Let's cut with the bull: in all of major league history, Matsuzaka is the only starter with as many as 18 victories and fewer than 169-1/3 innings. Does he really deserve credit for that? Yes, Matsuzaka is hard to hit, but he walks way too many batters and puts way too much strain on the bullpen. As far as No. 3 starters go, he's fine. But he's pitching Game 2.
01:02〜 Daisuke Matsuzaka is a crap shoot! 18-3? Forget the 18-3, it was a misleading 18-3. He pitched well at times, very well, but not often enough and not long into the games enough and he benmefitted from a great run support, and quite frankly we just don't know what to expect from him.
From: mr_nuggles Lester will be fine, Dice K has to have control and be able to work more than 5 innings.
From: soxfan1000 I'm not concerned with Lester. Dice-K needs to be mroe than a 5 inning pitcher.
From: joshbeck19 Lester, I'm not worried about either but Dice K scares me. He has to go more than five innings.
denver_soxfan: Amalie, I'm getting nervous. My gut feeling is that if we don't take care of business tonight (in Lester we trust), we're doomed. Let's face it, Dice-K in a possible game 5 don't exactly inspire a world of confidence. What key(s) do you see for tonight's game? I need a confidence booster! ;)
Amalie Benjamin: Not sure if this is the confidence boost you want, but I think the Sox are in a tough spot if the series shifts back to Anaheim. I don't have a lot of faith in the Daisuke-Santana matchup favoring the Sox a second time. I think Jon Lester is really a key. If he can hold down the Angels again, and especially if he can give them seven (or even eight) innings, that would clearly be huge, as Lackey has the ability to do the same for the Angels.

Outfielder Carl Crawford, who went down on a called strike fastball against Matsuzaka, had said after the first game that it seemed during the game that Matsuzaka was throwing balls and missing the plate. But upon reviewing the tape, it was clear he had duped the Rays with fastball strikes on the edges.
Realizing that Matsuzaka could locate his fastball that well was a revelation, said manager Joe Maddon, and one to learn from.
“You know, what I learned the other day was that he has got better fastball command than I thought,” said Maddon. “Seeing a lot of him in the past, I always thought that he threw a lot of fastballs around the zone and I didn’t think it was intentional. I just thought he had bad fastball command. Whereas in the past I thought it was primarily just breaking-ball strike, but now it’s fastball strike, too.”

Similar to fellow countryman Daisuke Matsuzaka, Tazawa is a nibbler. In the majors, this could will be a problem. Japanese baseball has notoriously large strike zones, and it has taken time for Matsuzaka to adjust; he’s arguably still in the infancy of his adjustment process.

Both include foreign imports in their twenties who succeed despite sketchy peripherals (Chien-Ming Wang and Daisuke Matsuzaka).
Wang and Matsuzaka are something of a draw, though Wang's ability to survive his low strikeout rates by inducing ground balls is significantly more efficient and seems more sustainable than Matsuzaka's ability to finesse a lineup by walking the hitters he doesn't want to challenge.
