Shouldn't this be part 72 or 73? O.o;; There was up to part 69, then someone created a thread named 68 and linked to 67 as previous, and then it appears as if someone again created 69 and then 69 once more after that (i'm not sure on that bit. The 69 now doesn't look the way I remembered the latest CiE part69 thread, so I assume there's yet another one, though I may be mistaken.

This page makes you download an Active X, a Quicktime application, etc. It's really annoying, but still this can be called a great website for learners who are seriously considering adding a brand-new yet really awesome word that has been making history to your vocabulary. It also has a great mp3 that lectures on the word. it's very educational. I strongly recommend to take a listen to it. Enjoy.
>>25 Like most Japanese people, I started learning English at the age of twelve. So I've been learning English for ten years or so. I guess that's not different from most of you here. But the method that I was adopting was a little bit unusual. I memorized every single word of the textbooks I used at school. I read out and wrote down every single line. I kept on doing it for about two years in junior high, then almost all the grammatical mistakes disappeared.
>>31 Actually, this sentence has two meanings. 1,Just girls like Home-runs at baseball. 2,Sometimes Home-run means sex. 1st base means kiss and 2nd base means xxxx... In Japan, they called A,B,C... So this sentence means "Girls like everything about sex" Did you meke sense? Nike is very clever.
wow!! Me too! I am university student absolutely with no friends! My usually day routine is very similar to neet hobbies! how come you dont have any friends? for me it is low social skills, I simply dont know how to communicate with other ppl. I usually sat sit quite and silent. I look unhappy
どうしても訳せないんです!誰かお願いします!! Tsuji convinced Mitsukoshi to let it be the first store to provide him with space. Sanrio's control over the whole supply and retail chain allows it to maintain consumer-friendly prices, as well as control quality and supply.
Several months ago, I saw an American was eating NATTOU on TV program. I was very surprised because only Japanese understand the taste of NATTOU. Of course I like NATTOU very much.
>>89 Well, they do not sound completely the same, however, for e.g., Caroline and Marilyn Monroe could be difficult for Japanese to pronounce correctly by only listening to the sound. If we look at the spelling, we are OK.
Actually i don't have anything to add to the comments above but, Now that ive ben laeerning engish for some time i can distingish them....with lots of difficulties, as you can tell by reading this, my english sucks and i have lots of learning english ahead of me but back when i started they were cmopletely the same , but that was only when they were spoken relally fast. When slowly spoken they are totally diffrent to any japanese people. the trouble is we tend to tyr to understand everysound exists in the world in limited japanese pronuncations. We tryto associate every enlish sound with a corresponding japanese sound( which is why so called katakana english exists, where all the pronuncations are substituted with japanese ones) And l and r sounds are totally in the same domein of ra row sounds so even when they know they are sensing some difference in how they sounds, they fail to think outside the japanese pronuncations box, and end up recognizing them as one of ra row sounds.
Thank you for your answers. What about the word "world"? It's particularly hard, isn't it? I don't think I've heard a Japanese person pronounce it, but a Korean I know pronounces it the same as "word". I suppose it is the same for Japanese people.
I've heard that it is difficult for non-Japanese people to distinguish the pronunciation of: kitte (stamp), kite (plese come) and kiite (please listen).
>>101 I see. As you may already know they are pronunced as the following: haSHI(橋、端)vs HAshi(箸), and Ame(雨) vs aME(飴)in the standard Japanese, but the placement of accents are different in the western part of Japan.
>>103 Well, I am aware of that, but I don't know if I can actually hear the difference. However, hearing Japanese has been much easier for me to learn than French. I can recognize the sound of a Japanese word that I haven't heard before well enough to look it up, but I can't really hear the sounds of French word at all unless I already know the word, I can't pronounce French words properly at all even if I do know them...
>>104 That's probably due to the "liason" in French, that is although e.g. "ils" is pronounced as [il], when it is followed by "ont," the two words are pronounced as [ilzon]. I don't think Japanese words liaise or run together like French.
