Though I'm not so familier with manga, the one I found intereting was Death Note. It was great. Both Light and L are genius and Misa is so cute. In thier battle, readers can't imagine what's going on next.
>>11 My house was forbidden to read a Weekly Shonen Jump. So, now I am reading "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure ". I know about other old Manga. Like "Dragon Ball" "Seint Seiya" "Hokuto no ken". Because, these were broadcasted on TV.
>>1 Why the hell did you build up this crap thread? Don't you know there are so many threads ih here, which makes us confused? If you want to chat in English, you'd better go to " chat in English part...".
There's unfortunately no way around it, other than practicing by using them often, as it is for us with Kanji. Eventually, though, you can recognise parts of words and deduct their meaning more easily.
Just practice. Though the real secret to learning languages is: - Enjoy it.
That makes it so much easier for you to stay interested, learn vocabulary and pick up on grammar and sentence structure.
I suggest simply conversing with fluent speakers about subjects of your choice. That way, you won't get bored, and your English will improve on its own.
>>33 has it right. I'm a native English speaker trying to learn Spanish, and it's pretty much the same thing. Practice is key. Try reading English versions of things that interest you.
>>34 Are you really a native English speaker?? The way you use the language seems a little bit different from the one native English speakers do. Oh well, who cares?
>>33>>34 I'm not >>35 but >>32 . Thank you for your advice. I'm going to converse and read in English in future. By the way, I'm a Japanese. Where are you from?
hey, I'm a native speaker. アメリカジンデス You all seem like typical Japanese speakers of English to me you have big vocabularies and you just need a little practice.
>>39 Hi. I'm a Japanese. I'm from Hyogo prefecture. I want to improve my English. How is election campaign in USA? Which political party do you support?
The Iowa Caucuses are this week. Historically these first primary elections have been very important for Presidential candidates to establish themselves as front runner for their party's nomination.
>>51 The Iowa primaries are a bit different, all the members of a political party try to come to an agreement. Usually we simply vote on a secret ballot and the most votes gains the support of that state's delegation.
I like you, Keira, because you seem to be always cheerful and friendly. I'm not good at English so I don't have enough courage to talk to you. But whenever I see your posts, I read them. ....from your big fan lol
By the way, how is your studying Japanese getting along?
>>56 Thank you! Please, feel free to talk to me! I'm just an average person, just like you. ;) Your English seems fine to me. n_n
My japanese studies aren't going so well. :< The class I wanted to take got cancelled, so I went an entire semester without any practice. But I'm sure that If I reviewed it, it would all come back to me. :D
>>58 Hey! You! I'm not an octopus or something like that. But may be I have a very bad breath now because I've eaten a Chinese dish with loads of garlic. Try smelling my breath? Harr,,,,,,,h reached you?
>>62 Sorry, me neither. Please ask me such a difficult question because my English ability is almost as same as yours. I'd like you to keep waiting until someone who can teach it to you turns up.
ive got to take toeic test and get high score on that sooner. i dont have any patikulaur skills and i havent even go to univercity, so i need something to show my ability to other people who might hire me. otherwise chances me getting decent job are very nill. life is not fair. im smart but my parents dont have much money and couldnt afford to get me(super inteligent boy) into college. poor me. if i born in usual house, i defnetally could go to tokyou univercity and my future were bright like shinning sun. poor me.
>>79 Are you sirious? lol I don't think smart people call themselves super intelligent. lmao
In case you are serious, personally, there's more to life than studying English. You should learn bookkeeping/laws/corporate tax, etc, to get lisenced.
>>81 I didn't know you were learning Japanese. You can count on me if you like.
If you're talking about otaku in the US, then I don't really have an opinion. I don't really relate to the otaku in my japanese classes because I don't really watch that much anime. But someoneelse's hobbies and interests aren't my bussiness unless they make it my bussiness. xD So I can still be friends if I like their attitude.
>>85 Uhhh, you seem to get me wrong. I didn't mean to be mean. I sometimes come across that term. Personally, it's unfair to derogate someone just because they like Japanese stuff. You? And yeah, personalities/charactors of a person are important. Couldn't agree more.
keira, can I pick your brain about English grammar? We are stuck in a rut about an English sentence in another thread. can you read the sentence in question and hummer out a good solution?
"I don't know what that is makes me that way."
