Well, I became an translator by just looking for jobs. I became an instructor at my university by looking around and having a bit of experience with teaching English. It's never been very hard for me to find a job.
>>39 Hey, that's really great. A friend of mind is also going to Japan (Yokaichi or something, not sure) very soon through JET program. Apparently, she will be teaching English at some middle school and also have some private English lessons for elderly people. I was just wondering how hard it is to obtain a working visa in Japan. What would you say the easiest way to get one?
>>41 Well, there are a few ways to get one. They have a cultural visa for people who are studying Japanese arts (for at least 3 months). Also a large company can sponsor a visa for you for 1 year. After you arrive, you can also work part time for 3 different jobs, and if you make over 250000 yen a month, you can get another seperate visa for that. The hard thing about working for Jet is that if you quit, they cancel your visa and send you back. If you quit a big company like NOVA or something, they CAN NOT cancel. When people ask me how to get here, I always tell them that because finding a good teaching position you like is the most rewarding thing. Working blindly for NOVA or GEOS is not rewarding, and luckly I've never had to work for a big company.
Jet contracts can be renewed up to three times (3 years)
When I say finding a good teaching position, I mean that the big 4 (ECC, NOVA, AEON, and GEOS) are good choices but you might not wanna stay there. Good teaching positions can be found if you have taught more than 6 months or so. Look for out-servicing positions, ones that 'rent' you out to different cram-schools and such. Also medium sized schools are a good bet, but they usually will only look for people inside Japan. My suggestion is that you go for a big company, hang in there for 6 months, get training, and then start interviewing for a job after then. If you are able to find a good school (99%), take the job and renew your visa while getting training there. After about a year, start really digging for a good job (a private school, part time instructor at a college, etc.) The big thing is it is IMPERATIVE to never give up looking, but observe the immigration rules. If you do not you might find yourself banned from Japan for 5 years.
>>49 Again, thank you very much. I really appreciate it.
I guess "Be patient and look out for a better position" is the key to sucees there. I knew breaking the immigration rules would always get you in big trouble in every single country.
P.S. If you are married to a Japanese, will you be able to get a "green card", like in the U.S.??
Yes, you will. The marriage visa is primarily 1 year, then 3, 5, then non-expiring, I believe. I am married to a wonderful woman, and I currently hold a 3 year visa. Soon we'll work on her green card.
>>89>>90 Thunderbird is a graduate school only institution, specializing in international management. Despite its narrow specialization, it's ranked in the 31-50 range in BW's MBA ranking. Other well-known schools in this caterogy includes: Arizona State, Georgia Tech, Illinois-UC, Minnesota, Rice, Washington, Wisconsin-Madison. It had 1,100 students in the full-time MBA program (no part-time on-campus program) Honeywell, Intel, Motorola, American Express, and General Motors have been sending a good number of their mid-level management employees to Thunderbird's Executive MBA program for years.
Fordham offers a much broader MBA program but ranked much lower in the same BW MBA ranking report. It has a huge part-time student population (1010 part-time vs. 362 full-time in 2002). Almost half of those students focus on finance, quite understandable because of its location.
