you can watch it by himself: http://www.last.fm/place/japan but it's very inaccurate statistics because only 2800 japanese people registered at that site. and to say frankly i dont think that japanese music is interesting
>>7 Ah. I wouldn't know. Just that there are so many people going ga-ga over japanese bands in both america and europe. So i was assuming there are more than enough good bands in Japan.
>>46 I've never heard of the author you mentiond. Actually, I picked up this name from a song of Swedish heavy metal band The Haunted. 'Urban Predator' is on their third album entitled ONE KILL WONDER released in 2003. Their tunes are extremely aggressive, violent, merciless stuff.
>>48 Relatively, yes. Which is why it is so frustrating for me, because i easily both can see why people think i'm cute as well as ugly. It's all a matter of what perferences someone has. But then again, i'm overly analytical. I usually easily notice the details in various subjects.
>>49 Interesting place. I definitely need to start hanging out here, especially since i actually can understand this part, since it's in English and I can't speak Japanese yet.
Hi, there. I know most of you are in love with Yukorin, who don't know about you at all. So I'm sorry to say your effort to compliment her will end up in vain. My advice is, forget about her completely.
Yeah very interesting. I understand Japanese a bit and with the help of computer translation I found it's very funny as well. Especially emotions like (@e@)
>>55 The Haunted is one of my favourite bands. Their latest album rEVOLVEr (2004) was great with the original vocalist Peter Dolving coming back. You can check out just a few of sample tracks at ttp://www.the-haunted.com/
>>70 She is. And yes she looks yonger than a 21 year-old girl is expected. Most people here have been enchanted, though of course some are not as I said.
>>73 *nods* Somehow the whole bit about "not looking the age they are" makes me think of Sayaa, though she's the other way around. -_-;;;; *shakes head at the pedos*
>>77 Not entertaining but quite intelligent. I talked with him before and I found him very interesting. He was gentle. I wonder if the poster who said mr shit was here right now had a chat with recently or not.
>>83 sorry, made a verb out of a noun.. What i ment is that he behaved like a fanboy at that and other images of that guy.
this is what he said when i said he was behaving in a cute manner: "Tehee! I am noooot~ Im just a silly fanboy! Hes GORGEOUS x3 I want! I hope I can get his hair done soon *squee!*"
>>84 Heh.. No, no, I am not the least bit offended, I've been mistaken for a guy often when it comes to chatting online. People seem to think that if you know anything about programming, you can't be a girl. I was merely curious if it mattered what gender i had, and if so, why that mattered.
>>87 Heh.. Those are what i call anime smileys :-p The japanese chatroom i used to hang out in 1999 called them 'anime smileys', so that is what i have continued to call them ever since.
>>86 You have a point, but at the same time some silly guys pretend they are lovely girls because they know males love to chat with females, as you may know.
>>91 It shouldn't matter much if one is a female or a male, in my opinion. I think people too often forget that we all are human. We just have some minor differences.
>>102 I don't want to badmouth her but she's not so smart, is she? Kaera is a good singer and is entertaining because of her witness. If Yukorin speak well, it's a different story.
>>103 She is exotic and cheerful. And I personally think an idol will be successful if she get popular among not only boys but girls. Yukorin is only for males; however, lots of girls of Kaera's age like her. Yukorin makes believe she knows nothing but her inside must be very evil. Sorry, don't get upset.
>>105 She is half English so no wonder she looks exotic. How about Beccky, by the way? Her eyes are attractive. Her nose looks quite different from Japanese girls.
>>112 Sweden.I've only started hanging out at this forum yesterday. I apologize about asking a stupid question, but i don't know much about famous idols in japan.
the world is changed completely in the last 15 years. it's because of internet. now, all of the humanity knowledge stock in the one place. everyone has the access to it. everyone can create a blog and write something. the times are changes rapidly.
>>128 Generally, they were changed and worsened. As you may or may not know, the rate of Japanese seniors are getting higher and higher. So we couldn't enjoy benefit. This is a big problem.
>>132 Supplement: more money will be needed because senior people often go to hospital but fewer citizens (younger generation) have to cover the money, which leads to deficit and so we can't enjoy benefit properly.
"the award was based on a survey of a city's infrastructure, access, education levels, crime rate, focus on the environment, culture and events, its diversity and how connected it was with the rest of the world."
>>148 by diversity you are refering to all the racial strife right? what with the Asians fighting the Greek, the Greeks fighting the Aborigines and everybody fighting whitey
There's a lot of racial diversity -- and yes, there's some racism here. But racist crimes are still crimes and Melbourne has a low crime rate (apparently that's why it did 5 ranks better than Sydney).
But I think "diversity" refers to sub-cultures and such (individualism?). I don't think matters of skin colour are seen as important...
>>154 If you're implying that there's some kind of racial warfare going on, I think you'll be disappointed.
Most of the racism in Australia (therefore Melbourne) at the moment is directed at Muslims -- because of all that "war on terrorism" stuff going on. I'm sure it's much worse in the US & UK.
Well, I just kinda figured it'd be easier if I gave myself an ID, so that you'd be able to remember I'm one of the foreigners -- (ie speak good English, poor Japanese). *shrugs*
Besides, western forums usually make people register, so we're kind of used to it, I guess.
>>145 You're the reason why western forums require registration. :P
I'm a foreigner, too, but I speak enough Japanese to get around 2ch. XD; When in Rome, leave your name off like the Romans do, eh? It keeps away the "gaijins go home" dorkuses, too.
I heard about 2ch on TV... this was before the 'Densha Otoko' phenomenon, but I bet that's where a lot of other people heard of it...
I heard about 2ch from a japanese person... it's too bad nothing like it exists in some non-japanese incarnation, because it's a wonderful idea. And yes, I do know about "Train Man"
There are rules here. But it is almost a lawless area. That is 2ch. English threads are generally good. But try other threads of this forum, many of them are kinda sucks ugly.
>>157 Because i was told to enter a name, here, by japanese natives on the board :-p I was happily posting anonymously until then.
