Both of the accused said that in response the Asian male used profanities and flicked a Dunhill cigarette at them, which hit one the suspects, a 21-year-old male, in the arm. Amused by the gesture, the 21-year old male said he picked up the cigarette and started smoking it. Both admitted to exchanging profanities, but none involving racial epithets. After a few minutes of arguing, the accused said the couple walked around the corner leading them to believe the incident was over. However, the incident escalated when they said the Asian male showed up approximately 45 minutes later with four other male friends. The Asian female was not present.
The accused said that the five men were yelling at them to come downstairs and fight.
When one of the five men below was yelling at them in Korean, the 20-year-old male said, “You are going to have to speak English. I don’t understand you.” To this one of men replied, “Why don’t you learn to speak Korean, bitch.” The 21-year-old male said at one point during the exchange, he was referred to as “white fat American piggy.”
この30代ってのは嘘だろ、どうみても50代だろ The phenomenon was spearheaded by a drama series called "Winter Sonata," a tragic love story featuring Bae Yong Joon, a South Korean actor affectionately referred to as Yon-sama in Japan. With his baby face and great teeth, Yon-sama, 33, flutters the hearts of Japanese women in their 30s and older, who tell market researchers he rekindles the romantic urges they felt in their youth.
It's a demographic that makes marketers swoon, too. Yon-sama is now the biggest foreign star in Japan. Bigger than Brad. Bigger than Leo. Dozens of Japanese companies are desperate to attach their brand to Yon-sama, or at least to find the next great Korean star. "Five years ago, two years ago even, I could never have imagined this happening," said Tomoko Kamiguchi of Dentsu Casting & Entertainment, which negotiates with talent agencies to get stars for its clients' ads. →It is a remarkable development in a country where Koreans have long faced discrimination. Koreans born and raised here have felt compelled to adopt Japanese names to fight their way up the entertainment, sports or corporate ladders. "After 'Sonata,' " Kamiguchi said, "my clients are all looking for synergy with this Korean drama. The Japanese market has changed. We have accepted Asian talent. After 'Sonata,' we no longer have an allergy to Asia."
LSA junior Amanda Beliveau, who lives right next door to the accused, said she also went down stairs to defuse the situation.
She said she started talking to the alleged victim who told her, “They almost spilled beer on my girlfriend” and “They could have peed on us.”
Beliveau said she did not believe her neighbor urinated on the alleged victims because she thought he would have brought it up then if it did indeed happen.
She added the male also wanted the number for Prime Student Housing, the owner of the building, to get them evicted.
After five minutes of trying unsuccessfully to placate the five men, Beliveau gave up and went back upstairs to her apartment.

In July 2003, the European Commission issued the results of a survey on enforcement issues in the area of intellectual property rights, aimed at assessing in a detailed manner the situation in third countries.
The countries considered then as most problematic according to the results of the survey were China, Thailand, Ukraine, Russia, Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey and South Korea. Respondents considered these as the main countries where production of pirated and counterfeit goods, both for domestic consumption and for export, reached worrying dimensions.
Results of the survey in detail:
South Korea: Trademarks and designs - counterfeiting of high value luxury consumer goods, estimations that Korea was in 2002 the third producer of counterfeit goods in the world. Copyrights - Music piracy in all format, CDs, VCDs, cassettes and illegal digital downloads and distribution. Industrial design -There are also reports of counterfeiting of designs in sports equipment (mainly footwear)

It's the largest single incident of ship-jumping in Halifax so far this year, police said Tuesday. Word of the illegal immigrants emerged when immigration officials said that four others from China -- two women and two men who attempted to leave the Celebrity Cruises ship Constellation on Sept. 20 -- were in jail.
it's quite common for poor young people from China seeking a better life in Canada to attempt to enter the country and claim refugee status, using forged passports. The Korean passport is a common choice because South Koreans do not require a visa to enter the country, he said.
However, it's rare for such large numbers of illegal entrants to come to an East Coast port aboard a cruise ship, and the initial influx of 17 people appeared to catch officials off guard.
For example, in the case of South Korea, U.S. Ambas-sador Christopher R. Hill and other American government representatives have said that the ROK cannot join the VWP until the number of illegal South Korean residents in the United States significantly declines
>>74 >The Korean passport is a common choice because South Koreans do not require a visa to enter the country, he said.
Finally, ROK officials estimate that some 70,000 South Korean passports are lost or stolen each year and then traded on the black market, a factor that has impeded Seoul’s partici-pation in the VWP.[35]

