Labor calls for whaling talks at APEC
The Federal Opposition wants Japanese whaling to be discussed at the first trilateral
summit between Australia, Japan and the United States.
Yesterday Prime Minister John Howard announced he would hold an informal breakfast
with US President George W Bush and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during the
Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
Opposition defence spokesman Robert McClelland says it is an opportunity to discuss
the sensitive subject.
"It's probably convenient, with the leaders of those three countries in Australia,
for there to be such a meeting," he said.
"It's something that the Australian Labor Party would support - a number of security
issues, a number of economic issues, indeed we'd like to see Australia raise the
issue of Japanese whaling."
