そこに出てきた詩が気になったので検索してみた。

詩とは言っても、流行りの歌の歌詞は、やっぱりわかりやすいですね。通常の詩人の書いた
詩よりも、はるかに大衆受けするようなないようだもんね。Emily Bronte の詩だったら、

マニアックなスレなのに意外に繁盛してるな。やっぱ恋愛の詩が好きだねみんな。
でもこういうのを好きな人にうまく使うのってなかなか難しいんだよな。
スタンダールやバルザックはいいこと言う。みんながんばろうぜ。

この身も蓋もない言い方はフランス人のそれですわ。

Virginia Woolf の "To the Lighthouse" に、"We perished, each alone" という言葉が出てきた。
第3章の5にも出てくる。気になったので検索してみたら、有名な詩の一節だった。

自然に対する Wordsworth の赤子のごとくみずみずしい感受性には、やっぱりいつも感動する。

これは、歌の歌詞のようです。life とか time が "stand still" するという表現が
ときどき使われているようだけど、英語のネイティブたちはそれを positive なニュアンスで
使っているのか、それとも negative なニュアンスで使っているのかを確かめたくて、
Google 検索しているうちに見つけたものです。この歌詞の中では、"make life stand still"
という表現が出てきます。

この詩を辞書を引きながら読んだけど、なかなか意味がわからなかった。
検索し直したら、いい解説が見つかった。Exitor's note がこの詩の冒頭についていて、
その注釈のおかげで、詩人の言いたいことがよく理解できたような気がする。

The Castaway

[Ed. Note: On New Year's Day of 1773, after hearing a sermon, Cowper became
convinced that God had turned away from him, a belief that remained with him
for the last 27 years of his life. In this poem, the last Cowper ever wrote, he gives
expression to this belief by comparing himself to a sailor with Commodore William
Anson's fleet which had circumnavigated the world during 1741-1744; the sailor
has fallen overboard in a storm, and Cowper imagines his thoughts and feelings
tas he watches the fleet sail on, abandoning him to hopelessness and despair. --Nelson]

"Amazing Grace" という有名な賛美歌を作った人が誰なのかなんて考えもしなかったけど、
あちこちの詩人について調べているうちに、その賛美歌の作者にたどり着いた。
その詩人の生き様って、すごく面白いということを知った。

John Henry Newton (July 24, 1725 – December 21, 1807) was a British sailor and
Anglican clergyman. Starting his career at sea, at a young age, he became involved
with the slave trade for a few years, and was himself enslaved for a period.
After experiencing a religious conversion, he became a minister, hymn-writer, and
later a prominent supporter of the abolition of slavery. He was the author of
many hymns, including "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken
(Wikipedia)

Virginia Woolf の "Between the Acts" を読んでたら、

Hark hark the dogs do bark
The beggars are coming to town

という nursery rhyme が出てきた。その由来や背景を調べようと思って検索したら、
意外なことが書いてあった。nursery rhymes にも深い意味合いがあるんだね。

Virginia Woolf の "The Waves" という小説を読んでいたら、"Far away a bell tolls" という言葉が出てきた。そこには注釈がついていて、John Donne の文章から
来ているとのこと。

それも John Donne の詩ですね。それにしても、1572–1631 という古い時代に書かれた
にしては割とわかりやすい英語ですし、文字面の意味は一応は分かりますが、これに
込められた奥深い意味って、何なんでしょうかね。

Gray, Thomas (1716-71):
His poem, the meditative "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" is probably the most

Gray のその詩って、そんなに良く引用されるんだね。僕自身がこの詩の引用されている

英語の詩をよく理解しようと思ったら、nursery rhymes を一通りは頭にいれた方がいいと、
ずっと前から思ってた。とはいいながら、今さらそういうのを読んだり聞いたりしても、
あんまり面白くない。それを無理して、頭に叩き込もうとしてる。歩きながら聞ける
Mother Goose のビデオが Youtube 上にたくさんあるけど、その中で、私が思うには、
次のものが優れていて、飽きが来ない。

Virginia Woolf の小説を読んでると、有名な詩歌の一節が頻繁に出てくる。
"The Waves" という作品は、この作品そのものが詩みたいなものなので、余計に
詩の一節がよく出てくる。今回は Keats の次の詩が出てきた。辞書を引きながら最後まで
読んで、吹き出してしまった。これは、まさに僕のことを唄ってるじゃないか。

というページで読んでください。この詩の概要は、魅力ある貴婦人の魅力に参って
しまった騎士が、彼女の毒牙にかかり、とりこになってしまい、やつれ果ててしまった
今でずっと、彼女のことを思いながら、思い出の湖畔に住み着いたまま、という哀れな詩。

古い時代の詩である割には、わかりやすいんじゃないかと思います。僕の場合、辞書を
引いて単語の意味さえ調べれば、一応は全体の意味がわかりました。

Shakespeare との同時代人。古い時代の英語だから僕にとって難しいというのは分かる。
でも、ちょっと難しすぎる。これなら Shakespeare の方が分かりやすい。
辞書を引きながらこの長めの詩を3回くらい読んだんだけど、まだ十分には分からない。

Shelley は政治的な詩も書いているという話だけど、こんなにまではっきりと政治色を
前面に出しているとは、今まで知らなかった。

この詩では、「イングランドの人々よ、汗水を垂らして働いてるのに、君たちの生み出した
ものをそのまますべて横取りしてる連中がいるぞ」というような意味のことを強く歌っている。

愛しながら憎むとか甘い苦味といった撞着語法は恋愛詩のお約束。

このように涙も恋愛詩のお約束だが、上の方で訳してる人たちはそれを知らないので、泣き虫と捉えてしまっている。
意中の女性の双眸を星々などで表すのもまた恋愛詩におけるお約束。
こういう古代ギリシア以来続く詩作のお約束の数々を知らないと詩は理解できないのだが、クルツィウスが少々触れているくらいしかない。
しかたなく自分で集成してるので、いずれどこかでお眼にかけよう。

This will make you happy, but it never does for long

So what can we do in the face of all of this madness and chaos?

What is the solution? We can love

Not the love you hear in your favorite song on the radio
I mean real love, true love, boundless love

You can love, love each other
From the moment we wake up to the moment we go to bed

Perform an act of kindness because that is contagious

We can be mindful during every interaction
Planting seeds of goodness
Showing a little more compassion than usual

We can forgive
Because 300 years from now will that grudge you hold against Your friend, your mother, your father have been worth it?

Instead of trying to change others we can change ourselves
We can change our hearts

We have been sold lies
Brainwashed by our leaders and those we trust

To not recognize our brothers and sisters
And to exhibit anger, hatred and cruelty

But once we truly love we will meet anger with sympathy
Hatred with compassion, cruelty with kindness

Love is the most powerful weapon on the face of the Earth
Robert Kennedy once said that

Few will have the greatness to bend history
But each of us can work to change a small portion of events

And in the total of all those act
Will be written in the history of a generation

So yes, the world is coming to an end
And the path towards a new beginning starts within you
