"loves" is actually correct. In that context, loves refers to loved persons, not the emotion.
If I had to find fault in >>35 it would be the usage of "try".
"smoking" and "drinking" are present continuous verb conjugations, while "try" is present simple.
The correct form in this statement would be "trying".
Also, saying "trying not to" instead of "trying to not" is a more common usage.
I'm presently trying to learn Japanese, so I understand how difficult it can be to master a language.
If we all work hard and help each other out, I think the world will be a better place eh?

> "smoking" and "drinking" are present continuous verb conjugations, while "try" is present simple.

Yes, I changed tenses. Doesn't seem incorrect to me, as that part of the sentence comes after an "and"
which leaves open the possibility of a new level of meaning in that sentence. Basically, the actions
of smoking, drinking, etc. are things I did right now when I wrote that sentence, while the attempt of
not thinking is more of a habit thing. It also is a state of mind of mine, one that doesn't really change.

I feel Americans often use the present continuous.
I learned at school that the state verbs cannot used
in continuous forms, but I often hear my American
friends say "I've been waiting for you".
I feel "wait" is not an action verb but a state verb.
There may be a difference in feeling what verbs are
state verbs and what verbs are action verbs.
But it's not so important for me.
If I pay attention to these grammatical matters
too much, I lose my interest in speaking English.

53名無しさん@英語勉強中:04/11/28 21:06:56

I'm from Canada. English is certainly a difficult language to master, largely
because of the way that it developed. With all the exceptions and homographs,
it's no wonder it's a big challenge to learn!
"Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present."
I'm finding Japanese is more straightforward, for the most part. But there is also kanji to tackle...

>>50
> Doesn't seem incorrect to me, as that part of the sentence comes after an "and"
> which leaves open the possibility of a new level of meaning in that sentence

Fair enough, but let us look at it piece by piece. At the start of your sentence, you have
a series of items seperated by commas. Because you started off with "I am", it
essentially imparts that understanding to each of the items. So:

I am smoking a cigarette, I am drinking ice tea, I am listening to WFMU and
and I AM try to not think about loves recently lost...

I believe the grammatical term is a "lack of parallel structure".
Also, you have two independant clauses, so it's best to seperate the two clauses,
as opposed to having one series.
To impart the meaning which you stated above, I think it should be:

I am smoking a cigarette, drinking ice tea, and listening to WFMU,
and I try to not think about loves recently lost, but rather the loves lost long ago.

Also, for greater impact, you could break that sentence up
into 2 sentences, dropping the second "and".

<sarcasm> Grammar is fun isn't it! </sarcasm>
Actually I find that with Japanese I always get mixed up with
particle usage, and that is often worth a good percentage of the
marks on the tests. So I can certainly identify with what 52 said!
And yes 53, "wait" is an action verb.
Hehe, I wonder if this is what teaching English in Japan is like, because that's something
that I'm considering doing for a year or two after I graduate from university.
Well, it's incredibly late now, or early. Almost 9am! I've probably become slightly incoherent so
it's time to sleep for me ^^

> I believe the grammatical term is a "lack of parallel structure".

I believe that is more of a term of formalistic and pointless pedantery.

> Because you started off with "I am", it
essentially imparts that understanding to each of the items.

Not really, since I did change the tense, signified by the "try".

> Also, you have two independant clauses,

independent

Concerning actions and states:
I think the differentiation is merely arbitrary,
states are more of an essential kind,
while actions are more of a contingent kind.

I don't think any particular verb refers to an essential
state or contingent process per se, though. The interpretation
is ultimately up to the individual utterance and the context
of common usage it appears in and thus changes depending
on the perspective.

I'd say that Godot, for instance, isn't waiting. He waits.

I'd say that the stereotype that Canadians are nicer is more true
than one would think.
>>65
Yes, you're right about the spelling, but hey, I'm entitled to the occasional typo here and there ^^
Well, in the context of your original statement, when you changed tenses a literal interpretation would
construe it as a command.
It would imply you were ordering people "try not to think about..."
Because you seem to have 2 clauses here, it's as if you have two
separate thoughts joined together by "and". Since you are the one doing the thinking,
you must re-specify "I" as the subject. Otherwise, either "I am" will be assumed
(which is incorrect), or a different meaning is thought than you originally intended.
>>60
Regarding actions vs states, that actually became a point of argument in an IRC channel I frequent.
The general consensus was that "to live" is an action verb. It's hard
to explain why, however, I think it has something to do with transitive vs intransitive usage
that produces different types of sentences as you described. Hope this helps to shed some light on
the situation. English IS quite confusing. When speaking I generally don't think about this sort of
thing, as it comes as naturally as Japanese does to you guys. That's quite fine, until you have to explain
it to someone! ^^; Actually, does anyone know of a Japanese-English learning forum or something? Personally,
I'd find that helpful for myself, and at the same time I could help others too!

