In the port city of Basra, about 800 people took to the streets to vent their anger at Wednesday's carnage.
The protesters were backers of radical Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr, whose spokesperson in Basra claimed he had evidence that British troops were involved in the coordinated attacks on police installations in Basra and nearby Zubair.
The spokesperson did not elaborate, but said that since Britain, a key member of the coalition running Iraq, had failed to provide security in the area, its troops should let police and militias handle the situation.
