Korean Pilots Face Crisis over ICAO English Evaluations Many pilots from Korean Air and Asiana Airlines are on the verge of being cut out from international routes starting 2008. This is because the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), an agency of the United Nations, has decided to evaluate the English conversation ability of airline pilots and air traffic controllers from non-English speaking nations in order to reduce the number of accidents, and those who fail to pass those evaluations would be taken off international lines. あっははははは↓ やっぱり大韓航空やアシアナに乗るのは、可也危険なんだな。 83年にKAL007便が撃ち落されたのも英語が出来なかったからじゃ? Korean pilots and air traffic controllers cannot shake the stigma of having the worst English conversation skills on the international lines. There is talk that the ICAO's primary target was Northeast Asia, and Korea in particular. This is because of Korea's record of accidents resulting from the poor English skills of its pilots. During the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States, a Korean Air passenger liner was nearly shot down by U.S. fighter jets that had made a sortie after mistaking the craft for a hijacked jet. It was learned that the pilot's poor English skills played a large part in this incident. http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200410/200410150024.html http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%A4%A7%E9%9F%93%E8%88%AA%E7%A9%BA%E6%A9%9F%E6%92%83%E5%A2%9C%E4%BA%8B%E4%BB%B6

Korean Dream’s Bright and Dark Side Currently, Korea has over 400,000 foreign workers from more than 10 countries including Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. What is perhaps a bigger problem is crimes committed by these people. Recent reports show their tendency of forming criminal organizations through growing powers and expanding base areas. The self-claimed representative of their mother nation is reported to have arranged jobs for those who pay for them. They also use violence to hinder other foreigner’s businesses from entering their areas. Indeed, there are increasing reports in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province complaining of the lack of security caused by frequent fights at night among foreigners. The National Police Agency estimates that the number of foreign criminals caught has steadily increased by 20 percent every year. http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?bicode=040000&biid=2004101974428

>>152 Hana and I happened to have grown up in similar homes. We both have a parent who has Japanese blood, grew up in Japan, and speaks fluent, native Japanese. In my case, it's my mother. In Hana's case, it's her father. As uncomfortable as I am talking about racism and discrimination here, it's becoming such an omnipresent factor in our daily lives that it would be ignorant of me not to. Nothing sticks out more than a group of Americans standing a head above everyone else on the subways or cracking up over a good joke in a restaurant. We get nasty looks from Japanese men and women on a daily basis. They'll think that some of us girls wear skirts that are too short or that we shouldn't be dancing on the sidewalks while listening to our iPods on the way to school. It is true that, on the whole, Japanese women don't wear very revealing clothing or do anything but walk on the sidewalks here, but is that reason enough to glare at us?

komdo vs kendoのところ。 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese Masters did NOT teach Koreans Kendo. Kendo is a form of Kumdo, not vice versa. Japan was taught Korean techniques by the Koreans when Japan was created by Koreans and the Chinese when they left their countries to escape prosecution. Korea taught Japan and then Japan turned around and conquered Japan. Besides, Japan wasn't even a country during the time when Kumdo became a formal martial art. It was a colony of Korea. So explain how Japan taught Korea their techniques if there was no Japan at the time...