As is often the case, good men cannot make a girl friend.
Because women are apt to like either very handsome men
or a little bad men. Some women loved even Takuma,
who killed a lot of innocent children. In 2-chan we can
see a thread where a lot of women admire or sympathize
with Takuma. Unbelievably a woman proposed to and
married Takuma when he was in a prison.
And she cried for Takuma when he was executed.

Sex, money, fame, and peace of no worth ended in a spoiled heaven.
The tiny monkeys would hate to perish, but they could not find the value of themselves.
Monkeys always want what others want, and robbed others of everything that they could find.
An earth is to be collapsed, a monkey is to be killed, and a law is to be violated.
So many negative principles are easily found, which implies the simplicity of the value.
However, the simplification may not be possible for monkeys, thus they imagine a kind of
abstract law declared by a sacred existence. It is always obscure, mysterious, and questionable.
Then, monkeys want to say "it depends" without thinking. Contrary, human beings can
imagine or find something that can not be defined arbitrarily. The thing might be extended
in space and time, then stand against the negative statements.
Things must be thought to be worth, after you graduate from kindergarten.

“I am the woman of the third-year student in a high school. I confessed to the day of Valentine last year.
He said to me"I do not know about you well. Therefore, I cannot reply."
In these days,he says to me "I do not dislike you.I have the favorable impression to you."and "Please wait

Although he liked his thing as the world changed, when I said honestly, I was tired from waiting for his reply.
I think it hard that he is seen have talked with other girls happily. But since I am not her of him, I can say nothing.
If the mail from him comes occasionally, I will also forget one hard to be glad then.
However, it is left by me again.....
In fact, I need to refuse to him.
If he will finish taking an examination supposing, as for me, it carries out or in the innermost recesses
of the heart, I think that I may be able to associate with him. However, if refused to him, I cannot regain
my footing any longer. Therefore, although it thinks that it will say from itself, "It is already good",

AndrewLB, please visit this thread more often.
I want to hear 外人の独り言(foreigners' monologue).
287AndrewLB:04/12/08 03:20:19
In Canada and America, we're free to study whatever language we want.
However, French is encouraged over here, which is bloody annoying. I
dunno, I'm not really a fan of French, myself, though all languages are
interesting in their own way.

But yeah, to be able to study Chinese and Japanese despite being someone
of Irish decent (i.e. Caucasian) freely is pretty cool. Mind you,
most people here only study English in middle school (possibly Spanish
and French too), and then French or Spanish in high school.
Our Middle school is only two years though, and our high school is four
years.
Then undergraduate college for four years (I'm in my first year at the University
of Toronto. It's like the Canadian version of Tokyo University, you could say),
and whatever after that. (be it master degree, Ph.D., or going to the work force.

I'm hoping to take a more advanced Japanese class next year (I'm not
currently studying Japanese, instead I've choosen to study Chinese),
while studying Mandarin at the same time. Good stuff, good stuff.

Do you know if Japan has good Linguistics programs? (That is, the study
of stuff like phonetics, semantics, phonology, morphology, etc.,
not just studying languages)
288名無しさん@英語勉強中:04/12/08 03:40:08
I think we have many, but I can't recommend any,
because I'm not a teacher who teaches Japanese.
But I think the best way to learn a foreign language is
,after all, to go to the country where the language is
spoken. If you want to improve your Japanese skills,
you should visit Japan and stay here for a while,
for example, during the summer vacation. Then you can
ask some Japanese teachers to recommend good Japanese
textbooks to you.
I'm going to go to a language school in the US during the
summer vacation next year. Because my English is too bad,
and I feel I cannot improve my poor English any more
if I don't go to an English-speaking country.
I'm very sleepy, now I'm gonna go to bed.

