Hey!!! All you NEETs, nerds, YouTube-link spammers, pedophiles, neo-Nazis, Yukorin enthusiasts, Nanako SOS admirers, Part-Time-Preachers, Diplomats' spoiled sons, losers who can't remember Kanji characters, Big-boobs fans, Weeaboos from all over the world, learners of Japanese who are too lazy to update their Japanese blogs very often, cunning linguists, stupid fan girls of Johnny's Boys, Touhou pirates, and that electrical super-gay who suffers from mental disease - This is your thread! Let's hope Igirisu-jin and the Internet-addicted housewife will come back soon!
This is the place to have a ball!!!!! Let's support recovery efforts in Japan!!!!!!
I wasn't sure if I was supposed to make another one of these or not, but I did it anyway. If I wasn't supposed to, let me know, and I won't do it again.
Excuse me, can I ask you a quick question? well, please help me. I have trouble with my homework. I have to translate this English text to Japanese.
"How long can you stand on one leg with your eyes closed before you lose your balance? Try doing this exercise and time yourself; your time is up when you open your eyes or lose your balance. For a person in their 20s, 60seconds would be excellent. For someone in their 60s, 15seconds would be good."
I can't understand third line and fourth line. What does that mean? By any chance, s is not second? what is the "s"?
On the other side of the closed door there's something new waiting for me. And it's running me saying "you'll be fine". Life is not all roses but still I wanna knock on the next door. It's an endless journey to search for the real self which should be greater than now.
Steve Jobs is dead. The world would be a much better place if I had died instead of him. I would sacrifice the lives of 1000 NEETS to reincarnate Steve Jobs.
1:Today's first class starts at 11. 2: Takes roughly an hour from home to school. (plus 5minutes walk from the station to the campus)3: Now I'm not even halfway.
That means there's a high possibility of me being late !
Some people here are university students overseas. I have good news for you guys. You can come visit Japan free of charge as Japanese governmentpay the bill.
Got back from the dentist office!! But my tooth reallllllly hurts!!! When I drink hot or cold stuff, it kills me!!
>>36 Yes, That sentence makes sense. I mean it's grammatically correct. But it would be better to give more specific information after that, like your own experience!
>>50 Yama-P's sister wrote in her blog that she wants everybody to understand the 8 years of patience of his. (the blog entry has already been deleted)
So NEWS fans got angry, like "What? Being a member of News for 8 years equals to 8 years of patience? He wanted to leave the group sooner but he was patient enough not to?" "Isn't the comment rude to the rest of NEWS memeber and their fans?"
Everybody who read the blog entry and got angry resorted to Twitter and striked back against her, sending messages on her Twitter account. http://twitter.com/#!/rinayamashita
After this commotion, she posted a comment on her blog, apologizing for what she had wrote. http://ameblo.jp/rina-maharo2/ (Rough translation of her post is below.) --------- "I really appologize for making you feel bad and uncomfortable because of my inappropriate remark.
I was not in a position in the first place where I can comment on that (=his leaving the group) so I'm deeply sorry (for my imprudent comment.)
Although my brother never talks with me about his job, I posted such an entry on my blog (and ended up causing commotion.) I'm deeply sorry." ------
I had completed a contract of iPhone 4S at this afternoon. But I did it too late that's why I have not received new iPhone yet. I can hardly wait for receive it...
As you know, iPhone4S has finaly released. Well, I'm not interesed in smartphone at all. So I don't want at all. Personally speaking, I prefer foldable phones to smartphones. I hate putting fingerprints on cellphone. I wanna keep it clean. And I treat all buyers who bought iPhone4S on the first released day as "simple-minded trend followers". I suggest that they should've waited until the phone's price gets down.
Buying something on the first released day is stupid and non-bright shopping way, I do think.
>>74 Um, I think so. And I wonder if he is really GIFTED? I think the reason Japan's mass media often follows him is just he is a YOUNG GOLFER. Except that, he isn't a good golfer. Ah, I don't mean I envy him.
I must work on this report for gym class RIGHT NOW, but how could I write about something I don't really understand?? In the first place why do I have to take such a ridiculous class in college =_=
>>76 There was a TV program which examined Ryo's physical condition a couple of years ago, surely using past pictures of famous golfers. Those who could let fly with drivers off the flame of TV camera were only Ryo and Tiger Woods. I think his possibility is true.
I like Ekiden, too. I watch Hakone Ekiden on TV every year, but don't have any favorite team. Somehow, I only remember the scenes where some athletes who were running the race suddenly had an accident. For example, Kushibe Seiji, who was a member of Waseda University, got dehydrated when he almost near the goal. Or Nakamura Yuji, who belonged to Yamanashi Gakuin, retired on the way when his leg got injured .
