Northern Japan had more than double the normal rainfall in July than in an average year, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
It also noted Monday that in coastal areas along the Sea of Japan, there were 40 percent fewer hours of sunlight compared with a normal year.
The agency, crediting the freak weather to the El Nino phenomenin the Pacific Ocean and westerly winds, has forecast more rainy and cloudy days in August and cautioned that torrential rains are likely.
Last month, the Pacific side of northern Japan--Hokkaido and the Tohoku region--had record levels of rainfall for the month.
The rainfall in the northern part of the Sea of Japan side was the second-largest on record.
The region with the most rainfall in July compared with that in an average year was Hokkaido, with rainfall 2.56 times the usual amount.
In some parts of northern Tohoku, the Hokuriku region, northern Kyushu and the western Chugoku region, precipitation was more than 1.7 times what is normally recorded in July
