Increasingly, authorities are uneasy about teenagers who drive while talking on the telephone. For many, phone use and driving are perfectly compatible; others are more easily distracted, especially while listening to music. The growing number of accidents associated with phone use also supports this claim.

>>14 ★ Agreement is one of those points in grammar which always (confuses/confuse) me.
もし「私を混乱させる」ものが one にかかっているとしたら、
(1) Agreement is ★the point★ in grammar which always confuses me.
って書くはずだと思います。さらに、もし grammar にかかっているとしたら、grammar は 無冠詞というような実体のないものではなく、きちんと実体を持っていることを表すために a または the がつくはずで、ここでは前後の関係から考えると、the が付くと思います。したがって
(2) Agreement is one of the points in ★the grammar★ which always confuses me.
となると僕は思います。さらに、もし agreement にかかるとしたら、やはり which 以下の 修飾語に影響され、agreement に実体が伴うことになり、a または the がつくはず。 そしてここでは、前後の文脈から考えても、a であろうと the であろうと意味が一応は 通じそうな気が僕にはします。
(3) A (または The) agreement which confuses me is one of those points in grammar.
並び替えの問題で、 日本語訳は、「あなたに早く手紙を書かなかったことを謝ります」 って意味だと思うのですが、 私はapologize to 〜for …「〜に…を謝る」と記憶していたので I apologize to you for not writing earlier. このように並べ替えてしまったのですが、writeが自動詞として使われる場合、このように使うのは誤りなのでしょうか。 これも日本語を考えて確かに不自然なので、そこから誤りだと判断して並び変えろということなのでしょうか…?
I apologize for not writing to you earlier.は、 私は、早くあなたに手紙を書かなかったことを謝ります。 だけど、 I apologize to you for not writing earlier.は、 私は、早く手紙を書かなかったことをあなたに謝ります。 にならないか?
Agreement is one of those points in grammar ⇒「Agreementは文法の中でそういったポイントのひとつである」
ということです。日本語にすると意味が取りにくい気もしますが、英文自体は特に難しいものではありません。 「Agreement」は「one」である、「one of those points」であると。そして、その「one of those points」は 「in grammar」にあると。

Etymology: Middle English sēme, < Old Norse sǿma (modern Icelandic sǽma to honour, conform to, Middle Swedish söma to befit, beseem, Danish sømme reflexive to beseem), < søm-r ( < prehistoric *sōmi-) fitting, seemly; compare the cognate Old Norse sóma (past tense subjunctive sǿmðe) to beseem, befit.
From the same grade of the root are Old English sóm reconciliation (whence séman seem v.1); the ablaut-variant *sam- appears in same adj., samen adv., together.

see という単語の語源 Etymology: A Common Germanic strong verb: Old English séon (seah, sáwon and sǽgon, ge-sewen) = Old Frisian sîa, Old Saxon sehan, Middle Dutch sîen (Dutch zien), Middle Low German sên (Low German seen), Old High German sehan (Middle High German, modern German sehen) , Old Norse séa (Swedish and Danish se), sía (Faroese siggja), siá (Icelandic sjá, Norwegian sjaa), Gothic saíhwan (sahw, sêhwum, saíhwans) < Germanic *sehw- < pre-Germanic *sequ-.
Three distinct Indogermanic roots of the form *sequ- are commonly recognized; some scholars (as Brugmann) refer the Germanic verb to the root of which an ablaut-variant appears in say v.1; others (as Kluge) to the root of Latin sequī to follow; and others (as Fick) to that of Latin secāre to cut; but each of these views involves a hypothetical sense-development which it is not easy to accept with confidence.
(OED Online)
というわけで、研究社の「英語語源辞典」と OED の語源欄を見る限りでは、この二つの単語の 語源は違っているということです。ただ、これとはまるで別の学者たちが、see と seem との 語源を共通だと考えているかもしれませんが、それについては僕は存じません。

>>306 原文: his gait suggested that he had somewhat passed the period of perfect and instinctive agility, though not so far as to be 【otherwise than rapid of motion】 when occasion required. ===========
otherwise の使い方は、最初は難しく感じるでしょうね。 --- more otherwise than [形容詞または副詞] こんな言い方は存在しません。 --- otherwise than [形容詞または副詞] これなら正しいです。これで「[形容詞または副詞]ではない状態である」という意味になります。 たとえば "otherwise than healthy" なら「健康でない状態である」ということ。 たとえば "I am otherwise than healthy." なら「僕は、健康でない状態にある」 ということで「僕は不健康だ」ということなんですが、こういう言い方は、普通はしないはずです。 なぜなら、"I am unhealthy" とか "I am not healthy" とか "I am not well" という、実に簡単でこなれた言い方があるのに、こういうときにわざわざ otherwise なんて 使わないのです。
otherwise than healthy = not healthy = unhealthy otherwise than wise = not wise = stupid otherwise than handsome = not handsome = ugly
ということです。そして、なぜ otherwise に more がつかないかというと、 otherwise の other の部分に呼応して than がついているので、 more が不要なのです。おわかりですか?
more beautiful than Mary これと同じように、 other books than these (これら以外の本) books other than these (これら以外の本) otherwise than beautiful (美しいというわけではない状態である = not beautiful)
そういうわけです。"other than AAA" が「AAA 以外である、AAA 以外の〜」という 意味だから、"otherwise than healthy" なら "not healthy" という意味になるのです。 さらに質問があったら、どうぞ。
これは "with a look that amuses people" つまり「他の人たちを面白がらせるような顔つきで」 ということになります。(ただし、文脈によっては amuses という現在形ではなく、過去形の amused になることもあります。)ともかく、顔つきが滑稽だったのだろうと思うけど、 他の人が面白がるような顔だったのです。でも、彼自身は悲しんでいたかもしれないのです。 その哀しみ方が、他の人たちを面白がらせるようなものだったのです。
(2b) with an amused look これは、"with a look that shows (または showed) that he was amused" つまり「面白がっているような顔つきで」という意味です。