Do you think the sentence above grammatically make sense? The point is, "what that is makes" -blahblahblah... What "that is" in it used for? I don't think it's short for "that is to say" meaning "in other words".. What do you think? Can you shed any light on this? Thanks.
"I don't know what that is makes me that way." Doesn't sound right. I suppose it would sound better as :
" I don't know what makes me that way." If the "That is" (short for "That is to say") would be anywher ein that sentence, then it should be at the beggining. "That is...I don't know what makes me that way." And even then, It only works conversationally.
Sorry for my weird explanation. This is my take on it.
>>86 Agreed. I think it's just fine to admire another culture, so long as someone doen't WISH that they were from another culture. Because people should be happy for who they are!
>>88 Thanks for the explanation, keira. So you also find the sentence wierd, right?
According to the person that posted the sentence, it's an exerpt from sample sentences in a grammar book by a Japanese author. (and honestly I've never seen a sentence like that before..) Anyway, thanks again.
keira, have you ever heard of Youtube? It's a famous website where you can post your videos. There are many people who learns Japanese that post their vlogs in Japanese. Are you intrigued to know who is famous among those people?
>>91 Oh! what a coincidence! I've been thinking about starting a vlog myself. xD But I won't be able to start doing that until after vacation. (I'm leaving the country on monday) Yes, I would like to know! Then maybe I can subscribe to them when I get a vlog up. n__n
Why she got attention from Japanese E-audiences is because she speaks like young Japanese gals, imo. Personally, it's kinda disgusting. lol But yeah, it's also sort of surprising that a non-Japanese person has been teaching herself Japanese like this. She has a fan thread in the Youtube board of 2ch. (she doesn't seem to come visit there, though.)
Well, I enjoyed visiting a shrine the day before yesterday. I was hanging around watching fair vendors. At home I was watching dramas, Lost Desperate Housewives. Yes, I relaxed.
If I'm coming on strong talking to you with no self-introduction? forgive me, please.
The next one is, Victor in the world. Not sure if famous is the right term to describe him, but he is doing vlogging in Japanese, is chosen as editor or something like that. The video below is sort of conversational. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehFy8ZOTAk0
>>108 Ah, to my knowledge, applemilk1988 didn't grow up in Japan, but as you guessed, she was here in Japan for sightseeing or something last summer/fall. She says she loves to listen to Gackt.
Ah, it must be nice going to a shrine on New Years, but probably crowded, right?
I'm still watching different videos, but kerorin is interesting from what I can tell. Her japanese is fluid, and she seems like an average down to earth girl. Is it really that uncommon for foreign people to have fluent japanese? I mean, she even went on a TV show because of it? Strange. :O
Thanks for these videos. These youtubers are MUCH better at japanese than I am, so i'm trying my best to understand them. xD
Hopefully, someday I can be just as talented. :D
>>116 Thank you! I'll try my best when I do. n__n I think that I'll probably do most of my blogs in english, but maybe some in japanese too, since I need to practice. :) It will be at least 2 weeks though, since I'll be on vacation, but as soon as I get back I'll try to buy a webcam that isn't too expensive. n_n
>>118 Hmm, good question. I don't think it's uncommon for non-J people to speak Japanese. Still many of us think it's tough to learn a different language on ones own. People say we Japanese are made to learn English at least for 6 years, and still most of us weren't able to speak English. That's probably why we think the same goes for foreign people. Get the picture? And another reason that's come to mind is like "on fast-come fast served basis", I mean, she posted her first Japanese vlog when no other girls did so. That's why she drew attention, imo.
As for me, however, I came to understand spoken Japanese is kind of easy. Japanese sounds/pronunciation/accents are quite simple compared to other languages such as Chinese, French, and of course English. That makes it easy to learn Japanese.
To answer your second question, I would say, just because you speak fluent, it can be amazing to Japanese people. You know, for Japnanese people it's much harder to speak fluent English. So we are surprised to hear foreign people having fluent jananese. That's how I see it.
>>128 Yes, I still live there. I'm going to go to sleep now, but I can talk with you tomarrow if that's okay. n__n See you tomarrow! (It's still Friday here. lol)
Thanks a lot for replying. "Boquense"is a Spanish word and it means a big fan of Boca Juniors(Argentine soccer team). I'm a Japanese but I was born and lived in Buenos Aires, Argentina and I love the team so I decided to use this word as my nickname.