http://www.theconservativevoice.com/articles/article.html?id=7916 Cops Shatter Korean Human Smuggling Ring A federal grand jury handed down indictments today charging 24 persons for their role in a sophisticated human smuggling scheme that allegedly brought hundreds of South Korean women into the United States to work as prostitutes. Named in the two multi-count indictments issued today are 23 individuals originally charged in the investigation and a 24th suspect who was identified following the take down of the case June 30. That individual, *Mi Ae Kim, a.k.a. Ae-Kyeong Kim, age 48, allegedly owned and operated a brothel known as the 7th Spa. During last month's enforcement operation, federal agents arrested 18 of the suspects. A 19th defendant, *Hye Sun Sin, a.k.a. "Pink", was taken into custody earlier this week. The 26-year-old was arrested by CTU agents at an apartment on Rossmore Avenue in Los Angeles Tuesday. http://maps.yahoo.com/maps_result?addr=Rossmore&csz=Los+Angeles%2C+CA+90004&state=CA&uzip=90004&ds=n&name=&desc=&lat=34.07272&lon=-118.3274&mlt=34.07272&mln=-118.3274&zoomin=yes&BFKey=&resize=l&trf=0&mag=3 The indictment alleges Sin operated two Internet sites, including one known as asianbedgirl.com, http://lafuzoku.com/html/home.htm that offered call girl services using undocumented Korean women as prostitutes. Five of the 24 defendants remain at large and are being sought by federal authorities.
The indictments issued charged the suspects with conspiracy. The three objects of the conspiracy are - importation of aliens to the United States for prostitution; transporting illegal aliens; harboring and concealing illegal aliens. In addition, the indictment includes new charges against several of the brothel operators for money laundering and illegal monetary transactions.

"Some places, you don't feel like you're making a difference," Chiu said. "Some of the violations you see again and again, and they're still making good business. Even with a C, Chinese people don't care." Chinese restaurateurs argue that their kitchens simply use too many ingredients and too many cooking techniques to comply with the all the rules of health inspectors like Chiu. Chiu, a Hong Kong native, doesn't buy the excuses. Chiu grew up in Hong Kong, a city with one of Asia's richest culinary traditions and where residents still buy food from "wet markets," outdoor stalls where slabs of meat hang from hooks without refrigeration and shoppers eat cooked food from unlicensed hawkers. "Our stomachs must be used to the germs," Chiu said. Chiu went to Cal State Northridge to earn a master's degree in epidemiology and biostatistics. But she did not complete her thesis, opting to take a job with the Department of Health Services in 1987. She believes the restaurant owners' attitudes toward her also changed with time. "When I started, they thought I'd be easy on them because I'm Chinese," said Chiu, now the mother of three teenage daughters. But from the beginning, she said, she was a stickler for the county's rules. And over the years, she has come to command the respect — and fear — of the Chinese restaurant owners.

Russian ship rescues North Korean schooner in Sea of Japan YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, September 29 (Itar-Tass) - Russian motor ship Plastun rescued a North Korean schooner in the Sea of Japan Wednesday after the failure of the latter’s engine.
The North Korean crew of eleven seamen did not manage to repair the engine of their own and sent a SOS signal.
Following the break, the schooner was left to the mercy of wind and sea waves and could overturn anytime.

Don't all Asians have some kind of penis envy? I know that an ALT here got asked his penis size by one of his JTEs. He dodged the question but it's really funny that someone would even ask that. I did like the build of the Korean men a lot more. MOST, not all, Japanese men that I have met have really bad hair and, to top it off, weigh about 45 kg. I just can't get past the teeth and the haircuts long enough to see much else. Although I have noticed that Japanese women have worse teeth than Japanese men. And I didn't see too many snaggle toothed Koreans. Maybe braces are more affordable there? I did think it was hilarious that everytime I went to a palace there was something saying that this palace was destroyed in the "JAPANESE INVASION".

Cats have a special disadvantage in Korea. They do not hold any position of affection in Korean society. If one were to believe all of what is said about cats in Korean media and popular wisdom, one might also assume that cats live to deceive and frighten people, as well as spread disease. While some dogs, especially small dogs, are kept as pets, it is very uncommon for Koreans to raise cats with similar affection. High quality cat products are not available in Korea, except through U.S. Military bases, which are not accessible by Korean nationals. This means that the cat food and litter one might commonly see at supermarkets and pet stores does not exist in Korea. Only recently has Korea begin selling cat food, but the prices are high and the quality is questionable. Cats are considered to be nuisance animals and many attempts have been made to eradicate the stray cat population, not by humane methods, but rather by beating the animals to death in sacks or, in some cases, boiling them alive in large pressure cookers to supply the insatiable demand for "herbal" remedies in Korea (though clearly animal parts do not fall in the "herbal" category). http://www.koreananimals.org/cats.htm