I found that text books, grammar books and courses are generally not a very good way to learn a language.
It's best to stick to actual examples of used language. For instance, I learned English mostly
through computer games, comic strips like Calvin & Hobbes (armed with only a dictionary. understanding the
gag of a strip is a big accomplishment) and TV (I loved to watch Jay Leno & Conan O'Brian).

That's pretty damn impressive, especially being able to understand
Calvin and Hobbes (considering there are a fair number of topical
jokes and gags). That'd be like a Westerner like me getting all the
gags in something like Doraemon or that new thing.. Yotsuba? Meh.
I forget the name of it.

Anyway, try watching Saturday Night Live, Simpsons, Family Guy and
South Park if you like American TV (It's damn good, so long as you
avoid the Reality Shows and Talk Shows). South Park is personally my
favorite, but there's plenty of other good ones.

No idea. A friend of mine posted this thread in an English chatroom,
seemed amusing. We laughed and mocked the poorly written English,
and then proceeded to write our own extremely poorly written Japanese.
The best of both worlds, eh? Seriously though, some of the English
phrases thought up by the Japanese are found to be EXTREMELY amusing
over here in Canada and the US. For example, ttp://engrish.com and
「もえたん:英単語集」. Your cartoons tend to be amusing too, but
American cartoons are better.

So the Japanese call Christmas break New Year's Vacation, eh? Don't
you have something called "Golden Week" around this time? I recall
my Japanese teacher in high school being extremely depressed when
she had to come to work during Golden Week.
317ed:04/12/09 02:07:39
Andrew, isn't Golden Week, like, in May?
And I thought they just called it 冬休み. Although I suppose that's just for people in school.
Working men probably only do get a few days off for New Year's.
And I'd wager that the majority of the people in here are a good bit older than the two of us, man.

And see? They don't think classes are a good way to go. So FUCK you, Andrew, and FUCK your
high school AND university Japanese courses! Manga education fo' life, yo!

Anyway. Graphics exam went okay. I'm going to work now. The black guy might bring the Xbox

over there, though.

Anyway, how the hell am I supposed to know when Golden Week is?
I took Japanese a while ago, can't really remember when she was all
depressed about it. Anyway, I don't really know anything about Japan,
they're just another, albeit really bizarre, country. Their language
is interesting as hell though.

Anyway, get on IRC in a bit, tell me if you have the Xbox. I might

I know all of those shows, some I watch dubbed on my TV (it's funny when you get to the point
where you can tell when translators have done a mistake), some I download from the internet
and watch on my PC. But TV shows didn't actually improve my actual understanding of English as
much as comics and other written stuff did (currently I am reading Moby Dick, again armed
with a dictionary), but helped me more in preparing myself for actual conversation with native
speakers - which is almost the last step in "growing into" a foreign language. The last step
would be talking with native speakers in their own country, in their linguistic context.
At least that is how it is in my understanding.

Sex is very important. Even if you repress sexual desires,
it will cause another problem. So it's important to satisfy
your sexual drives. For this making sex is important.
But you cannot make sex if you cannot make a girlfriend
(or a boyfriend). I thought about these things, and have
found that masturbation is a wonderful art, which makes
us equal. Well, I'll study again after killing time for a
while.

It would be true to say that studying English watching
DVDs is quite useful. But it needs a lot of energy and
patience. I think there are very few who can continue
to study English in this way. The idealistic learning
method is not always good for everyone. After all
we have to find the way of studying that we can
continue, even if it's not scientifically the best way.
I just want to pace myself. It matters a lot whether
I feel comfortable doing it or not.
336ed:04/12/09 23:37:59
>>324

It's okay, we laugh at your English all the time. But then again, there are more funny
Japanese people who write bad English than there are funny gaijin who write funny
Japanese. Which also makes us stand out even more. Damn.

Maybe we should make a "アホ外人が日本語を書くスレ" or something. :p

>>328

Wow, you're, like, a Japanese version of me, or something. I learned most of my
Japanese by doing the same things you do, except in reverse. Shounen manga with
furigana is a wonderful learning tool.

I don't know how it is with English-to-Japanese dubs, but most Japanese-to-English
dubs change the content of the script:
a) for content (censoring),
b) to make the mouth movement more closely match the spoken lines, and
c) to change cultural jokes the target audience may not understand to something else.