He said the "Bush Doctrine" developed in the wake of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington had led the US to tighten its grip on many areas of the world. The policy "advocates the United States should rule over the whole world with overwhelming force, military force in particular," he said.
Korean and Japanese are "isolated" languages. It's still not proven that these languages have a connection with "Altaic" languages, altough Korean and Japanese seem to be related somehow.
One Thousand years ago, Japanese in Peninsula were called Wajin. Korean who defected to Japanese Archipelago were called Naturalized Japanese. Northern Korean were a part of China.
Discover magazine this month has an article about the ancestry of the Japanese The article mentions that many Japanese would prefer not to know the truth. And based on the conclusions in the article it's easy to understand why. Basically the article finds that the ancestors of the Japanese are Koreans and the "Jomon" people who are identical to, and were the ancestors of, the Ainu. These conclusions should not be too distressing---except that the Japanese have a strong prejudice against the Koreans and the Ainu and have denied that these peoples are their ancestors. Jared Diamond, the author of the article, discusses why the Korean and Japanese languages show very large differences even though the ancestors of the Japanese were Koreans who crossed over to Japan only 1600 years ago. Diamond explains that the Koreans who went to Japan were from the Koguryo kingdom of Korea---a kingdom that spoke a different language (more like Japanese) than the Silla kingdom. (The Silla kingdom unified Korea and the Silla language is the basis of modern Korean). Diamond backs up his opinions with genetic and archeological evidence. Although Diamond doesn't state it--there are other interesting conclusions that are implied by the article.
Facts in the article seem to support the view that Caucasians and Mongoloids had a more Caucasoid common ancestor in the time before 13000 years ago. Other facts support the conclusion that an isolated population will share less of the genes causing "sapienization" and so remain less evolved or more primitive. By this I mean more like our Australopithicine ancestors-- that is retaining more archaic traits. Diamond mentions the well known fact that the Ainu were often thought of as an archaic Caucasian population.(The Ainu were isolated in Japan starting 13000 years ago.) The fact of an ancient split between Caucasoids and Mongoloids and then a change in the Mongoloids to a more Mongoloid appearance is also supported by finds of Caucasoid looking skeletons among Paleo-Indians. These Indians were simply groups who crossed the Bering Straits (or land bridge) close to the time of the split. As for Ainu being isolated and less evolved. Diamond points out that they are hairier and have large brow ridges. Rushton points out that they retain more of the archaic apocrine (or sex smell) glands. Ainu also have longer forearms, a more simian like trait. Koreans have no apocrine glands, but Japanese who (after crossing from Korea) mixed a little bit with the Jomon (Ainu) people have a small percentage of people who have a body odor problem. The Jomon people, just like the Australian Aborigines, were isolated from a large variety of new genes in Eurasia and so evolved less or maintained a more Homo Erectus like morphology compared to their continental neighbors.

It was okay, it was the first time I'd ever seen Kouhaku and I agree with what others have said: it's actually pretty boring.
There were some good performances like Namie Amuro's SO CRAZY (even though she was a bit shaky vocally) and TOKIO's Ambitious Japan. I wasn't really impressed with the performances from Mika Nakashima or w-inds. EXILE's was actually sort of entertaining just because the English is so bad in that song they sang.
Rina Aiuchi did well, I liked the set. Mai K's performance was okay, I was disappointed that she sang in Kyoto instead of being the concert hall. SMAP's performance of Sekai was pretty awful, they were even more off-key than usual. I have a lot of performances of that song and this one was is by far the worst.
Enka performances last year *were* really good. For me, the best performance last year was the trio of Natsukawa Rimi, Moriyama Ryoko, and BEGIN singing "Nada Sou Sou" Ah~ such a nice song, such a nice combination... ^_^
last year's kouhaku wasn't very good... I didn't watch most of it because most of it wasn't appealing for me.
Anyway, it was cool that yuzu performed a medley on kouhaku (it was their first appearance on kouhaku). I watched ZONE too, always nice to see the girls (Takayo was leaving the group)... And I got to know Moriyama Naotarou...
Kouhaku is pretty much the same every year the way I see it and it doesn't really matter which team "wins"... but I saw it live and I can tell you why the white team won by so much... the red team was soooo BORING~!!! The white team manager was able to put aside the idea of performing by seniority by the red team obviously couldn't. For proof:
Red team ended with TENNOU YOSHIMI White team ended with SMAP
Kouhaku isn't decided by popularity or sales. 1. Kouhaku is NOWHERE near as popular as it was twenty years ago 2. Nobody knows EXACTLY how they pick 3. BUT it's rumored that there are a lot of "politics" involved 4. People who perform once in Kouhaku usually continue performing there 5. It's not supposed to be a huge deal with young people so I don't understand the huge discussion here 6. There are a lot of shows on "how they pick Kouhaku artists" that go on a little before Kouhaku and they're mega-boring.
I like Kouhaku, not because the of the lives or anything, but because of the atmosphere. It's New Year's Eve, and there's no commercials, and you're sitting in front of the TV with your family because it's the only music show that you can watch with your parents.
Shizuka is ok, but I find myself loving Watanabe Minayo and Kawai Sonoko too. Can't forget Utsumi Kazuko too!
About Hikaru Genji, they're awesome, aren't they!? I have about 6 or so files from them (video). My favorite songs are 100% Yuki, Garasu no Jidai, and Winning Run! I own two of thier CD's (Dream Passport and Victory). The video you have, is it the one where they strip? (That part always freaks me out, they send the girls into a frenzy)!
I'm trying to get my hands on a Drama called Happy Mania and one of the members from Hikaru Genji (last name is Moroboshi or something similar) is in it!!! )