Citizenship, nationality, race and ethnicity carry little meaning in Japan because here they are perceived to be one and the same. The Japan where I came of age was extolled by politicians as a “one-state, one-language, one-race” nation.
It was a myth, of course. Japan has always had its ethnic minorities: the indigenous Ainu, the Okinawans, the feudal underclass known as burakumin, and the hundreds of thousands of Koreans and Chinese who have lived here for generations. ttp://mdn.mainichi-msn.co.jp/features/news/20050929p2g00m0fe001000c.html

For Japanese women, however, Kaori has found that the top preference of Japanese women as a marriage partner are Korean men and the second preference is American men. The logic is that Korean men are, according to Kaori's description, "passionate, faithful, and loyal to their families, compared to the cold, distant, neveraround Japanese male." Now we have a new, rather serious hypothesis that we need to test. The new hypothesis is that Korean men are more passionate, faithful and loyal to their families than Japanese men.

http://www.occidentalism.org/?p=82#comment-1259 People in Britain remember when British products used to be good. Sadly, those days are long since dead. The ferocious pseudo-communist unions during the 1970’s and the equally ferocious counter pseudo-communist Margret Thatchers years of the 1980’s pretty much put the nail in the coffin for ‘Made in Britain’ stamp.
(Although I do understand that few legacy British manufacturers are held in high regard, mostly pottery and some tailoring, Burberrys name is however something of a moot-point here in the UK.) Funnily enough, as is Kate Moss’, the official face of Burberry.
Britain makes flawed gems. TVR sports cars, Lotus sports and others. Very, very, nice but painfully flawed, made in limited numbers, unsupported by the idiot government and grossly over priced. (Not to mention dubious build quality!)
The Koreans (from my perspective, not traditional British) seem to produce products that look almost Japanese, using Japanese components but without the Japanese drive for quality products. They are, in my honest opinion, pale imitations of Japanese products. On the other hand, the British envy Japanese production ethics. The American achieved them, the British dream about them.
t appears despite that Ishikawa’s 7 laws of production were never fully endorsed by the British, but we do appreciate them.
On another note: The Queen, I’m quite sure, is used to doing things that are horrible, talking to Prince Phillip must rank reasonably highly.
Forgive me if, it appears the UK dislikes Korean products because they are Korean, this is not the case, as already mentioned East Asia is something of a blur to most Europeans, they just identify the companies with poorly manufactured goods. (Hyundai for example are noted for continuously changing the pronunciation of their company name, which results in the fact we (Europeans) can never actually pronounce it correctly, or perhaps we did but by then it had changed again and also chronically unreliable gearbox’s, Kia’s are simply famous for their fantastic firework displays, sadly on peoples drives, while the car burns unexpectedly.)
In terms of we, the British usually like, (usually quite vocally, as if in some way they were attempting to exude an air of forgiveness to the nations involved) prefer Japanese and German products and usually will cast an eye over American products. Manufacturers such as Sony, Mazda, Panasonic, Bosch, BMW, Mitsubishi, GM, Ford and many others, are held with the highest regard.
In terms of fashion and despite Ms Moss’ best efforts, the general consensus is ‘we know best’ (although many French and Italians will probably argue). The same applies to music, TV and literature, although that is usually nationalistic conjecture and a great deal of confusion surrounds American and British products in this particular area.
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=PAR20051006&articleId=1046 In the book, Gang of Five, author Nina Easton wrote that the Abramoff-Norquist leadership transformed the College Republicans into a “right-wing version of a communist cell – complete with purges of in-house dissenters and covert missions to destroy the enemy left.” Under Abramoff and Norquist, the College Republicans also allegedly began tapping into Rev. Moon’s mysterious well of nearly unlimited cash. In 1983, Rep. Jim Leach of Iowa, then chairman of the GOP’s moderate Ripon Society, released a study saying the College Republican National Committee “solicited and received” money from Moon’s Unification Church in 1981. Leach said the Korean-based Unification Church has “infiltrated the New Right and the party it wants to control, the Republican Party, and infiltrated the media as well.” Before Leach could finish the press conference, Norquist disrupted the meeting with accusations that Leach was lying. For its part, Moon’s Washington Times dismissed Leach’s charges as “flummeries” and mocked the Ripon Society as a “discredited and insignificant left-wing offshoot of the Republican Party.” To this day, largely through lavish spending on right-wing causes, Moon has made his cult-like movement a political powerhouse within conservative circles. However, evidence has continued to mount that Moon’s operation is a complex web of secretive businesses and groups that launder millions of dollars from suspicious sources in Asia and South America into the U.S. political system. Moon has subsidized not only media outlets, such as the pro-Republican Washington Times, but conservative infrastructure, including direct-mail operations, think tanks and political conferences. Moon’s organization also has funneled money directly into the pockets of former President Bush and other leading politicians. [For details, see Secrecy & Privilege .]