>>158 Used to it, unless one hangs out at wapanese boards like 4chan and wakachan. :-D Though, those places still have tripcodes if one wants to be a tripcode fag.
>>159 Hmmm if i remember correctly, i found a link somewhere on 4-ch.net
>>160 Heh, yeah. Though I heard about 2ch long before seeing Densha Otoko. My boyfriend studies japanese language and culture, so he constantly kept sending me links to wapanese and japanese places like 4chan, wakachan and 2ch
>>169 Hahahahaha, there are many image boards around like the image boards here. And there are two places discussion-style like this that i know of. Sooo, Do you want me to post all the links in my bookmark folder for english places like these?
>>171 No. I posted anonymously, then non-foreigners here told me to use a name so they could identify me better. I guess it makes some people less worried if they can keep track of the silly foreigners invading their peace.
>>174 They do, and then they complain about not being able to identify you if you post anonymously.
>>188 Ahh. I'm too much of a hit and run type of poster. which is why i like not having to log in, but at the same time i also miss the registrated forum type of system. So i'm greedy and like both.
Hm.. I need to start hanging out at the UserFriendly and CommissionedComic forums again. Good places.
>>186 Thank you. I thought I communicated in English with only Japanese people here. It's interesting to communicate with non-Japanese people. It's nice.
>>190 No worries :-D I find it interesting to communicate with people regardless of their geographical location. This has a nasty side-effect of one getting good friends on the other side of the globe, though.
>>186 *actually tends to go there just to leech the pictures* lol
>>189 Sometimes it's nice to have an identity, and sometimes it's nice not to have the responsibility of maintaining it. (To be able disappear for a while and have no one miss you.)
But it's easier to make friends when you know who you're talking to.
>>197 Hahaha... Of course, everyone knows gajins are actually the demons in disguise. Which is why they're so uncivilized. *nods* So, shall we start roasting the babies and making virgin sacrifices, now? I call first dibs on the roasted chicken!
And /b/ is indeed heavy on the weirdness. But i've grown used to be able to cope with it. If it is one thing /b/ does, it is to numb your soul when it comes to the disgusting things and the horror in the world. Visually, at least. Torture cat spam posting was so annoying eventually nobody bothered to care about the poor cat.
>>209 Hi, K-tan. I wonder if you read Japanese. If you do, you can comfirm there're documents online that read: Yukorin said her fart smells like vanilla, blushing.
>>206 'since we were watching Bugs Bunny at the time Dickens chose me as his mom, we gave him the name George from the cartoon that was on: the Abomidable Snowman who finds Bugs, grabs him up and says "I will hug him and pet him and call him George." So, George is his official first name.' from http://www.misangela.com/mt/archives/cat_archaeological_dig.php
Twenty one is the legal drinking age in most of the states in America. How is the situation in Sweden? How old do you have to be to drink alcoholic beverages?
>>214 An interviewer asked Yukorin if she broke wind, which she answered like "yes, i do, but my fart smells like vanilla". So lots of her fans believe her fart is very aromatic.
>>226 No matter how her fart statements sound to non-japanese, it's true her fart smells of vanilla, and we are following her. Yukorin is an angel who've never told any lie.
from chat conversation just now: ---------------------------------- B says: since Gackt sang "I am your vanilla" does that mean Yukorin's farts smell of Gackt? B says: ... B says: w00t, jpop celeb buttsechs! B says: inform the tabloids! k-tan says: o.o k-tan says: o.o;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; B says: I bet he was thinking of Toshi </visual kei slash fangirl>
Yukorin is just different, she has very unique character, well, looks something like naive I mean she is really a girl cute girl. one of her popularity
>>208 Yeah, I realised it was a joke... Although I was afraid that the thread would suddenly end up becoming all about Yurokin. Although I'm sure her farts smell like Gackt and her urine tastes like cinnamon, I'm just not into bodily waste. Besides, Yurokin isn't that impressive. :P
>>241 >>242 Actually, I have no idea what's going on here, either... o__o;;
>>240 Japanese history? It's interesting. I have to admit I'm a more interested in China's history though. Japan got it a bit easy by not being attached to the mainland.
Although... I read Eiji Yoshikawa's Musashi. Best. Novel. Ever.
>>245 in the west we learn to little asia history :( japanese history is interesting i think . Btw i look for japanese novels , maybe i check out Musashi
>>246 It's definitely worth reading. It'll take a while though because it's pretty long (I got it in one big book, but you'll probably find it divided into seven or so smaller chunks).
>>244 I know. I just amusedly told my boyfriend about the meme, and that is what he said. Yukorin is pretty, but can't really claim she's the only person, nor am i into idol worship. And i know too many pretty girls IRL to care too much.
"Mono no aware (Japanese: 物の哀れ; literally, "the pathos of things") is a Japanese term used to describe the awareness of the impermanence of things, and a gentle sadness at their passing. It was a coinage made by the Edo-period scholar Motoori Norinaga. It was originally a idea from literary criticism. In his criticism on The Tale of Genji, Motoori thought it being seen as the crucial emotion that moves readers but Motoori claimed its scope is not limited to Japanese literature but affects the Japanese view of the world in general.
The verb form of "aware" means "to commiserate" or "to pity." The concept corresponds roughly to Virgil's lacrimae rerum."
I am Japanese too. I think there is nothing wrong with anyone chatting here regardless of one's nationality as long as using English. All comments on Yukorin, politics, culture or whatever are welcome.
>>253 You're forgetting some important factors. There are many many boards on this site. The english boards being but a few. So while the average Japanese poster looks at hundreds of boards, the foreigners maybe only look at a few, so they will post more often. And that due to timezones, there are times when Japanese people will post most, and times when foreigners will post more because Japanese people are asleep.
>>265 Keep in mind that the vast majority of all the "niggers" did not come from Africa. Their family or a part of their family came therefrom hundreds of years ago. So they themselves have very little if anything in common with Africans, apart from the color on their skin.
>>265 Indeed. These aren't "black people"; they're Americans who happen to be black. It's the echo of past racism and slavery that has left the black population of New Orleans to bear the brunt of Hurricane Katrina. It was largely because they dominated the lower classes of society.