>>96 world or whirl or pearl or something like that is somewhat difficult for us to pronounce. Whether we japanese in general pronouce "world" correctly or not is unknowable for us, without you guys' all-distinguishing ears, you know? I think I do it right ,and I'm sure the Korean guy thinks s/he does it right. only you guys can tell.
In this one, I can't hear the 報告 part well. It sound like there is an "sh" sound in that part for some reason. I wonder if "sh" and "h" ever sound similar to non-native speakers of Japanese.
>>114 Oh. So she did. But that wouldn't make it difficult for a Japanese person to understand, would it? When people make errors in English, I can still understand them anyway, if it's a small enough error.
In english okok I sympahyise with the guy who asked about that sound clip. You just can't tell it's normal or not when you don't know the language In this case, she just made a mistake that's all. Nothing fansy about it. But when you are learning Japanese, you just can't tell for sure whether it's just a mistake or it's just how sometimes Japanese people speak
When I run into the same kind of problems in English, I could go crasy like WTF? This sounds nothing like the script!! Is the script right? Does he really say what the script says? He just stammers here or something? Maybe sometimes this phrase is pronounsed this way for some unknown reason?
As much as i don't like this process coming up again and again, I believe that experiense points on these things pile up slowly but steadily, and that will eventually help me understand English better. So I'm even looking forward to it now, no i lied im looking forward to the day when i don have to dael with it hehe
>>174 Some people use a name for their posts, because they want to become famous in the thread... They are not content to be just a 名無しさん. Some people are jealous of them for this.
>>177 I use a name/tripcode not to become famous, but because I want people to know, when they ask a question, where the answer is coming from; people will decide for themselves if the answers I give are any good or not, but they'll at least know the source.
For random or silly posts, I use 名無しさん like everyone else; I use 'merkin' nowhere but 2ch.
My next-door neighbor is NEET. He is a nuisance for me because his life-syyle is the same kind as a cockroach. He always sleep in the daytime and is active at midnight ,when everyone is sound sleeping.
>>188 Ok, I'll challenge to explain for my training.
DQN originate in Japanese old tv program Totsugeki Dokyun(突撃ドキュン). This program was showing the people who was naughty and bad guys when they are teenager, but they were working hard for their family when they became adult. Above "naughty and bad" means, for example, that they drive a very noisy turned motorbike in a group at midnight, or steal money of timid students, or wear eccentric fasshion (they think it's cool).
One user of 2ch started to call people who has low lever I.Q. ドキュン. And this name became popular to the other user. For a while, ドキュン changed to ドキュン or ドキュソ, then changed to "DQN".
Do you think that a baseball player, when he goes to bat, has ever farted in the face of the catcher? Whether it would be on accident or on purpose, I think the idea of that happening is funny.
I think it's a kind of tactics on the game of baseball. when a pitcher throws a ball, then a batter launches consecutive sukashi odor farts, a catcher fails to catch a ball.
>>236 I liked him for his free and liberal opinion with humor. but these days he looks stubborn and too aggressive in attacking anyone who criticize him. Reading books like SAPIO, I feel a little fed up with the way he writes.
How are you guys? I'm so jealous of you guys having a cool fall. It's November, and it's still over 25℃ in the daytime and I need to use air-con since my room is too damn hot! It seems a bit cooler today here because there is heavy rain outside, which seldom happens in November here. I'm just wondering whether the end of the world is coming soon.
I hope the end of the world is near. My life is so nothing I could die in peace whenever the time comes. Bit it would be better if we all could go at once.
>>242 Look on the bright side. High temperture ----> girls wearing t-shirts----> you can see through their bra. If you are lucky you can see their unshaved armpit.
>>258 I am not Japanese, but I found it hard to understand what you wrote. Because "ni" attaches to "hisashiburi" and not "kitara", and "mo" is really "mou", isn't it? Japanese people often make it difficult to understand their writing when they use roman characters.
