>>962 It's one thing to have confidence, but it is stupid to pretend you know what you're talking about when you really don't! Have the courage to admit the truth: you don't know what static electricity in fabric really is. Maybe you haven't experienced a nylon or polyester dress clinging to pantyhose. That's why women wear a "slip" and God help you if the slip is polyester/rayon too! Maybe you don't use an electric clothes dryer? Maybe you don't walk over fuzzy carpeting in woolen socks? Maybe you've never rubbed a balloon on your hair? If you had ever done any of these things, you'd know what static is.

>> Mistake of Eijiro: >> 1. "put you in an awkward position" means to be put in a painful >> situation, and the appearance of a skirt does not apply. >> 2. "static" is translated as static electricity. It may be right >> for specific situations, but it is not right for a dictionary's >> sample usage.
>> Conclusion: correct translation >> A person who causes trouble will be put in a difficult situation.
Don't be cocky. How did you get this conclusion? "Static can put you in an awkward position" does not indicate a person specifically. The term static is first scientific, used for electricity or radio interference, and second evolved into colloquial use for back talk, interference, or criticism. The sentence should make it clear if the meaning is the secondary, colloquial expression. As to the argument that this colloquial expression is primary, you have it backwards.
For 1) an awkward position is not the same as a painful situation, true, but "awkward" is more broad and versatile. It includes embarrassment. There is nothing wrong with the skirt situation.
For 2) if the sentence is not clearly a colloquial expression meaning social interference or criticism, then by default it is understood as static electricity or radio-wave interference.
No matter what you write here, if the conclusion is wrong, you are spreading false information. What you need is a reality check. I recommend to ask English-speaking persons their opinions, which is why I translated your comments into English. Show them, and see who is right.
