Without idols conversation, the thread would've fallen through. So in a sense, Maki's fans should be dealt with properly. But be that as it may, they shouldn't have free rein. That's because there are many other idol fans in this thread. Why do we have to talk only about Maki? That doesn't make sense.
Do you like Baseball? Regarding the central league, Yomiuri Giants, though in the fifth place last season, has got a head start this year and displayed their great strongness so far. They let Kiyohara Kazuhiro, Rose whatever, and Etoh go from the team last year, and replaced the former head coach before appointing Hara the current one. Led by the new leader, the most popular baseball team in Japan has been struggling for the championship. New players and well-experienced ones have been doing well, of course. But we should notice the team's success up to now owes a lot to Obana, a newly appointed pitching coach. The media say that he holds meetings every monday and gathers the pitchers in the team to instill his pitching theory, and his efforts have bored now. As a matter of fact, on average, they lost only 3 points a game, as a result of which Giants has won 11 games out of 14, includind a draw game. Isn't that a coinsidence? In the year Japan won WBC, comes back the strong Giants, which once has Oh Sadaharu ,who led the Japanese representatives in the WBS competitions.
>>38 I didn't know about the new pitching coach, but agree with you. Giants is really strong in this season. But notice that the league have just started and it is still unclear which team will win. FYI, im a fan of Tigers.
>>40 To tell you the truth, I don't like Giants. I'm a fan of Yukohama Bay Stars.. I was so disappointed that I said good things about Giants in spite of myself. That said, accorgind to the media, Giants will win this season, or al least, they want. How disgusting they are.
I feel happy for Kanemoto! He is somebody! He never gives in whatever happens. I like him a lot.
By the way, I think we have something in common. I mean, Hanshin Tigers' fans had a hard time in the late 90's. They must've felt very shameful in those days. Like I did when Dai-chan supervised Bay Stars. How did you feel about being a fan of Hanshin?
just for the record, Kanemoto Tomoaki finally broke Cal Ripken Jr's record and set a new record. He is respectfully called Aniki(Big brother in English), and I think he deserves it!
>>48 Thx for bigging up Kanemoto. He is a great baseball player. Although he was traded from Hiroshima, he must be one of the most important and regarded player of Hanshin.
My feeling about being Tigers' fan? In fact, I was born as a Hanshin fan :-) I was born in Kobe, my whole family members are Hanshin fans, so to be a fan of Tigers is my nature. So, it is a part of my life to cheer for the team whether it is in good form or not. To be sure, we had a hard time, but it didn't make me feel like stopping to do that.
>>50 That sounds really impressive. So Hanshin Tigers is your passion. I always feel Hanshin fans are superb in that they never falter when their team lost and they are strongly believe in their players. Doutonbori river diving was surely striking. They must've known what would happen next, very biting smell and stinky stuff. Seemingly, they were a bit mad, but I saw how deeply they loved to celebrate for their team. That showed their great dedication to the team, I'd say.
Anyway, about my team BayStars.. As you may know, TBS owns the team, but look what they are doing! Although they should have supported Yokohama. They could broadcast Yokohama's games on TV! But all they have been doing is pretending they are fulfilling the commitment parent company would usually do. Why don't they advertise BayStars instead of Giants? I feel really angry about it.
Umm... it is difficult problem. In my opinion, the case of Tigers is special. I mean, its popularity is mostly consisted of regionality. The team has long history and keep attachment to Kansai region including Osaka, Kobe etc. For example, a Kobe local TV station, SUN-TV, broadcasts the games of Tigers almost everyday during the seasons. Why they do that? Because many people who can watch SUN-TV, in other words, who are living in Hanshin area, watch the games on TV. In addition, for good or bad, Hanshin Tigers are regarded as a symbol of Kansai people's anti-Tokyo spirit, anti-centrism. So, Tigers' fan become mad about the professional baseball games, especially the central league. It is not only sport, but also some kind of politics. (In addition, again, I actually don't like Doton-bori diving. I suppose that is too drastic.)
Well, I know few things about Yokohama. As I recall the genesis of Bay Stars is from Yamaguchi, isn't it? And it came to Yokohama in 1970's or 1980's. I guess the history of relation between the team and region are relatively short. And, there are two powerful teams of the central league near by.
This is just my opinion without any certain evidence, but I think these factors make such situation.
Meanwhile, I have to go out for a meal (I forgot to buy foods...). Thank you for chatting with me in spite of my poor English. See you, and let's enjoy the baseball games.
The Democrats seem to have taken on a kind of timidity that isn't natural for people who are in the party of Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Woodrow Wilson, Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy.
Easter is just a christian thing, celebrating the reincarnation of christ. that's not important for me, though. what's important is the holiday i get from this.
>>77 Oh, I see. It must be a national holiday. It's like Greenery Day in Japan. In observance of the former Japanese emperor who loved plants, Japan makes a day off.
>>80 Oh, France. The CPE problem has made news here in Japan as well. I watched on TV that colledge students and the Unions got together and walked on the street to fight for canceling the new code. President Chirac and your prime minister ended up retrieved it, didn't they?
>>81 was a great day! chirac scrapped the bill. haha... de villepin wasn't happy about that, i guess. but hey, he shouldn't have done it from the start. good for the students!
>>84 I wonder if villepin is the prime minister. The minister's name slipped my mind. Anyway, the Japanese media said although he was very capable and eloquent, the failure he made this time would lead him to give up becoming the next President.