It's hard to say how much can be blamed on today's racism. Whatever the racism issues, a lot of blame can be placed on the US government for not providing for the poorer people of New Orleans. They didn't have cars; they didn't have any money to rent hotel-space for when they left. They were forsaken.
>>267 Although in Australia I'm only about 2-3 hours ahead of Japan, for everyone else I'd guess this is basically true.
Hey, it might be more fiction than fact but that doesn't mean it isn't cool.
Europe had the "Knight's Code", and that's as much a myth. Hell, the extinct Greek religion is now regarded mythology -- and it can be pretty awesome sometimes.
>>272 >>273 >>274 Oh yeah... I forgot that Japanese people watch too much MTV. You realise that appearance and personality are two different things, right?
>>275 You almost sound as if you actually know what it is you're talking about. while I would agree with you for the most part, your opinion really sounds like that of something looking in at America without ever experiencing America and thereby not really knowing what its like
blacks are more creative types then white people, i think. many white people tends to like moralize, writing boring things, liking borings things, while blacks like to create, and enjoyng life
On another thread, I set a trip code to identify myself as a foreigner because someone asked me to, but then other people didn't believe that I was a foreigner. -_- That thread was in Japanese, tho, so maybe it's different in English...
Maybe they are enjoying life too much, and not thinking about important things. Africa is the biggest shithole continent on this earth. How many children die in Africa every day because of warring tribes and primitive way of life?
>>277 That site is fun to read. Thank you for introducing it I think most silly comments here derive from the same mentality as Kancho. It's a bit surprising that Kancho is not popular in foreign countries.
In foreign countries you will get shot or sued for doing kancho.Actually, you will only get shot or sued in America. In Europe they are too busy with gay sex to do kancho.
Yumi Adachi got married with a comedian. ut no one got shocked in this thread but if yukorin got married to a comedian, you would kill him. because you are stupid nerd
I only saw one movie with aoi! it was Eureka by aoyama shinji. an epic 4 hours tale in sepia tone! but it's not movie for you, neets. it's won major award at cannes film festival
some true fact about black and white people: black people dont think too much about crap, they just do what they want. white people talks too much about shit and dont do anything!
>>280 >>285 Wait. Are you two agreeing or disagreeing with each other? @__@
>>296 That's your arse! Fingers aren't meant to go in there unless you're feeling kinky or something. In the western world, such an act is highly sexual -- there's very low tolerance for such things.
I'm told that there are people who read hentai (by that I mean pornographic manga) on the train. Such things are done much more privately around these parts!
I live in Melbourne. By coincidence, this happens to be one of the most multicultural cities in the world. I went to school with Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, South American, British, Maltese, Italian, Aboriginal, Greek, and god knows what else. There are some differences between these groups because of differing cultural backgrounds. BUT. Many of them are also first-, second- or third-generation Australians. There was really nothing all that special about them. The colour of someone's skin is no more significant than the colour of one's hair, eyes, or any other aesthetic detail. It's just a lot more obvious.
>>280 was agreeing with the spirit of what >>275 was saying but stating that >>275 doesn't really know what he/she is talking about because he/she is obviously not an American and probably has not lived in America for long enough time for his/her opinion to not seem as if belonging to someone looking in from the outside.
And I think that >>285 was agreeing that he/she doesn't really know what he/she is talking about. At least that's how it looks to me
>>357 I don't mean to be praising Melbourne so much. Initially, I did it on purpose, but now I only mention it as a matter of consequence. Melbourne has its share of racism: our asylum policies suck; Muslims are being prejudiced; and people often have stereotypical/generalised views of certain racial groups. However, Melburnians in general care more about which football team you barrack for. It's a sport-crazy city.
"Casual racism"? As in the use of the terms "wog" and such? As in racist jokes? There's plenty of them floating around. There's also a fair amount of racism in general going around, but Australian racism tends to be all rant and no action.
One problem is that Australia has a kind of cultural inferiority complex. It's only been an independantly governed country for about 100 years. It doesn't have much cultural identity, but a lot of Australians are anal about preserving what little it has.
>>358 I may be an Australian, not an American -- but I chat with many Americans on a regular basis. I understand American controversies not only through my own reading of the local and foreign newspapers, news reports and other non-fiction, but also through the eyes of my American peers.
>>359 Unemployed university student at the moment. I do some freelance work, but haven't taken on any work recently.
now many americans will say "i am otaku and i am so good" but when i meet otaku behavior on internet, i think to myself "do these people understand there is a world around them?"
>>368 Otaku doesn't mean the same thing in the west as in what it does in Japan. In America and Europe people who like anime and manga, instead of calling themselves fans of the style, they call themselves otaku. Most western "otaku" are nothing in comparison to real anime otakus in Japan.
for me otaku is the person who is un-sociality, have few friends, or have a lot of friends who're into the same hobby as him. i dont like that kind of people.
otaku want to spend time jerking off to drawings of girls but if they do something to improve themself, they can meet real girl. that's why i think otaku are stupid
i wonder how does otaku mother feel when she think of her children in secret she feel like she is failure, but otaku don't care about that they only care for jerking off and buying things
I am also wondering, do the Japanese read comic books by Western authors like Alan Moore. His work is like literature, it has a quality that transcends the limitations of the medium he works in.
I am a student pilot in America. I have some european friends on the internet, and in Europe, private aircraft are very expensive due to government regulation. They have to pay fees to take off or land at any airport, pay more fees for talking to air traffic controllers, pay even more fees for flying over certain cities, and so on. It's a very big mess. Here in America, if you have access to an airplane and the skill to fly it, you can go almost anywhere and only pay for the fuel you burn. It is actually cheaper for me to fly an airplane on long trips than to drive, because the airplane uses much less fuel per mile than a car does. It also goes almost twice as fast. How common are personal airplanes in Japan? Is it like europe? I would imagine that since Japan has multiple islands, airplanes would be very popular as a means to get from one island to another.
I just a Russian dished called plov, it's basically beef and rice with a few extra ingredients. Now I'm eating a piece of cheesecake. After a meal like this I should probably go outside and run a little.