Of course, we also don't have anything close to the size of the Japanese seiyuu
industry, so generally speaking the voice acting sucks, too.

Sometimes the subtitle tracks are closer to the original dialogue for Japanese-to-English
translations. Have you ever tried listening to a dubbed movie or TV show while leaving
the subtitles on? Especially when it comes to American releases of Japanese anime,
sometimes you will find the original unedited translation on the subtitle track. When
the subtitle track is just a striaght transcription of the dialogue in the dub, we
call them "dubtitles".

A 2ch IRC network... Hah.
I'm guessing they ban foreign IPs. Bah, my Japanese isn't good enough
to hold a real time text conversation anyway. I can barely get away
with spoken conversatiosn, but written conversations would have
kanji in them, and despite my learning Chinese, my skill in Japanese
kanji hasn't improved all that much.

Though I'm guessing not everyone is "NaNashi" on IRC, right?

What about things like MSN, AIM, ICQ, etc? I know MSN has a Japanese
version (and is at least used, if not popular), but what about the
other ones?

To be honest, I couldn't care less about Japanese culture,
European/Western history and culture is more interesting, and more
fulfilling for me. Language wise though, Japanese is a damn interesting
language for study and research. After all, I'm studying linguistics,
and from an academic perspective, Japanese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese,
Cantonese, etc. are all quite interesting. Especially, for me, the
writing system the Japanese took from the Chinese. Looking at how
the Japanese simplified the writing system, for example, and how the
Chinese simplified it. Studying the history, studying the writing,
researching the grammar, trying to work backwards and figure out if
Japanese and Chinese sounded the same as they do now (They don't,
trust me), that kind of thing.

That you, Elepsis? :p

I'm a lot more honest about my reasons for learning Japanese. I want to play Japanese
video games and read Japanese manga. None of that "I love the language and nothing else"
bullshit Andrew likes to delude himself with.

>>356
Well, you see, Andrew took Japanese classes while he was in high school. The Japanese
classes offered in Canada are honestly not that good in general, though, and most
students who take those courses but are not very serious about it will come out in the
end knowing all the hiragana and katakana... and not much else apart from that. At
least that's what I've heard, anyway. Go ask Andrew about them if you want, since I've
never taken them.

As for me, I had too much time on my hands eight months ago and picked up some shounen
manga in one hand (いちご100%) and a Japanese-to-English dictionary (Kodansha's
ふりがな和英辞典) in the other. Oh, and a kana chart laying on the
desk in front of me... and just sort of took it from there. Before I started at that
point, I could read about 5-8 hiragana. And no, I'm not making this up.

What can I say, it's been an interesting 8 months.

I will now return to the English-to-Japanese translation thread to write some more
poorly-written Japanese!

Anyway, I'm not deluding myself, really.
And yeah, the Japanese classes over here are bloody awful. You
Japanese have your "otaku," we have our own breed over here, except
they tend to be very large, very ugly white women. Anyway, it's mostly
people like that who take Japanese classes in the United States and
Canada.

And Ed, I know that it wasn't a dictionary in your other hand when
you were reading Ichigo 100% (or as I'm coming to know it,草苺100%).

>>359
NEET? What the hell is NEET? Anyway, I don't know about Japan, but
it's not that difficult to get women over here, ESPECIALLY if you

themselves up to be like Valley Girls (日本語で「ギャル子」。。。たぶん),
or worse, beach whores (Kinda like your Ganguro girls or

Oden is Japanese hotchpotch boiled in kelp-based broth

Five Asia University students were arrested because they molested
a woman on the JR Chuo Line train. All of them are members of
the university baseball team. A lot of college students in Japan
lack a sense of morality today. Because they have been
brought up so indulgently that they can't control themselves well.
In addition Japanese young girls like wearing a short skirt.
They are like whores. It seems that they are always giving men
the come-on.
So it's very hard for men to fight against temptation.
Personally I love looking at girls who wear a short skirt. Oy my!
But when it comes to marriage, I prefer a modest and reserved
woman.
Modesty is a virtue Japanese should value more today.

It just makes it difficult to hold a conversation, since you don't
know who anyone is. So if, for example, one person called himself
"Tarou" and the other called himself "Tato," and yet another called
himself "David," then things would get marginally less confusing.