Although Japanese evil occupation ended Syngman Rhee was inaugurated as president of the first Republic after three years of American Military Government in South Korea. President Rhee imposed the Rhee line, replaced by the MacArthur Line, as a maritime demarcation line between Japan and Korea to conserve Korean fisheries. Japanese patrol boats sent to investigate were fired on by the Korean navy in August right after ROK forces occupied Dokdo which fell inside the Rhee line.

Anthony Browne asks why Britain became "the first country in the developed world to produce its own suicide bombers. " The answer is that Britain hates itself. Schools refuse to teach history that risks making pupils proud, and use it instead as a means of instilling liberal guilt. London's internationalism is the only thing Brits are licensed to be proud of -- in other words, a characteristic of which there is little British left about it.

Friday October 07, 2005 on Inside Edition Chance Murder She used to be a stripper in Phoenix. Now she's a witness for the prosecution. Wearing pink handcuffs and prison stripes for her role in the murder of a wealthy businessman, Inside Edition on Brandy Hungerford's(♀<丶`∀´>) testimony against her former boyfriend. http://www.insideedition.com/
Rick Chance owned a sleek Mercedes sedan, a speedy Porsche 911 Cabriolet and a $350,000 Rolls-Royce Corniche. The surveillance camera shows Brandi Lynn Hungerford looking relaxed, almost bored, as she and Rick Chance collect two plastic keycards to Room 317 of the Best Western Inn in Tempe. Her left arm is draped along the check-in counter. The time, detectives say, was 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8. In a few hours, Chance would be dead, as much as $1 million in gems and Rolex watches he was believed to be carrying would be missing, and Hungerford and a friend would be on the run. A hot date that Rick Chance had bragged about for days went horribly wrong. Sex changed Brandi Lynn Hungerford's life. South Korean by birth, Hungerford was adopted in July 1977 when she was only a few weeks old by a machine shop supervisor and his wife in Grand Rapids, Mich. She became the second eldest of eight brothers and sisters and grew up in solid middle-class Midwestern comfort. She took a few courses at a state college in Michigan, then moved with her parents to Tempe in 1995 and planned to enroll at Arizona State University. That never happened. Instead, she answered a newspaper advertisement that changed her life and led her to Rick Chance. The ad read simply: "Looking for Models." Hungerford was hired on the spot to work for an "in-call escort service." She was licensed as a personal escort in Maricopa County, using the trade names "Eden" and "Tiara." Her job was to ride with a bodyguard to a hotel room, slip into some sexy clothing, light a stick of incense and do a provocative dance while a client pleasured himself. The bodyguard stayed outside to make sure there was no trouble. http://www.azcentral.com/news/famous/articles/1210chance.html http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/classics/rick_chance/3.html http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=Brandi+Lynn+Hungerford&ie=UTF-8&filter=0
We need to find a middle way, and regain some of our cultural confidence. Being arrogant is definitely a character flaw, but self-loathing doesn’t make you good, it just makes you look weak and pathetic. A certain amount of self-confidence is a necessary precondition to achieve anything in life. That goes for nations as well as individuals. If you don’t respect yourself, then nobody else is going to respect you either. Those who do not have some pride in their own culture will sooner or later end up being proud of somebody else’s. Yes, Europe has a sometimes dark and violent history, but that is hardly unique to us. Yes, Europe was engaged in slavery, as have been most other cultures throughout human history. However, Europe also gave rise to the abolitionist movement, pushing to end slavery on an international basis, not the least in the Islamic world. Move on! Our culture is worth keeping, despite the incessant claims to the contrary from parts of our intelligentsia. Non-Europeans who visit our lands come to visit our great cathedrals, see our arts and enjoy some of the quaint little quirks and bad habits we have acquired over the centuries. If they want to see burkas and sharia they go to Baghdad or Karachi, not to Rome, Amsterdam or Dublin. Should Europe be reduced to an appendix of the Arab world, this would be a tragedy for world cultural heritage, not just for Europe.

The attacks are also being condemned by the city's mayor George Wood. He says the behaviour of those responsible is unacceptable, but doubts it is rife within the community. He has a good relationship with the Korean community and says he would have heard if these sorts of attacks were becoming commonplace.

More North Korean fishing boats seized in Russian waters VLADIVOSTOK, October 10 (RIA Novosti, Anatoli Ilyukhov) - Security officials in Russia's Far East expressed concern Monday over the growing number of illegal border crossings by fishing boats from North Korea, after another 232 North Korean fishermen were expelled from Russia's territorial waters off the Pacific Coast.

THE corporate watchdog has warned investors to avoid Asian share scams after an investor lost $70,000 on a bogus tip. Australians are being inundated with unsolicited e-mails which appear to emanate from Russia and contain share recommendations for stocks in countries ranging from Thailand to South Korea.

