Daioh Temple of Rinzai Zen Buddhism (Myoshin Temple Sect) has enjoy a 400 year long history and tradition of teaching the word of the Buddha. As we step into the 21st century, a spiritual void has been created and the need for religious guidance is more apparent than ever before. As a means of filling this void, we, at Daioh Temple, have decided to propagate the teachings of Buddha through the use of the Information Highway. And to start, it is our intention to hold the first ever buddhist service on the Internet. What is this "Information Service"? Not to long ago before the computer was invented, people recorded important matters by committing them to paper through the use of a pen and ink. As we enter the 21st century, however, most of the knowledge gained presently is through the use of electronic-aided devices, whether they be televisions, radios or PCs. To recognize this great transformation of knowledge and the effort that was required to see it through, an "Information Service" will be held.
After the effort of transforming all this knowledge into electronic information has been completed, is it enough then to say that we are finished? And from there, can we truly make effective use of that which we have created? Sometimes, the answer is "no". To provide an example, there are many 'living' documents and softwares that are thoughtlessly discarded or erased without even a second thought. It is this thoughtlessness that has drawn the concern and attention of Head Priest Shokyu Ishiko. Head Priest Ishiko hopes that through holding an "Information Service" and by teaching the words of Buddha, that this 'information void' will cease to exist.
The procedures for carrying out the "Information Service" will be as listed below. A 'REAL' buddhist service for lost information will be held at Daioh Temple in northwest Kyoto, Japan. Teachings of the Buddha will be provided via the Internet. The teachings on the Internet will be provided through a 3D site, "Jomoh Temple", which was constructed by Daioh Temple, Kyoto, Japan. Daioh Temple can readily construct memorial statues/monuments on the temple grounds in Kyoto for those concerned parties. Virtual "Jomoh Temple" , with it's principle diety of worship being Manjusri Bodhisattva, the god of wisdom and intellect, is not discriminatory against other buddhist sects or other religions from placing 'information pages' on its homepage.
The "Information Service" will be held this year and every subsequent year on October 24th at Daioh Temple in Kyoto, Japan. As the principle unit of the computer is the kilobyte (1024), it only seemed logical to hold the service on the 24th day of the 10th month. A special paper charm produced by Daioh Temple and made of silk called "Sankenshi" will be offered to all those who attend the service. It is also possible to order the charm via the "Jomoh Temple" homepage. The virtual, 3D homepage of "Jomoh Temple" will go on-line on April 8th, the date believed to be the birth of the Buddha.
* What is "Sankenshi"? Sankenshi is a piece of 100% silk produced by silkworms that have been genetically engineered for over 20 years by Head Priest Ishiko. Head Priest Ishiko is a graduate of Kyushu University with a doctorate in agriculture. He is world-renouned for his research with silkworms.
