We Japanese see the fact that Chinese goverment that has researched enomous natural gas field at the East China Sea has started building platforms for mining at the position facing the borderline of Japan. Our newspaper took the photos of them by air. We think we have our share. Because there must be most part of gas resources on Japan side. We send our ships for research it but they gave us much troubles. So we can't stop they are going to take our share away. (`・ω・´)

>>41 > pointing like という使い方ですが、この like は at the point という > 意味なのでしょうか?それとも、about みたいな意味なのでしょうか? > (´・ω・`)イジイジ > こんな文章に出てきました。↓ > T. Why is the man to whom the hand is pointing like the base of the machine? > L. Because he gives support to the other men in the higher positions.
前置詞付き関係代名詞ですな。point toのtoが関係詞にくっついて前置されているのです。 T. Why is the man [to whom the hand is pointing] like the base of the machine?
The loss of a button is not very important. (ボタンが取れてなくなったのはたいした問題じゃない。) She was buttoning her coat as she went out. (外出するので彼女は自分のコートにボタンを付けていた。) Put your finger on the button of the electric bell.
Why is the man pointing at/around the base of the machine?"のようになるはず。 すると、L.の"Because he gives support to the other men in higher positions."は 「上方にいる人たちが作業しやすいように指示を出すためです」という解釈になります。
文脈から考えて、原文を引用しそこねているとしか思えませんが。
"Why is the man to whom the hand is pointing like the base of the machine?" では "Why is the man like the base of the machine?(何で、この人は機械の基部みたいな姿勢を取ってるの?)" という文が大元にあって、関係節"to whom the hand is pointing(指差し印が指している〜)"を "the man"の修飾節としてくっつけたものとしか解析できませんよ・・・

On 28 this month it was revealed by an airplane picture that China, continuing an oil field research in the East China Sea so far, had set out building a new oil mining facility on the closest boarder to Japan. Naturally Japan should have the right to share the precious natural resources with china according to the ratio of the oil stock if the oil was stocked over the Japanese area. Unfortunately it is not certain right now with little concrete evidence for Japan to claim that, and China would have the high possibilities to dominate this oil right. To make this case more complicated, one of each foreign oil companies in the U.S, the Britain and Holland has been involved in mining. This oil finding might cause the new diplomatic friction between the two giants in Asia.

Xxl is a free graphical spreadsheet developed at the University of Nice for Unix platforms. Xxl is written in STk and is based on the tkTable widget. Xxl is designed to be simple, easy to use and user friendly. The aim of xxl is not to compete with commercial spreadsheets. The latter are often too complex for novices and provides too much functionnalities for current usages. This last version of xxl provides a really fonctionnal spreadsheet for small or middle-size sheets. The model it defines is similar to that of all present-day spreadsheets. However, this model is limited and has to be entirely revisited. Xxl should be a stable experimental platform for future studies, in order to propose a reflexion and to define tools for a new spreadsheet generation, more simple and secure to use.

Men and Women -To some visitors from cultures in which women are not as active as in the United States, the fact that an American woman will -ingly goes with a man may seem to suggest that she is "his for the asking." This is not true, and it is important to realize this from the start. Although American social customs are more informal than those of many other countries, the American social customs are more informal than those of many other countries, the American view of sex is similar to that of people in other lands. Sex is certainly discussed more openly in the United States than it was in the past, but the decision to have sexual relations remains nevertheless a personal and individual one for both the man and the women to decide.
Finding the Rest Room -Some countries have public rest rooms that are plainly in view on city streets or in small buildings that are clearly marked. The United States does not.

Time Zones -Another way to grasp the vastness of America is to learn the time changes that occur as one moves across the land. There are four different time zones between the East and West Coasts. ( omitted ) There are additional time zones for Alaska and Hawaii, outside the continental United States.
Climate -Because of this great difference in temparatures from one season to another, it is necessary to have a variety of clothes of different weights if you plan to remain in America for several months.
Clothing -Although you will undoubtedly see a great variety of clothing styles in the United States, chiefly among the young, people in the South and Mid-West tend to dress more formally than people on either the West or East Coasts.

Traveling on Foot -You should not cross the street unless there is a green traffic light facing in the direction you plan to cross. In small towns, these rules may not be followed as closely, because the traffic is usually not so heavy.
Traveling by Bus -Requiring people to have the exact change thus makes the driver's job easier and provide speedier service for all passengers.
Traveling by Taxi -Telephoning in advance for a taxi is possible (telephone numbers can be found in the local telephone book), but you may find it easier, quicker, and less expensive to stop them on the street or find them at taxi stands near large hotels, railroad stations or airports. Generally, taxis charge passengers according to the time required for each trip, but there are some cities, for exam- ple, Washington, D.C., where taxis charge according to the zone system.
Renting a Car -If you plan to drive while in the United States, it is suggest- ed that you obtain an international driver's license or permit before leaving your country.

