How are you in this cold winter?
I am living in a south area of Japan, and even here, much amount of snow was in last month.
It was serious for us. Almost trafic systems in the city were stopped.

So it is very hard to imagine how people are living in Niigata, Akita, and other cities
in north area.

I can't understand why people in this thread are chatting in foreign language
although they share a common language, Japanese.
And, more remarkable is a foreign language they use is just English, neither Arabic nor Chinese.
I think it's rooted in the worship and the inferiority complex to white, or Anglo-Saxon people.
Chatting in English gives them the delusion that they get blue eyes and golden hair.

English is a way to be more international, a way to not be limited in your communication
to only people who know Japanese. That is the point of multi-linguality.
In the old days, latin was the international language. In the modern day, English,
Spanish, French, Arabian and somewhat German are the more universal languages not
limited to their countries of origin.
Do not fear though, the way Japan has been exporting it's culture to the west the past decades,
and it being a fad now, with the youth, surely Japanese will be one of the more
international languages too in the future, maybe in half a century.

I totally agree with your comment on English. It isn't a language
limited only to one culture, one nation. There may come a time
when all the people in the world understand and speak in the near
future.
But I don't think that the Japanese language will be an international
language in just half a century. As you pointed out, Japan has been
exporting part of its culture for the last two or three decades.
But the culture it's exporting is in fact the sort that belongs to
otaku culture such as manga, anime, and TV games.
>>44
Your comment sounds that you are critisizing Otaku culture.
So many people overseas appreciate and repect it.
I think we, Japanese, shoud be proud of it.

There are four major skills in communication; talking, listening, reading, and writing.
The first two of them are relatively easy. Anyone can do.
But reading is not so easy. It requires education.

The last one, writing is the most difficult skill. Only few people can be skilful writers.
Continuous training is needed.
This thread gives us a good opportunity of writing exercise.

Thanks > 1, and keep active this thread > everyone.

"Apostrophes are NOT used for possessive pronouns or for noun plurals, including acronyms.
Apostrophes should not be used with possessive pronouns because possessive pronouns already
show possession -- they don't need an apostrophe. His, her, its, my, yours, ours are all possessive pronouns. "

People have interesting timing when it comes to mentioning my name sometimes.
I'm awake, just a little sick, still. I have a frustratingly fragile immune system sometimes.
I try to rest and get better.
I haven't been around because I visited my boyfriend over the new years, from the
28th december until the 6th january. I had contracted a stubborn cold during the last
day of my visit, and I'm much better now, though still weakened.

How are you all doing? I hope well enough..
What's the difference between the Let's Talk In English and Chat In English except for
that the former has rules?

I never got around to fully unpacking my luggage, should finish doing so now. Making some
tea with a mix of black tea, dried berries. camomille and st john's wort.

I've heard that a good way to improve english skill is to keep
a diary in english.
I once tried to do it but faild to keep it up, as i hate to

written by a japanese , and it was written in very simple english.
A good idea occurred to me.
I love imaginating romantic staff, then I can make a love story in english.

An idol is normally someone you look up to, someone who has qualities you admire and
whom serves as an inspiration. That is not a sexually related term, however (as far as I have noticed)
in Japan "idol" stands for celebrity-girls specializing in selling an (figuratively speaking) image
of themselves, often via (cute/sexually appealing) photo books and sometimes also recording music albums.
Essentially, they are making people adore, want and be smitten with them as a sort of iconic figure.
Is my impression correct?
Bruce Lee seems to be a good person to have as an idol. He was a strong person (in personality and mentality, though also physically),
and affected so many people and mediums in a good way.
On a semi-unrelated term, you should read "Idoru" by William Gibson :-)
Oh, and if you don't know much about who Bruce Lee is:

Finland has been mentioned in a few movies, for example, in "Armageddon".

I think it's because of their unique geographical position, which stands out in the map in a weird way.
Just like Ishikawa prefecture. It consists a penninsla.

I have noticed that Japanese know surprisingly lot about Finland, more than other nations.
I think that two of the reasons might be that Finnish and Japanese are good in some sports (like ski jumping). I also heard that some finnish bands are popular in Japan
It also looks like Finland is on the edge of the world when I look at a Japanese map.
But I find this topic interesting, since Finnish people have respect toward Japan as well!

Three northen European countries are famous in Japan for their social security systems.
We have a aging society and trouble in finding ways to improve our ailing social security system.
I often hear some say on TV In Finland taxs are high but the goverment takes care of its citizens well.
Japan generally has two choices, go the Finland way or go the American way, which is less taxs with less social security.

Taxes are pretty high in Finland, that's true. But I think that more crimes happen in Finland than in Japan.
Or atleast I have heard that it Japan is a very safe country atleast for a tourist.
I wonder why Japanese tourists always visit only in Helsinki when they come to Finland. I live in the northern part of Finland but I haven't seen that many tourists.
But one time when I was in a supermarket and my MP3-player was playing a song by モーニング娘, some Japanese tourist came and ask me if I knew that band.
She was pretty surprised LOL.

claiming to be a native speaker of English. It doesn't really
matter if you _are_ a native speaker of English or not.