Concerning the demo, I admire French people's courage to ask for freedom. I was impressed to know that people can change the authorities' arbitrary decisions.
Japan imports crude oil from Iran and US would want Japan to conduct economic sanctions on the nation. It's diffcult to decide whether we should follow America. On one hand, I think it is time that Japanstood on its feet and made decisions by themselves. On the other hand, Japanese people feel vulnerable considering what North Korea would do if we didn't have the US protection...
And discussion about the amendment to the constitution has been becoming heated recently. We should have armed force or not?
>>94 i thought there is the "armed force" in japan, called self-defence force or something. and you know what, americans spell "defence" as A - T - T - A - C - K and S. and here is another thing: those who live by the sword die by the sword - so why bother the japanese stand by the us, and die with her, while all they can talk about the japanese history is pearl harbour?
For what it's worth, the US education system ignores all Asian, African, and South American history prior to the university level, and European history is optional during high school.
Yes, we are remarkably ethnocentric.
No, I didn't take Japanese history in university...the professor was a radical feminist and automatically downgraded her male students.
Yes, I took a graduate level reading seminar (and three other classes)instead with a professor whose parents had been in the Japanese-American internment camps instead. By far he was the best professor I had.
It's crystal clear that the U.S won't permit Japan to get armed with nukes. No other countries in the world can compete against The U.S. with military forces. you know "When you take shelter, make sure you go under a big tree" Of course the U.S. is ,needless to say, a big tree.
Technically, the government needs nobody's permission except for its nationals. Japan could buy their bonds and feed the US military industry. That would persuade the US since Japan could never launch nukes at them anyway. But this may not be the best option because it's financially difficult to maintain nukes, and Japan would end up in a big part of the NATO in turn. It's not worth it..
I am not a pacifist, but I do find it hard to justify the existence of nuclear weapons in this day and age, especially when there are conventional weapons that do just as much damage but without the lingering effects of radiation. We would be far better off as a species if we took our nukes and used the cores for civilian power generation instead.
Reality says otherwise, though. There was actually a song back in the 1960s by an American satirist named Tom Lehrer about nuclear proliferation. If you can find a copy (the song is called "Who's Next?"), the lyrics still hold true today.
hey I just want to ask. I once cut myself (2 years ago) there is scars on my veens is there an cosmetic operation that can erase those scars from my veens? cuz I think there can be trouble if my future employer seen those...
You may be able to get a laser surgery done, but if I remember correctly, it's not perfect and (at least in the US) is VERY expensive. As long as they're somewhere that won't be too easy to see you shouldn't be too worried about it.
Of course it's my joke, I like jokes veryyy much. and I made fun of you a little. If you like jokes too, please tell me something funny to make me laugh.
The death penalty is an incredibly touchy subject...I'm not sure that I can explain my feelings clearly (despite being a native speaker). It doesn't help that the system here in the US is extremely flawed and proven to be biased against racial minorities, the poor, etc.
>>161 Define 'the system' as it varies from state to state as well as federal. Also, I cannot think of any that have been 'proven' to be racist.
My opinion is that the death penalty is fine in some cases. I don't think it is a significant deterent though. We should also be _really_ sure that they are guilty.
>>161-162 Death Penalty exists in Japan too but execution rarely takes place because past ministers of Justices have been avoiding their endorsement on the papers as much as possible, if I remember right. I heard that's been kind of an tacit custom for them for some reason, but not humanistic reason or any. So many death row inmates have been waiting for "the day" for years. That must be quite a punishment to them. They know it will definitely happen but never know when.
In Japan, death penalty has become a big subject. Here's a story why it's become a problem.
In 1999 an 18 year-old male knocks on the door of an apartment and a 23 year-old housewife answers it. He has a good mind to rape any woman he thinks looks attractive enough. When she opens the door, he decides on her as a prey. He swiftly gets one step inside and pushes her down soon after he closes the door behind. She screams with horror and with all her might she tries to shake him off. The man gets so beside himself with frenzy that he chokes her, before he makes it with the dead body. After a while, he notices there is a baby girl who is just 11 months old lying on a crib, crying aloud and aloud. As he has lost control of himself, he thinks he has to kill it. The murderer takes a step after another and gets where the baby is. He holds the baby up and throws it down hard against the floor. The baby, though it can't do anything against him, gets wounded and in a minute is made to end its life in a gratuitous manner.
7 years later now, after many twists and turns, the supreme court is supposed to give an answer to this brutal murder case.
>>165 In my opinion, lawful death penalty is neccessary.
Ideally, the law acts as an objective judgment standard, which makes it a supreme token of society regulation. Therefore, the law has the right to deprive one's Rights to Subsistance for him/her not repecting others' Rights to Subsistance.
In real life, however, the judgment system, which is supposed to ensure the law's supreme position, is currupted in most if not all societies. For instance, there are rich people bribing their way through the courts by monetary donations, and, lawyers exploiting the lack of evidence and turn the guilty to innocence, and so on...
Hence, there is need for modification of the current judging system or even a new one so that the 'correctness' of death penalty and other criminal charges can be improved.
It really depends Such situation varies from countries to countries Some countries (I'd better not to name them) really has an uncomprehensive judgement system that rich people can do what you mentioned.
