Okay this is the important information you should know about this, as it is the exact same internship I went on and I could probably put a good word in about you to up your chances. You're probably a shoe-in honestly, because not as many people apply for this as you might think. When I was applying there was only one other applicant, and he was straight out of the running because we personally had met the director the previous year at Senshu.
However there are some ups and downs you should be aware of before you make the decision. First of all, the biggest reason that I'm still in college after six years is the delays caused by this internship. It's a great deal financially and the school is amazing and your responsibilities are very small and you'll have a ridiculous amount of time to explore Tokyo and do whatever you want. You can also join any clubs you want to at the school for the three months you're there, but some of them are harder to get into than others. The downside is, this internship is not very well organized. This may have changed now, but they guy who went right before us was a good friend of mine, and he was delayed almost two months in going because of problems in sending the visa. Me and Nick, (I went with a good friend of mine, which is really IDEAL for this) seeing these problems tried hard to avoid this delay. However, the director is terrible at responding to emails, and we ended up being delayed an ENTIRE SEMESTER of school (which was sorta cool because we really just dicked around and played video games, but our parents were ultra pissed). The amazing incompetence of the people sending your visas and giving you all the information (which they likely won't half the time) is the biggest deterrent in this otherwise awesome internship. My advice is to not underestimate anything, and send a ridiculous amount of emails if you think for a second that you're not in the know about something. (not like we didn't get compensation for the delay, however. We got to stay almost 6 months instead of the normal 3).
The other downside is: They discourage speaking in Japanese to the students at school. This is annoying because those kids are basically the bulk of acquaintances you will make over the course of the trip. John Sypal is fun if you love photography and playing DS, but if you actually want to speak Japanese you're going to have to make friends outside the school (which is a pain in the ass for people like me who stay inside too much).
Upsides: Those apartments are awesome, and odds are you'll be staying in the exact same one I did. It has a loft with a futon, you can drag the TV up there to a little cubby hole, watch anime and other Japanese TV and play games all day. It's awesome. Also, I'll tell you more if you end up actually going, but just being in Matsudo is just fun as hell. I got a little lonely and frustrated, but I never, ever for even a second wanted to come home. There are arcades EVERYWHERE and all of them have Pop'n Music and purikura. Ramen is delicious, everyone is super nice. If you can make it there and manage to put up with the disorganization and slight racism of being treated like a something of a cult object, I really really advise you to do it. This and Senshu were the greatest fun I've ever had in my life.

February: had a conference in Garmisch, Germany. Took leave and went to Rome with the family. We took the train from Munich all the way down to Rome. The train ride was beautiful. We were all over Rome hitting all of the famous spots to include the Coluseum, the Vatican along with the Sistin Chapel and we even took a trip over to Mount Vesuvias and Pompeii. We were there for about a week and then took the train back to Austria. We went to Salzburg, Austria where Mozart was born. We went into Germany and went to an underground salt mine, we were 600 meters (1960.5 feet) below ground!!!. Almost right above us was Hitler's Eagle's Nest and where his summer home was. We were there for about a week, it was one of the most beautiful little towns we've seen in Europe. Then my conference was in Garmisch which ia at the base of the tallest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. We took a cable car up two thousand meters to the top at 2964 meters or 9720 feet above sea level! We were there for about a week in Garmisch.

We then went back to Conakry, Guinea in West Africa. I only had three weeks left there when we returned. I also had my boss come down for an inspection during that time. So I basically had two weeks time to pack and move out of Africa. We barely made it, but we completed everything that had to be done.
We went on a 10 day cruise around Italy. We left out of Venice, stopped in a coastal town of Italy, and then over to Greece where we stopped in Corfu and Athens. We then went to Izmir, Turkey and it was OK. Rhodes, Greece was the most beautiful place. It was a perfect day to roam over a little Greek Island! We then Headed to Valletta, Malta and again another beautiful place that is laden with history and actually played a significant role in WWII. We then had a rough day at sea, and then stopped in Tunis, Tunisia. Tunisia actually has a bigger and better preserved coliseum than Rome but no one knows about it. It is also home to the ancient city of Carthage (Gladiator Movie) but there was not much to see as far as old ruins or anything. Our last stop was in Pompeii, where the volcano Mt. Vesuvius destroyed the city. It was amazing. We then headed to Genoa, Italy and took the plane back to Paris, picked up the dogs and flew half way around the world to Bangkok, Thailand where we are now. This place is awesome. It is the number 1 shopping destination in the world. The largest shopping mall in all of Asia is here. It is amazing mixture of old and new. We are within walking distance of almost all the sites in town. A great place! I need to get back to work, so please stay in touch

In XXX task group we have already made our decision, Congratulation, you will be invited to XXX! I'm pretty sure you are such an accomplished nature photographer which will present your region on XXX project in the best way. You have many good images from natural landscape but not much from Japan's historic and cultural landmarks, which would be good to cover in future.
The process of announcing the new member on XXX website will take some time, since we are all deeply involved with busy days of ZZZ events planning.

