Matsui was the focal point in 2003 when the Yankees signed Japan's "Godzilla"
as a free agent and placed him into their star-studded lineup. Matsui was a
championship-level player in Japan, whose Yomiuri Giants had just swept the
Seibu Lions in the Japan Series to win the title.
But mostly he's known frustration and injuries in a Yankees uniform. There was
the loss to the Marlins in the 2003 World Series, early playoff exits the next three
years and a broken wrist that cost him all except 51 games of the 2006 season.
A 50-homer-a-year hitter in Japan, Matsui has only hit 81 since he's been with
the Yankees.
In the beginning, it was Matsui vs. Ichiro in the battle of Japanese titans.
As he missed 16 days in early April nursing a hamstring injury, it became
Ichiro vs. Daisuke Matsuzaka. How times have changed.
Matsui has the pride of a lion and is trying to reconstitute his once mighty career.