>>363 I would say that you're still not really going to be able to know what your talking about. Getting infor from your peers is still getting it from a secondary source and can as limiting, if not more, than a newspaper or non-fiction book.
basically that earlier statment came across someone stating "facts" about American life when it was really just opinoin based on what they've seen or read or heard rather than lived. Its fine to have opinions and to form them based on whatever you wish, just don't try to pass it off as facts or based on your own experiences when you don't have any.
>>419 she is not so cute. she just has a good make up artist and is often posing for cameras. her real face is quite plain and sometimes her skins looks very bad
>>409 Hmm.. Monster, i've only seen the first 8 episodes of that series. I should watch more, it seems good. But i'm so busy nowadays =( I have so many series i would like to watch, but due to school and friends, i have no time. That is sad.
>>429 I suppose you loved Britney so much that you checked out such stuff. But as you know, she get married to someone, not you. That's why you've been mad at her: why did she not marry me? She betrayed me! It's completely silly, though.
>>432 Actually no I hate her. That is why I was happy to see such pictures because they show the truth that Britney is not so wonderful as stupid fanboys think.
>>408 It is true that Japan has multiple islands, but its big islands such as Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku are all connected with bridges or undersea tunnels to the mainland of Honshu. So you can go almost anywhere in Japan by car or train. As for other small islands such as Okinawa and Sadogashima, people usually use a ship or an airplane as public transportation. Although I am not familiar with government regulation, unfortunately, personal planes are not cheaper than other ones as a means of transportation. Actually, people owning personal planes are rare and recognized as extremely affluent.
>>453 Yes, Sexy Losers is a very funny webcomic. One of my favorites to read. I believe the author is a resident of Japan, and he himself has written negatively of otaku.
>>452 Thanks. I was curious ^_^ That's how it seems to be pretty much everywhere outside of the USA, flying is for rich people. It's a real shame, because having an airplane to yourself is a freedom unlike any other I've found my entire life.
No matter how ugly you are, you can still find a girlfriend. You just have to build a natural charisma, and girls will fall for you. Maybe you're too nervous around girls, calm down a little.
this sound unbelievable but many of the otaku people attracted to drawn girls! and what even more crazy, they think that only drawn girls are beautiful and real girls are ugly! god, what a mess in their heads
>>475 otaku are not nerds. nerds do creative things, and they are smart. otaku consume and consume, and become obsessed over inanimate objects. truly, scary people.
>>478 Use your final days of vacation to prepare for school, or have a small party and socialize a little. Pull your hand from your pants, and do something human.
>>480 For lying like this, you will now lose 50% of your sperm. Lie like this again and you will 50% more of your sperm, till your penis becomes permanenetly soft, flaccid, and useless.
Yukorin sure represents Japanese idols. She is an epitomy of cuteness. To Britney maniacs, I'm sorry to say, she was married and had a baby. So I strongly recommend giving her up.
>>364 Yeah. I use MSN and AOL mostly, but the MSN network's broken at the moment. Email me and I'll give you the contact. (Put something obvious in the subject header, because I'll have to spot it in my junkmail folder I'm not about to post a non-spammy account on an open forum like this where it'll get picked up by crawlers. :P )
I do use other IMs sometimes, but I never really have a need to, so I don't.
>>471 But drawn girls are so SEXY! If only it were somehow possible to have drawn girls in the real world like in that Roger Rabbit movie or something. :P
On a more serious note, the attractiveness of a drawn character is usually a lot less subjective -- and almost most anime characters is drawn to be somewhat attractive. At the very least they're made to look hella cool.
>>497 I preferred Final Fantasy VIII. Final Fantasy VII was boring after the first disk. The story just went screwy after you left Midgar. Final Fantasy VIII wasn't perfect either, but at least it had a beginning, middle and end. Whatever people say about the story, most of the people who like Final Fantasy VII like it because they like chocobo racing.
>>504 Quake & Quake II rocked. For a while I was practically invincible at those two. But then school invaded my precious gaming time. Curses!
That reminds me. Isn't it true that poor Japanese students don't get school holidays -- you only get pretend holidays?
As in: You're on holidays but you still go to school every day?
>>512 Why do you think foreign people don't make animation characters lile those of Japanese? They admire enthusiastically animation and comics in Japan, but they don't seem to try to create such things.
>>527 >>530 I choose to disagree with the both of you. :P
Especially Tetris.
And chocobo racing sucks. It's one of those rare games that you can play with just your toes. Except without the eye candy and fancy prizes of Dead or Alive: Extreme Beach Volleyball.
Although I have to admit it can be pretty amusing to play a game with your toes.
>>420 Do you believe that the only way to learn anything is to experience it first hand?
I don't base my opinions on heresay. I research all my facts from reliable sources, and I suggest everyone do the same.
But American peers are able to raise American issues and offer American an perspective -- which helps to balance against what I naturally see on Australian TV. When it came to Hurricane Katrina, 50% of the articles I read were American -- the others tended to involve foreign reporters on the scene -- or would reference American articles (which I'd then look through).
>>535 "Right chief"? I guess I'll take that as a compliment. ^__^
(I have to admit I don't completely understand your meaning.)
>>542 Not always. But in this case, which to me actually had less to do with hurricane and more to do with statements you made that sounded as if you were some authority on life in america, which were connected to something you were saying about the hurricane or something or other.
basically no matter what you read and how many american internet folk tell you stuff you're never going to be able to get away with being sophomoric on america life.

>>524 Heh.. You haven't been paying attention. Many non-japanese people have started making tv cartoons and comics in the stereotype manga/anime style.
>>579 Puffy? Puffy who? The Powerpuff Girls? Those are american characters, created by people employed by Cartoon Network. If another Puffy, then please to enlighten me, i am curious ^__^
Teen Titans is actually pretty good... Though it gets a bit boring if you watch a few episodes (the story doesn't always make sense and it's too episodic).
The theme song is super-addictive.
>>546 Really? I would have hoped somebody would have told me if I'd been oppressed all this time. I mean I'd expect them to at least have the dignity to scream, "Thousand-times imperial oppression cannon!" or something.