However, we should have a deeper investigation on the meaning of "imprisonment" It provides an isolated place for the prisoner to think deeply what he/she has done. They can also experience the feeling of losing freedom. Hence, some of them will repent after that.
Should we provide them with a chance to repent? (them refers to those who commit murder or etc for the 1st time)
>>169 The suggestion on "imprisonment" would be one humanitarian solution to repent first-time criminals.
However, there are a few questions to such solution(assuming "imprisonment" is legalised): 1. How do we judge whether a "imprisoned" criminal has repented or not?
2. To what extend should law enforcers deprive "imprisoned" criminal's freedom, so that they will start to repent?
** I think we all agree with the fact that, we cannot judge different "imprisoned" individuals with the same standards because their criminal motives are different. So...
3. Would it be more reasonable for law enforcers simply announcing death penalty for all murderers? So that they would be able to use their limited resources to battle against more crimes, rather than setting up different "repentance plans" for different "imprisoned" criminals. (Although this does sound not as humanitarian I must agree. T_T)
The issue of the death penalty also comes down to whether or not you can trust your government to only exterminate the right people. In the US, there have been between 40 and 120 people who were sentenced and had it overruled thanks to the rise in DNA evidence, proof of falsified evidence and testimony, etc.
In day to day life, I'm against putting people to death. In a military/warzone setting, where lives are on the line and trust is essential, things are different.
>>174 Sorry, I'm a foreigner. I know that Maki is an idol singer, but does she have an official (and porn-free) website? What songs has she done?
I'm here. I'm also at work and very bored. Does anyone have questions about the US that they want answered? I can't promise perfection, but I'll try my best.
>>197 Not sure, but it sure made for an exciting drama.
>>198 There's only one way that I know of to do that: one of the cable/satellite channels has a TV show where 16 people compete for a presentation slot at one of the big fashion shows in NYC. Most of the contestants went to design school and have done amateur or small town work before, so they have some qualifications.
The show itself is a lot of fun to watch, as every week the participants are given a design challenge ("Make a dress using plant leaves", "Create an outfit for one of the other contestants") and a team of judges vote one of the contestants off.
Otherwise, getting into the fashion industry is like getting into theatre or film - it's who you know (and can get you a job or apprenticeship) more than what you know.
I haven't seen the film, but saw all of the TV series. We weren't sure whether to laugh or cry when we saw Yamada's room for the first time - especially when we were able to identify about half of the figures and posters on his walls.
>>199 :D Densha is said to be a legend risen from this board, there's a noval about it, in fact the noval is a collection of messages on this board. But due to the original authur was a common internet user, so he did not discribe Ms.Hermes very well. That's all i know about.
>> everyone, I have noticed that there are only a few of us use names on this board. Would it be more convenient for all of us to recognise each other with names?
>>204 LOL i think the term "Otaku" is very interesting... Could anyone who lives in Japan tell me what do you know about Otaku and how you feel about it? Thank you.
>>206 I'm not in Japan, but I will say that the term "Otaku" has a very different meaning in the US than in Japan. American anime and manga fandom have adopted the term to basically mean "Someone who considers themselves a serious fan". Someone who watches Naruto on the cartoon channel wouldn't consider themselves an otaku. Someone who downloads episodes of Naruto off the net with amateur subtitles 48 hours after it airs in Japan probably would. Even so, most people who are "otaku" by US standards tend to get out frequently and have some form of employment and social life. US "otaku" are a far cry from the extremes portrayed in the Densha Otoko drama (Yamada's friends) or Welcome to the NHK, and the casual use of the word here always shocks Japanese guests at US anime conventions.
Most of my friends (including myself) who are into anime and comics have a fairly diverse set of hobbies. My last roommate, despite helping to organize a huge anime related event (25,000 people) also snowboards, camps, has a girlfriend, and bowls in a league. I'm also interested in theatre, history, British culture, and cooking. With the rise of net culture and the dot-coms in the late 90s-early 00s, a lot of geek subcultures that were previously shunned started to surface to the mainstream. While some of my coworkers still think that watching cartoons as an adult is weird, it's not a stigma like it would have been ten or twenty years ago.
>>207 I have a friend studying in the UK, who has a pretty much similar way of living compare with Densha. He's got bags of Gundam and other comic figures, indulged in video games(he's got all the gaming consoles and heaps of games)...
So apparantly, this friend of mine matches most criterias of being an "Otaku". But he's quite easy to get along with.
Therefore I guess "Otaku" might not be as horrible. Or, is there other things about "Otaku" that i don't know about?
>>212 That might be the difference between Otaku in UK and Otaku in Japan
in HK, there is also Otaku, but the thing they love is quite strange -- bus. they spend most of their time on having bus journeys and taking bus photos..
I think the situation in Japan is quite difference. I'm not sure whether the Densha Otoko is exaggerating the real situation, but I do believe that there exists somebody in Japan who "lock" himself into "comic world"..
>>213 i dont know the meaning by Real Otaku but if we are talking about "Comic Otaku" then i guess what you are saying is right... i mean "Comic Otaku" cannot live without the comics... cause Comics are life for them...
>>214 That's not so bizarre. As >>210 stated, one can be an otaku for anything. There are a number of people in the US, Germany, and Japan who could probably be considered train/rail otaku. Rail fans have had quite a bit of press in the US over the last couple years, as terror-phobic people have been calling the police whenever they see people watching the train tracks and taking pictures.
