CARLSBAD, Calif.- A man suspected of attacking his girlfriend with a samurai sword over the weekend was bitten by a police dog that found him hiding under a bed, authorities said. David Maurer, 49, was booked into county jail Monday on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to cause great bodily injury.
Maurer is being held in lieu of $1 million bond.
A woman called police Sunday night claiming that Maurer, her live-in boyfriend, had come after her with a sword threatening to kill her and inflicted a minor cut on her hand. Police didn't find Maurer until Monday, when they called the couple's home. After Maurer refused to come out, police accompanied by trained dogs forced their way into the home and found Maurer under a bed in an upstairs bedroom, according to Carlsbad Police Lt. Kelly Cain.
The dog bit Maurer before officers got to him.
Maurer was treated at a local hospital for his injuries before being booked into custody, Cain said. It could not immediately be determined whether Maurer had retained an attorney.