>>261 No. I am not the same person as 255. I understood what it meant by the way. I just meant that it was difficult, not that I could not. I think 255 is Japanese. His English is similar to how most Japanese write English.
>>260 >Japanese people often make it difficult to understand their writing when they use roman characters
That's because roman characters are only used as a "guideline" for the convenience of non-Japanese people who don't know how to read Japanese (including Chinese) characters. So, since it is "not" the purpose of roman characters to perfectly represent the Japanese language in the first place anywway, Japanese people don't bother so much to stick to the rules, but rather play with them.
>>263 Well, the original purpose of the Roman alphabet wasn't to write English, either, but there are rules on how to use it. Maybe that's the reason that English spelling is so mixed up. The Roman alphabet doesn't have enough letters to write every sound in English. So we have to use combinations like "th", "ch", and "sh" or the same letter for multiple sounds, like the "a" in "father" and "bat", or the "o" in "mobile" and "bot".
I can't pronounce the th sound, and I think it's the most irritating sound in english. When teachers teach us how to pronounce it and say Th, Th, I want to punch them in the face.
My English teacher (American) forced his students to put their fingers in his mouth to make them understand how the mouth and tongue interact when Americans pronounce "r."
Why do Japanese dogs, such as Shiba-ken, Akita-ken, etc. have straight hair and almond shaped eyes like most Japanese people, and dogs from western countries have curly hair and round eyes like the westerners? Is it the weather or food?
Indian people pronounce "th" as "d," and the British "r" is pronounced much weaker than the American "r," and these kinds of variations hold true for other pronunciations as well, so there is no point in having a fixation about how to pronounce those sounds.

>>318 do you actually know what an online RPG is like? it's not like you play a single player RPG with a built in chat system. you group with other people and fight monsters or other players, which requires a lot of coordination and cooperation between each player in the group. it's pretty awesomely fun if you like to hang out and communicate with foreigners online.
I played FF-XI on PS2 few years ago. Once I became addicted to the game because it was my first MMORPG. But I was very very tired of bloody mood, stressful system, human relations of my linkshell group. So I retired about a year later. Now I don't want to play MMORPG more.
>>363 that girl, great attractive on the first view turned out to be most selfish, moronic girl ever. she was lazy, arrogant bitch. He fooled me because she wanted me to fall in love with her and after that she showed me her horribly true face. I dont want to remember it.

Anybody know whether Japanese holiday "Kinro kansha no hi" has something to do with Thanksgiving day? Both are about thanking something, and are on the same day. Is it just a coincidence?
On December 4, 1619, the pilgrims (who were English settlers) had a thanksgiving dinner with the Indians (native Americans), and it has been kept alive over the years, I guess. It became a national holiday in 1863.
>>381 oh the Thanksgiving day dinner is kind of a special occasion? How special? I know people eat turkey, right? Relatives get together for the thanksgivingday dinner or something? And you thank each other?
It seems Thanksgiving day is a big event. I'm watching NBC and a huge festival is on. I wonder what the biggest holiday is in America? Is Christmas the biggest? Or Thanksgiving day has an edge? What about Holloween?
>>382 Yes, it is a special occasion. Relatives get together to eat dinner on Thanksgiving. The most common main dish is turkey, and there are other common foods such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and other things. People don't usually thank each other, but some families say what they are thankful for. It's a traditional part of a Thanksgiving dinner.
>>385 Christmas is definitely the biggest. It's hard to rank them, though. Thanksgiving is bigger than Halloween, but I would say New Year's Eve is bigger... The Fourth of July and Easter are big ones too, and then there's Valentine's Day... It's hard to say which are bigger for me... There are minor holidays too like President's Day, Martin Luther King Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and probably more...
>>386 Wow thank you for your response to my question. I really appreciate it. I didn't know there are some other traditional thanksgiving dishes at all.