>>215 I, as a foreigner, really can't believe that! But I really wanna know what they feel by the way, is there any "Comic Otaku" here? Would you mind sharing your feeling and thoughts here?
Some rumours said that the author of Densha Otoko (is it 中野獨人?) is actually the real name of Densha Otoko. It is really mysterious... thats why it makes 2ch so special!
>>217 It's because they were custom made for the show. I remember reading that there is now a mass produced version that's slightly smaller and far cheaper.
>>218 中野独人(name in japanese) is not Densha Otoko's real name... i think no one knows his real name except, Hiroyuki who is the owner of 2ch...
I am kinda "Gundam, robot anime otaku", but i could live without them...
so i have to say sorry and "otaku cannot live without what they like" might be too exaggerated... but for some "otaku", i would say "Mania" here thats would be true...
There are, and small figures are slowly catching on in the US. My local supermarket has two Tomy Gashapon machines that have been modified to use local coins instead of 100 yen pieces, but they do sell a mixture of Japanese (Pokemon and generic non- franchised) toys and US licenses (Barbie, Disney).
That said, I hate trading figures. They're sold at a big markup here, so a 500yen figure goes for $8 at most conventions. Since I usually don't want half of the characters in the line-up, it's always a risk that I don't feel like taking. Fortunately there's always eBay for finding completed sets.
>>231 Privacy is extremely important and at great risk in our modern society. While I may not have anything that I need to hide from the government or my neighbours, that does not change the fact that what I do isn't any of their business.
In China, there are stores selling comic/gaming related goods, mostly Gundam models, I bought some Gundam and Evangelion models many years ago. I've been looking for a set of Metal Gear Solid figures, the game itself is really a classic, so I thought I might keep the set of figures along with the game as a good memory.
>>244 Kylin eBay and the Yahoo!Japan Auctions are your friend. I know that there are MGS figures or gashapon, it's just a case of finding them at a price you can afford.
We have a lot of Gundam models here too, but import figures are still expensive. I'm not very coordinated (or patient), so I don't want to have to deal with painting figures or sanding down the edges. Give me a 25cm figure that looks good and I'll pay the premium in exchange for effort.
>>237 Umm... i would say no... at least they have something to talk about... if you are "anime otaku", then the communication by the anime is posshible, isnt it?
it is also true that normal convesation with non-otaku people is difficult, however not imposshible... they still speak with someone in their life
however "Hikikomori(ひきこもり)" would be the one who is lacking of the communication skill... cause they dont usually speak, communicate by speaking...
i know there are many (Hikikomori) people who cant even do the shopping...
>>247 yeah. I am not japanese. I feel awful... I read all day... and just sometimes I use PC to listen music. but after I use PC I feel awful cuz I feel that I wasted a lot of time... oh hell... I feel a little better when I think of movie called TOKYO.SORA(which means tokyo's sky) it's about 7 girls who are trying hard to change their lifes. one girl from that movie is a taiwanese girl who live alone in tokyo and preparing for her entrance exams...
>>243 Everyone hates examination But those who succeed, they must have found their personal ways in enjoying the examination. For me, I hate exam as you do. But I love the instant feeling when I can solve the problem completely. Thats why I am not afraid of exam now!
>>245 yea... the boardmaster should set auto-refresh so that we dont hv to click the "Refresh" button all the time..
>>248 wow, there are so many specific terms describing those comic-devotee!
I don't mean they don't know how to talk but I wonder if they speak with a lots of "er er er.." just like the TV drama Densha, Densha spoke a lot of "er.. er.." in the telephone conversation with Ms Hermes
>>249 oh me too I am promoting to university next year as well.. Thats why I have spent most of my time during Easter Holiday on study.. (God..) Maybe you can follow my way of studying. Try to listen to some soundtracks (without singers). It helps you concentrate on studies!
>>255 The whole "er um" thing is standard when flustered or trying to think of something to say while not being silent.
Personally, I find music distracting when I have to read a lot, but it's good for things like math.
>>256 The entrance exams in the US are a joke and have been proven time and again that they don't measure intelligence, ability to learn, or even how well you did in high school. Until recently, all they covered was your ability to memorise vocabulary and perform basic math (algebra, trig, and basic statistics). They added an essay a couple years ago, but the early reports show that quantity is graded over quality.
There are also subject-specific tests that one can take, but they are entirely optional.
Some of my classmates are taking US exam (like TOEFL and SAT) They always bring the exam materials back school and study. thats why i can have a look on those... The books are simply filled with complicated vocabularies that I believe most native Americans are unable to use it! (even if they know this word, they wont use it in writing essays, etc!)
hikkikomoris are just victims of bullying I think. their bullies made them believe that they are nothing. so hikki-guy starts to be ashamed of himself. it's really sad thing that can happen to a person
>>262 Thats why I am wondering if they can communicate well with others..
Oh thanks for providing that but I think I am not able to use that... since I don't know Japanese.. (By looking at the printscreens, the programme seems great to read posts here)
>>265 I've never had to take the TOEFL (native speaker), but I've been tempted to buy a study guide and see how bad it is.
The SAT is a joke. The GRE (exam for grad school applications) is even worse. The GRE covers the same areas as the SAT, but with bigger and more obnoxious words and easier math. The GRE also used to include an entirely useless section devoted to logic games which was replaced in 2002 with a pair of essays.
