Dear Dr. XX (確か二人ともPh.Dだったよね?)

My name is YY, (簡潔な自己紹介)
I'm strongly impressed with your paper about facilitated communication (FC).
It seems that your carefull scientific research on FC proves it is nothing but
a "facilitator communication." I think we can consider it as a kind of pseudoscience.

However, unfortunatelly, many Japanese people still believe that FC is a
very effective communication method for disabled people, especially for
brain-damaged children. Why? Here is the reason:

(問題のページへ。動画へのリンク。英訳がまだ用意できてない事のお詫び)

NHK (http://www.nhk.or.jp/englishtop/) is the only public TV station
in Japan that covers almost all area. They have a program called
"NHK Special." It is one of the most popular NHK documentary program and
they made some incredible science documentaries. (もう少しNHKの説明)

Last month, they put a program called "Kiseki No Shijin (means "a Miracle Poet")"
on the air. In short the documentary was about a "genious" brain-damaged 11 years
old boy who wrote hundreds of poems by FC. His parents insisted that the boy was
recovered by a rehabilitation program (Doman Method). The FC I saw in the TV program
was totally ridiculous---his mother "facilitated" his hands and "he" typed more than
3 letters per second! In addition, "he" typed words even at the moment he fell
into sleep... You may think it is a kind of bad joke, but millions of Japanese
people still believe he is a genious, and his books have been top 10 best sellers
since last week!

Fortunatelly, some people criticized the program and on May 11, 2002, NHK presented
a short program to explain why they believe the boy is a real genious. Basically,
their explanation was totally unacceptable. They just insisted FC is a reasonable
(and scientific) method for communication, in other words, they insisted
your paper was wrong.

(ここももうチョト説明)

This is a very serious problem since public TV station hepled pseudoscience and
because of their authority in Japan, many Japanese people believe FC (and Doman
Method) is a powerful tool of communication between disabled children and other
popole.