Anyway this time round I've been more careful and things are

You'll see I _don't_ have name and I was pretty circumspect
about working up to claiming any sort of native speaker status.

>>320
Well I do have a few tips.

You can directly correct other people's translations but that's
viewed as a challenge so if you want to avoid arguments then
reply directly to the original request.

If you think that you could "prove" your identity be aware that
some people will disbelieve just about _anything_.

Like I mentioned there are programs that can generate trip
numbers that contain specific strings. This is, as they say
in Japan, a 諸刃の剣 (two edged sword). On the one hand you
can get an easy to recognize trip, but on the other hand other
people can try to 'fake' your trip. It can all get a bit messy.

I had written my comments on the usenet a decade year ago.
It has a problem that the Usenet's users receive spam mails
so that spammers could get our emails via our messages on
the Usenet. If you write your comments on the Usenet, you
should privent to ban spam mails. A way I know is you use
emails on free account (i.e. yahoo.com gmail.com). In recent
year, Google has serviced the google groups, to use the
usenet for people. using the google groups, you read a lot
of message on the Usenet but you post your message if you
have the google account. If you have your gmail, It is no
problem. The usnet has overwhalming numbers of group from
xxx to academic. You might find out your favorite groups
on the Usenet.

(Depending on your newsserver) there's absolutely no need to use
a valid email to post - free account or not.

Google does need a valid email and, frankly, is a second-class
option for beginners and those with no choice.

The best option is, if your ISP provides a newsserver,
to use a proper newsreader program like Outlook Express or
Thunderbird. Otherwise you have to choose between putting
up with Google Groups or paying for a newsserver
(news.individual.net is good and cheap but text-only
http://news.individual.net/ )

Japan is the better country for me because of Japanese language. :-)
But I don't understand the best for me. Accuracy is a good point of
Japan but affects lack of our tolerance. From the point of view of
mental, we feel rich a little. I feel hard that many japanese
don't understand indivisualist. In japan, Groups is more important
than indivisuals. Those who are out of groups may live hardly in
Japan. I worry accuracy has been collapsing in recent Japan since
about a few years ago.

That depends on where you're visiting.
Sweden is a relatively long country and has varying climates.
Way up north you'd turn into an lump of ice if you stepped outside the door without
proper clothing in January, down here you can almost get away with wearing just
t-shirt and a jacket during January, if it's a mild one. It's been unusually cold
this winter, though. -6°Celcius, right now in Malmö, and -16 in Övertorneå (i don't know where that is)
according to a news site.

seems scientists is otakus. To compear otaku with brainy... no comment.
Japanese tend to think scientists as inventors
probably because of animes and RPG games.
573k-tan ◆teb9WQfPoU :2006/01/23(月) 01:16:42
>>571
That's very unfortunate..
Scientists are supposed to be intelligent and skilled specialists, not otakus...
If those are the associations Japanese children have with scientists, then no
wonder they dislike the idea of becoming one.

But, now in Japan, many children want to be scientists.
And, many Ph. D. candidates want to be scientists, too.

US'es people has also a problem about their science education. it is
the problem between biological evolution and intelligent desgin which
is another version of criationism. ID is a thought that the intelligent
desginer made creaters. some people attempts to introduce ID on science
education of a (junior high) school, instead of Darwin's evolution.
Thus, they want to educate its religious thought as science.
Its problem conflict between scientist and conservative Cristian.
Last year, President Bush has pushed ID as science. This controversy
has heated up. US Court decided to ban to education ID as science in
Desember of last year.

some psedo-science caches bit of Japanese. Many of they is not good at

It just shows the ignorance of the writer.

Neet is a British phrase.

"NEET...first used in the United Kingdom but whose use has spread to other countries,
including Japan"

Interesting. I've honestly never seen it used before by a

that it obviously never took off. Using it in everyday

It's pretty much used for something that puts a thing that's generally "bad" in an amusing way or
makes fun of that thing. A good word (LOL, Fun) has to be in the "bad" (lolicon, fundamentalism) one.

Puns are really hard to explain. Sorry m(_ _)m
>>677
The literal meaning of "Putting the lol in lolicon" is something
like "Making lolicon funny." Normally you would not consider
lolicon to be funny, but the joke makes an unexpected connection
because "lolicon" contains "lol." The same is true of "fun" and
"fundamentalism" as someone posted above. It's a pun, so it can
be difficult to understand in a different language.

I have to "defend" my MA thesis on tuesday. It really has no
meaning though. Of the three professors who have to determine my
grade only one will be at the defense to ask me questions. That
only proves how little the defense means and how little the professors
actually care.

Becuase of this I'm having trouble motivating myself to work on
my presentation, which is really just a 10-15 minute summary of
my thesis.

Democracy has worked reasonably well for a few countries for a

Not every country that has tried democracy has been successful

Communism did not fail. The people failed to create a "real" communist
society. Cuba and China are basically totalitarian regimes, as was
the Soviet Union. A true Communist state has never exsisted.

Sweden does okay with being a socialist democracy though.
Japan and the US are just controled by corporations. Voting is useless
here and in America. The interests of the people are always overshadowed
by the interests of corporations who want more money
