Who cares? X360 in Japan is selling to the hardcore fanboys. Japanese hardcore fanboys, politically, are a special (in that short-bus way) breed; along with all the social neptitude, low self-esteem, and marginalization that normally drives youth to one radical faction or another, the Japanese reactionaries have an especial focus on pride, and are the only faction in the country that profess that the militaristic portions of pop culture said fanboys grew up on could be glorious in reality. Thus, there's a strong reactionary faction amongst X360's target market, who ake Korea and Japan's absurd middle brother/little brother rivalry to heart.

ANTI-WHALING protesters have vandalised the Japanese Consulate in Melbourne with fake blood.
A consulate spokesman, who declined to be named, said about six protesters spread red ink on carpet inside the consulate office on the 45th floor of the Melbourne Central building in Elizabeth Street this afternoon.
A man claiming to be connected to the protesters said the group wanted to highlight the "inhuman and disgusting" practices of Japanese whalers who are due in the Southern Ocean in the next month to begin their annual scientific whale hunt.
An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said AFP protective services officers removed the protesters from the building but they were not arrested.
Meanwhile, Victorian police were not investigating.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said no charges had been laid because the protesters tried to clean the mess before they left.

Viewing another Asian country as a model in education, or almost anything else, would have been unheard-of just a few years ago, say education experts and historians.
Much of Japan has long looked down on the rest of Asia, priding itself on being the region’s most advanced nation. Indeed, Japan has dominated the continent for more than a century, first as an imperial power and more recently as the first Asian economy to achieve Western levels of economic development.
>Japan has dominated the continent for more than a century

‘Condolence cash’ could free killer rapist Richard Lloyd Parry in Tokyo
Joji Obara, the convicted rapist and killer accused of causing the death of the British bar hostess, Lucie Blackman, could be freed early if the father of one of his victims accepts a £472,000 payment, Japanese police say.
Nigel Ridgway, whose daughter, Carita, died in Tokyo in 1992, is due to arrive in Tokyo this morning to meet representatives of Obara, a 54-year-old property developer.
Mr Ridgway is considering an offer of as much as 100 million yen (£472,000) in “consolation and condolence” money from the man convicted last year of drugging, raping and accidentally killing his daughter.

Sydney's premier zoo is celebrating the news that its 9-year-old Asian elephant is pregnant, but animal rights groups are shocked that the zoo has let a juvenile elephant fall pregnant.

A JOBLESS South Korean man who was flat broke and hungry has been detained for cooking his landlady's pet dog.
The man was held for questioning yesterday after his neighbours spotted smoke rising from his tiny one-room residence in the Jongno district of central Seoul and called firefighters.
"The man, who is jobless and lives alone in a poor residential area, has been quizzed on suspicion of stealing the dog," an investigator told AFP, declining to give details.
The bizarre case involved a chihuahua, one of the world's smallest breed of dogs, Yonhap news agency said.
The man, who was under the influence of alcohol at that time, took the animal to his room while his landlady was in a bathroom and killed it, the agency said.
As he was searing the pet, he set fire to his clothes. Firefighters caught him at the scene and reported the case to police.
The man reportedly told investigators he did it because he was hungry.

The IOC has refused to pressure China publicly about human rights. President Jacques Rogge repeats a mantra that the IOC is neither a government nor a representative of the world's non-governmental organizations.

"It appears the promise has been broken," Engelsman said.

