>>1 There was a little drawing of a heart next to that, followed by an exclaimation mark. The back of his was covered in stuff... stuff like: Brandon is not a very nice guy, but Alex is sooo nice. And that had the exclaimation thing too. It was just silly crap that hit the spot. And he let himself be drawn in...

"You need me. Buy me. You can't live without me!" says the smell of an old electric guitar when you hold it for the first time. Old electric guitars smell different to old acoustic guitars, as do old acoustic 'steel string' -to 'nylon strung' guitars. In the case of the former perhaps it's partly to do with the components concealed behind it's cracked & punished facade or the build-up of subtle residue left over from the tiny electric currents passing through it's veins. This may indeed be true but the most significant difference in smells between these three types of old guitar is 'where they were played'. Most old electric guitars have seen action on a front line filled with the aroma of beer, cigarettes, cigars & the unmistakable pong of collective 'sweat'. At some gigs the sweat rises from the bodies of the audience & rains down onto the stage. If the venue happens to have a ceiling that slopes towards the band (like a big-top or large tent) this can make for an unpleasant evening that requires the performer (& anyone else on stage) to keep smiling between intermittent dashes to the dressing room (toilets) to wipe off the grey paste that clings to the skin. This 'rain' or fine mist is not only breathed in by everyone but also finds it's way into the delicate musical equipment on stage carrying with it particles of smoke, dirt, dust & booze. Over the years old electric guitars (& in many case old acoustics) become impregnated with decades of indoor 'weather' - acquiring that unmistakable smell that make old guitars so alluring.
As teenagers between the ages of 14 - 19 we unloaded countless vans in the early hours of the morning after a night playing smokey working men's clubs & village halls & we remember how each one of them gave our equipment it's own particular smell (Sometimes the toilets of these establishments would bring a special 'tang' to the aromatic cocktail). Smelling the equipment during the load-in to storage straight after the gig is one thing, but returning to the store, lock-up or in most cases some poor unfortunate's 'front room' is a experience never to be forgotten by any youngster bent on a career amongst the stars. That first hit as you open the door & the acrid bite to the nose that let's you know exactly what you were breathing in, what was clogging up your pores & clinging to the roots of your hair whilst you cavorted & strummed was a shock every time. No matter - the desire to be discovered & land a ticket out've town meant that we kept returning to the scene of the crime time & time again to 'get our chops down' 'learn our trade' & maybe even get discovered....(maybe not). One result of all this young testosterone-driven compulsion was that our instruments became impregnated with 'the smell of the road'. Doesn't it sound glorious!? Still- that's what it is - in a nut shell. 'The Smell of the Road' is built up in layers - laid down over years. The first layers come from the factories these instruments were built in - new wood, paint, lacquer & solder. Then, in the hinterlands they breath in the swamp dust given off by the 'I'll play anywhere to get a gig' establishments.
Add in the smell of nights left in vans & damp lock-ups. Some may find temporary retirement around this time & take on the smell of lofts & dusty cupboards only to be re-discovered & sold on to buy that washing machine or bikes for the kids. Then, back in circulation where they've been snapped up by people like us with an eye for an instrument with a story they get back to the business of building their smell. The next layers of instrument body odour that will make them so appealing to the next one in line with cash to spare & a dream of a vintage guitar will begin to be laid down from the fine mists of sweat rising from a new generation.
This one - is a 3/4 scale M-65 Guild semi-acoustic with a single P-90 at the neck position & a wooden bridge. All making for a very sweet sound. We found in a porn shop the last time we played in Seattle & it sounds beautiful. The first time I played it was through an old 80's Gibson bass combo & the combination of the two was astonishing - love at first listen. The truth is - I went there looking to buy an old Dobro, but isn't that always the way when you go looking for a guitar?
