えーと、空気読まずにパタ本社にメールしてみたんだ。
拙い英語で申し訳ないんだが、とりあえず回答が来たんで晒しとくよ。

質問:
Dear Sirs and Madams,

I have some questions about your Environmental Grants Program.
I found that patagonia is one of the sponsors for "Sea Shepherd conservation society", on the following web page.

http://www.seashepherd.org/sponsors.html

First of all, is it true?

If so, what do you think about their act of piracy?

I saw the movie on the Institute of Cetacean Research's web site(http://www.icrwhale.org/eng-index.htm). And I wonder why you support such illegal activities.

Best regards

Hi XXXX

We have supported the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society with either cash or in-kind donations since 1993.
Our Sea Shepherd funding is administrated through our grants program that supports mostly grassroots organizations
working on the root causes of environmental degradation. Last year, we gave cash grants to over 415 such non-profit organizations,
and to date, have made grants totaling over $29 million.

We work hard to vet each organization we support, to verify that not only do they effectively realize their missions and goals,
but also, if they engage in civil disobedience, that they never put people’s lives in danger.

Recently, a Sea Shepherd boat near Antarctica planted several "stink bombs" on the deck of a Japanese whaler,
in order to frustrate the hunt and to prevent the whalers from killing whales.
The Japanese boat has accused Sea Shepherd of an "inhumane terrorist attack".

Here you can see a link to Yahoo’s coverage of Sea Shepherd’s recent actions:

In the past, Sea Shepherd, while adopting tactics of direct confrontation, has been careful to avoid threats to human life.
At Patagonia, we feel they have been effective in their mission to stop whalers, including Japanese boats,
from "harvesting" whales for "scientific purposes." This kind of whale hunting is bloody and violent, and completely unnecessary.
Supporting Sea Shepherd is part of our larger goal of supporting groups focused on conserving what is left of the world’s wildlife,
especially animals that have been reduced to only a small fraction of their historical populations.

We are aware that some of our customers won’t agree with Sea Shepherd’s tactics.
We will continue to monitor Sea Shepherd and other organizations to make sure they don't cross over a line
in their passion to protect whales and other wildlife. We welcome your comments and questions.