What prompted the revival of continental drift? In large part it was increased exploration of the Earth's crust, notably the ocean floor, beginning in the 1950s and continuing on to the present day. By the 1960s, plate tectonics was well supported and accepted by almost all geologists. We now know that Wegener's theory was wrong in one major point : continets do not plow through the ocean floor. There are few things more distinctive about a person than their hair. It is one of the very first features we ask for in any description of a new baby, a stranger or a wanted criminal. Dark or blonde, wavy or straight, thick or balding: all these different possibilities add immediately to the picture we build up in our minds of someone we have never met. お願いします。
What is apparent is that, through the use of a tool (and any object that one physically manipulates) the focus of attention can be less of the object and more on the task; in other words, the object ‘disappears’ during use and one is aware of the performance of a task rather than the feeling of the object in one’s hands. This is true only in so far as the task proceeds without problem. As soon as a problem occurs, the attention shifts from the performance of the task to the presence of the object. The implication is that tool use becomes a dance between vorhanden and zuhanden, between a practical, physical engagement between person and task and a theoretical understanding of the properties of the object. To develop this into an example, imagine using a file to shape a piece of metal (Figure1.2). As you move the file back and forth across the metal, you become caught up in the rhythm of filing and focus on the angle and movement of the file. To check the result, you need to stop and, perhaps, inspect the object being worked. If the file slips or sticks, then you might look from the object to the file’s edge or to the way in which your hand is grasping the handle or to the angle that the file is moving across the metal etc. In the first part of the activity, the focus of attention is on the action of filing the object, but in the second part of the activity, the focus of attention is on the file itself.

The oga-1 deletion allele (ok1207) was obtained from the C. elegans Gene Knockout Consortium as a viable homozygote and was backcrossed before further study. The oga-1(ok1207) allele eliminates the entire “hyaluronidase-like” catalytic domain, and the resulting protein product is predicted to be a null for OGA-1 activity (see Fig. 1 B). To test this prediction directly, the putative product encoded by the oga-1(ok1207) allele, which we term OGA-1Δ, was expressed in E. coli and was enzymatically inactive under conditions in which WT OGA was active (Fig. 1 C). Several hexosaminidases exist in C. elegans, including hyaluronidases, lysosomal hexosaminidases, and OGA-1, rendering specific detection of OGA activity difficult in whole animal lysates. However, the total level of hexosaminidase activity measured by using a synthetic substrate (47, 48) was reduced by 30% in extracts of oga-1(ok1207) compared with the WT strain, consistent with total loss of OGA activity (data not shown).
This raises some interesting considerations about how one defines ‘goal’ for tool use, and also how one excludes objects from the category ‘tool’. Beck suggests, ‘we are forced to conclude that tool use, in terms of topography, function or causal dynamics, dovetails imperceptibly with other categories of behavior’. One feels that Beck is somewhat disappointed by this ‘dovetailing’, in that it makes the scientific study of tool use per se difficult, particularly when this study involves field-based observation of animals performing activities that may or may not constitute the use of tools. By extension to this proposal, when one modifies a ‘tool’, e.g., through redesign, one is also effecting changes in other aspects of behavior. In order to understand and appreciate how tools are used, one needs to be able to consider a broad range of behaviors. For the purposes of this book, the quotation is interesting in that ‘dovetailing’ of tool use with other behaviors is an essential component of the argument being developed.

In the summer of 2000,Harding and Mehta moved to Heath,Kentucky,and Fox and Roth to Westside, Arkansas,the two communities we studied at close range about three years after each had gone through the ordeal of a rampage shooting. I spent time in both communities. This book is based on interviews with 163 people in Heath and Westside along with neighboring communities,including families of the victimes, students who were in the schools at the time of the shootings as well as current students who were not, teachers,administrators,lawyers,officials of the court,psychologists,newspaper and television reporters, and friends,family members,and fellow congregation members of the shooters. We reviewed the national and local news coverage of these two cases as well as the other rampage school shootings that have taken place in the past thirty years.

At least 385 privately run nursing homes across Japan are violating the law by not registering with their prefectural government, according to a Kyodo News survey released Sunday. Under the elderly welfare law revised last April, registration is required for fee-based nursing homes regardless of size or services. The survey found that 385 facilities in 21 prefectures, out of 776 in 37 prefectures that authorities knew about, remain unregistered even though the revision brought them under the scope of the law. The tally only covers facilities that prefectural governments are aware of. There is no way of knowing how many actually exist. A facility in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture, where a resident was allegedly locked in a cage and others were subjected to abuse was entirely unknown to prefectural authorities until a former staff member notified the city in January that its residents were being abused. The Chiba Prefectural Government initially said the facility, Blue Cross Yukaikan, was an apartment complex accommodating not only seniors but also younger people. It later corrected its view in line with a government guideline that facilities in which the majority of residents are seniors can be regarded as fee-based nursing homes.

Language Change - Decay? The phenomenon of language change probably attracts more public notice and criticism than any other linguistic issue. There is a widely held belief that change must mean deterioration and decay. Older people observe the casual speech of the young, and conclude that standards have fallen markedly. They placethe blame in various quarters - most often in the schools,where patterns of language education have changed a great deal in recent years, but also in state public broadcasting institutions, where any deviations from traditional norms provide an immediate focus of attack by conservative, linguistically sensitive listeners.