The old bulldozer we found in the hedge today reminded us of the gardener robots in Miyazaki's - 'Castle in the Sky'. Kind've noble & sad & beautiful all at once & with the addition of live vegetation it looked more protector than destructor. It reminded us of another time when we were kids. The place where we grew up was on the edge of town & backed onto a large caravan site (trailer park). There's still a vivid memory of the bulldozer that was hauled in to clear land to provide parking space for the new generation of super caravans that were being brought in to provide holiday lets for the Brummies that travelled West every Summer. So far out've town were we in fact that the children of the migrant Brummies who lived over twenty miles away were our dearest friends & playmates. All our mates at school lived on the council estate on the other side of the valley & at a time when most parents weren't wealthy enough to own cars they were too far away to venture West of the ravine. Hence most of our closest friends were seasonal, though for all of our early lives I never grasped exactly why that was. The bulldozer we found today was exactly like the one we discovered as exited little kids scraping off turf & gouging bright orange slices out've the top field. The driver was unusually skinny with thick black rimmed glasses like Hank Marvin (Buddy Holly hadn't wiggled into my life).
He dressed all in black - skinny black drain-pipes, black military shirt & a cap identical to the ones you saw on tele worn by Union soldiers in films about the old Wild West. Even to kids living out in the sticks who were used to seeing some strange things this guys didn't dress normal. His machine smelled of excitement - oil & dirt & metal. It made a fantastic ripping sound as it cut the earth up & it left behind long trails of short parallel lines when it travelled. It crushed rocks as it rolled & when it stopped it shuddered & ticked like it's bones were settling back into place. It smelled warm & oozed black stuff. It was the most exciting thing that had happened to us in years & yet there was one more jewel in the crown of that autumn. To ease the monotony of his day the driver carried one of the modern transistor radios that were becoming ever increasingly popular amongst the older kids - the Mods & the Rockers that fought seasonal battles for control of the cafe in town. Anyway - to be able to hear his tranny over the noise of the engine the bulldozer driver wore a single flesh-tone ear-piece connected to his radio by a long twisted flesh-tone flex. I remember this because I couldn't work out why he was wearing a hearing-aid connected to his radio. One thing about it was 'so-not-cool' & at the same time 'so-was'. It was one've those image-clashes I will never be able to shift from my memory.
He stopped his machine when we all ran up waving at him & gave us a listen to that little pink plug that he stuck in his ear. It sounded so tinny & disappointing. Many years later - whilst posing for photographs for the cover art of the second U/W mkI album - one've the band members turned up dressed in an almost identical way to the driver of that bulldozer & though I tried daily to see 'the cool' in it all I could see was a skinny Hank Marvin fan with a penchant for old Westerns who smelled of oil. We found that album in the record archive last week. My mate looked at us posing on a Spanish hillside & said, "How camp" I said, "Actually, I really liked dressing up" The guy in the Union cap is starting to look cool.....

Have you ever thought you were mad? I don't mean angry mad, I mean not right in the head mad? Me? All the time. Ha bloody ha. As mad as a chat room.
I'm in the studio, It's late again and I'm tired. I'm not here because of any huge plan or impending deadline, it's just because I've been looking for the calm, the not-mad place inside the music again. I found it too. But then it's not hard to find, it's just really hard to keep a hold of. To be honest I think I just need more sleep.
Anyway, uuummm.... This is the radio broadcast from the other night at the Isle of Wight (Maison du Rob). Myself, I didn't make the epic voyage south, I wanted to break something, play a different groove is all. For once I got to be in my own audience. I'll remember it for a long time. I told you, me?.....as mad as a chat room.
>>611 youtubeで聴いてみたよ。GASやLoscilに似た感じなのな。 確かになかなか良さそうだね、冬に合いそうだ。 でも単調すぎないか? もう少し旋律か、音にアクセントが欲しいな。 14000円はぼったくり過ぎだろw それでも買う人がいるんだろうか。 個人的には Tim Hecker, Stars of The Lid, Deaf Center, Vladislav Delay
eno方面だとharold buddのAfter the Night FallsとBefore the Day Breaksってのがお勧め。