But then, I'm more accustom to English forums, where you have to
register as a specific person, and you always post under that name.

Copypasting this from shii.org

# Registration keeps out good posters. Imagine someone with an involving job related to your forum
comes across it. This person is an expert in her field, and therefore would be a great source of
knowledge for your forum; but if a registration, complete with e-mail and password, is necessary
before posting, she might just give up on posting and do something more important.
People with lives will tend to ignore forums with a registration process.

# Registration lets in bad posters. On the other hand, people with no lives will thrive on
your forum. Children and Internet addicts tend to have free time to go register an account
and check their e-mail for the confirmation message. They will generally make your forum
a waste of bandwidth.

# Registration attracts trolls. If someone is interested in destroying a forum, a registration
process only adds to the excitement of a challenge. One might argue that a lack of registration
will just let "anyone" post, but in reality anyone can post on old-type forum software;
registration is merely a useless hassle.
399Anonymous:04/12/11 03:44:36
(continued)
# Old-type software wastes bandwidth and removes the focus from content.
On old-type forum software such as vBulletin, you have to click through multiple displays
-- first the forum front page, then the link to the thread itself-- before you can read
the content of a thread. This focus on hierarchy hides the actual posts behind their titles,
and therefore promotes idle browsing rather than in-depth reading. On 2ch,
the first post and the latest replies are presented to you directly on the front page,
and the forums are divided up on a sidebar, submerging you directly in the forum
without having to click through all these levels. Old-type software, of course, also
wastes precious bandwidth with hundreds of tables and useless directory pages.

# Anonymity is a virtue. On the Internet, privacy concerns are always on the reader's mind.
Why make your users worry? Let them be as anonymous as they want.

# Anonymity counters vanity. On a forum where registration is required, or
even where people give themselves names, a clique is developed of the elite users,
and posts deal as much with who you are as what you are posting.
On an anonymous forum, if you can't tell who posts what, logic will overrule vanity.

# Most old-type software, such as vBulletin and Invision, costs money to use.
That kind of sucks.

All good arguments, but yeah, identity on forums is sort of what I'm
used to. Maybe some kind of unique identifier that's simply a string
derived from the user's IP address? Maybe?
Well, no, since this forum is open source, that wouldn't really hide
identity too well, plus there are only so many ISPs in Japan, I'm
sure, so...
Bah!

Some boards on 2ch have those. Some don't. The strings are
crypted, so they cannot be easily reverse-engineered, the
open source argument is kinda invalid in that regard.

Surprisingly enough you understand Japanese way of thinking
very well. Westerners are in general showy and very assertive,
they like to make others know their name. But Japanese like
being anonymous because they are reserved.??
In a Japanese society, what they say are often different from
what they actually think.
They often have to say what they don't mean depending on the
situations.
Anonymity make it easy for them to speak from their heart.
404AndrewLB:04/12/11 04:25:18
Hmm, I generally just say what I think. Unless of course it would be
bad for me to do so. I mean, sometimes if you, for example, tell off
you boss, you get fired, even if the guy is being an idiot. So, if you
want to keep your job, you just be quiet and agree. But mostly, I think
Westerners like to say what we think, let our opinions be known, and
we like to keep things in the open and honest.
But I guess honesty and being open is an asset in Western society.
I'm not saying the Japanese aren't honest, but I think the reserved
nature of the Japanese often puts Westerners off. Of course, we've
different cultures and different ways of thinking, so it can't
be helped, eh?

> Westerners are in general showy and very assertive,

> But Japanese like being anonymous because they are reserved.??

What an interesting thing to say because I know that when meeting in public
and officially, Japanese people usually give their business cards to each other.
This is not that common in the western world.

But I do think that Japanese people tend to have some sort of generally
accepted set of morals that force the individual to act polite and
always show the "appropriate" respect to each other.

Naturally, I think, while being good for a society in order to
be peaceful, it also creates a lot of anxiety, pent-up emotions and
such stuff. So, apart from 2ch being a great source of information
and communication, it also has this very important function of
serving as an outlet for people to be "themselves" (being yourself
understood as expressing what you feel & think).

In the west, it is more common to be "yourself" in public.
Westerners also have worse manners and are generally less polite
than Japanese people. Perhaps these two issues are linked closely.