This is the Internet. Most people are nerds here. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial of their own nerdiness. Anyone who says, "I play action games and not RPGs so I'm not a geek," is in denial of their own nerdiness. Anyone who spends all day sending messages via SMS and playing games on their mobile phone is probably in denial of their own nerdiness.
I'm geeky in some ways, but if you think I'm a fat, balding middle-aged otaku with thick glasses you might be disappointed. :P
>>591 hey, I am sorry but today is not 1995. the whole world use internet and if your internet activity is online games, downloads and talks about anime it's your own troubles
>>595 I can understand how do you feel. you watch animation, you play video games you met your friends by the same interests(animation&v.g.) you live in your absorbed world of nerdness. but it's only you
i said this in thread earlier: otaku are not nerds, nerds understand computer well, they are smart and creative. otaku, what do they do? they consume, consume, consume, and obsess for inanimate objects
>>591 if said "former" imperial oppressors, so you weren't affected. I think it he or she was trying to find a clever way to say that it is British slang.
then what do you call those smart ones that have great understanding for computers? still, otaku they are scary people. they are those that are on the bottom of society, and i believe the word "nerd" doesn't fit for them
>>606 there is difference in those that are creating manga, and those that consume. the manga creators, are sometime great artist that have been trained in art.they have a talent. you will see that they are also concerned for their outer appearance, and some of them are female. otaku are male who do not care for their outer appearance, they spend their free time buying things, and looking at drawing porn. they base their life around cartoon and forget that there is a world outside
I love geeks, nerds, dorks etc..Always find yourself falling for the guy/gal with glasses, mussed-up hair, pocket protectors, and an endless knowledge of computers?
>>608 What about amateur manga artists who create manga but are not paid and have not been trained? They are otaku but they also create their own works. I do not think that many male manga artists care for their apperance. I have seen female manga artists who do not care for their appearance.
>>610 you do not understand the word otaku. i like manga, many my coworkers like manga. are we all otaku? probably not. those that have talent and ambition, and utilise it for making manga cannot be called otaku otaku are those that consume the things others create, and become so obsessed for it that they lose social life.
>>614 But I think that these people who seem to just consume also sometimes create their own things even if they don't sell them or share them. can you still call them otaku?
there is different kind of manga, there is manga that everyone reads. like action manga or classic manga of tezuka osamu, who is a national hero in japan and there is perverted manga. manga that depicts depravity. otaku have a fantasy to images of high school girls. but when they go to high school, they are usually isolate themself from other people.
>>598 You're misunderstanding, but I don't really care. I'm fat, I'm bald, I'm ugly, and I like chocolate ice cream cake. I live in the Bat Cave with my eccentric Viking friend and I spend my my free time pillaging the under-defended cities of Europe. I also enjoy long walks on the beach, and on some occasions I find it quite enjoyable to mess with people's heads.
>>599 >>600 >>602 >>603 I'm still trying to work out what your point is. Yes, I know about computers -- and? Are you having computer troubles you need fixed or is this discussion as pointless as it seems?
>>604 Admittedly, I have to agree that otaku are awfully bizarre and creepy, but it's a largely a Japanese phenomenon and you have to wonder about the factors involved in creating them.
That said, I'm a slight Evangelion-otaku. But that's okay because Evangelion rocks.
>>621 only otaku would be so deprived. because otaku are so interested in pornographic image and they mostly don't communicate with other people, they begin thinking of the most disturbing and perverted things. perverted manga is not sold everywhere, manga with sexual humor is sold many places. but many people enjoy those things, it's like enjoying the movie "40 year old virgin"
>>620 so what the difference between japanese otaku and non-japanese otaku? dont non-japanese otakus spend a lot of money or time on animation and videogames? I remember, you wrote about how drawn girls are hot. isnt it a typical japanese otaku attitude?
>>626 Extreme "otaku" are the kinds of people who lock themselves in their bedroom and don't come out except for the bare necessities for ten or so years.
>>636 I don't know, it's getting rather boring with the whole otaku discussion. At this point random weird posters at least lessen the heavy seriousity here.
>>630 Well, it's the perception I got, anyway. "Otaku" means "home" after all -- my general idea of it was that it had a lot to do with the antisocial/obsessive behaviour. But it's not a topic I'm particularly knowledgable about.
>>634 Yep. I'm obese. I spend all my time in my bedroom, but I swear it's not on purpose. I just can't fit through the door!
The anime/manga Genshiken is a depiction of Japanese otaku. In Genshiken the otaku were really interested in pornogrpahic doujinshi more than anything else.
I think that's the difference between American and Japanese otaku - American otaku aren't fixated on erotic manga/games/etc. Of course the reason for that is probably because we aren't exposed to doujin soft games and erotic doujinshi.
>>642 Did I say that I understand how every single otaku thinks? I simply stated that my impression is that Japanese otaku are more interested in erotic manga and games, and American otaku aren't. Another obvious difference is that American otaku are more outgoing and social, for example, when I browse anime at a place like Best Buy (large electronics store) a worker usually come up to me and enthusiastically expresses his interest for anime.
>>645 Right, it's a fundamental difference in national character. Americans are generally more outgoing, and conservative when it comes to sexuality. Japanese are generally more reserved, and liberal when it comes to sexuality.
To me, it seems, as if the fundamental difference between the people who the label otaku is applied to in Japan, and the ones who apply the label to themselves in the rest of the world, is that a) appart from that outside of Japan "otaku" refers to anime fans only, while as to my impression is that inside of Japan "otaku" refers to the nerdiest of the nerdy. b) for an otaku, their live revolve around whatever they otaku over, while as the anime fans (outside of Japan, the ones who call themselves "otaku" to denote that they like the style of anime/manga) merely have it as one of their big interests/hobbies.
Also, japanese otaku do indeed also seem to be more prone to focus their sexuality on fictive characters and consume a lot of anime/manga-based porn, and dislike spending time with people who are not otaku.