To show how bad the GRE is, I took it twice. My vocabulary score was in the 60-70th percentile (so 60% of people did worse, 40% better), my math was in the 75th-80th, and I got 90th percentile on the logic games the first time, and the top score possible on my essays the second time (no percentiles given). Sadly, the essay score was brand new at the time I took the exam so none of the schools that I applied to used it in deciding on admissions. Even now, if I want to apply to graduate studies again, I will need to retake the exam because of how low my verbal score was.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention earlier. It costs $150+ to take the GRE. I forgot what the SAT costs, it's been almost 10 years since I took it.
>>269 I was under the impression that hikki behaviour is derived from bad social experiences. The reason why so many hikkis are anime/ manga otaku is that anime and manga provide vivid and escapist forms of entertainment. Over here, hikki types are more likely to find themselves obsessed with or lost in the big online role playing games (Everquest, World of Warcraft, FFXI).
>>266 >>269 i would say that the bullying is the major reason of provding Hikikomori... or many hikikomori does not got to school because they just find school boring, simple...
i dont think there are hikikomoris derived by the comic...
I don't think it is correct to characterize the SAT and ACT as entrance exams. They are used as part of addmitance sure, but they are not the only factor.
>>270 oh what a pity I really doubt if the examination board has considered the usefulness of the examination.. Using complicated vocab is not the key to writing good essays..
>>276 It's nothing. It's just been hyped up because it sells. If you want some more serious, the suicide rate in Japan is ridiculously high. 30000 people a year kill themelf.
>>279 They're not the only factor, but they're a bigger part than anybody really wants to admit. SAT/ACT scores are used as a quick way to weed out applications, and anything below a certain range will get discarded before an applicant's high school grades, clubs, essays, and so on are considered.
>>281 Vocaburalry is an easy and pretty accurate way of measuring one's intellegence for sure. You don't wanna some guys subjectively decide how good you are.
>>283 Is that due to the high pressure arouse from work or others..? (But Japan is also a country with people who have the longest lives in the world..)
>>283 About suicides... do you think people living in East Asia countries tend to give up living more? There were 4 people commiting suicide in a row 2 months ago in my city...
Yet I don't really recall reading or hearing about British people committing suicide in my past 4 years living there.
Looking at just the words starting with "A", I can tell you that I know what half to two-thirds of them mean, and use far fewer in day to day conversation. The Exams also don't just grade on knowing meaning. The exams look at analogies (book:read::tv:watch but with bigger and missing words), opposites, and fill in the blank. The exams are also written to penalise wrong answers so as to discourage guessing.
Vocab is one of the way to measuring one's intellegence, And utilising one's limited vocab and present an essay in an attractive and persuasive way would be another way to measuring one's intellegence.
>>293 Harvard uses a combination of SAT/ACT scores, high school grades, family background (did your father/aunt/grandparent go?), essay, and how much your family can donate after your graduation to determine acceptance.
It is similar to Japanese universities as well - hard to get into, but easy to get a basic degree from (graduate studies are different). It is laughably overrated as a school, and is frequently given as an example of grade inflation run amok.
harvard sounds like a place for a rich homosexuals. btw, does anybody know where I can download a book called "the line of beauty" it's famouse gay fiction about england in 80's
I'd like to tell you a few things in order to make you understand the truth. first, Maki chan is an angel who carries teo holy and pretty wings on her back. last, she is mine, she is born to love and marry me. That's all. Thank you for listening to my explanation.
>>314 Don't tell me an avbious lie. Maki chan has wings now! If Maki chan loses her wings, she can not go back to Heaven! That is the biggest important question!
>>316 I didn't lie to you. See the truth. She walks down the street because she can't fly any longer. She takes the train to school bacause her wings were ripped years ago. She lives in Japan now because she is no different from us. If she had wings, she wouldn't be here to stay. Get it?
Are you serious? She's been mentioned here time and again. Everyone knows who she is. Try using Google searching engine. You can be sure why they say she's come down from the heaven.
>>330 Of course not. She played a girl nicknanamed as Wild Pig. So people sometimes refer to her as a wild pig. But she's not a real wild pig, as you know. She's like an angel.
How do you like "Friends" as an English learning material? People say it gives both enjoyable and laughable process through which we can improve English. What do you say?
>>345 Knowing a some American culture would help understanding the show better. If you prefer American-English, Friends would be a good choice to improve your language skill.
>>349 No, not all English speakers speak in the same way. There are various types of accent. In the UK for example, there is Oxford accent, which is considered as the standard British accent; there are also, Newcastle accent, Blackpool accent, Scottish accent, Welsh accent and so on...
So I believe it's just like Japanese, Tokyo accent and Osaka accent.
>>353 Affermative, English speaking shows not only helps you in improving the language skill, but also, more importantly in my opinion, helps you understand the culture associated with the language.
>>355 No, I didn't mention accents. Sorry, I wasn't clear. What I wanted to say was, languages used in dramas tend to be a bit unnatural. I mean, they exaggerate. At least, that goes for some J-dramas. Do you really think American people speak like them?
>>359 I have not met many Americans myself, so I cannot say for sure. However I am willing to take an educated guess, from what I know about British people.
I would guess that an ordinary American would not speak like actors or actresses normally. There could be occasions that they might speak in such way, I have a feeling, but I cannot think of an exaple for the moment.