Everybody seems to be bored here. If so, please listen to my sad story,
and give me some advice. A medical student seems to be here. Your advice
would be highly appreciated. By the way I'm divorced now.
My problem is that one day I got into my daughter's room to say
"Good night" after coming from work, but she was already fast asleep.
In her deep slumber, her blanket sort of moved away and exposed her
lower body clad only in her G-string bikini panties.
Before I could reach the blanket she moved and
her crotch was opened exposing bits of her pubic hair.
Sorry to say this, but I couldn't help getting horny just looking at it.
I didn't know what came over me, but I just couldn't resist masturbating
myself just watching her in that position. After jerking off
I slowly covered her body with the blanket.
Now it has been a week passed and I still haven't recovered from the incident.
Now I get horny just looking at my daughter's photo that I carry with
me everywhere I go.
What should I do?

In Japanese, "a cherry" means a person who is still a virgin.
In English, "cherry" refers to the female hymen or the state "virginity", but not the person.

It's funny how both languages use this kind of fruit
to refer to something that has had not any kind
of sexual experience.

I'm American (albeit living in Canada). Never heard such a phrase.

>>533
Er, not really. It might in latin (though I think it's a preposition
that means "with"), but even then, it'd be pronounced [kuːm], where
as the "cum" you're thinking of is pronounced [kʌm]. Two completely
different words (and, for that matter, languages).

What has caused the deterioration of morale?
I think it mainly comes from family problems.
The bad relationships between husband and wife
have had bad influence on their children.
If their parents get divorced, it' no wonder the
children can never believe in love or trust anyone.
After all it leads to the deterioration of public morals.
Considering those matters, the good relationships
between husband and wife are the most important
to make a better society. But for this, man's good
sex technique is also important. We shouldn't
sprinkle with only fine phrases. We have to
to satisfy not only our mental desire but also our
physical urge.

make you ill though. Hell, have you been following the news about the
Ukranian election? One of the canadidates had REALLY bad facial scaring,

fact that it was blamed kinda tells you something...

With Sofia Coppola's Lost in Translation,
Johansson's touching performance as a young girl
who strikes a tentative friendship with a washed up
American actor (memorably portrayed by Bill Murray)
while staying in Japan left no doubts regarding her
dramatic skills in the eyes of many, and the rising
starlet was soon cast in the lead of such subsequent
films as The Girl with the Pearl Earring (2003) and
The Perfect Score (2004).

On this English message board, so many different types
of people have come to post messages. It would be quite
meaningful for even some foreigners to keep posting
interesting messages.
Some abusers sometimes try to attack them, but they are
not so foolish that they could enjoy it. Only good words
make us very bored.
By reading their messages I've found that westerns
tend to think everything very logically.

Frustration or boredom is surely a major concern with most of us,
if not all.
Things not happening according to our own expectations,
towards our own personal leanings, inclinations and satisfaction
seem to be the major factors behind all this.
In short, frustration and boredom are in the denial of fulfillment
of our heart-felt desires
If there is no sense of a single denial, there is no frustration,
or boredom.
But is it possible to live a life without ever getting a single feeling
that one is "denied" of something? Anyhow it's hard to express some ideas
in a foreign language.

I'm stuck in a rut, but I cannot get out
of it for many reasons. Mr. S seems to
be nice, but in fact, he is very cold, lacks
something important.
He is only a high school graduate,
for which he may feel an inferiority complex.
The guys who have a sense of inferiority
tend to make me very tired. Because they
try to make a desperate effort so that they won't be
looked down upon by others. But for that I feel that
they suffer from inferiority feelings. Just be yourself,
otherwise, Mr. S, you are a kind, nice person.

I jerked off looking at the video of Komori Miyuki.
But my question is that why we get tired of looking at the same
photo or video when we jerk off.
It is only twice or at most three times that I can masturbate
watching the same video, even if the actress is very pretty, and
my type. But interestingly enough as far as sex is concerned,
I prefer the same girl. I don't want to leave my present girl friend.
But I sometimes enjoy jerking off even if I have a girl freind and
make sex with her about once a week.
Is there anyone who can masturbate watching the same video all
the year round?