TOKYO, Japan (AP) -- Japan's navy went on alert Wednesday after an unidentified submarine made a brief incursion into the country's southern waters near Okinawa.
Tokyo is trying to determine the origin of the vessel.
The submarine left Japanese waters shortly after it was spotted and a reconnaissance aircraft and destroyer were monitoring its movements, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said.
"It's regrettable," Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi told reporters. "It's certainly not a good thing that a submarine of unknown national origin enters our territorial waters."
If the submarine's nationality is identified, Japan will take "necessary steps," Hosada said, without elaborating.
Japan's public broadcaster NHK said defense officials were investigating a possible link between the sub sighting and Chinese military vessels detected recently in Japan's southern waters.
avalon I remember one Korean media have said all asians are the descendant of Korea. I remember one Korean have said English is improved indirectly from Korean language. I remember a professor of a Korean University have said my home country, Taiwan, was the colony of Kogryo in the ancient time. Well, if they think so, why can't they prove it? And I like to ask them that if they hate Japan so much, then why dont they break down the aproximately 3000 schools built by Japanese? Why are they still using the bridges, buildings, and other constructions built by Japanese. In fact, those constructions built from taxes on Japanese people. But I guess koreans never be tought about it. What if Russians occupy the Korean Penisula instead of Japan? Would they have steped the same way as Eastern Europe? Do Koreans know how the Ukiranians treated during WWII? Well, i can easily imagine that Koreans would hate me now.
Reliever Mike Timlin, the last player introduced before Kim, was upset. "I was standing right next to him. I was personally embarrassed," said Timlin, who pitched three perfect innings. "He's a man. The first time, in mid-October, the assailants stalked but failed to capture two girls at Gonzaga University, near downtown. Ball's interest in Japanese culture was widely known. He traveled to Osaka, Japan, in 1997 as a student. SPEX members said he had a collection of Japanese bondage videos, and was expert in Japanese rope-tying techniques. Police found Japanese-language books at his home.

Meanwhile, back in the US, Ted Koppel interviewed four "experts" on Nightline ? a Korean Japan-hater, a Chinese Japan-hater, an American Japan-hater, and a self-hating Japanese from the Asahi Shimbun (where else?). All concurred that Japan should have marked this anniversary by groveling at the feet of "the international community," and that its failure to do so was evidence of a deep -seated evil. Perhaps, they agreed, instead of being allowed to retain their Emperor, the Japanese should have been subjected to the same single-minded indoctrination and extended period of self-abasement demanded of Germany.
What was nauseating about that Nightline show trial wasn't so much the sheer hatred of all things Japanese exuded by Koppel's guests, but the boring unanimity of the "discussion." As Iris Chang, author of The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten [sic!] Holocaust, reiterated the Chinese Communist Party line that a revived Japanese "militarism" is "denying history" and represents an implied threat to China, I was reminded of the yip-yapping of a slightly deranged dog, slavering and baring its yellow fangs. http://www.antiwar.com/justin/j081701.html
Woman advocates for Korean animals http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/news/state/10179568.htm?1c Kyenan Kum has spent the past 15 years working to keep dogs in her native South Korea from being tortured and turned into soup. Kum's efforts could help save an estimated 2 million dogs and cats each year that are maimed, beaten, whipped, electrocuted, torched, caged and cramped all the result of mythical beliefs that torturing animals produces enzymes that provide health benefits.
Kum saw relatives beaten by their husbands. She saw uneducated women. She wanted no part of that. "Women were second-class citizens," she said, recalling a time 30 years ago. "I didn't know why I had to wash my brother's socks. I had my own socks to wash. I didn't want to be mistreated. I had to get out of that country." She escaped the first chance she got, marrying an American in 1970 and moving to Wisconsin. They soon divorced, and in 1978, Kum found her way to the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, the city where she has lived ever since. there is still an underground industry of animal vendors who boil cats to make anti-arthritis potions, she said. And the estimated 5,000 dog soup restaurants in Korea are proof to Kum that the government doesn't take animal abuse seriously.
According to the press release, on November 3 Kamchatka’s border guards spotted five South Korean ships in the Bering Sea and ordered them to stop for inspection. The ships did not obey the Russian patrol vessel and were detained only after 11-hour chase.
The inspection of the ships revealed that fishing equipment did not meet technical requirements of Russian-Korean agreements. Russian border guards also found traces of non-registered pollack that was thrown to the sea. http://vn.vladnews.ru/News/upd12_2.HTM

