US Supports Japan in Diaoyutai Islands Dispute Source: China Times August 30, 2012
On August 28, the US government formally announced that the US government would refer to the Diaoyutai Islands as the Senkaku Islands like the Japanese government did. However, the US government at the same time stated that it did not have an official position on sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands, but the Senkaku Islands were included within the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan.
When questioned by the media, Victoria Nuland, a US State Department spokesperson, cautiously answered that the issue of the Senkaku Islands was complicated; therefore, she must discreetly answer based on reference information. After referring to related information, Nuland solemnly answered that the US government referred to the Diaoyutai Islands as the Senkaku Islands.
Nuland said that the US government had no official position on merits of competing sovereignty claims over the Senkaku Islands, but the Senkaku Islands were included within Article 5 of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan.
ヌーランドは米国政府の方針を繰り返し、米国政府は沖縄を1972年に日本に返還した。尖閣諸島は そのときに日本の支配下になった、と述べた。 了(訳:俺) A US journalist pointed out that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan should only cover Japanese territory, so if the US government had no official position on sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands, the Senkaku Islands were not part of the territory of Japan. Therefore, the journalist asked, was it not a contradiction for the US government to conclude that Senkaku Islands were included within the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States and Japan?
Nuland reiterated the US government policy and stated that the US government handed Okinawa over to Japan in 1972, and the Senkaku Islands came under the administrative control of the Japanese government at the same time.