This however, is merely my impression as a foreigner. These impressions i have gotten through my friends who study japanese language and culture (some of which have visited japan, others whom live in Japan), a few animes and series (also including such as Genshiken and Densha Otoko) - and interacting with many foreigners who claim to be otaku, when in comparison to what i know of japanese otaku they are nothing.
Japanese otaku is what i would call "really dorky nerds". The problem being that lately during the past few years, the labels "geek", "nerd" and "dork" have changed their meaning. "Geek" nowadays often is a very positive word, while as "nerd" is offensive. However, at some places, it is exactly the opposite way. Depends on where you go.
I am used to "geek" meaning "a person who is highly skilled in a field he or she likes, and very likely works within that field". Which means that a very good car mechanic can be a geek, and so can a computer programmer.
My point is, that what labels mean are not written in stone. Words change, words can be used for many different things, of which is some may have nothing in common with eachother. Words change their meaning. Once "gay" ment "happy", now that means "homosexual". "Otaku" means one thing in Japan, and something else outside of Japan.
Things get bastardized that way. Languages are constantly evolving and changing creatures.
and you wrote all that large text just to comfort yourself "Look! japanese guys, I am watching anime for 24/7 all of my friends are into anime, we are going to the anime-meetings together, but hey, I am not like japanese scary otaku! even I am never been to japan and akiba, never met any otaku I can say so, just because I seen few animes about japanese otakus"
I think the picture of Japanese otaku that has been painted is too harsh. Japanese otaku go outside, and have social circles, they have anime gatherings like foreigners. They are not scary hiding in dark corner jerking off all day long. There are people like that, but people like that are everywhere in all different hobby.
1) Otaku are people who have a primary interest in anime-based art. Some people like politics, some people like bird watching. They like anime. 2) Those otaku who devolve into stuttering perverts that would rather sleep with hug pillows than women were pieces of shit to begin with.
Now let's please drop this subject, because it's already been covered dozens of times in this thread alone.
no, otakus are geeks who dont know how to communicate with humans, so they are limitins themself to special hobby like anime and socialize by anime interest. I doubt that in USA star-treks geeks have any respect. same for otakus
>>659 Excuse me, people limit themselves to their hobbies all the time. Bodybuilders socialize with other bodybuilders, political experts socialize with other political experts. Why are otaku so special? I know why, because 15 years ago, there was a child rapist/murder Miyazaki that turned out to be an otaku. And Japanese public said "If he is otaku, than all otaku must be like him." Guess what? They were wrong.
>>660 most of the profession people sick of their work, and people at their work. I met people by only one criteria: their personality. it's something that otaku doos not understand.
most people have have too-generalized-image of otaku. speaking of myself, i'm kind of english otaku. and it is also true of other japanese who post here.
what's wrong about people who have passion and doing work eagerly like researchers? In a sense they're some kinds otaku who devote themself in finding the truth.
i think that japanese people, the characters of the japanese have to do with otaku culture. Japanese tend to be a maniac if they find something they like.
>>654 Heh. I've never been to a con. At all. That includes any kind of con. I haven't watched a single anime episode for more than a month. Most of my friends are not into anime, quite few bother to watch them, actually. I'm too busy with school to have time with watching anime. Compare that to a kid who has candy once a month and drools when he walks by a candy store.
>>666 I'm a student and belong to a laboratory. most researchers are what we call nerd or dork. if they were not in that social position like professr, people would look down on them.
>>674 I don't know, let's discuss our favorite beverage to drink. I used to drink coffee a lot, but now I can't drink it at all. Does this mean my blood pressure has risen?
The photographs are of excellent quality technically, but visually there is nothing extraordinary. They only seem to convey the bland, impersonal, and dehumanizing feelings of suburban life.
>>680 22! you're young. and saying that your blood pressure is high. i just can't believe it. Are you a kind of overweight person? Sorry, i asked too much of personal questions.
Her first claim to fame was through a photo contest called the "11th New Cosmos of Photography (Shashin Shin-seiki, sponsored by Canon) in March 1995. Her entry was a small 36-page photo book made of color copies of regular prints. The title was Seventeen Girl Days (also called "School Days"). It was a photo diary compiled into an album-like booklet which was not an unusual technique.
However, her photos gave a light-hearted, fast-paced, and original look at this 17-year-old high school senior girl. It was a glimpse into the girl's everyday scenes and ordinary icons: a pet cat, a record, poster, flowers, friends, and self portraits. All the good, random moments of her current life.
>>686 There are always worse people, the same way there is always better people. No matter who you are, you almost never is the best or the worst one in a society, because the bell curve says so.
tokyo is the best. why? do you ever asked yourself why tokyo people dont have any regrets about living in the one of the most modern city in the world, while people from middle of nowhere are always talking about "stupid" tokyo people?
>>696 I live in New York City, and I would rather be somewhere quieter. But one of my problems is that there are too many immigrants here: Mexicans, Pakistani, etc. They all have SO MANY childrend and they are so loud, noisy, and dirty. I suppose this isn't a problem in Tokyo.
I actually bought a washing machine for my already small apartment because I wanted to avoid going to the laudromat. The laundromat is completely occupied by Mexicans, and it's not like they do laundry and go home. They bring their whole family to the laundromat like a picnic. Their dirty children are running around everywhere eating things off the floor. It's total chaos.
japanese people in general have a negative prejudice agaisnt chinese. and the negative image is growing bigger and bigger because of the high crime rate.
this is a kind of political problems, but i don't like the chinese government. they interfere with japanese politics too much. Whether the prime minister visits the Yasukuni shrine or not is none of their business.
hey, since someone, sometime ago mention a movie called gaichu I want to tell you about a movie Sasayaki. it's about strange relationship between two 17 years old school kids. this movie was released in america too this is what writed on american dvd cover: HE WANTS TO BE HER DOG SHE WANTS TO SEE HIM CRY LOVE HURTS
Last time I was sleeping I have this strange dream, and I meet a powerful being. This being have this onversation with me
Me: Why am I so lonely? Being: Because you have a small penis in your pants. Me: Why do I have such a small penis? Being: Because of the bad deeds that your ancestor have done in the past. Me: How do I make my penis bigger? Being: Do good things.
