Tokyo sees heaviest March snowfall since1995

Central Tokyo experienced its heaviest March snowfall in a decade Friday morning, the Meteorological Agency said.
Kanto region prefectures saw accumulations of up to 14 cm that disrupted transportation and led to five serious injuries.
Some 2 cm fo snow fell in Tokyo’s Ohtemachi business district, the heaviest March snowfall in central Tokyo since 1995, the agency said.
By noon, Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, had been blanketed in 14 cm ; Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 7 cm ; and both Kumagaya in Saitama Prefecture and Chiba in 4 cm.
Yokohama received 2cm.
The snowfall snarled transportation, with the Tohkaido Shinkansen line applying speed restrictions between Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and Odawara Station in Kanagawa Prefecture that caused delays of up to 10 minutes.
At Haneda airport, 55 flights to and from Tokyo had been canceled as of 1p.m., affecting about 9,000 people. Departures of 88 international flights out of Narita airport were also delayed by up to one hour.
At least 23 people were injured in Tokyo, most of them from slipping, the Tokyo Fire Department said.
In Tokyo’s Suginami Ward, a 47-year-old man fractured his left led during a fall on his way to work.
In Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture, a 56-year-old man broke his leg as he was removing snow from a net at a driving range.
Several colleges and universities in Tokyo also delayed their entrance examinations by up to an hour due to the snowfall.
More than 60 public high schools in Tokyo started classes later than usual.
While the worst of the snow had passed by mid-afternoon in Tokyo, weather officials urged people to be careful because roads and sidewalks would ice over during the night.
