Below is the picture and the movie of the demonstration held today against Fuji TV, one of the Japanese major TV station, in front of its corporate building.
More than 2000 people gathered to protest against recent Fuji's biased coverage of Korean entertainment such as dramas and singers, as well as their use of subliminal advertising and so-called stealth marketing. Although the foreign shareholder composition of Fuji TV is just below 20% which is the legal limit by Japanese laws, demonstrators as well as significant number of people who take internet as their main sources of news, think Fuji is largely biased in favour of Korean entertainment, affected by large shareholders.
It has been found out that Fuji Pacific Music Inc.., the subordinary of Fuji TV, has the copyrights of number of Korean songs, on JASRAC's database. Under recent economic circumstances, advitising business is facing severe decline, and TV stations are struggling with fall of revenues and making costly TV shows. However, cost-effective Korean entertainments are now their gold mine, with moderate and constant viewer ratings, and copyright earnings to their subordinary.
It is concerned that Fuji TV utilizes the public airwave to promote Korean entertainments for its own sake. The fact that one young actor who questioned such Fuji's situation on Twitter was inexplicably fired by one of the major entertainment company, accelerated people's resentment, and led to today's demonstation. Some policitians including former majority LDP members see they need to work on this problem. This is the first time large number of Japanese people held demonstation against media in recent history. Today's demonstation is set as an initial one, and main gathering will be held on August 21.
