yay movie!! #25 --Say what? by: if_apples_were_oranges 09/22/02 01:07 pm rating: Where the heck do you get they are trying to copy pokemon? . This movie is in now way trying to copy it. To my understanding they are doing Asian folklore, like Disney did Snow White, Cinderella ect.
What can I say about this movie. Umm mm. Its like a 5000$ bottle of fine wine. Very impressive. Not only was the detail superb, but the action was beautiful, very fresh and original. One thing I notice about alot of anime, that isnt really bad but leaves me wanting more, is that some times they get so caught in the detail, it ends up looking more like a slide show of beautiful frames than a movie, persay.
And the script was awesome. I love how they always interject realife into thier movies. Its very cool. Like when they drive by her new school, the girl sticks her tongue out, in her discontent heh. Stuff like that. Its not sacrine.
The dialouge is snappy and it is funny, and scary too.
I have to say use caution if you allow your kids to see it. Not that its terribly scarey or anything, but it does include asain belief systems in it. And sorta apes some of the real magical practices they use. And teaching about God's and how everything has a spirit in it, ie the rivers, trees, instead of life, created by the Creator.
It is out on dvd now. I would highly suggest you get that watch it and then be prepared to say what God's Word says about these things. How in the spirit world is only God, angels and demons, and you dont play with spirits, because thats a demon in disguise but you do talk to God the father. And you dont use herbs or magic words to conteract evil, but pray to God and worship Him.
There were some terrific themes in it. Not to give too much away, but instead of being a mighty warrior or wizard, she was just a small, frail girl, but by obediance, and becoming a servant, and loving she was able to over come evil and help set things right. Just as Christ teaches us.
Wonderful!! Thank you Miyazaki! by: jwouden (21/M/Brigham City, UT) 09/22/02 02:18 pm rating: This was a wonderful and light-hearted movie. Engrossing and uplifting. Miyazaki has done it once again. The rest of the world realizes it, as this is the only movie ever to gross $200 million before coming to the U.S. The highest grossing film in Japanese history, recently surpassing Titanic. Now if only they would release Nausicaa here in the U.S., I would be a truly happy man.
Wooo hooo by: alien_pest_control 09/22/02 01:13 pm rating: Well i made the trek down to Seattle and wasnt disapointed.
I saw it an old historic theater, was kinda nice, added to the aumiance. The house was packed, including the balcony. (tis a really old theater, can only play one movie at a time.)
The audiance was really getting into it, cheering, laughing, and at the end applauding heh.
You have as much fun watching it as you did when you were young and watched cartoons. It has the depth you crave as an adult and the imagination, wit, and adventure you craved as a youngin.
Its on dvd if you want to buy it.
just look it up on the net. Princess Monoke was a previous release in Blockbuster right now. Check it out it rocks.
Disney has a whole slew of these movies they are only releasing one a year, that they bought the rights to from the asian company.
Nice very nice. (Me thinks Disney is taking notes. ;) )
Truly original and completly amazing! by: mikedaug 09/22/02 10:21 am rating: If you want to be wowed for awhile, this is your ticket. I was amazed at the originality and the animation was awsome. I quickly became unaware that I was even watching an animated picture. I liked this movie a little better than Princess Mononoky
Excellent! by: kamaji_the_spiderman 09/22/02 07:07 am rating: Disney did it right this time. They did a superb dubbing job. I recommend it to everyone.
BTW, Lion King is not an anime. That's true. But it's a remake (according to the IMDB) of an old Japanese anime called Jungle Taitei, a.k.a., Kimba the White Lion
Amazing film by: johndrewm (M/Orlando,Fl.) 09/22/02 01:46 am rating: While I did not care for it as much as Tonari no Totoro, this is my second favorite work of Miyazaki-san's and is simply an amazing film in every regard that begs to be seen. I've seen it 5 times now and it's just as good if not better with each sequential viewing. Can't wait till October 11th when I can see the dub to form my own opinion on its quality.
P.S. Post number 25 is hilarious.. the Pok駑on craze. Hah, golden
Wow. I honestly don't know where to begin with this movie. I loved the theme and message of everyone having the capacity for good and evil. I loved the animation, I loved the pure imagination behind the entire film, I love how I never knew what was going to happen next. Oftentimes the word "masterpiece" is tossed around when describing movies, but this film truly deserves that moniker. It was even better than Princess Mononoke (which I also loved). Go see this and be amazed.
It was surprising to read a review by the wall st. journal's critic (who really enjoys tearing into bad movies) that bordered on the corny, and it made me very curious about the film.
This is the first feature I've seen by Miyazaki, and I was positively awed by the many levels on which it operates, the plot twists, and the depth of its characters. The English translation and voiceovers are outstanding, too.
I'd really, really like to give it six stars, please :)
Number 25 - Go to the library. Then make sure you retake all the classes you dropped out of in high school. Stop using drugs. Or maybe you're just like that naturally. Nevermind then. There's no hope for you whatsoever.
Number 40 - In case you didn't see the topic, this is the "Spirited Away" review section. I believe you can find postings for desperately fundamental Christians at
Miyazaki's animation in this film almost made me like it more than Mononoke Hime. Although one might see Mononoke Hime as a stronger film, I personally liked this one more, as it enveloped me more, and the time from beginning to end seemed to just fly by. The film finished to a standing ovation at the El Capitan theatre in Hollywood last night. I am most definitely running out to pick up the Import DVD today. I was lucky enough to see it Otaku style, and I don't wish to see the hack job of a dub that the black and white Rat would make out of this just like he did with Mononoke Hime
