One year ago, on February 15th, citizens of Earth received a wake-up call.
Near-Earth Asteroids do in fact strike Earth and we ignore them at our own peril.
Exploding without warning in the atmosphere over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk was
an asteroid moving about 60 times the speed of sound.
The shock wave from the explosion injured 1,500 people, including 311 children, and
caused more than a billion rubles or $33 million in damage.
It damaged 7,200 buildings, 6,000 apartments, 293 medical facilities, 718 schools and
more than 100 other city structures.
The incredibly intense light from the meteor, momentarily 30 times brighter than the Sun,
caused more than a hundred cases of eye injuries and ultraviolet skin burns.
And, this was a small asteroid, just 50 feet across!
