Wolves' Korean star misses taste of home Nov 14 2004
South Korea star Seol Ki-Hyeon has been used to living a long-distance existence since leaving
his homeland - but he did not expect a 300-mile round trip to do the shopping!
The Wolves striker faces a 15,000-mile trek every time he plays for his national team and is also
clocking up the miles for a taste of home. Seol, 25, a ?1.2 million signing from Anderlecht, has to undertake
regular trips to Surrey after failing to develop a liking for British cuisine.
"The food over here is very ordinary," said Seol, who is particularly unimpressed with the popular fish
and chips and curry. "I don't think it is very special but thought I would not have to worry about that
because there are more Korean people here than where I was in Belgium. "In Anderlecht there were only about
300 Koreans but there were places to go. Before coming here I heard that Birmingham was very big
and that there were about 1,000 Koreans there.
"So I expected there would be a few Korean restaurants and a Korean supermarket for me as there was
in Belgium but we haven't found anything. "There is a Korean community in New Malden in Surrey and
that is where I have been going to do my shopping. "There is everything there but because of the distance
I can only go once or twice a month. That has certainly been a surprise.
"I know there is a large Chinese community in Birmingham, but it is very different." While he eases
into life in the Black Country, the region's Korean community are attempting to play their part
in making the former Royal Antwerp star feel at home.

Seol is the first Korean footballer to try his luck on these shores, and that has brought extra pressure
as a standard-bearer. The country's exploits in the World Cup two years ago made superstars of all the team
but, with Seol one of a handful playing in Europe, he has an even greater appeal.
Last week more than 100 Koreans descended on Molineux to see their World Cup hero in action
- only for him not to be in the squad. It was a disappointing day out in Wolverhampton for the Far East crew,
who have vowed to return to cheer their hero.
"I am disappointed that I did not play because of the people who had come here to support me," said Seol.
"They had come from Birmingham and Coventry and the fact that I didn't play is very disappointing."