The newspaper had DNA tests done on sushi described as red snapper or "Japanese red snapper" bought from 14 restaurants in the city and suburbs. Not a single one was really red snapper.
In most cases, the red-tinged flesh draped across the small mound of rice was tilapia -- a cheap substitute. Nine of the 14 samples were tilapia. Four were red sea bream -- nearly as pricey but still not red snapper.
Three years ago, prompted in part by concerns over mislabeled tilapia, the Japanese government called on retailers to accurately label fish.
At Chi Tung, 9560 S. Kedzie, owner Jinny Zhao reacted to being told the sushi she sells as red snapper is really tilapia by insisting that couldn't be. "Of course, it's red snapper," Zhao said. "If we order red snapper, we have to get red snapper."
Hur San, owner of Sushi Mura, 3647 N. Southport, also seemed surprised.
At Bluefin Sushi Bar in Bucktown, Andrew Kim, the restaurant's general manager, was surprised to find the same labeling. "It's tilapia," Kim said. "I just saw that. I never thought to look at the description."
At Todai, inside Schaumburg's Woodfield mall, what was labeled on the buffet line as red snapper shouldn't have been, a company spokesman said. "This is an isolated incident," said Paul Lee, a vice president of the California chain.
At Sushi Bento, 1512 N. Naper Blvd. in Naperville, manager Jamie Park said she was sure her restaurant served real red snapper. Told that the DNA testing showed it was tilapia, Park said, WWW "Tilapia and red snapper look alike. They're really close. They taste almost the same."
CHINA - SUDAN 90% of the weapons for Darfur come from China Beijing, in violation of the UN veto, sells weapons and receives oil in exchange. Human Rights First insists that, to stop the genocide, these sales must be stopped above all.
Lenovo Group Ltd., Coca-Cola Co., McDonald's Corp., Volkswagen AG and others have paid record sums -- as much as $120 million, according to some estimates -- to sponsor Beijing's Olympics. To them, the Games are a unique opportunity to tap China's vast and burgeoning markets, and build vital relationships with the country's decision makers.
But there is growing concern among corporate sponsors that the rising tide of protests over Tibet and China's support of the Sudanese government will detract from the Games' commercial success, say some executives, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear their comments could sour relations with the Chinese government.

Down a couple blocks from Setagaya is its rumored nemesis, Momofuku Noodle Bar (1st Ave. at 11th St.), owned by critics’ darling David Chang. Those in the Setagaya camp accuse Momofuku of not being authentic, but Chang isn’t aiming for authenticity—instead, Momofuku gives you clean flavors and superb ingredients
But how does Ippudo stack up against its three closest neighbors, all favorites on the ramen scene? In the spirit of competition, we investigated

We are put to the test now as the Japanese Buddhists. The religious freedom is being lost in Tibet by the CCP's force. We cannot help declaring sadness and protest sincerely. We cannot overlook the monks and other people suffering there any further as the absolute religious people or the Buddhists. It is importantly basic that the religious tradition of Tibetan Buddhism should be protected by the free Tibetans. You might think what all the Japanese monks are doing. Each party of Buddhism in Japan has devoted its energy to the revivals of connected temples in many parts of China after the rapprochement with China. I was involved in the revival of Chinese temple too.
However we had to obtain the permission from the Beijing CCP for interactions with all the Chinese temples. We hardly had freedom. Almost all the Japanese monks know the situation in China will be same hereafter. And we know well that the Beijing CCP thinks Dalai Lama's interactions with the Buddhism parties in Japan unpleasant. I think consistently that only the issue of religious freedom is serious. However the Buddhism circles in Japan do not act on the problem though three or more weeks have passed since the incident in Tibet. Why is it right for them not to say or do anything if the Buddhism circles in China are their important friends ? Tibet has built the history as the Buddhism country centering on Dalai Lama. However their history is ending now. We should raise our voice of protest as the grassroots support from the religious people or the Buddhists. However the party that I belong to may receive a protest from the Buddhism circles in China. And I will highly likely be punished. I'm not asking anyone to join us here. I want each monk and parishioner to take this occasion to think about the problem individually. There might be the monks planning to visit the Chinese temples that they have interactions with, during the Olympics. I wonder what they will talk about the present situation in Tibet. We should face up to the problem with the firm attitude as the religious people. Otherwise we cannot preach anything to believers and parishioners from now on. This might be the last chance for us to be able to live as the religious people or the Buddhists. Gensho Oki, head steward, Shoshazan Engyo Temple, April 5, 2008

Dental problems afflict 80 percent of Chinese; most farmers never brush

SHANGHAI (AFP) - At least 80 percent of Chinese adults have dental problems and 57 percent of rural Chinese -- or 500 million people -- have never brushed their teeth.
Experts from the National Leading Group for Dental Disease Prevention -- which launched a nationwide dental health campaign -- found that only 0.22 percent of China's adult population have good dental health, the Xinhua state news agency reported the group as saying Friday.
Statistics from a recent survey in Beijing also show that dental problems are a major threat to the health of elderly Chinese, as one fifth of senior citizens have never seen a dentist in their life, Xinhua said.
Over 60 percent of the people surveyed regarded loosing teeth tooth as only natural.
Meanwhile, less than two percent of Chinese adults go for routine checkups and teeth cleaning, Feng Xiping, who heads the committee for the study of epidemic dental diseases under the National Leading Group, announced in Shanghai Friday.
The group's nationwide dental health care campaign will provide free dental checkups for 120,000 citizens in 12 large and medium-sized cities, including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
The campaign was launched in June and will last for three months.