why is it that so much of korean music is a copy of other people's work????? like for example HOT copied " yul mah chuh" from rage against the machine.....they didn't even use it as a refrence but they had the nerve to flat out copy the whole damn song...are they fuckin stupid???? and they copied their dance moves from some japanese dance group...i saw it and it was all the same....oh country kko kko totally copied one of their slow songs dont remember the title but i remember thinking wow this song's good and going to my friends house and hearing the exact same song in english by Diana King "tenderness". Also seo taiji copied cypress Hill insane in the membrane for comeback home and that new yang hyun sok's song sounds an awful lot like usher....they are just few of the examples of korean singers just copying everyone!! what is their problem??? is it really that difficult to come up with their own ideas??? i mean when they copy...they copy like the whole damn song they dont even try to cover the fact they copied!! its soooo stupid!!! i almost feel that if i listen to a korean song and i like it, i will just assume that they copied it!! anyways those are my thoughts...reply back with yours!

We are the creation of human kind. We invented civilization and foundation of mathmatics!!!! We started arithmatics and basicgeometry which gave foundation to build buildings and houses. We showed Japs how to build a castles and make alphabets. We are the first people to come out with concept of cannons and gun and battle ships. We created Kimchi and Go chu jang. I am getting so pissed that whites, blacks and chinks dont appreciate out accomplishments. We Koreans are the master race and future of this world. Lets not forget that. When I become a president of Korea I will make Korea the best and only country in the world.
Why are the Coreans the only ones with self-confidence and pride?
its cuz you other Asian races in the U.S have been conditioned. Common chinese and japanese came over for menial labor, and did a poor job in creating positive stereotypes that other Asian races would later have to endure. You致e had decades and decades of the white man keeping you down and telling you what a second class citizen you all are, and believing it. On the other hand, only two boatloads of Corean university students fled to Hawaii when the japs invaded, to keep the Corean identity alive. Coreans didn稚 come over here again until after the end of the Korean war. That's why we still have a confident, macho, albeit arrogant attititude towards everything. Historically most Coreans in the states are made up of first or second generation upper class citizens, while other Asians in the U.S are made up several generations of the non-warrior peasant/farmer class. If you take all these things into account, you値l begin to understand why we think so differently. Sumyunguy Saturday, December 28, 2002 at 00:44:32 (PST) [67.218.95.118]
in reply to eugene jeong's dissertation about koreans being a superior asian race. 1st of all, koreans (north and south) are all from china. it may be sad to you, but it is quite true and any korean history source will tell you so. in addition, it is obvious from the fact that the classic korean characters are chinese. 2nd of all, i have not heard anyone say that koreans are the most beautiful, and about 98% of my friends are korean. i also live in an asian-dominated community which is predominantly korean. my closest friends (guys and girls alike) do think that koreans are good looking. i agree, but no one denies that almost 90% of the girls have had, at least, 1 cosmetic surgery procedure perfromed on them. i know more than a handful of my friends have already had some stuff done, and we're not even out of college yet.
it's nice to have pride for your own race, but it begins to get sad when you diss others, as you seem to with the chinese. it is wrong to base your opinions on stereotypes and places like the people who are found in chinatown or something. hong kong and taiwan are far more advanced than korea and america, and walk beside japan. also, the main cities of china are the some of the most affluent in the world (even after curreny changes). be careful what you say... asianbelle Saturday, December 28, 2002 at 20:09:18 (PST) [66.108.254.38]

Korean-American Sentenced As NK Agent A 60 year-old Korean American man named Yai Joung-woong (American name: John) was sentenced Monday to two years in prison at a federal court for working as a secret agent for North Korea. He was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2003.
According to the Associated Press (AP), federal prosecutors alleged that Yai secretly worked for North Korea and sent reports to Pyongyang in January 2003 through coded faxes and e-mails. Yai, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in South Korea, also pleaded guilty to three charges for failing to report to the customs office that he was carrying more than US$10,000 when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport from a trip to Switzerland in April 2000. http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200411/200411160034.html
FIFA published a DVD that critically undermined the myth of the Korean soccer team`s advancement into the semifinals. FIFA selected the top 10 wrong referee decisions in the 100-year history of the World Cup in its recently released DVD publication, "FIFA Fever," (Picture, 2 DVDs). However, four out of 10 cases are related to the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in Korea and Japan.
According to the DVD publication, the top six to nine listings are all linked to matches involving the Korean team. The sixth is an offsides call on an overtime goal by Damiano Tommasi in a Korea versus Italy match. Also, it occurred at the same match where Francesco Totti`s was ejected after receiving a second yellow card for a simulation action when he went down after being hit by a defensive man in the box while driving. The eighth is a defensive foul call when Fernando Morientes made a goal with a header. The ninth is disallowing Morientes header, which he successfully capitalized on Joaquin Sanchez`s cross pass, on a questionable call that ruled the ball had crossed the end line. That also occurred at the same match. http://english.donga.com/srv/service.php3?biid=2004110353778

