
we can't prove anything if we don't speak the language we understand.
So if a person is looking sad, fearful or in pain, that's just a behavioural
outcome you say, and we won't really know they're feeling that emotion unelss
they speak out "I am sad/scared/in pain". That's basically what you're saying.
Animals express things their own way and their body language for example has
too much in common with ours for us to simply deny intellectually that
it's not a feeling. I just think academics who says "animals don't have emotions"
are overlooking the basics of where we come from. What they're saying is twisted logic.

I think that we do share a set of emotions with other animals and that those are a result of survival behaviors.
My point is that since other animals are not self aware they do not experience emotions in the same way we do.
A cat may be frightened by something and run and hide, but the experience of a child running and hiding is different.
The child has a conciousness to experience the emotions rather than just natural responses.
If a cat breaks its leg it may feel pain, but a child will feel the pain and be in agony from the pain.
Pain is just part of our nervous system that helps us live; I believe emotions to be the cognitive response associated with the physical feeling.

What we need now is peace of mind.

As things stand now, we are faced with a potential danger of meeting a possible murderer by chance everywhere we are.
A number of school kids have been kidnapped and murdered on their way both to school and back home.
Lots of burglary have crept into apartments and from time to time killed the inhabitants for money.
Not a few people love to set fire on any houses they want burning down without being seen.
Those horrible criminals may live next to us. There's no wonder we are feeling nervous about
what might happen next, maybe to us. We have been living in the era of warfare in everyday life, so to say.

What's the why and wherefore and what should do with the situation like this?
Harder punishment helps reduce the number of crimerate?
Moral education can convice those who have vicious thoughts in mind?

What's your idea about how to solve this social problem?
149名無しさん@英語勉強中:2006/03/05(日) 23:57:27
you should remember that about 90 percentage of murder cases are committed
by the family members and acquaintances of the victims.
so a possible murder is always next to you. Be careful !!

Sorry I had totally missed out >>120 when I worte >>131.
I think your point in >>133 was that animals have "reflexes&instincts" whereas us humans
have extra feedback within our brain (i.e. physical pain-emotion-more emotional pain etc)
right? I don't know if you've kept a dog/cat as a pet but I feel they have more than instinctive
behaviour going on in their heads, although not as much as humans (and I think the differene is
due to our language capacity). And certainly, animals like dolphins, chimps and gorillas are more
capable and thus closer to humans. I don't think there is a dinstinct "line" as such that separates
our emotions and the emotions of animals. It's more like a spectrum, and the question is where on
that spectrum an animal's complexity lies. I believe we are the most complex animal by far but other
mammals are emotionally complex enough to feel the same type of "sadness" for instance, as we do.

As for what you and >>119 have been saying about animal rights activists like peta and greenpeace
I agree their methods are extreme. I think extreme is never good in any situation because it just
causes more hostility and it never achieves the right goal which is to have others understand where
you're coming from. And like >>119 I haven't got much against leather because leather is usually
taken from large animals like cows, and they have to be killed before they can be skinned so there's
no grotesque "skinning alive" going on. But I do hope they don't just feed cows purely to take their
skin.

There are obviously degrees of animal intelligence but even things such as tool usage can be prescribed to behavioral origins.
I think the line of when an animal is sentient involves things such as self recognition and realzing that things exist even if they cannot be seen.
Even young babies do not yet display these signs.
The only pet I have personally had was a bird (some species of which I would certainly but in the more capable distinction).
He could not recognize himself in a mirror.
At times he would try to hide behind a perch and he would think he was hidden because he could no longer see me.
Because of these things I do not believe he experienced the world the same as humans do.