Coins and Paper Money -American money is unlike the money used in many countries, since the bills, or paper money, are all the same color and size regardless of their amount. - 1¢-penny or cent: The coin of smallest value, equal to one-hundredth of a dollar. Five pennies equal one nickel.
Money on Arrival -These buses are much less expensive than taxis, and unless you have many suitcases or are traveling with a large group of people, you will find them very comfortable.
Tipping -You should not tip goverment or customs officials, airline people on the plane or at the ticket counter, people at hotel desks or room clerks and gas station assistants. -The two kinds of tips you probably will be giving most often during your visit will be tips to waiters and waitresses and taxi drivers.

Hotels -Meals are not included as part of the room charge in most hotels in the United States. There are several less expensive hotels in most cities in less centrally located areas of the city. (omitted) Reservations in advance are necessary in most hotels, especially in large cities.
Motels -Because motels are often located outside the center of town, it will probably be inconvenient to stay in a motel unless you have a car or unless the motel is located near public bus or train lines.
Guest Houses -Guest houses were warm and friendly places where you often could have a homecooked meal as well as a clearn room and bath.
Youth Hostels -While hostels may not offer the most comfortable quarters, they are convenient, inexpensive (usually charging less than $5 per person per day), and because they are attractive to traveling students and young people, generally friendly and informal places.
Camp Grounds -Because camping has becom so popular in America in recent years, as it has elsewhere in the world, it is wise to make reservation for a place at a public camp ground, especially if you know it is very popular.

What Do the Rental Words Mean? -When you see "2 1/2 rooms" listed, you cannot be certain what this means. Neither can Americans!
Rental Agreements -If you notice any damages or sections of the apartment in need of repair, ask the owner or his representative to agree in writ- ing that the damages existed before you rented the place.
Public Utilities -Some people prefer electric stoves because, although they are slower to heat, the heat is considered more even. -If you rent a house, you will receive bills each month for the gas and electricity you used during that period.

Hotels -You might find it more interesting to wander along the neerby streets to see if you can find a place to eat that is less ex- pensive and more fun.
Restaurants -The telephone book lists reataurants for each city according to name, area, of the city, or kind of food.
Reservations -Cities are crowded and good restaurants will not hold reservations for more than a short time.
Informal Eating -Quite frequently, drugstores will have a small restaurant where you can also order coffee, tea, or other drinks, and light meals.
Bars -If you prefer your drink at room temperature, be sure to say "no ice."
Hours of Meals -Many restaurants close on Sunday; check the telephone book for the locations and hours of restaurants that are open on Sundays or late at night. -In general, however, Americans dine relatively early; 6:30 P.M. is quite common for dinner.
American Food Habits -Normally, when eating in a private home, it is considered better manners to take whatever is being served and not to ask for some- thing different, unless the hostess gives you a choice.
Ordering Food -When you order coffee, you may be asked "regular?" This means, "Do you want lots of cream in it?" If not, ask for "black" (no cream) or "dark" (meaning a small amount of cream). -In private homes, however, tea is frequently made with loose tea instead of tea bags. -Fried eggs may be cooked "sunny-side up," which means they are fried on one side only, with the yellow, or yoke, of the egg showing. Fried eggs "over" means that they are fried well on both sides, and "over easy" means that they are fried lightly on both sides. -When you are ordering your lunch at a "fast-food" place, do not be surprised if you do not understand the food orders--- neither do many Americans. Mail Service -For ordinary mail within the United States, you should have a supply of required stamps (currently 10¢ for regular mail) plus supply of air letter forms, or airgrams as they are called, for letters outside the United States. If you purchase a large supply in advance, you can avoid standing in line at post office each time you want to mail a letter. -If you want to be sure that an important letter has been received, send it "Registered, with Return Receipt Requested." This must be done at a post office and there is an extra charge for the service.
Telephones -If the person you are calling is out of the office, leave a message with his or her secretary. -However, the visitor may not be accustomed to seeing public telephones outside along the street or road. They have become very popular in America and make it easier than ever to find a public telephone. -If you would like the person you are calling to pay the charges, that is, if the person agrees, tell the operator that you want to make a "collect call." -There are two types of long-distance calls, either "person-to- person" or "station-to-station." Person-to-person is more expen- sive, but you only pay charges from the time you actually begin speaking to the person you ask for. If you are not sure the per- son you are calling will be at home or at the office, you should call person-to-person.
Telegrams and Cables -Both R.C.A and I.T.T. offer two kinds of telegrams that are charged by the word--- "Full Rate Telegrams," (called FR) which are fastest, and Letter Telegrams (LT), which is overnight ser- vice. -Telegrams can be most easily sent by telephone, although they can also be sent by going to an R.C.A., I.T.T. or Western Union office. However, unlike some countries, none of these may be sent from local post offices in the United States. -The names and addresses of the persons sending and receivig the message are not counted as part of the charge within the United States, but are counted in cables going to other countries.
Safety on the Streets -People in all major cities of the world are increasingly con- cerned with the number of crimes that are committed each year. The United States is no different. Every day newspaper reports tell of "crime in the streets." - In general, when moving about a city at night, it is wise to keep to the more traveled and better lighted streets. If you must travel through areas of a city that are considered dangerous or deserted, you should go by bus or taxi rather than on foot. Avoid parkes after dark since they too are likely to be deserted.
If You Become Ill -You may also go to the "Emergency Ward" of the nearest hospital, especially if you require immediate attention attention. If you are seriously hurt and alone, call the telephone operator and she will get help for you. Be sure to give the operator your name and the address of your location.