Physical satisfaction is different from mental satisfaction.
To fulfil physical needs, newness, change, difference or
violence is important. For instance we don't want to eat
same dishes every day, because eating is to satisfy our
physical needs, so we want to have different dishes.
But as far as mental satisfaction is concerned, stability,
sameness, rest or peace is important..
For instance when we want to feel relaxed, we tend to
go to the familiar place. Everybody has his or her own favorite
place to relax, such as his/her own room, a nice restaurant,
a karaoke house, a nice pub and so on.
It may be true of your girl friend. If you want only physical
satisfaction from your girlfriend, you will be tempted to get a
new girlfriend sooner or later. But if you want mental satisfaction
from your girlfriend, you will have or want to have a long
relationship with her. As for me, I want both.

Do you guys know about "between the lions", a TV program
in which some lion pupets teach you English.
According to its official web site, the program is aimed at
from 4-to-7-year-old children, (of course they're
native speakers, though) but I'm sure it helps us
learn the language very much.
The lions helps us boost our vocabulary power as in today lesson
entice, scrumptious, vile, wicked and what not.
In my opinion, most of the Japanese people don't know
these words except for intermediate or advanced learners of English
in Japan. That led me to think we have to learn English
from scratch like children do, including vocabulary.

I hope the program will get popular among 2ch'ers.
And we could talk about it!

Her finger technique is excellent. I feel as if I were in heaven..
Her sex or fellatio is not so marvelous. There must be
many other girls that can give me more sexual pleasure than
she. But when it comes to finger technique, I've never met such
a girl, including professional girls, as gives me so much
pleasure. She is a very serious girl, and was virgin before
she began to go out with me. So she has naturally learned her

How many more years do I have to study English? It seems
impossible to understand 100% of English movies, which
makes me feel very frustrated. I think listening is the most
difficult part about learning English. Of course, writing
English is very difficult.
I can never have confidence in my written English . Maybe natives
feel that my English is very strange. But anyhow I can consult
a dictionary when I write, but when I watch English movies, I
have no time to look up the words in a dictionary I don't know.
What is worse, it's very difficult to distinguish the words spoken
by native speakers. So I can't even catch many words. It would be
absolutely impossible to completely master two languages.
It may come from our brain system.
So I have to be satisfied with writing poor English on this jokey
message board. But is there anyone that feels he/she has mastered
a foreign language completely.

The relationship between man and woman is very incomprehensible.
Most women try to get away from the man when they feel love from the
man. And they try to judge the man. In a sense they want to make sure
that his love is true or not. They often talk with other men in front of him,
so that the man feels jealous, and tries to get closer to her.
Many women enjoy this kind of process.
But there are many types of women. It was not true of K.
K was so straight and has directly accepted my love. She was not
like an actress. That's the point where I really like her.

how to kill time. For me it's to read 2-chan and write

K1 is getting less and less interesting. Why? K1 has
been boring since Musashi began to remain in the final.
As a Japanese I should be glad that Musashi remains in
the final. Why is it not interesting?
Maybe many people haunt doubts about the judges.
Many people thought that if the judges had been non-
Japanese, Ray would have won the bout with Musashi.
And Host would have won the bout with Bon if the
judges had been non-Japanese. Now K1 seems to be
controlled by TV companies and Tanigawa so that
they can get a higher viewer rating.
But for this, real fans for martial arts are getting away
from K1. Now for me, Pride is more interesting than
K1. But Pride also will go in the same direction as K1.
After all the high viewer rating is the most important
for the sponsors of TV programs. Nobody can deny it.

I wonder why some people can believe in one religious
group such as Christianity, Moslem, Jewish and so on
so strongly.
Especially why can Islamic fundamentalists have such a
strong faith? I feel there is something in common
between Aum Shinrikyou believers and Islamic
fundamentalists.
One common point is that they can, without hesitation,
kill people for their faith. There being many religions
means there being many gods.
Whose god is the strongest? Is it really worth thinking
of?
It is very difficult to distinguish faith and ideology or
brain washing.

Interestingly enough some persons are allergic to native
speakers. If natives speakers post some messages, they
get angry, and try to attack the persons.
I wonder whether they really want to study English,
and what they come to English threads for.
It is they that are of no value in English threads.
What are the depths of their consciousness?
They must be traumatized by natives, because
they feel so tense that they can't talk with native
English speakers. Actually I know such persons in
my office. They have the pre-first grade of English

vulnerability we are forced to accept.
Now there is nothing that catches my interest.
I loved a woman once, but love turned to banality sooner

the end, so I can't bring myself to love a woman.
But I hate nihilism.