AXCP (Allixon International Corp) which is listed on the South Korean market, rose from a close of about $4.10 on Tuesday to nearly $5 by lunch time Thursday. Volumes were many times higher than on Tuesday and Monday.
But the Australian Securities and Investments Commission's Berna Collier said such tips were almost definitely bogus.

An ongoing embezzlement investigation involving pro-North Korean organizations in Japan has led to arrests of executives from Chongryon and the collapsed Chogin Tokyo credit union. The former is the abbreviated name of the powerful General Association of Korean Residents in Japan.
Chongryon's Tokyo headquarters, which are considered a de facto North Korean embassy, were searched by police for the first time ever on November 29th.
The search was protested by an angry mob of several hundred North Korean residents shouting slogans of "rascism" and "go home" (!).
An inbound Korean Airlines passenger was arrested on Guam early Sunday morning after he was allegedly found with more than four and a half pounds of crystal methamphetamine in his luggage.
Jin Young Oh arrived on Guam at 2:35 a.m. from Incheon, South Korea, according to court documents. He was arrested almost six hours later after officers allegedly found 14 bags of the drug commonly known as "ice" in Oh's baggage.
The total weight of the 14 bags and its contents is 2,078 grams. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, a gram of crystal methamphetamine could go for $100 to $500.
Oh also told officers he was recruited through an Internet chat room in South Korea and was offered $4,500 to deliver the box containing the speaker to someone on Guam.

It all seems rather harsh on New York's Korean population but they shouldn't take offence, the list of things you can buy and sell on the internet auction site seems to be getting smaller every day.

If you're looking for a gift that bespeaks elegance and taste, you might try Spam. The luncheon meat might be the subject of satire back home in the U.S., but in South Korea, it is positively classy. With $136 million in sales, South Korea is the largest market in the world for Spam outside the United States. But here, some consider the pink luncheon meat with its gelatinous shell too nice to buy for themselves, and 40% of the Spam is purchased as gifts.
In the postwar years, Spam was a special treat for South Koreans, who could rarely afford meat and didn't have refrigeration at home.
On 5 October, Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Shoichi Nakagawa urged economic sanctions against the DPRK (Democratic Republic of Korea; northern Korea) because of the Cold War kidnappings of Japanese citizens by DPRK agents. "If it helps solve the abduction issue, I believe [the sanctions] should be launched as soon as possible," Nakagawa reasoned.
Consider that Japanese imperialists invaded and militarily occupied the Korean peninsula from 1910-1945. During that occupation, the Japanese usurped Korean resources and attempted to crush Korean culture as Koreans were forced to take Japanese names, practice Shinto (the Japanese state religion), and communicate in Japanese. During World War II, tens-of-thousands of Korean women were forced to work as ianfu (comfort women) -- that is, sex slaves -- for the Japanese military. A total of 370,000 Koreans were pressed into Japanese military service. Also, as revealed by government documents, 667,680 Koreans were unwillingly shipped to Japan as slave labor. Some researchers, however, put this figure at 1.5 million kidnapped Koreans. [1] http://www.dissidentvoice.org/Oct05/Petersen1015.htm

A recent poll in Japan found 51% opposed to another Koizumi visit and 44% in favor. Skipping Yasukuni would not hurt him much domestically, while a visit would cost him and the country internationally. If Japan feels a need for a memorial to the war dead, it should build one that isn't associated with Shintoism, the official religion until the end of the war.

Not So Forgiving: The Reparations Argument Revisited By David Horowitz FrontPageMagazine.com | October 17, 2005 controversy over reparations for black slavery, in which opponents argue across a Grand Canyon of disagreement where no common ground seems possible is a case in point. A recent book by San Diego Law professor Roy L. Brooks -- Atonement and Forgiveness: A New Model for Black Reparations -- attempts to extricate the two sides from the impasse. His failure illustrates exactly how difficult the task is.
Why should tens of millions of black Americans who are already comfortably middle class receive monies based on their skin color that is taxed from Mexican, Korean and Arab Americans, let alone white Americans who had no part in slavery or discrimination, and who may be no better off or even worse – and to do so in the name of injustices committed 50 or a 150 years ago? What kind of reconciliation is this?

There is so much science to do that doesn't have to do with rocketry, that doesn't have to do with sending people into space, that doesn't have to do with spending billions on a boondoggle space program that is more concerned with keeping certain government vendors in the money rather than actually getting real science done.

During his news conference, Mr. Rumsfeld was pressed for a response to recent public opinion polls that indicate a sense among some South Koreans that the United States is a greater threat to peace on the peninsula than North Korea.
Mr. Rumsfeld took an uncharacteristically long pause, and then reminded his audience of the vibrancy of South Korea's democracy, economy and lifestyle -- and said they had been purchased, to a great extent, by American sacrifice of blood and money.

