Youngsters out-gunned in Beveren
A youthful Gunners side went down 3-1 in Beveren this afternoon,
with Joe Kuffour grabbing Arsenal's only goal and Junichi Inamoto
starting.

Inamoto's appearance prompted a healthy presence of Japanese journalists,
but The Gunners' new boy was eventually withdrawn from the action on
66 minutes, although the coaching staff were keen to stress that he
had not suffered an injury. Eddie Niedzwiecki stated afterwards: "The
idea of the game was a fitness practice. Inamoto was not injured but
physically he needed to come off."

The game itself, played in the afternoon sun in front of 1500 spectators,
saw Arsenal take a half-time lead but eventually succumb 3-1. Indeed
Arsenal weakened physically after the break having not eaten properly
during the day due to the time restraints enforced by travelling for
the game.

Arsenal took the lead through Kuffour on 25 minutes, when Juan Maldonado's
cross from the right found Kuffour lying deep, and he made room for the
shot before floating a chip that caught out Beveren 'keeper Philip Deckers
to find the back of the net. Kuffour had earlier missed a point-blank
header from Jermaine Pennant's cross. Inamoto had two efforts of note
before the break, both from distance, one flying narrowly wide and the
other well saved by Deckers. Brazilian Zezeto came close for the hosts
in a fairly even first period but Stuart Taylor parried well in the
Arsenal goal. Zezeto then forced Taylor into action from a well executed
chip just before the break.