He was reading a amusing-looking book. He was reading a book that had an amusing look (appearance, cover, etc.). He was reading a book with an amusing cover on it. He was reading a book that looked amusing.

To write about human aggression is a difficult task because the term is used in so many different senses. Aggression is one of those words which everyone knows, but which are nevertheless hard to define. 上記のページにずらりと並ぶ例文を眺めると、"some such thing" が大いに使われている ことがわかります。意味はおそらく、"something like that"(そういうもの)というような 意味だと思います。
a grey coat or something と言えば、 「grey coat あるいはその他の何でもいいからともかく何か」 という意味だけど、 a grey coat or some such thing と言えば、 「grey coat あるいは、そういうもの(つまり、それに似た物)」 という意味になります。
>>438 まず、1つ質問してもいいですか? もし、areがisになっていた場合、どのように解釈されますか? Aggression is one of those words which everyone knows, but which is nevertheless hard to define. お手数ですが、このような質問をする経緯は、今までのレスを参照してください。
そしてもし、are が is であったとしたら、どうでしょうか?そうなると、やはり is は誤植に しか思えない。あるいは、前半の "one of those words" の one に引きずられて うっかりと著者が is と書いてしまったように思える。だから正しくはやはり are なんだと 僕には思える。
(4) Aggression is one of those words which everyone knows, but it is nevertheless hard to define. (5) Aggression is a word that everyone knows, but it is nevertheless hard to define. (6) Everyone knows the word "aggression." But it is nevertheless hard to define. (7) The word "aggression" is known to everyone, but is nevertheless hard to define.

Couldn't keep it in の主語が "this swirling storm inside" なのであると解釈すると、この it は、前後関係から考えて "The wind" なのかと 言いたくなる。しかし、 「私の心の中で渦巻く嵐が、外の風を中に留めておくことができない」 なんてことはあるだろうか?その解釈も不可能ではないけど、それよりももっと自然で楽な 解釈があるではないか。それは、僕が最初に言った通りに解釈し、そのあとの Couldn't の主語は I つまり「私」なのだ。
★僕の解釈

(2) like this swirling storm inside(心の中の、この渦巻く嵐のように)
(3) 【I】 Couldn't keep it in, (私はその渦巻く嵐を心の中に留めておくことができなかった)

Today, the deluge of books on postmodernism has slowed to slowed a steady drizzle, and heated debate has cooled into sober reassessment. In some quarters (the art world for instance) the word, if not the issues to which it refers, seems to be in the process of being fogotten. Meanwhile, aspects of postmodern theory have been integrated into humanities courses right across the Western world.

(4) の "Galen's reports were to be believed" の "be to" は、 「彼の報告を信じるべきである、信じる必要がある」というような意味で、「必要」を 表すんだろうと思います。あるいはもしかしたら「可能」ということで、「彼の報告が 信じられるとしたら」という意味かもしれません。

例解和文英訳教本の中に「森林の動植物の多様性をひとたび理解すれば 森林を破壊したら何を失うか人は気が付くだろう。」と言う問題があり、その模範解答に 「Once people understand the diversity of plants and animals in our forests, they will realize what they will be losing if they destroy them.」があるのだけど
>>822 Once 【people】 understand the diversity of plants and animals in ★our★ forests, 【they】 will realize what 【they】 will be losing if 【they】 destroy them.
I am surprised at you.のように 前置詞が付くが I was surprised that she visited me suddenly.のように接続詞が来れば 前置詞が省略される。昔の記憶だけど、理屈としては前置詞の省略と何かの本に書いてあった気がする。
at a lossも理屈は似たようなものじゃないかな?普通の名詞なら前置詞が必要だが名詞節、名詞句だと 省略される。
同じ参考書を読み進めていたら、少し似たようなケースにまた出会いました。今回は日本文は省略です。 People spend at least a third of their life sleeping. This means that by the time you are seventy, you will have slept for 20 years