Thursday, October 20, 2005 Women were told they might get $800 a day, affidavit says By Ken Kobayashi Last week, a federal grand jury indicted Wan Yo Kang, also known as "Hannah," identified as the owner, on 11 felony charges of interstate promotion of prostitution, enticing women to travel here for prostitution activity and harboring two women, illegal aliens, at the business' suite.
On Sept. 7, about five days after their arrest, the nine appeared before a federal magistrate in their blue prison attire and accompanied by Korean language interpreters for one of several hearings on their status in the case.
Kang's business is one of an estimated 40 to 50 "relaxation parlors" — offshoots of massage parlors in the early 1990s — according to Honolulu Police Lt. Walter Ozeki. They are generally located between University and Ward avenues, he said.
Honolulu lawyer Pamela Tamashiro represented one of the other women who was released. Her client had planned to voluntarily go back to South Korea, she said.

Ko Don Chul, 45, illegally installed VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal) equipment at the Rose Garden Tower and two other rented houses to receive international telecom signals.
Hanoi police confiscated 101 cell phones and a large number of paid phone cards. The system made available 142 telephone lines to provide the service in late 2004.
Accordingly, all Vietnam inbound calls from other countries were transformed into domestic calls using local phone numbers, especially mobile phones.
In August this year, the network provided services for 112, 201 inbound calls which lasted a total of 355,748 minutes.
Chul installed antennas in other provinces, said investigators.
Chul, first arrived in Vietnam in 2002, and had officially worked as head of the rep office of Korean company Seabird TNC Corp. headquartered at the Rose Garden Tower since October of last year.
http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_3143058# 10/23/2005 The price of freedom 画像有り! A Denver police crackdown on prostitution reveals women held at Asian massage parlors until they repay debts for being smuggled into the U.S. Denver police raided 18 Asian massage parlors and arrested 35 people in the past six months in a massive effort to curtail prostitution. The arrests in what police say is a $20 million a year local industry have also led investigators to believe that the massage parlors are part of an international effort to traffic in women who often are forced into prostitution to pay off those who brought them into the country. The busts also have revealed stories of human trafficking from women in the massage parlors described by police as too frightened to cooperate. "We'll continue to be very aggressive in addressing this disturbing problem," said Dave Fisher, division chief of investigations. The problem, he said, is that the women are not willing to testify because those who control their lives in massage parlors have alleged ties to organized crime, such as the Korean mob. "They'll give us information on how it works, but when it comes down to convincing them to be involved in a prosecution case, it's tough," said Fleecs, noting that only five of the 16 women identified as workers agreed to talk, and only then in general terms. "They're afraid." The route from Korea to a Denver massage parlor is an elaborate one, according to Fleecs. Women are allegedly brought illegally into the U.S. from Korea and other countries by "brokers," men who are members of the mob. Once in the U.S., the brokers transfer the women's smuggling debts - ranging from $10,000 to $30,000 - to a massage parlor employer who holds their passports and other documents while the women live there and work seven days a week.
$450,000 grant to combat brothels Borodkin urges focus on human trafficking Armed with a $450,000 federal grant, police and state officials hope they will be able to curtail the growing presence of brothels disguised as massage parlors and spas in the Denver area and beyond.
State Rep. Alice Borodkin, D-Denver, joined Denver Police Chief Gerry Whitman at a news conference Sunday at a strip mall housing a now vacant "spa" to talk about a recent sting operation that led to 35 arrests of mostly Korean women on prostitution charges.
Borodkin said women working as prostitutes in these shady, organized-crime-run operations are often deprived of their passports and other forms of identification until they work off costs associated with smuggling them into the U.S. "This is a dark and dirty affront to human rights," Borodkin said. http://rockymountainnews.com/drmn/local/article/0,1299,DRMN_15_4181880,00.html
Submitted by Editor on Fri, 2005-10-21 09:21. Internet Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is quickly becoming on of the most comprehensive knowledge bases on the Internet. As of October 18, 2005 the Chinese government has started blocking the Wikipedia website in several provinces including Shanghai. This move comes at the heels of the government releasing a whitepaper which made it very clear that the Communist party's dictatorship was the only permissible option. The Chinese government is censoring Wikipedia the same way that it blocks access to tens of thousands of websites with information that does not toe the official party line.
The Chinese government already employs thousands of personnel who monitor online communities and websites, looking for offending information and often trying to entrap citizens who speak out. They recently set guidelines for news organizations and have also been requiring website owners and bloggers to register with the government. For the most part, the world community has largely been absent when it comes to expressing opposition against these draconian Chinese policies.
The US wants to change the focus of troop deployment in Japan, its most important Asian ally, to take account of changing threats in the region, including in North Korea and the Taiwan straits. The idea is to scale back the number of troops stationed in Japan, currently about 45,000, but to compensate by making regional forces more mobile and technologically equipped to deal with new threats, including from terrorism. Donald Rumsfeld, US defence secretary, expressed what is widely believed to be US frustration at what it regards as Japanese foot-dragging over negotiations by cancelling a planned visit to Japan last week. Even some senior Japanese officials are annoyed at what they see as Tokyo's lack of resolve in tackling the transformation issue, though there is no fundamental disagreement over Washington's strategic goals. One sticking point has been plans for the US Marine Corps' Futenma airbase on the southern island of Okinawa, where three-quarters of troops are stationed. Both sides agree that the base, which is close to a built-up area, has to be moved, but disagree on the relocation site. Washington has been frustrated at what it sees as Japanese backtracking over an initial agreement to build a new airport on reclaimed land, a plan that has come under criticism from environmentalists. Other points of disagreement include the possible redeployment of troops from Okinawa to Japan's main island of Honshu. Mr Burns said: "We see our alliance with Japan in this region as fundamentally important to US security. This is an enormously complicated issue, but one we have worked very hard on." Mr Burns also said Washington would continue to support Japan's bid to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. He said the US would work with Japan to come up with a comprise proposal less radical than Tokyo's original suggestion of expanding the Security Council to 25 members.

