このスレは私が乗っ取りました。

My encounter with the green banana started in Brazil.
My old jeep was struggling up a steep mountain
when the radiator began to leak. The over-heated engine
forced me to stop at the next village.

緑のバナナとの思いがけない遭遇がブラジルではじまった。
私の古いジープは険しい山を上ろうと奮闘していたが、ラジエターが
不足しはじめた。エンジンがオーバーヒートし、次の村で止まらざるおえなかった。

There were only a few houses and one small store.
People came to look at my steaming jeep.
"That's easy to fix," said one man. He sent a boy
running for some green banana

少数の民家とひとつの小さい店舗しかなかった。
人々が私の蒸気を立てている車を見にきた。
「直すのは簡単だ」と一人の男はいった。
彼は緑のバナナをもって走る少年を差し向けた。

He patted me on the shoulder, and told me not to worry.
"Green bananas," he smiled. Everyone agreed.

彼は私の肩を軽くたたき、心配しなくてよいといった。
「緑のバナナ」と彼は笑い。みんなもうなづいた。

We talked casually while I considered what the green bananas were for.
Since asking questions would show my ignorance, I changed the subject
and asked about the area. Huge rocks rose up all around us.
"Do you see that tall one right over there"asked the man,
pointing to one tall dark rock. "That rock marks the center of the world"

私たちは何気なく話していたが、一方私は緑のバナナは何のためにあるのか考えていた。
質問をすることは私の無知をさらけだすために、私は話題を変え、地域について尋ねた。
大きな岩が私の周りに立ちはだかっていた。
「ちょうどそこにある右の高いやつが見えるか？」とたずねて、ひとつの高い黒い岩を
指差した。「その岩は世界の中心を示すんだよ」

【問題】
若い男は、私の夫と弟の姿を見ると、恐怖の悲鳴をあげ家から飛び出していった。
どうしたのかしら？

【正解】
私にはベラという娘がいる。若い男は神経衰弱気味で、転地療養のため私の家に着いたばかりだった。
そのとき私はちょうど手が離せなかったので、娘のベラに男の相手をさせた。
ベラは男に、私の夫と弟は不慮の事故を遂げてとうに亡くなっており、それ以来私は精神に異常をきたしたとウソをついていたらしい。
だから夫と弟が現れたとき、若い男は幽霊だと思って恐怖の悲鳴をあげ飛び出していったのだ。
またあの娘ったら、でまかせのウソをついて。今日という今日はきつくおしおきをしてやらなきゃ！

I looked to see if he was joking, but his face was serious.
He looked at me carefully to be sure I understood him.
"The center of the world" I repeated.
He nodded. "The exact center. Everyone around here knows it."

冗談をいっているんではないかとみたが、しかし、彼の顔は真剣だった。
彼は私が理解したか確認するように注意深く私をみた。
「世界の中心」私は繰り返した。

At that moment the boy returned with the green bananas.
The man sliced one in half and pressed the cut end against the radiator jacket.
The banana melted into a glue against the hot metal, stopping the lacks.

Everyone laughed at my surprise.
They refilled my radiator and gave me extra bananas to take along.
An hour later, my radiator and I reached our destination.
The local mechanic smiled : "Who taught you about the green banana?"

みんなは私の驚きに対して笑った。
彼らはラジエーターを詰め替え、私にあまったバナナを携帯用にくれた。
一時間後、私のラジエータと私は目的地に到着した。

I told him the name of the village.
He asked me if I had seen the rock marking the center of the world.
"My grandfather came from there" he said. "It's the exact center.
Everyone around here has always known about it."

「私の祖父はそこから来たんだ」彼は言った。そして続けた。

I had never paid any attention before to the green banana.
I had regarded it as a fruit whose time had not yet come.
But as I thought about it more, I realized that the green banana had been there all along.
The people in that village had known about it for years.
This chance encounter showed me the special genius of those people,
and the special potential of the green banana.

私は緑のバナナの面前で決して注意を払うことがなかった。
私はそれをまだ成熟していないフルーツとしてみなしていた。
しかし私はそれについてもっと考えてみるにつれて、私は緑のバナナは絶え間なく

It took me a while to see the important of the rock marking the center of the world.
I had doubted them at first, but gradually I realized that they had an important belif
and understanding of the world.
We think of the center as that special place where things mean much to us.
It is a place where we ourselves have both identity and meaning - in our family, school,
town, and local region.

世界の中心を示す岩の重要性を理解するにに少々時間がかかった。
私は最初、それらに疑念を抱いた、しかし、段々と私はそれらが世界の偉大な信仰や知力をもつことを
実感した。
私はその中心が私たちにとって深い意味をもつ特別な場所であると考える。
それは私たち自身がアイデンティティと意義の両方（家族、学校、町、地域における）をもちうる場所である。

What I gradually learned was that every place has special meaning for the people who live there.
Every place represents the center of the world.
The cultures of the world are full of unexpected green bananas with special value and meaning.
They have been there for ages, ripening slowly, perhaps waiting patiently for people to
come along to encounter them.
In fact, a green banana is waiting for all of us who leave our own centers of the world
in order to experience other places.

私は段々とすべての場所はそこに住む人々にとって特別な意味をもつこと理解しだした。
世界の文化は特別な価値と意義をもつ予期せぬ緑のバナナで一杯である。
それらは長い間、ゆっくりと成熟しながら、たまに辛抱強く人々が出会うためにやってくるのを待ちながら、
そこに存在しているのである。
事実、緑のバナナは他の場所を経験するために私たち自身の世界の中心に到達する私たち全員を待っている。

People have probably dreamed of flying like birds since the begining of time.
Strangely enough,musclepowered flight became possible only after the investion
of the jet engine and rocketships to the moon.
Perhaps you have seen the annual Japanese International Birdman Rally
held every year at Lake Biwa which tests sustained muscle-powered flight.
The sight of the planes crashing down into the water reminds us of limits of human in flight.

太鼓の昔から人々はおそらく鳥のように空を飛ぶことにあこがれていたのだろう。
十分すぎるほど、ジェットエンジンや月への到着の後はじめて、人力飛行が
可能となった。
おそらくあなたは毎年琵琶湖で開かれる年一度の人力飛行の持久力を競う日本国際鳥人間大会
をみたことがあるだろう。
水へ大きな音を立てて落ちる飛行機の映像に飛行での人間の限界を私たちにおもいしらしめたであろう。

Technology can sometimes do what the physical limitations of the human body cannot.
As an airplane flies, the drag, or air resistans, grows bigger as the speed increasees.
After the speed passes a certain point, the drag is so great that no human could
possibly make the machine fly.
Therefore, for muscle-powered flight, the plane must be able to fly very slowly.
Also, in order for the plane to fly so slowly its winds need to be long and wide.

テクノロジーは時に生理的限界のために人間がどうしてもできないことをやってのける。
飛行機が飛ぶとき、空気による抵抗はスピードが増すにつれて大きくなる。
スピードがある点を通過した後、空気抵抗は非常に大きいためにその飛行機を飛ばせる人間は
おそらくいないであろう。