>>364 Speaking of Itoh Atsushi, I remember he played Cho-Hakkai, a real wild pig, in Saiyuuki. And he followed Katori Shingo, who is a terrible bad actor.
>>369 No, you don't have to waste your time. The drama is rubbish. Believe me. I happened to take a look, but I found it too childish and embarrassing, in particular, when I saw Katori Shingo shouting something very rubbish...
I want to be a stateman who reforms all for the better In Japan. First I vanish 2ch. That's idiot and nuisance, Next, NEETs such as you send to the compulsory labor place.
>>374 Really? I have just found out that there are 11 episodes of Saiyuuki, I wonder if 11 episodes are enough to cover the original story. I remember CCTV in China shot the oldest Saiyuuki TV series in the 80's it was rather long, can't remember how many episodes there were.
I think I am going to watch the new Saiyuuki for myself.
>>374 You mean Saiyuuki is bad? I just started watching it. It is not too bad as expected. (But still I am wondering if 11 episodes can cover the whole story.)
>>376 I appriciate your thoughts. But I think 2ch is a great place, needless to say about THE "Legend" risen from here. To me, this place act as one of the windows of Japan, and think this is a good opportunity to know more about your country.
Oh, and I don't think everyone visiting this board is NEET. And the "NEET" you speak of, I guess, are only enjoying another life style besides the real world.
Watching "Friends" will help you pick up some slang and colloquial expressions, as will watching any English language TV series. Personally, I stopped watching Friends after the third series, and I can't remember how bad the accents are.
I'm trying to think of some other good shows to learn English from. Unfortunately, a lot of what I watch are documentaries, British comedies, and cooking programmes, so I'm not sure how useful (or available) any of them would be for you.
But I remember someone told me a long time ago, about using religion-related words. For some religous people, they might feel upsat if we mentioned phrases like "oh my God", so as an alternative we might prefer saying "oh my goodness" to avoid embarrassing situations.
**I have yet to met someone, who would react in the way mentioned above.
Hey everybody! What would you like to receive as a gift from America? Could you tell me the type of things you'd like to get? cOULD U PLEASE ANSWER ANSWER MY QUESTION?
LOL that is why we all practice for accurate English pronounciation. This would be a very good example to disdinguish the sound /n/ and /ng/. A simple mis-pronouncing would cause such huge big misunderstanding.
>>457 I think so, maybe because we're all doing something else at the same time we paying attention to this board, e.g. I'm watching TV at the moment, at my PC.
Oh, on TV, now I'm watching ATP, I think it's the semi-final stage. Just a while back I was watching President Hu Jintao having a speech in the University of Yale after his meeting with President Bush, in the US, live.
>>464 Oh me too. I don't like reading newspaper. I only watch TV news to keep track of what is going around the world. (I like reading books, but not newspaper)
>>469 Ah ha. Now I remember, interesting I'm re-learning my mother language in this board lolol. Thank you.
>>470 "神父" seems to be the direct translation of "God Father", but I think "Godfather" in Chinese means something different, "教父", how should I explain it..for example, the head of Mafia or Yakuza could be called "教父", a very cool word I think.
>>486 It is because English is an international language. So, people from different countries come to this thread so that we can chat with the same language!
I've read about comments by other people on that book, some say due to the fact that the real Densha isn't a writer, he did not describe Hermes's appearance and other things very well.
Oh that cool looking guy's art work. I've seen some very good art work in other boards in 2ch too. But for me, I don't think I have the patience in the creation of it lol.
From my past experience, I hated statistics, very much LOL. When I was taking maths course in my A-Levels, I dropped statistics cuz all those formulee gave me the headache... I still remember failing my stats exam... gah ... my brain cells were dying
I don't have to know what the numbers actually mean, just how to get the software to give them to me and put them in a chart that looks pretty.
For what it's worth, this isn't what I planned on doing (or want to do with my life). My goal is to go back for a double masters degree and go into teaching.
Teaching sounds like real fun, keeping oneself synchronised with the new generations, that is, if you can make sense of what the students are doing lol
I used to wonder what Maki's fans up to when they declared she was an angel and she was theirs. But now, if anything, they are saying that just to make themselves believe she is special. I mean, they must've noticed Maki is no different from girls walking down the street anywhere near your place. Just a teenage girl, that's Maki, you know. Maki's admirers refuse to admit she isn't an angel because Maki would lose both her popularity and attention if they said she wasn't. I feel a pity for them. By contrast, Yukorin is a real angel. She comes from the planet Korin, where there are many Korinian people living peacefully and I call it an utopia. That's why her fart smells of vanilla.
Shut up! Your comment sounds as much as to say Yukorin is the only angel on the earth, but you are wrong. Yukorin is also just a girl. She said she was born in Chiba prefecture and raised by ordinary human parents herself! You mistook her as an angel when she wore articial wings made of plastic, didn't you?
For the sake of people in need for information on Benny, I'll let you know about her a little bit. She's a singer and supposed to release her second CD album one of these days.