I thought this was a great article. I've lived in China and now teach at an elite liberal arts college in the USA. From firsthand experience, as a student, teacher, and administrator in higher education, that students from the Mainland come in all shapes and sizes, but among many of them there is this chest-thumping nationalism that is very disturbing. I went to school at the University of Southern California and I've just read in the NY Times this week about mainland Chinese graduate students disrupting a talk by a Tibetan monk withtactics that were straight out of the CCP's United Front playbook. Students from Hong Kong and Taiwan do NOT act like this; their societies have engaged with the world, modernity, pluralism, etc. in a much more successful way. Many HKers and Taiwanese are able to both embrace their traditional Chinese culture while simultaneously getting along well with others(including Japanese people). Ironically, their
only blind spot is when they look down on mainland Chinese students for being so narrow-minded; while the criticism is largely justified (just read the vitriol on the comments on this post, which basically boil down to #1 we can shoot journalists, Tibetans, and students any time we want in China because of the Opium wars and #2 we can shoot journalists, AIDS activists, enviromentalists, Tibetans, and students any time we want because the USA invaded Iraq) it still makes the Taiwanese and HKers behave in the same small-minded and prejudiced way. Mainlanders return the favor by saying Taiwanese and HKers aren't "really Chinese." I deal with these issues regularly at the college where I now work. So I'm wondering something that I'll write on another post since there are space limitations. But for now, ask yourself this question, why is it that your average Taiwanese or Hong Kong student studying abroad is able to make friends with "others" (including Japanese people, gasp) while Mainlanders still stick to themselves? This is my own observation...

A 29-year-old Japanese woman was found hanged inside the toilet of a Korean Air flight as the plane was preparing to land at Incheon airport near Seoul, the airline said Thursday.
When the passenger failed to return to her seat, a flight attendant checked the toilet where she found the woman hanging from the wall with a scarf around her neck.
She did not respond to emergency medical procedures performed on the plane and was pronounced dead on arrival in hospital.
The plane, which took off from Honolulu, landed at Incheon late Wednesday. The woman had been scheduled to fly on to Fukuoka in southwestern Japan, the police said.
"We've heard no suicide note was found," a Korean Air spokesman said.
Police informed the Japanese embassy of the incident and are investigating the case.

May 21, 2008 Arrest made in spa-sex case Ohio woman thought ringleader; Ky. parlors involved
Yong Williams admitted to undercover agents that she drove 40,000 miles in seven months, delivering Korean women to massage parlors across the nation that were fronts for brothels, according to federal court records.
For six years, Williams acted as a bank by collecting, holding and distributing money to and from the owners of massage parlors across the country, including those in this region, according to court records.
She earned nearly $545,000 in 2005 and 2006, federal authorities said. In some cases, court records outline how the businesses would be set up in other people's names to hide the real owners of the massage parlors.
For example, Soon S. Dorsey, 51, of Florence, and Young C. McClain, 64, of Fayetteville, N.C., owned Island Relaxation but set the business up in the name of Stephen V. Milly of Madison, Ala., according to court records

