DSS and DS leaders reached agreement over second round of election Kostunica shall support Tadic Author: Nikola M. Jovanović | 23.01.2008 - 06:00
DS and DSS have agreed about support to Boris Tadic in the second round of presidential election. The first indicator of that support is an agreement reached in principle that the Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and President Boris Tadic travel together to Moscow on Friday for signing of agreement on energy cooperation with Russia. Velimir Ilic, Minister of Infrastructure, Aleksandar Popovic, Minister of Energy and Mining and Vuk Jeremic, Foreign Minister, are also to travel to Moscow.
The margins of that meeting could be used for talks with Russia President Vladimir Putin resulting in support to Tadic in the runoff. Immediately after that, negotiations with EU over SAA are expected to resume. There is serious work in progress that SAA is signed as early as on December 28. Other possible date is February 14 or 15 when the cession of EU Council of Minister has to take place, our source from the ruling coalition says. According to that source only after signing of gas agreement with Russia and outcome of EU ministerial councils cession, Kostunica is expected to publicly announce his support to Tadic as a presidential candidate.
DSS requested from Tadic to undertake not to support arrival of EU mission in Kosovo without previous UN SC resolution. In return Tadic insisted on clear stance over necessity for signing of the agreement on stabilization and association with EU. In principle, the agreement has been reached but talks are yet to be held in the following days, our source says. At Governments press conference held yesterday on the occasion of adoption of the gas agreement with Russia, Kostunica did not want to reply to questions regarding support to Tadic saying only that the right address for these questions is DSS. That partys spokesman Andreja Mladenovic confirmed that DSS and NS leaders, Kostunica and Velimir Ilic, yesterday talked about the second round of the presidential election.
We have to see where the Kosovo issue is in the runoff since we are talking about election for the President of the Republic whose first constitutional duty is to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, Mladenovic said.
Moscow for DS candidate
Official Moscow is backing DS presidential candidate Boris Tadic, analysts of the leading Russian media claim reporting in details about presidential election in Serbia. The biggest Russian state-run agency RIA Novosti mentions as one of the reasons for such support that Moscow does not need new battlefield in the Balkans. T. Vasiljević
