"Nitre," I replied. "How long have you had that cough?"

My poor friend found it impossible to reply for many minutes.

"It is nothing," he said, at last.

「硝石？」と彼はようやく尋ねた。

「硝石だ。」と私は答える。

「どのくらい前からその咳をしているんだね？」

「ごほん、ごほん、ごほん、・・・」

可哀想な友は長い間答えることが出来なかった。

「こんなのは何でもない。」と彼はやっと言った。