I can't possibly do the same. Japanese holidays are boring and hard to remember, I think. Christmas day is the biggest hmm That could be guessed by me if I thought harder The rest of the holidays are difficult ones Marin Luther King day is amazing He has just died right? I can presume how big a man he was from that Valetines's day is a holiday in the US is amaazing In Japan it's a day for just chocorate giving and fucking. and I'm sleeply thank you for reading if you are dumb enough to read throught this stupid comments no i should't have said that. I take it back sorry. good night.
40 some years ago is pretty recent to me to have a holiday dedicated sololy to him considering other guys who' got their name on holidays. When you think about it, just some 40, 50 years ago, black people were still considered second class citizens is amaazing Of course I don't even know what Martin did to solve the problems. I know what Marcom X did, because i watched a movie about him. hehe
oh now Ive noticed It's martin luther king's day not Jr's day! I was wide awake and stupid.. I know even less about Martin Luther king then his Jr hehe I'm pretty sure he must have been a great great person.
It is called Martin Luther King Day, but it is really for MLK Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. led peaceful protests in order to win civil rights for Black Americans. That distinguishes him from Malcom X, who advocated violence. However, Malcom X evetually did change his position on violence after converting to Islam.
>>437 No particular direction yet. Probably social linguistics or something. I'm already fed up with phonetics, but the Theoretical linguistics can be nice, like.
>>440 How many languages you speak and linguistics is something different stuff. A linguist is some one who study language in a scientific way, and is not a polyglot.
English is enough. Anyhow it helps lot to pick up languages.
I wonder how many Japanese understand what a musician or athlete from overseas speaks in MC or a hero interview. Quite a lot of people seem to understand it from their big cheers. But I can only make out 5-20% of them.
>>491 I don't think so. Her pussy was wet so I guess the photo was taken right after she had sex with her boyfriend. That's why her face is pink feeling extasy.
>>494 I am not Sukebe enough to do that. By the way, I downloaded all her and her boyfriends photo. I deleted them all though. I am not Otaku and don't have a habit of collecting adult movies and all. >>495 Ketsuge burger incident was a hot topic a month or so ago so regulars here know what we are talking about, I think.
>>497 One man was using peer to peer software like Winny and he got infected with a virus and all of the photos stored in the hard drive of his PC was drained into p to p network.
Some photos were his girlfriend's nude photo. One of them that shows her butt looks like a hamburger. Her underhair was kind of bushy so it is commonly called Ketsuge burger in 2ch community.
>>498 I don't know about you but at least it didn't get traumatic to me. Call me hypocratic but I felt kind of sad thinking about her future.
>>503 Not yet. I'm waiting for the completion of the Disney Land Resort. There are still 1 or 2 phases to be finished. Yet I have not visited any Disney Land Resort in the world so I can't make any comparison. Dating spot... erm... You may say that. That's a place for fantasy, but not for hardcore exciting games. That's why I prefer Ocean Park over Disney Land Resort since it has 2 roller coasters and more machines.
>>505 Oh. It needs a final touch to be completed... I didn't know that. You can visit Universal Studio Japan when you have a chance to visit Osaka, Japan. I guess it has more exciting rides than Tokyo Disney Land. I have visited neither of them though.
I was surprised to know the photos are circulating on the net and non-J people have seen them too. Do you think non-J ketsuge burgers which we can get exist?
First, western professional porn actresses tend to shave their pubic hair so chances are slim.
Second, Western amateur girls shave thier pubic hair, too and chances of getting thier photos are slimmer than professional porn actresses.
I have seen a website featuring girls who don't shave pubic and armpit hair so the shortcut to seeing non-Japanese ketsuge burgers is to visit that kind of website.
To have a Western girlfriend and make her grow her pubic hair and take some ketsuge burger photos is another possibility but NEETs like you and me have no chances to go out with a Western girl.