American Stores -You will find yourself being urged from every page of every newspaper and on practically every television station to buy all kinds of goods that you are actually quite happy without. This constant amount of advertising has caused people to say that America is too materialistic. -If you wish to return your purchase, you should save the papers to prove that you bought the article in that particular store. Another inportant thing to remember when buying articles like radios or cameras is the guarantee. A guarantee is a written agreement that the company will pay for the repair or servicing of the product for a certain amount of time. Since many products are guaranteed by the manufacture, you should follow the instructions you receive. In most cases, you are required to mail a card to the company stating when the article was purchased.
-Most department stores in large cities carry average to better quality products at average to higher prices. -Dime stores specialize in a wide wide variety of inexpensive items and today, prices range from a quater or 50 cents up to several dollars. If you need a small item and don't want to spend very much, the dime store is likely to have just what you are looking for. Because they are so colorful and give such a good idea of what is available, dime stores are often of interest to visitors who find that wandering through them also helps them to learn American names for unfamiliar goods.
Read the Label -In the United States there is a low that requires clothing manufactures to list the material contents of every article of clothing. Although each person must judge the quality, weight, fit, and feel of a piece of clothing for himself before he desides to buy it, you should be sure that if an article is advertised as being wool, for example, the label says that it is wool. Be sure to notice just how much of each kind of material is contained in a piece of clothing. A wool coat is not likely to keep you very warm if it is actually made of only 15 persent wool and 85 percent cotton!

Well, I guess the message of 856/857 would be:
It is insignificant whether the average TOEIC score among new college graduates is above or below 370. The point is that the TOEIC exam seems tailored specifically to Japanese learners of English, and therefore has only questionable effectiveness for measuring one's proficiency in English. There are many ways to boost one's TOEIC score with little effort. For example, a TOEIC preparation textbook will provide you lots of tips on the exam, and thus would allow you to have a head start over some examinees. The STEP (Eiken) exam would better measure one's English proficiency. Even a better way is to take both exams.
Still, it is not entirely clear why >>856/857 says the STEP (Eiken) provides a good measure of one's English proficiency when the exam is intended "exclusively" for native speakers of Japanese, who want to improve their English. And, it is illogical that s/he considers it effective to take "both" TOEIC and STEP when s/he asserts the former is ineffective.

How Americans Spend Their Time -American workers continue to demand shorter and shorter working hours each week. The possibility of a four-day work week is now being seriously considered; some companies are already experimenting with it.
Religions -In large cities, it is possible to find churches for most of major faiths, including Moslem mosques and Hindu or Buddhist temples.
Museums -If your idea of a museum is dusty row of glass cases or rooms full of poorly lit paintings, you will be surprised when you visit some of the museums in the United States.
Bookstores and Libraries -Visitors can learn a lot about a countryand its people by spending a few hours in a bookstore, where people are not only welcomed but encouraged to come in and look, or browse, as it is called. -If you are trying to locate a particular book but do not know how to locate it, or if you are interested in a special subject but do not know which of many to select, ask the librarian.
Theater -Less expensive theater tickets sometimes become available for a play at the end of a long and successful engagement insted of at the beginning.
I'm not sure if my writing style is refined, but there is one thing I always bear in my mind whenever I write in Japanese or in English: logical clarity, that's what counts in practical writing.
I don't wanna disappoint you, but I don't know how to develop a good command of a foreign language quick'n'easy. It just happened that I "had to" expose myself to materials written and spoken in English back in school, and then "had to" read, write and talk in English at work more frequently than I wanted. After 10-odd years elapsed, I found that I was functional in English at not-so-bad a level.