In a new ABCNEWS.com poll, 35 percent of the public name China as the most threatening nation to peace, 22 points ahead of second-place finisher Iraq. Russia and the United States hold the next two slots with 10 percent and 8 percent, respectively. And rounding out the top five is Iran, at 5 percent. As the global landscape has changed, so has the list. These results are markedly different from 10 years ago, the last time this question was asked. Then, Russia placed first, Iraq came in a close second, and China was named by just one in 10 people. And back in 1981, in the midst of the Cold War, the Soviet Union went unchallenged ? it was named by a whopping 72 percent.

Forger created fake wives to obtain visas to the U.S. November 23, 2004 ㅡ Police said yesterday they have seized evidence indicating that as many as 250 single Korean women have illegally entered the United States by representing themselves as the wives of well-to-do employees at some of Korea's major corporations. Records confiscated from "visa brokers" in Seoul turned up documents that showed hundreds of U.S. visa applications had been forged. In general, the U.S. Consulate in Seoul refuses to issue visas to young, unmarried women who do not have strong family ties in Korea or who cannot demonstrate that they have significant financial resources. According to the police, Mr. Yang worked with two accomplices, only identified as Mr. Kim and Sally. Beginning in January 2001, the three suspects in the case placed advertisements in Korean-language newspapers in Los Angeles and on Internet sites, claiming that young women could earn high incomes working as barmaids and cosmetologists. The brokers charged the women up to 8 million won ($7,500). Police estimated their total earnings at about 2 billion won. The seized records showed that 320 customers had sought the brokers' help, with 250 having already left the country. An officer working on the case said, "For those applicants rejected by the United States, the brokers arranged trips to Canada and then smuggled them into the United States." http://joongangdaily.joins.com/200411/22/200411222207040909900090409041.html

North Korea conducted lethal chemical experiments on humans until 2002 as part of a programme to develop weapons of mass destruction, a human rights group said yesterday, quoting former scientists from the communist state.
South Korea is no longer the sexual paradise for American troops it once was. For half a century, duty in South Korea was officially considered a hardship tour. The one bright spot was the inexpensive and widely available prostitution. This was a dirty little secret, but troops who ended up in South Korea quickly found out about it, and enthusiastically enjoyed themselves. No more. For the last two months, the South Korean government has been cracking down on prostitutes, arresting over 5,000. The U.S. military has declared 800 bars and brothels off limits and all but outlawed access to prostitutes for American troops. Over 400 troops have been arrested and punished for patronizing prostitutes. http://www.strategypage.com/dls/articles/2004111923.asp

意図的にmisleadingしてる電波記事が有るぞ。 抗議汁! Japan murder fuels false anti-China By J Sean Curtin A Chinese student, who did not wish to be named, told Asia Times Online, "This is a truly terrible crime. I feel so sad for the little children, but why are the newspapers and TV just concentrating on the nationality of the killers? Japanese people have committed crimes like this in the past. Chinese people are just as shocked by what happened, but the media [seem] to be blaming us for it." Right-wing politicians, such as Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara, are exploiting this case and other crimes committed by foreigners, generating anti-Chinese sentiment and xenophobia. Alarmingly, many ordinary Japanese believe Chinese and other foreign residents are largely responsible for recently rising crime rates, even though police statistics clearly show that foreign criminals account for only a minute fraction of all crimes. ★★William Stonehill, a foreign businessman and long-term Tokyo resident, summed up the feeling of many foreign citizens: "The number of crimes committed by foreigners is microscopic, and the whole notion of a foreign crime wave is an exaggeration of the Japanese government." おかしな比較の仕方してるし、凶悪犯罪の割合なら多い筈だし、人口がたった1%しか居ない割には、犯罪を犯す外国人は多いんじゃないのか? 1%の中の50%以上は犯罪者じゃないのか? Over the past two decades, crimes committed by foreigners have never exceeded about 4% of all crime in Japan, and typically the yearly average has been between 2% and 3%. Foreigners currently make up just over 1% of Japan's total population, so they are only slightly over-represented in the figures. http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Japan/FK13Dh01.html