Have you asked the police to search for me? lolz~~X.X well not yet. I am about to run away from home and go to Miyavi-kun's place in Jan. Wow I envy americans, who can get wii first in the world. I really want wii right now but I got to wait till December Can you imagin something more torturous than that?
>>630 I remember one year, we made a roast turkey and a pumpkin pie, and a friend of ours brought another roast turkey and a pumpkin pie, and another friend of ours brought another pumpkin pie. So we ended up eating the turkey and pumpkin pie at least for a whole week, that's why I hate turkey even now.
LOL just like what happens on Shogatsu in Japan. Lots of japanse eat traditional Shogatsu dishes for several days after Shogatsu. They make lots of Shogatsu dishes intentinally before shogatsu, so they don't have to cook much for that several days and have fun.
Has anyone else noticed that the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean cultures are very similar? I think it is because Korea and Japan copied the Chinese culture.
>>670 They are similar to the extent that they are geographically very close and had a lot of exchange of people, goods, and ideas in general. While it is true that some things originated in one country and have been adopted in another country, it is outrageous to claim that everything originated in one country.
I can't understand how many people there are who insist that their own contry is far superior to others. I don't think it is different from being patriotic.
China is the oldest civilization. All customs did originate in China. Japanese and Koreans could not write before China taught them how. I am not Chinese. Do not think I am just a patriot of my country. I just recognize the greatness of China.
>>675 China is the oldest civilization???@@ All customs originated in China???@@ Japanese and Chinese could not write before China taught them how???@@
>>689 A girlfriend is not a fuckdoll. Get a Real Doll or just jerk at your figurines or somethin. If you show and have respect for such a contract, you can get a fuck-friend. Never get a girlfriend if you just want to fuck: hell hath no fury like a woman scorn.
–verb (used with object) 4.to treat or regard with contempt or disdain: They scorned the old beggar. 5.to reject, refuse, or ignore with contempt or disdain: She scorned my help. –verb (used without object) 6.to mock; jeer.
>>711 It means different for different people. For some, god is about vengance and hate. For some, god is about love and forgiveness. For some, it's about how to live one's own life well. For others, it's about how to force others to live their lives.
Like it was said, there's a little for everyone, people pick the parts they like, and ignore the bad sides they are not interested in.
>>711 Probably what every kind of romanticised dreamy idea means to those who believe in them; an escape or an ideal reality. People who believe in God like to believe that everything will be alright because someone else is up there. They want to be like children who believe that everything will be alright because an adult, which is a being whose thought and actions they can only mimic and not comprehend, will supposedly look after them. Maybe God makes them feel innocent?
>>719 If they don't want to be like children, why do they call themselves "children of God"? And talk about trivial little things, like, "if I make a mistake, God is all loving and forgiving"... that sounds like somebody's parent, not a being of supposed wisdom and knowledge.
If there is a God, it is probably a mechanism or aspect of the universe we cannot comprehend. That is all.
I think the phrase "God set it that way" has a big pain-relieving effect, because what it's saying is that "You are not at fault, so don't blame yourlsef, it's your fate, because it's God who set it that way."
I wish I were a Christian, so that I could belive the phrase like that.
>>722 I was raised as a Catholic, and we were taught of "Original Sin". As I grew older, I don't believe in God now so much, at least not as anything sentient or as a being. Like I said, perhaps God is just a word people use for things they don't understand, like why bad things happen. It's a sedative and the easy answer to questions in life in the form of a word.
I like reading old texts on beliefs like Stoicism. It says that if there is a god, then it's in us. If that is true, I want to shoot god beams and holy hand grenades at people.
Maybe there was a God, but he got frustrated with people because they were being so stupid, so he became a hikikomori. Now the angels have to leave his food by his door, and his all-knowing wisdom slowly deteriorates as he watches bad comedy acts and mahou shoujo anime.