One man was killed and a police officer was injured in clashes in the Lozells area of Birmingham last night. The riot, between Asian and black youths, broke out after a public meeting was held about an alleged sex attack on a teenage girl. Tensions have been high in the area since the alleged attack took place several days ago. It is claimed the girl - an illegal immigrant - had been kidnapped and raped by three men.
The collision occurred about 7 p.m. Sunday on Alondra and Gard Avenue. The driver of a Honda Civic and the driver of an Acura RSX allegedly were racing westbound on Alondra when the woman driving a four-door, 多分20年前位のカムリ?→mid-size car made a left turn in the intersection, authorities said. Both cars, traveling an estimated 40 to 50 mph, struck the woman's car, which rolled over and sheared off a fire hydrant, said Sgt. Steven Paul of the Norwalk sheriff's station.
"In Cha Kim" died at a hospital before dawn, according to deputies at the Norwalk sheriff's station, who said seven other people remained hospitalized.
Investigators were trying to ascertain Monday whether the Honda and Acura drivers were racing against each other, an official said.
Eight people, ranging in age from 13 to 21, were packed into the Acura, he said, adding that there were not enough seat belts for all the passengers.
When we read this Kyodo news in Japanese language, the Financial Times seems to be blaming only the Japanese Prime Minister. I saw that Kyodo distorted your article to get the different effects. I think it is what should be most avoided as medium. From the beginning Kyodo has been pro-China. I'm afraid this distorted way of Kyodo will damage the confidence of your company.
Here I did translate the article of the Kyodo news into English. Please compare this with your original. --------------------------------------------------------------- A British paper published the editorial that Japan should talk with neighboring countries , about the issue of visits to Yasukuni Shrine. (24th London ,Kyodo)
British Financial Times on the 24th published the editorial that it was necessary to advance the conversation with neighboring countries if Japan wanted to be accepted as "normal nation" , referring to China and South Korea repulsing the Yasukuni Shrine visit of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
>708 つづき This newspaper emphasized that the Prime Minister Koizumi's visit had given "a perfect excuse" to the countries that had opposed against the Japan’s permanent member of U.N. Security Council while they criticized the reaction of China for the tension between nations. They indicated that the diplomatic results of the discourse of "keen reflection and a heartfelt apology " which Prime Minister Koizumi issued on the 60 years anniversary of the end of the war also got spoilt.

http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/news/local/12981980.htm Mahn Suh Park - Mayor Street's longtime friend and volunteer point person for Asian affairs - says that with the permission of the then-Traffic Court president judge he manufactured laminated, orange "Traffic Court Advisory Committee" cards that ended up in the hands of more than a dozen Korean immigrants. Korean businessman James Lee, of Cheltenham, said he paid $300 for a card, which bears the signature of former Traffic Court President Judge Frank "Duke" Little. Lee said other Koreans in Philadelphia told him they also had bought cards, paying $300 to $500. In an interview, Park denied that he had sold the cards and blamed a former associate. Lee said he and others who bought the cards believed that showing the card to law-enforcement authorities would help them avoid getting traffic tickets. He said he had not used the card, but said other card owners told him they had sucessfully used their cards to avoid tickets. A Korean businessman who lives in South Jersey said in an interview that Park offered to sell him a Traffic Court card, but he declined to buy it. The businessman said he didn't want to be identified in the newspaper. Park, who in the past called himself "the Korean mayor of Philadelphia," said he also created identification cards for members of Asian affairs advisory councils for the district attorney and the police commissioner. Both the D.A. and the police commissioner did have councils of Asian-Americans to advise them on cultural and political issues. Park has been Street's top adviser on Asian issues since Street became mayor. His PAC gave Street more than $53,000 in 1999. "He says that everything must go through him. If it doesn't go through him, the mayor doesn't show up," said Wutha Chin, head of the Cambodian Association. Park said he had done nothing wrong!