U.S. Expels Visiting Chinese Journalists After Reports They Applauded Terror Strikes
WASHINGTON, Sep 17, 2001 -- (AFP) The United States has expelled a group of visiting Chinese journalists, some of whom reportedly applauded at this week's terrorist strikes in New York and Washington, State Department officials said Saturday.
"On September 14, we curtailed the visit of a group from China under the International Visitor Program," the officia l said. "Under the current circumstances, it was decided not to continue the tour."
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, declined to elaborate on the circumstances of the group's expulsion, but others confirmed there had been reports that some of the journalists had applauded and cheered when they saw television footage of hijacked planes slamming into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
It was not immediately clear where the alleged incident occurred, but the group, which was being hosted by the New York-based Institute of International Education, had been scheduled to visit that city this week, the official said.
The 14 journalists from various local television stations around China, were on a 28-day study tour funded by he State Department's International Visitor Program which brings foreign professionals to the United States to meet their U.S. colleagues.
The official said the status of all other similar tours now underway were being reviewed "on a case-by-case basis."
The 40-year-old International Visitor Program has brought more than 186 current and former heads of state and more than 1,500 senior foreign government officials to the United States since it was founded, according to the State Department.
...at the time, Japanese were no better than the Nazis : - 20 millions Chinese died; the same amount in Russia, caused by the war with Germany 日本人に中国人が2000万人殺された - unknown, untold horrors : for instance 1 to 3 millions northern Indochinese died of hunger, due to lack of rice (all was for the Japanese troops) - even now, most Japanese either don't know or don't want to know their past crimes. And many are whitewashing their past (like Shintaro ISHIHARA, the mayor of Tokyo; or those cited)
...but the same goes for actual crimes and criminels : for instance, the Bushists perpetrating horrors in Iraq, in an illegal and horrendous neo-colonialist war : 100 000 innocent iraqi civilians slained so far by the US army !!!
金の為には何でもする朝鮮人 http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/la-me-orphan28nov28,1,6479167.story Two men in dark suits waited. One, a chauffeur, pried the boy from her. Mee Yeon gave him the bag. Dong Koo screamed for his mother. He began to weep. He cried until he fell asleep in a limousine taking him to his father's mansion in Seoul. "I felt as if my heart was being ripped apart," Mee Yeon said. Then she went to a lawyer's office and collected a check for $68,000. Dong Koo's father was Won Man Lee, a leading Korean industrialist, adoption records show. He founded Kolon Industries Inc., a nylon manufacturer that grew into a conglomerate with annual sales of more than $1 billion. Won Man Lee met Mee Yeon in 1977, when she was a hostess at a yo-jung, the Korean equivalent of a Japanese geisha house. He was 72 and married. She was 18 — slender with long, dark hair and a childlike vulnerability. She became his mistress. Despite their intimacy, she called him "The Chairman." He provided an apartment for her in an exclusive neighborhood of Seoul. Servants brought whatever she desired. In return, she was expected to wear hanbok, the traditional Korean costume, a bell-shaped dress with petticoats and bloomers. She was also expected to be available to the Chairman at his whim. "I didn't start seeing the Chairman because I loved him," Mee Yeon said. "He was like a father figure to me; he just adored me all the time." The Chairman suffered a stroke in 1985, when the boy was 7. The assistant brought Dong Koo to the offices of Holt Children's Services in Seoul, which started Korean adoptions in the mid-1950s. Dong Koo remembers the assistant handing him a black leather bag and saying goodbye. In her early 30s, Mee Yeon became the mistress of a Korean-Japanese businessman.
Illegal Foreign Workers Continue Protest Against Deportation
When news got out that the Korean government will launch widespread crackdown on foreign workers who had overstayed their visas, about 150 foreign workers gathered at the Myeongdong Cathedral in downtown Seoul to protest against the government. That was Nov. 15 last year, and even today, about 30 migrant workers are still continuing their protest. "The foreigners are basically saying 'Let us stay.' They want the Korean government to stop its crackdown on migrant workers who have overstayed their visas here and to be more flexible out of respect for human rights." From the 1980s through the 1990s, the number of foreign workers in Korea surged as factories grew, while more Koreans began avoiding manufacturing jobs.
According to the Justice Ministry, currently, around 40 percent of the total 400,000 foreign workers here are residing in Korea illegally. While the government is trying to deport illegal foreign workers, the workers say they can't leave because they still have not received salaries or they haven't made enough money to go back home.
