It's 1985. The wizards at CBS are basking in the glow of 227 and The Lucie
Arnaz Show. They sit around a big table, wondering where to point the artistic
magic wand next. CBS is king. CBS is cutting-edge. A script drops as if from
heaven onto the big table. Whump.
In this script, an aging, good-hearted man protects New York's innocent and exacts
revenge on the wicked. The CBS execs love it.
They rack their brains for an actor to play the lead character.
Someone tough and lovable. Someone who takes no guff.
And they select....

Edward Woodward?

So began The Equalizer, a generic revenge melodrama in which a fiftysomething man
inexplicably scared huge thugs with guns.
From this time forward Cosby kicked ass, and CBS was left with What's Happening Now?
Imagine how history might've been different.
magine if they'd gotten it right the first time.
Imagine if they'd cast....

Danny Aiello.

Imagine no longer, you crazy dreamer. Twelve years too late, Dellaventura features
Aiello as the Italian Equalizer: doing his Last Don routine, putting on and taking
off his itty-bitty sunglasses a dozen times per episode, scaring
giants who in reality could kill him with their eyelids.
But it's Aiello's show---the man who puts the "Roma" in "Aroma"---so
Dellaventura throws air-punches, gives us pat endings and sweats. A lot.

It's a long way from Do The Right Thing. Since then, Aiello's done, among
others, Hudson Hawk, Ruby, Pret-a-Porter, Harlem Nights and City Hall, in
which he plays the same Italian goombah
who caused Spike Lee to throw a trash can through his window.
You could practically recite last night's voiceovers verbatim: "Willy had as
much credibility as a millionaire politician...but
my nose was itchin' me, and it wasn't allergy season." Good lord.