Hillary Clinton Bemoans "Historical Amnesia" in Korea A newly hawkish U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday chastised South Korea for what she claimed was a fog of “historical amnesia" clouding its relationship with Washington. She said the alliance was at a "critical juncture.” Sen. Clinton, tipped as a main Democrat contender in the 2008 presidential election, was speaking at a confirmation hearing for Gen. Burwell Bell, the commander-designate of the U.S. Forces Korea. Clinton said the U.S. role in bringing about South Korea’s remarkable economic success since the Korean War was significant, but lack of recognition of that view in Korea bordered on "historical amnesia."
She said changes in the dynamic between the two countries were largely due to South Koreans’ lack of “understanding of the importance of our position there and what we have done over so many decades to provide them the freedom that they have enjoyed to develop the economy that is now providing so many benefits for South Koreans," the senator said.
Anti-American sentiment has grown among South Koreans in recent years in parallel with a thawing of relations with communist North Korea. Some activists have recently called for the removal of a prominent statue of U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who in past decades was viewed by South Koreans as a hero for turning the tide in the 1950-53 Korean War.
According to newspaper polls, many South Koreans now view the U.S. as a greater threat to the nation’s security than the communist North.

This week's international prize for ingratitude goes — hands down — to South Korea's anti-American crowd. On Sept. 11, a date chosen to insult Americans, 4,000 demonstrators attacked the statue, calling MacArthur a "war criminal" and decrying the statue as a symbol of U.S.
Korean Ambassador to the United States Han Seung-joo for his failure to attend an event hosted by the U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, apparently giving preference to another meeting involving personal relations. Han did not go to the meeting held at Rumsfeld's residence in Washington, Sept.10, local time, where high-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Colin Powell and Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, were also present, instead attending a party celebrating the publication of a book by his wife, a professor at the Academy of Korean Studies. The dinner hosted by Rumsfeld was not for expressing gratitude to the countries that had sent troops to Iraq as initially reported by local media, but was to commemorate the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Yonhap news agency reported, quoting a U.S. Defense Ministry spokesman. It is likely that the meeting was meant to be both, as the guests were ambassadors from 25 countries such as Australia and Mongolia that had dispatched troops to Iraq. http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200409/kt2004091715211353460.htm
Asia's Space Race Three decades after the U.S. beat the Soviet Union to the moon, China and Japan have launched rival space odysseys of their own

Monday, Oct. 10, 2005 The second-ever manned Chinese space flight is slated to carry two astronauts on a five-day journey circling Earth, while they conduct experiments on pig sperm. But the flight's importance reaches far beyond any advances in animal husbandry that may result from exposing hog semen to weightlessness. It is the latest shot fired in a fiercely competitive space showdown between China and Japan.
China's secret jihad Posted by: Neil on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 03:35 PM Two new videos document efforts by militants to establish an indepdent Islamic state in China's western Xinjiang province.
The area was known as East Turkistan, before being annexed in 1949.
The new videos, posted on Arabic jihad websites, provide a rare insight into efforts to estalish a Taliban-style geurilla army inside China.
The footage shows groups training in desert camps and missile launchers being tested.
Some scenes show raids by police trying to curb the activities of insurgents there.
Chinese nationals arrested for smuggling, prostitution U.S. state and federal agents yesterday arrested five Chinese nationals in the South Bay for their alleged involvement in running an elaborate smuggling and prostitution ring, according to reports by the San Francisco Chronicle. The investigators stated that the five suspects operated from 10 massage parlors located in the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and San Mateo. The prostitutes, including Taiwanese, Chinese, and Korean nationals, were rotated every ten days to avoid detection, said the police. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/i_latestdetail.asp?id=32048

A planned east Asian summit in Kuala Lumpur this December might help forge a new spirit of cooperation. The confab is aimed at laying the groundwork for a new East Asian Community loosely modeled on the European Union. Japan has been pushing the idea of stronger Asian integration for years, and with security anxieties growing apace, the time might be ripe for a new regional alignment. It would be unfortunate if Tokyo's desire to shape that future were to be derailed by its inability to come to grips with its past.
inability to come to grips with its past.