Many people can't make harmonious relationships today.
It is quite noticeable in love between men and women.
A lot of men and women have failed to build up good

Japanese are too simple. So they are quick to be cheated
by commercialism. For instance chocolate companies sell

why Japanese are easily taken advantage of by

Today it’s the first day for the winter vacation.
I feel a lot relaxed. I’ll write something in English
in order to kill time.
Many high school teachers can’t motivate the students
to study English. They teach only shit English, using
traditional 'grammar-translation' methods.
It seems to me that quite a few English teachers in
public high schools are wasting our tax, and what is
worse, they screw up their students’ possibility.
They are very good at pointing out students’
grammatical mistakes. It can be discouraging for
us. I think we need more teachers who can encourage
students.
Considering the current soial trend, it seems better
for English teachers to have skills good enough to
pass the 1st level of English Proficiency Test(Eiken).
I’m a high school student, and like Enligh very much,
But I can’t bring myself to study English at school.
Can the government offer us various classes with
different learning styles?
Physical response approach that requires students’
creativity would be much more interesting.

Why do we depend? Even if we say that we don't
depend on anyone, we depend on a belief, on a

And we ask another for a mode of conduct; we seek
teachers who will give us a way of life which will
lead us to some hope, some happiness.
So we are always searching for some kind of
dependence, security.

It's like that mostly everywhere in Japan.
In my school, English teachers were awful and nobody but a few liked English. I hated it as well.
My main reason is they didn't let us use electronic dictionary and forced us to use papery dictionary. That was a total waste of time.

I guess your teachers aren't good but I don't understand one thing.
Why is it bad to point out student's grammatical mistakes?
Grammer is one of the most important thing for us, especially for those who are going going to university.
Grammatical error causes a impression that you are uneducated and unintelligent, and may cause a awful misunderstanding of what you say/write.
Do you think it is ok to make lots of mistakes only because some uneducated people in US tend to make grammatical errors?
Hell, no unless what you wanna do is only English conversation with a broken English and never discuss anything intelligent or formal.

I wish high-school teachers could encourage us to learn English but I think it's pointless to criticize them teaching grammer in detail.

It is unfortunate that people as motivated as yourselves can not learn English to the level you desire.

There are many problems that must be solved before you will get a quality education in English in Japan. Everyone is to blame and points fingers but do nothing to change.
+ Hire more native speakers. (JET or others) Have them do *actual dynamic* teaching. If they read the same book a Japanese teacher would read, then it is pointless.
---+ Also, do not discriminate if the teacher isn't white and American. Any person can do the job just as well if not better than your typical dumb blonde American with blue eyes. Even "nikkeijin" who cannot speak one word Japanese.

+ Dynamic teaching involves both understanding and *participation* from the teacher(s) and the students. Games can be very educational (like english shiritori)
---+ Dynamic also means that you can not follow the class seating, or student list to choose the next player. Following a fixed order makes students ignore over half of the lesson by not listening and only waiting until the person before has their turn.

Good luck learning a new language. Mistakes are OK as long as you learn from them.

I think old traditional 'grammar-translation' method
is the only effective one for many students in low
level high schools.
Conversational method would be only practicable for
high level schools and English conversation schools,
where the students are well motivated to learn.
In our school, the classes organized by a native
speaker of English are most chaotic.
The native speaker, who is American, cannot cope
with the classroom chaos. Students cannot
understand his English and his Japanese is not
good enough to calm down the students.
Many students in lower-level schools are like
kindergartners or brutal animals.
In other words, it is only when have only good,
well-motivated students that we can give ideal
classes. For that I really feel sorry for a few
students who are eager to learn English even if
they are in a low level school. They are the victims
of stupid students. Foolish students shouldn't take
English classes. It's better for them to work outside
of school.
I think many teachers who are teaching in a low
level school can understand this very well.

I doubt conversational methods work well even in upper-level schools,
except in rare cases.
Such methods only function with not more than a dozen students
and with a large amount of time spent exposing students
to English-speaking environment.
Besides, what high school teaches depends very much upon university entrance exams,
which currently requires of students little conversatoinal skills.

So realistically high schools, lower-level or not, have no other choice
but to offer teaching with emphasis on grammar.
