Thank you for your reply. I thought I was ignored.

I was really impressed by the fact that you teach yourself English
and have reached to the point where you can communicate and sometimes
argue here in this message board.

I feel studying English is a kind of burden. I have to admit it's not
for fun to me. Actually, I can't believe learning a foreign language can
be just for fun.

Anyway, thanks again for your reply.

Er, I think maybe you should replace 'English' with 'Japanese'
in that sentence. ^^;;

> I feel studying English is a kind of burden. I have to admit
> it's not for fun to me. Actually, I can't believe learning a
> foreign language can be just for fun.

Sure it can. It's fun learning, and I'm learning /because/
it's fun. Somebody said on this board that the key to
learning isn't what language school you go to or what books
you use but that every day you _STUDY_. I think that better
than that is to _want_ to study.

Sure, I'm far from the most organised or efficient 'learner'
but if I hadn't liked learning Japanese I would have given up
loooong, long ago.

From my experience of more than a decade of studying English,
I think studying a foreign language isn't just about having fun.

I have to crap a whip on myself and force myself keep studying it.
I don't use Enlish at work. If you are in a situation where your
company encourage you to study Enlish and give you some benefits, promotion
or something like that, that must motivate you. I wish I were in
a situation like that. I have no specific goals of studying it. That's why
I can't feel any sense of accomplishment. I can't afford to enjoy
the process of learning English. When I think of the time and energy
I have spent on studying English, the idea of quitting studying
English makes me feel anxious. Sounds like I am whining and complaing.
If you feel bad reading this, that's not my intention.

You don't seem to be studying Japanese for those benefits from your
company or anything. That's unbelievable to me. I don't like to say someone is
talented or gifted, because that sometimes can lead to an excuses
for not doing your best. But you seem to have some talents in
acquiring a foreign language.

Lots of people overseas are interested in Japanese animation, but
little of them don't start to study Japanese.

Well, rereading the message I wrote above, What point I try to make
of isn't too clear. Just forget it. haha.

Yes, I thought of that, but I was't really sure about the
difference between Brit and Briton, so I rather nonchalantly
threw the word there, feeling someone would comment on the usage.
I thought, maybe Briton is not a colloquial word, as often used in
the news media. How would you describe the difference?

> You don't seem to be studying Japanese for those benefits from your

Nope. No real need for Japanese at work.

I would like to get good enough to do J->E translation at some
point though. That's partially why I like English@2ch - for
the practise.

Actually when I was in school and was /made/ to study French it was
my worst subject. Of course I dropped it as soon as possible because
I hated it.

Briton is often used in the news media?

>Yes, I thought of that, but I was't really sure about the
>difference between Brit and Briton, so I rather nonchalantly
>threw the word there, feeling someone would comment on the

Well you were right.

>How would you describe the difference?
Well frankly I'd use a dictionary before commenting on what
'Briton' means. My first guess would be
a) Somebody who lives in Brittany
b) A historical term like Pict, and Angle (that's where Anglo-
saxon comes from - not the one used in geometry).

So, lets see what we get ...

ttp://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=briton
adj : characteristic of or associated with the Britons;
"the Briton inhabitants of England" [syn: Briton] n 1: a
native or inhabitant of Great Britain [syn: Britisher,
Briton, Brit] 2: an inhabitant of southern Britain prior
to the Anglo-saxon invasions [syn: Briton]

... however it appears that although Brittany was at one point
settled by the Britons they are probably called Bretons
nowadays.

So to sum up I've only heard 'Briton' in the historical sense.

>Briton is often used in the news media?

How bizarre. Aren't you living in the UK? Haven't you ever read
newspapers or watched news programmes?

For instance, "britons" in the bbc.co.uk site, by google

Yes it is. My guess would be they decided 'Brit' was too
slangy for news.

Very rarely. New Scientist I read every week -
but it appears they respect the English language more than
BBC News do.