So, when I wake up I think that I will do good things. But I don't know which things to do. Please help me redeem myself from the past of my family. How do I start doing good things?
>>702 I am surprised to know that many illigal immigrants from Mexico enter the US across the border line. I wonder why the US government doesn't improve its border security. I don't think it is difficult to build a high and long wall along the border which can prevent illegal immigrants from entering.
>>662 im a bit like that , it's not like i don't try to make friends , it's just relly hard if you don't drink and party wild im my town. but i am not totally isolated , i have a few good friends , so i guess im not total otaku :P
>>720 Bush doesn't want to close the border because business owners are his supporters. Business owners would rather employ Mexicans, because they can pay them less money than Americans. In this country money and greed takes precedence over security and quality of life.
>>732 Going to work, and such. If I wasn't coward, but tough like my favorite rappers I would spit my rap music and not care for their concerns. Life is a terrible struggle.
>>703 this is a false stastistic. The number of violent crimes commited by foreigners is very low. Most "crimes" committed by foreigners are immigration crimes like not have a visa or visa overstay. 90% of all violent crime in Japan is committed by Japanese. It only seems foreigner crime is going up becasue of slanted news reports and more harsh enforcement of immigration laws. I would not say foreigner crime is a problem.
Japanese just blame foreigners because they do not want to blame themselves
Do you think Yukorin can save the trouble of Middle East and Africa? I think Japanese government, as a means of promotion of Japanese culture, should persuade Yukorin to make appearance for Israel and Palestine. This is the only way to make peace between these nations.
the leaders of middle east and Israel could all take turns kicking Yukorin and they would laugh and enjoy themselves so become easier for them to talk to each other. then they could kick Yukorin more and remember how much they do not like her annoying self together And then kick her more. It would be so fun for them and help peace Yukorin should be kicked or slapped in the face for peace
>>745 suffering people would only suffer more if they see yukorin and have to see her annoying self. it would be cruel to show yukorin to suffering people.
>>757 Is Dwaine here? No. He has met a girl more cute and sexy than Yukorin and they are making so much sex the whole world tremble from the sensation of their love.
once yukarin is older and done modeling, i feel she will become a great author or musical composer or painter. she's blessed with beauty, and she has talent for all lofty arts of humanity.
>>769 you are a great fool. when yukorin is in my bed, it's not called "dirty" it's called "magical moment" yes me and yukorin are making "magical moment"
>>770 who is this yukarin? surely i don't know her. however, the way you describe she sounds like yukorin, but no one can be like yukorin, so yukarin must be a product of your imagination.
>>776 Is your balls itchy now? When I shave mine, it was so itchy. But I sent my pubic hair as a present to Yukorin. After she recieved that present, she made me her personal assistant and lover.
>>715 Not ALL the westerns. But www.4-ch.net is a western discussion board 2ch style. image boards include www.iichan.net and www.0chan.net is an image board portal, and so on. look at >>186
>>800 Which Vivaldi? The composer? Gotta love the four seasons.

Differences between the Native English Speakers of the World.
The British: - Say "Cheerio!" and "Blokes" a lot. - Wear monocoles and bowler hats. - Are fond of novelty boxer shorts that read "Home of Big Ben."
The Australians: - Say "G'day" and "Krikey!" a lot. - Mostly dress like Dame Edna. - Haven't a clue what a Diggery-doo is either.
The Canadians: - Say "Eh" and "Beauty!" a lot. - Wear nothing but fur wraps all year around. - Wish Quebec would shut the Hell up.
The Americans: - Say "Sweet!" and "Dude" a lot. - Wear shirts with Pro-U.S. slogans on them that are made in China. - Are slowly learning more and more Spanish.
What's your favourite type or types of tea and how do you prefer to drink them? Mine are Earl Grey tea and vanilla flavoured green tea. Drinking a hot cup of tea while watching the sun set is nice. Or with a nice breakfast.

>>823 I drink cold barley tea at every meal all the year around. I think that is best to stay well hydrated. It goes well with any meal. Actually, I don't like drinking hot stuff.
>>844 Last august. Well, was supposed to. Then she ran out on me at the altar. I cried for so many days. She said she changed her mind because it was bad for her public image. And i would have given her everything she wanted! (;_____;)
May I change topics? I'd like to know what kind of a method of english study your self. Regarding to me, I am using mobile phone. There are many sites to learn english on mobile phone now. How about you?
Hello everyone. I'm a Russian interested in visiting Japan. Please tell me, what is the Japanese attitude toward Russian people? And would I be welcomed in your country?
Don't you think that Yukorin will be wellcome even in Russia if she goes there as her cute smile and aromatic fart must get favor from anyone anywhere in the world, do you?
Actually I wouldn't be surprised if >>853 was referring to the ads you get when you click on a link in 2ch and it redirects you through ime.st, where you have to click on the URL first.
I'm sorry if I'm not making myself too clear. I'm tired, and English is my second language.
Japanese must have very short memory to be entertained by the samething over and over again. otherwise people on tv would change their acts more often. I hate it when the magician pulls cards from his mouth. it is boring now because he does it too much!
>>874 You are right. Yukorin does not make me bored. She makes me irritated because she is too annoying and stupid looking. She must be slapped in the face
>>876 Not too much, I don't think. I haven't been paying too much attention, but I think they look quite British -- except Russians tend to be taller (and more blond perhaps?).
>>877 I don't see what all the fuss is about. She's youthful... but perhaps too youthful.
Then again, if more people's farts smelled of Gackt, there might be fewer warring countries. :P
i think siberia takes up a majority of the land in russia. btw, is 2ch moderated? if not, what's stopping from becoming a jungle of advertisement and spam.
If you post good information some people will hate and insult you. If you make a mistake some people will hate and insult you. Probably the same people but it's hard to tell because 97% of them are 名無しさん
Second 2ch tip.
Decide early on whether you want to be 名無しさん or not. There are advantages and disadvantages to both ways. If you do use a username then add a トリップ (trip) which you do by typing #somestuff after your name. (Remember what 'somestuff' is because you might lose it later).
