CLIVE BRITTAIN is confident Warrsan can do himself justice when he returns for a crack at the Japan Cup and Hong Kong Vase. The Caerleon entire flew out to Japan on Monday and was reported to have had a very good journey, losing only four kilograms during the 22-hour trip.
And after disappointing at Tokyo and Sha Tin last year, where he finished 15th and ninth respectively, Brittain is hopeful the seven-year-old can redress the balance this time around.
"Last year I was mystified as he ran so flat but he's had less racing this year and certainly seems to be showing all of his enthusiasm," said the trainer.
"He's in very good form and I'd expect him to go out and run a big race."
Brittain's charge, who has won four Group One races in a distinguished career, was last seen finishing a staying-on eighth behind Hurricane Run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Champion jockey Jamie Spencer has been booked to ride the dual Coronation Cup winner as usual partner Kerrin McEvoy is sidelined by a facial injury.
Although Spencer has never ridden Warrsan, Brittain believes he has found an ideal deputy for McEvoy. He said: "It's a shame for Kerrin but Jamie's a terrific rider and we've got an outstanding substitute.
"He came down to Lingfield to ride him last week in a stiff mile-and-a-quarter gallop and was suitably impressed. "He's seen hundreds of tapes of Warrsan and certainly knows what his backside looks like when he has been riding against him."
The Newmarket handler also revealed Warrsan's performances in the Japan Cup on November 27 and the Hong Kong Vase on December 11 will be pivotal in deciding whether the horse is kept in training as an eight-year-old.
"He hasn't had a bad race this year and if the horse runs two big races we'll have to see about the future," he reasoned.