Japanese Travelers Top the List in Expedia's First Annual Global Best Tourist Survey
Expedia(R), the world’s leading online travel company, today released the findings of a global survey seeking to crown the world’s best tourists and measure travelers based on their best and worst travel traits and habits.
More than 4,000 hoteliers from across the globe provided opinions on the best overall travelers, as well as 10 specific categories grading popularity, behavior, manners, willingness to learn the language and try local cuisine, generosity, tidiness, volume, fashion sense and propensity to complain. The Japanese won top prize and are considered by hoteliers across the globe as overall the best tourists. German and British tourists tied for second place, followed by the Canadians and Swiss. American tourists came in at number 11 overall. http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/200806030800PR_NEWS_USPR_____AQTU160.htm
The annual Expedia Best Tourist research is carried out among 4,000 hoteliers worldwide and ranks nationalities according to who are the best and worst in terms of behaviour, politeness, respect for local culture, style and tipping waiting staff.
While Brits were voted the worst behaved by European hoteliers for flouting local culture, being rude, messy and loud, the Japanese, Germans and Americans topped the poll as the best-behaved tourists in the world.
Ok, I'm in Australia and my Korean friends are all very nice people. At least they all admit to me that they are obsessive about plastic surgery so they are 'open-minded' in that sense in accepting they do plastic surgery (not faking that it's natural). Anyhow, on topic of claiming who invented what, I did hear from one of my Korean friend that she said Koreans invented Sushi but Japanese stole the idea from them. I personally have no idea but I've always assumed Sushi was invented by the Japanese. It didn't really bother me so I never argued.
Korean Pilots Face Crisis over ICAO English Evaluations
Many pilots from Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are on the verge of being cut out from international routes starting 2008. This is because the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an agency of the United Nations, has decided to evaluate the English conversation ability of airline pilots and air traffic controllers from non-English speaking nations in order to reduce the number of accidents, and those who fail to pass those evaluations would be taken off international lines.
Korean pilots and air traffic controllers cannot shake the stigma of having the worst English conversation skills on the international lines. There is talk that the ICAO's primary target was Northeast Asia, and Korea in particular. This is because of Korea's record of accidents resulting from the poor English skills of its pilots.
During the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, a Korean Air passenger liner was nearly shot down by U.S. fighter jets that had made a sortie after mistaking the craft for a hijacked jet. It was learned that the pilot's poor English skills played a large part in this incident.
George Weller Weller struck a car from behind, then accelerated around a road closure sign, crashed through wooden sawhorses, and plowed into the busy crowd, driving nearly 1,000 feet (305 meters) at speeds between 40 and 60 mph (65 and 95 km/h). The entire sequence of collisions took at least 10 seconds. The car was eventually brought to a halt by the body of a victim trapped underneath.
Ten people were killed, and 63 were injured.
Some observers questioned Weller's account, noting that witnesses reported:
Seeing no brake lights on Weller's car; That Weller stared straight ahead as he drove through the crowd, victims flying over his windshield; That Weller avoided parked cars to the side of the road, steering instead directly down the middle of the crowded street; and That upon exiting his car, cane in hand, Weller casually asked how many people he had hit.
North Korea remains a source country for trafficking humans for forced labor and sexual exploitation, and South Korea also actively trades women and girls for sex in and out of the nation, according to a U.S. report.
An annual U.S. report by the Department of State said a growing number of South Korean women and girls are traded within the country and to other destinations including Japan, Hong Kong and even Western Europe.
The report, titled ``Trafficking in Persons Report’’ for 2008 attributed the causes of the trend to South Korea's strict law against domestic sex trafficking, adding that South Korea is a source of sex trafficking for women from Uzbekistan, the Philippines, Thailand and China.

Ultimately, however, Inagawa was not granted a visa to the U.S. because of his gang affiliations, the sources said. Inagawa, who also went by the first name Yuko, later received a transplant in Australia and died in 2005 at the age of 64.
On May 19 of this year, Berner and Redmond were part of an investigation that uncovered in Richmond a link in a human trafficking ring, one that authorities believe stretches across the world.
Its composition: middle-aged Korean women forced into prostitution, four of them making a home in Sunshine Spa Asian massage and Apple Studio Spa in Richmond.

The four Korean women, aged late 20s to early 50s, officers took into custody from Richmond spent most of their time in their spas Two of the women now face deportation "We were even told by some of the interpreters that if they go back to Korea they'll be killed," Berner says.

Falsifying history
The threat of violence from fanatical right-wing groups, which worship the emperor and have traditionally enjoyed strong ties to ideologically-minded politicians, has long contributed to stifling intellectual and artistic discourse in Japan. So it was no surprise that Oe— who has relentlessly criticised the imperial system for stunting postwar Japan's democratisation and its ability to come to terms with its wartime past— was singled out in the recent battle over Okinawa.
For more than a decade, politicians and academics on the right have waged a largely successful campaign to revise Japan’s wartime history, diminishing or eliminating descriptions of the Nanjing massacre and military sex slaves in government-endorsed school textbooks.

JAPUNDIT has become quite the talk the past few days of the Japanese Internet, which has been boiling over with anger over the now-defunct Mainichi Wai Wai.
It seems that someone has picked up on this JAPUNDIT post that quotes from a Wai Wai column we found particularly amusing because it was so incredibly outlandish. Of course, we intentionally inserted the Wai Wai name into the report as a signal to the readers that the information contained in it was at the least sensationalized and the most totally made up.
Most of the comments I have seen seem to take issue with the Mainichi for allowing