コテハンs (people with fixed names) generally have a reputation - and this naturally makes them bigger targets for the general 2ch crap. On the other hand if you don't have a fixed name you'll have trouble persuading people you know what you're talking about with regards to the English language. (Well, you will anyway with some people - see tip one). Posting under 名無しさん means never having to say you're sorry because they won't (generally) know it's you when you post again.
in truth i post as anonymous because i think people who post with names and trip want to make internet reputation for themself. since anonymous post is allowed here, why not use it? in many forums you cannot. i think you should only use name when people are knowing your posts and expecting to talk to you.
Today I got a CD rack that holds 240 CDs. I loaded all my CDs into it, but there were about 20 extras that didn't fit.
Now I can't decide if I wanna just keep the extras somewhere else, or find 20 to sell to BookOff so everything fits. If I sell some, then I'll feel obligated to keep only 240 CDs for as long as I have the new CD tower... but my room will be nice and organized. :/
>>905 I believe it depends on your perspective. Do you believe music as true art? Then you should keep your cd's, perhaps you can put them inside a closet where they are out of your view. If music is not something you taken so seriously, and only there for slight entertainment, then you should sell these cd's.
I have iPOD for tons of mp3s I have. I dont buy cd frequently because I am not into serious music, that you can lay off on your bad, and listen to(like classical). But I want to buy vinyl player for some records
Vinyl players have gotten very popular lately. I belive this trend started in England and the United States, where people calling themself "beatdiggers" began looking for old soul, r&b, and funk records that were sampled in their favorite hip-hop songs.
But now, it has outgrew it's humble beginnings and associations with hip-hop culture, and old vinyl records are truly popular worldwide. It's interesting to see that such a thing has been ressurected, and is now played alongside digital media.
>>910 yeah, I am interesed in hip-hop and that vintage things! some of independent hip-hop records are truly amazing, I believe it's the most edge-cutting music today.
>>906 Mr Shit, who's the most intelligent and benign of all we've had, must be nearly 60 years old. He said to us that he didn't especially like female idols without good knowledge on things about artists/novelists. He loved to talk with a woman like Yukorin because she was so smart.
>>913 I couldn't guess who you're referring to. He hasn't recently appeared here, Mr Shit... As I see it, he left for some other board, and of course he must've changed his name. We'd never met him in 2ch, I'm sorry.
>>917 What're you saying? Mr Shit is not a real person? Of course, there must be no one by that name offline, but Mr Shit is not a computer or an animal or whatever. He's somewhere in Japan. We know that.
>>923 Do you mean he was not honest? I thought he used an ID, I mean, he was what we call kotehang. And obviously, even Mr Shit was one of the user here.
Let's get into more complicated and difficult matter. Yukorin said her fart smelt like vanilla. But to be honest, I've never met a girl whose fart is so aromatic. Did she tell a lie to us? If so, why did she do it? Or if I'm domb enough not to know girls' fart usually smells of fart, what made their fart vanilla-like? What's your point of view on this?
>>929 NO! You're absolutely wrong. I take umbrage with that statement. As you may not see him online, though, Mr Shit was here to post interesting messages. He's real. He must be living somewhere in Japan. I'm completely sure about it. You can believe me.
I doubt Yukorin was from Korin Planet. If she is not that cute, she musta bashed. Do you know when a girl lies and what for? I can't guess why Yukorin said she was Korinian...
>>928 She was probably exaggerating. Farts usually don't smell much unless you've been eating something that makes them smelly. And so since her farts don't smell, she probably was trying to state that her farts are not smelly. And instead of coming with a long explenation of how they don't smell, she merely stated that they didn't smell bad by stating her farts was vanilla scented.
But you probably can get vanilla like farts if you overdose on vanilla or so. Nothing I would recommend.
Anyway,I will buy digital audio player. but, recent CD soft is have a copy gard! so,if I have a digital audio player,I can't copy a recent CD music. how do you think about a digital audio player?
>>936 If you bump into Yukorin when you are walking across the street and she drops her belongings before you pick them up, and when you look up, Yukorin look you in the eyes as if to say she's just fallen in love with you, then what will you do next? Ask her out?
>>938 At the other forum i usually am at, there used to be this person who posted under Tomoyo's name (Tomoto from Card Captor Sakura) and tripcode. In reality, it probably was an old man. But in the forums she was always cheerful, friendly and sweet to everyone, acting like Tomoyo from CCS. I haven't seen her for a month or two. I miss her, she was nice.
do you know where I can download english audiobooks? I want to read book in english while listening to perfect english speaking! it's good way to teach myself english pronounce and understanding spoken english
>>946 Try looking at the BBC radio shows page? I do think they have radio dramatizations of some books. Otherwise try using some peer to peer program or bittorrent page?
>>907 That's good advice, thanks! I'm going to keep the extra CDs. I like all kinds of music... CAKE, Green Day, Blink182... And some Japanese pop, too...
Yuko Ogura is mean! ^^ She almost makes me like her more than I like Ayaya, but I'm resisting bravely! Of course, she can't sing very well, and she can't actually dance, but she's annoyingly cute! And even though she'll be turning 22 this November, she still looks much younger and fits perfectly the lolita-style which make a lot of pervs drool over her photobooks and DVDs ^_^; And maybe she'll eventually improve her singing and dancing skills, although many people think that that clumsy look is actually part of her charm.
>>976 I don't think people describe that kind of girl mean! I'm worried if too much love turns into great hatred. Sure, Yukorin is pure, calm, and pretty. No doubt about it. I don't want to deny it.
>>979 Are you kidding? She's a famous idol! Once you watch her on TV, if you're a male, then you'll be in love with her. People in this thread have been enchanted for years.
O.K., I did a search on her and yes, I have to admit, she's cute. But not exceptionally or uniquely so. I guess it's like the entertainment news programs and talk shows in the U.S., they keep talking about a celebrity even when they're not exceptional or even noteworthy.
I'm guessing Yukorin is the Paris Hilton of Japan. The more you hear about her, the less likely you are to like her.