>>561 o.O I am sorry, what do you mean by the word "nigger"? To be safe, I think I am not a "nigger". Also, I haven't got a girl friend yet, and I am not keen on prostitution, so I am not fucking, not yet.
i have a big problem! I HATE FEMALES. well I want to find a girl just like me, quiet and with sad eyes, but all other females made me feel angry! I just can be with them! with all theirs stupid jokes and stuff like that
>>570 yeah! but I already found her. it was on subway. she was a blondie girl probably 27years old, but very very beautiful. she was a perfect example of women. her hands were absolutely gorgecious. she looked at me twice, and then she sat and closed her eyes
>>575 I think I'm not good at it either. The other night, an old friend from my junior school called me out for dinner, I'd always fancied her during my years in junior school and afterwards... I was very nervous, and couldn't keep cool nor logical, kept saying things, which didn't make sense.
haha, I rather hate my native language, so to soothe my nervous system I decided to read that book in english (my second language) what a mess. my faith is very hard: to leave my native country and go to the another country without any help
I am worst worst worst guy in the world I feel ashaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamed of myself. why? become... because of a women. it's very hard for me to soothe my nervous. i am in shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no russo-japan war happened in 1905. do you know why? because there was a ultra crisis in 1905, so to grow some prestige stupid russian govement decided to start war with japan. all we know how it ended.
>>581 I didn't really feel that way, just that I didn't know what to say to be appropriate lol. I was not brave enough to say what I was really thinking in my mind, so I had to make up something else to say, and that made me taking meaningless stuff all evening.
>>580 There were two waves in that revolution, one in March, which over turnned the Tzar; followed by October revolution. During the Tzar's time, russia was an imperialism nation, which in my opinion, caused much regional instability.
there are many great countries in our world. for example denmark or england. but there is two countries that destroy the harmony of our beautiful world: russia and china.
Good luck with Dorian Gray. I can only imagine how challenging it must be to read it when English is not your first language. Do you know a lot about the period when it was written? Some of the references may be confusing if you don't (and if the book isn't footnoted).
>>593 well, I dont know much about that period of time. but I read it only because of author. I mean his ability to show some aestetic or crap like that. or feelings. haha I am a sentimental person
A friend of mine is Russian, and the impression I get from him is that the government isn't in control enough to motivate the population, nor is the economy good enough to provide a real threat anywhere.
Ironically, this brings Russia back full circle to the pre-industrial age...
China is very much a threat, but should also be respected for its rich history, culture, and cuisine.
Wilde is excellent for that. He was an incredibly bright and creative individual.
Perhaps one day somebody will do an animated version of Dorian Grey like they did Gankutsuo (Count of Monte Cristo) and take it out of the time period.
>>594 ok that was not correct. but look I study history of russia. do you want to know how russia evolve? in IV-V century there was first stage of forming of russia. there was well i dont know how to put it well 'farmers'. and some 'farmers' transformed into military elite. and what they did? yeah, they subdued farmer. so farmers started to work on them. what is it? yeah this is slavery. well after some time, in 9 century there was a first russian ruler. and all farmer became a peasant. and until 1917 all peasants ( which was 90% of russian population) had no right. they was just a slaves. in 1917 when the power of the tzar radically decreased, all peasant took the powet in their hand. what this means? this means that soviet union was .... union of poor educated PEASANTS. those peasants of course had destroyed all russian culture all russia elite either was killed by commies or emigrate to other countries(for example FRANCE)...
>>599 I have not studied very much about the history of Russia, so please point out my mis-interpretations.
Despite the fact that the USSR consisted of mostly uneducated and poor peasants, the USSR nevertheless became a super power of the world during its 50 years' of development. How did they manage acheving such wonder?
>>604 because even poor un-educated peasants(read: slaves) are humans who are talented, for example soviet school of math was great. but feeling of being slave are deep seated in psychology of soviet people. it mean in such think like love or friendship soviet people are simply awful.
>>610 But do you think Russian people nowadays awful? I have a few friends from Russia, I think they are great. So it's probably a few individuals with evil minds, who also manipulate the population are to be blamed. I don't think there is a nation full of awful individuals.
actually history really change your mind, if you have ability to study it... (well some people can say: what ability? just reading books? but no, history is not just reading books... )
>>611 I think dubya is a decent guy, I didn't like him a few years ago, thought he's an idiot, but come to think of it, he's actually doing things that were benificial for his own country.
History is a wonderful and beautiful thing to study. The purpose of history is not to just learn names and dates and events from the past, but rather to look at those events in order to see why we are the way we are today.
>>612 yeah, I agree with you... I rather say that russian history can be used as a history of 2000years long slavery... it's really horribly history... what was russia beterr 15-19 centuries? well, there was a tzar and his elite (900000) who just used peasants as their slaves. while tzar enjoyed feeling of ultimate power, and his elite enjoyed the easy life. and russian people 'enjoyed' slavery.
The peasants were used as slaves across Europe from the Roman era through as early as the Renaissance (late 1500's) to the industrial era and the fall of the monarchies. Serfdom was by no means an enjoyable thing for anybody outside of the ruling classes.
let's discuss politics!!! look at this "Petty nations and their petty national demands are thought to be pointless at best; divisive and self-destructive at worst"
In business therre is an expression "Time is money." We could also say that "Information is money." Most medium to large-sized firms need to deal with mountains of information, from product development to marketing, from personnel to supply chains. 宜しくお願いします!
i heard 巨人師匠(one of japanese manzai pairs all hanshin kyojin)SAY "it' not corect that Time is money.time is life!" on japanese tv entertaiment program"gachinko manzaido"
you can say that again ! actually,I don't want to kill time here. but I have nothing else to do except writing stupid things on this thread. How about you ?