>>735 LOL, yeah, you'd probably be better off enjoying the sunshine....... ooops maybe not. I just remembered the sunshine is too strong in Australia and you guys have a lot of skin cancer patients. Then you'd be better off being reclusive (new word for me!) and talk over the Internet, lol~~
>>737 If I wasn't a recluse talking on the internet, I'd going around all night getting drunk in the city like every other 18 year old. I don't have the kind of money to get drunk, and all I have is a lousy job at the supermarket.
Besides, it always gets too hot here to do anything in summer. The beaches are always too crowded, and there's nothing really to do there.
>>738 Don't you surf or scuba dive? That's the image we have for Aussies. BTW, you might already know this but we have a cool word for a recluse, that's "hikky" or "hikkie" which come from Hikikomori (=shut-in or recluse)~~
>>739 That's what you get to see when you come down to places like Cairns and the Gold Coast. I live in Sydney, and there are people that do surf and scuba dive, but if you aren't into that sort of thing, than there isn't much to do at the beach. I'm sure the Aussies that go to Japan are active and exciting, and like to travel all around the world. If I went to Japan, I wouldn't see any "hikikomori". I would go to all the tourist places.
I actually don't mind being a recluse. I don't have any motivation to go out and make something of myself in the world. Maybe in a few years, but not now.
>>741 Sounds like preparation time before making a leap, rather than being a hopeless hikky. Thanks to you, I learned 3 new English tonight: reclusive, a recluse and making something of oneself. Thanx, and CU~~
>>756 She's probably just really fat. I mean, REALLY REALLY fat. If that fat whale of a woman ever swam in the ocean, someone might harpoon her by mistake.

>>814 I'll agree with you there. He liked tormenting and torturing animals who were doing nothing. One of them finally got so angry it killed him. People talk about how much of a good role model he was for kids. Wasn't he teaching children to go and disturb possibly dangerous animals?
why??? you don't trust me.i just want to be one of your friend.while im here in japan next year im going back on my own country.after marrying my boy freind.if you give your's i'll give mine. ok?
>>820 No, I've never been to Ayer's Rock. Only tourists go there, and you're supposedly not allowed to climb it because it's sacred to the local aboriginals or something. What's the point of going there if you aren't allowed to climb it?
your telling me i'm a stupid one? if it's me your talking about it really hurts ( !o! ) I want to know you in person. if your place is near with mine then i'll visit you, and let's drink together, well anyway, do you drink?
>>840 I thought you meant "Beautiful" sights, but what I want to say is not only the outside of a country but the inside of the people living there and the system of social structures.
Prime Minister Abe declared again today that he would recreat "beatiful Japan", which I don't think is not beautiful at all. For those who's not in the know about the goings-on of Japan, the government of Japan held a meeting where people were supposed to exchange opinions freely but they were made to shoot a question favorable to the goveRnment. It's ridiculous! What is "beautiful" in Abe's dictionary?
>>849 It's a big gamble for LDP, aiming at the upper-house election next year. I personally think LDP lost credentials, but then there are a lot of hard-core LDP supporters in the country side, and they may be happy about the return of the postal reform rebels.
>>848 I think Ireland is beautiful. I think people think a country truly beautiful when its people are caring. I liked the so-called Irish hospitality, and that is something Japan has lost over the years.
>>852 According to a news article I read, people in their 20's to 30's who voted for Koizumi, are not supportive of the current prime minister, because he's indecisive. In the first place, LDP occupy 2 thirds of the number of seats in the Diet because of Koizumi's popularity. They shouldn't do politics on thier whim any more!!
>>855 What about the IRA, and other social problems, such as poverty and ghettos forming? Everything country would be beautiful if all we saw of them were postcard pictures and famous singers.
>>858 Every country has a beautiful side and an ugly side, of course. But Irish people still preserve the nice & caring property, which is being lost in Japan. That I see as beautiful.
>>862 That's great, how are you going to fill jobs? We have the same problem here in Australia. People are complaining that foreigners are coming in and stealing our jobs, but then they have no one to fill the low-paying, undesirable jobs because no one wants to do them.
