TYRE, Lebanon -- A Japanese humanitarian worker apparently affected by the war in Lebanon has committed suicide in the southern town of Tyre, a local police official said Thursday.
The official identified the man as Tyshi Hiroyasha, aged 53.
He said the victim, who had been working in the southern village of Bint Jbeil, which was devastated during Israel's 34-day war against the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, suffered a nervous breakdown Wednesday and was transported to the main hospital in Tyre, where he jumped to his death from a third-floor window.
The Japanese embassy in Beirut confirmed that one of its citizens had died in Tyre but would not provide any details.
"All I can tell you is that a Japanese man who worked for a non-governmental organization has died because he was sick," an embassy spokesman who did not wish to be named told Agence France-Presse.