Is there a hikikomori board in English? I am having difficulties finding one, I do not speak Japanese. I read a news article, and found the phenomenon interesting.
Ah, I'm not feeling myself. I haven't slept for almost 30 hours. I could use some sleep. Sorry. You are right. We mustn't mention your classmates' names here.
Usual fucker jobs are listed on web search line. Those companies cannot catch my attention. By the way I do hate to take a job related physical and sales.
ah... don't think too much about it. job hunting is an arse. you can just get some job for the moment, and if you don't like it, quit and change over to another one.
hey mr.neet. i thoght you only spelled wrong or you were just a native speaker wannabe.but you know a lot of specific spellings japanese usually don't use. have you ever lived in english-speaking contries? are you from u.k?
>>750 don't think too much about that. no one really cares. i can understand and the other guy can also understand. that's what language is. a tool for communication...
>>748 oh you never used intenntinally?lol but somrthin and vwry sounds close to the actual accent. and i found a lot of native speakers are using somrthin and vwry on google.just a mistake?
even if you are not a native speaker,it is probale that you have a good command of english.
>>743 i heard of ""ass"" .but never heard of arse.
yeah it should be. but this is a english studying forum.as a matter of coure english speaking ability can be highly valued. i know english is not everything. we should learn through english, not from english itself.
>>773 As far as I know of, the usage of single quotes could be seen in British English. They have certain rules in typsetting, you know, the main of which are Chicago rule and Oxford rule.
By the way I've seen you somewhere else. You were discussing with Sirwi (now Shouga) in the other thread, ha ha ha. I liked it.
>>783 well... to be honest, i've done enough learning through english, and now i just cannot be bothered. i am learning though french now... not that i want to speak the language, but i have to. (by the way, i don't think you read my "i should say" properly. it's a way of saying.)
Ah it's bright outside. The Internet is bad for my health and my NEC chan. She is feeble now and has been making some suspicious noises lately. I should go now. Good by. ( ^ω^)
>>785 yeah, but that's set by some self-claimed authorities. you see, people don't really adhere to that.you see many british people using " or ' depending on how they feel.
>>794 london is safe. but tokyo is, i suppose, safer (at least that's what papers are claiming in the uk). but i don't really know. i've never lived in tokyo.
>>797 personally, i think he should concentrate on what really matters: his idea about how to learn english without wasting much money. i mean, what he is saying is basically what people usually do (outside japan) when learning a new language. there is nothing new about his idea. he has other problems though. he should leave the politics out of the board.
>>799 he's just not careful enough to be a politician, i think. there is one rule in the world. never ever offend jewish people. they are sure to get back to you... (well, having said that, i am not anti-zionist. just in case. haha)
no. it's just a general rule. they are understandably hyper sensative about certain subjects. sometimes, they over-react. i have some jewish friends, but what i don't like is some ultra fanatic jews... somehow they think they are permanently the victims of something, thus have the rights to do whatever they wish to do. besides, these jewish organisations are well-networked and wealthy.
>>802 i said "anti-zionist" coz i don't want to get killed by some crazy zionists. i choose words carefully, as you can see. haha... anti-semite and anti-zionist are different things.
I caught a bit strange sight yesterday. I went to a relatively big bookstore and of course as I'm a learner of English, I walked to the sheleves full of English textbooks where I found maybe a westerner standing in front of a shelf, reading some of the textbooks. They are all written in Japanese and, if I'm not mistaken, he was reading TOEIC books. Did he want to take the exam so he needed one to prepare for the exam? No, that couldn't be true. He mustn't've needed it. Did he teach English so he wanted learning materials? Yeah, that sort of makes sense. He may have been so.
>>812 i read in a translated edition that immigrants or students from the east europe are growing in the uk. isn't he a slav people, maybe polish? i think there is no big feature difference between british and polish. though there can be some diferences, i think it's very hard to make out who is polish or british .
>>835 You better be thinking about changing your browzer., cuz that's just no stateoftheart kinda browzer IMO. Korean is hot right now. Don't get behind.
>>842 don't know. they never return to korea, hardly can speak korean but have no idea of getting naturalized in japan. they wanna call themselves zainichi in america and speak preferably in japanese .so they are the first generetion of korean living in japan in america.
Zai-nichi has two parts, zai and nichi. Zai means "exist" or "stay". Nichi means "Japan". Zainichi Korean means Koreans staying in Japan. Zainichi Korean in America means Koreans staying in Japan in America. That means Japan belongs in America, which is to some extent true.
>>850 learning her name for the first time,i thoght she borrowed the name from moritaka chisato. maybe only coincidence, but confusing. little people point their resemblance. i wonder.
morishita resemles moritaka in appearance too. they have long limbs for japanese. ofcourse moritaka is prettier.but they look like each other. >>857 that is true of american porno stars.sometimes it makes me laugh. they are doing the same thing in naming the movie title.
I thought that is a friend making site, but it kinda gives me the feel of sexual advertising. O.o 870 名前:Kylin :2006/04/26(水) 03:51:41 >>869 I know only a little Japanese, what did こうさん say in his comments?
There are no three evils of a thing per a cherry tree, faking, and NEKAMA encounter system. It is considerably expectable. The people of the site here are looking for encounter seriously. there must be surely good encounter -- the rest is your text power -- よ fight ?!