>>85 I remember the scene somehow. We could see various dramatic scenes in HAKONE EKIDEN. I never forget the golden age of Juntendo univ. especially the latter of 80's.
>>90 Japanese radish is the best! And I like deep-fried tofu, too. Now I'm drinking kohaku yebisu and reading an English grammar book. I think it's hard to understand English grammar with beer.
>>107 Hi Nishi. Good job on it. I hardly remember what gym's report is like though I had. Because It's a long time ago. Now I'm often thinking of the days of university. I should have tried something seriously.
>>117 I'm envious of you because I have to go to work every day however worst my condition may be. There is no one to substitute for me in my workplace.
>>108 hey 9.9 Sorry for replying late, I've been kinda busy for the last 3 days!
The report i was doing was about language and cognition. It's nothing to do with gymnastics.... : P So What would you want to do if you were a college student again??
>>119 Thanks, but just living from hand to mouth. That's really unstable. I wouldn't like to recommend others actively. What is good is obviously free.
>>121 Doesn't matter. If I returned to college, I would join the light music club. I was a student in the middle of 90's, when J-POP was so great. Though I played the guitar alone, but I didn't feel like joining something like this. Japanese popular music was so great at that time that I couldn't think to express anything better.
>>29 He was a great marketer, but I'd argue that his innovations were not so innovative. Most of them had been seen before, but the Apple marketing blanket convinces people they're brand new.
>>122 Thanks for the coverage. Recently, there was a competition where the winner was sent to every prefecture over the course of three months, and has to write about the trip. Also, there are some reciprocal schemes with certain countries for a 'working holiday' where people can apply for a year-long working visa. Countries involved are the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, France, Germany, Ireland, Denmark, Hong Kong and Korea.
We recently had an Indian Summer, but now it's back to being cold and miserable. Apparently we're getting frost and maybe a bit of snow next week.
>>132 Yeah. I thought a touch panel is Apple's invention but I heard it was originally invented by Xerox. Maybe he is genious in combining existing (but not so prevaling) technology in very attractive user frinedly manner.
Japan's experiencing strange weather, on the past sunday the temperature around tokyo reached almost 30 degree.
One of the most awkward moments: when your in a school cafeteria alone, find someone you know(but not like a friend) sitting near you and chatting with their freinds cheerfully, and don't know if you should say hello to them.......
>>127 That would be nice! I guess playing in the band is much more fun. Do you still play the guitar??
Hey you guys! Do you like a comic series of "Yuru Yuri"? I like it and bought a goods what is a glass with its heroines are painted. Akari is cute, Kyoko is cute too, Yui is cute too, and Chinatsu is cu..... I don't like her very well.... But all of "Yuru Yuri" heroines are very cute!!!
>>138 I hardly play nowadays. My condition isn't so good for years. That's one reason. But I wanna resume before long. There are many songs which I made.
>>135 As I'm writing this, the temperature is currently 2 degrees outside. It's due to become even colder in the coming week.
>>143 I feel it's still best to learn properly structured English before moving to casually structured (or unstructured) internet/text English.
>>150 Many multi-touch implementations were developed by a company called FingerWorks, which was founded in 1998. However, Apple bought the company in 2005, along with their patents. Multi-touch itself has been around in ideas since the 1970s, with some devices using early concepts in the 1980s. Apple bought the patents, rather than developing the technology itself.
>>152 Speaking of Apple, have you heard it filed patent lawsuits against Samsung? Japanese TV media wouldn't try to broadcast news that may harm Korea's reputation, but on the net, many people show interest in what's going on.
Out of curiosity, I'm wondering if the majority of English people knew Samsung is a Korean company? Many people pointed out that Samsung has been trying to hide its identity because they want to be considered a Japanese company. Take a look at the image below. http://img4.blogs.yahoo.co.jp/ybi/1/1c/80/x1konno/folder/1172734/img_1172734_35040440_8?1314432979 Sushi... Mt. Fuji... Those are the things that bring Japan to mind, aren't they?
One of the most important things that worries me here is that many people believe Samsung is a Japanese company that breaks patents. Korean people have a bad habit of doing bad things in disguise of Japanese. I read months ago, for example, that a Korean woman got arrested in Taiwan or Hong Kong for doing something bad (sorry I forgot exactly what) after she claimed she was Japanese (what the heck is the purpose of that?). There are many more examples like this than I can't remember now.
>>162 You can't pick one or two examples to generalize what others do. Though it's absolutely true that most Japanese restaurants in my city, which is one of top ten in the US, are owned by either Korean or Chinese people. Though some places serve ok food, some dishes are awkward. For example, one place serves a rice bowl with katsu and sunny side up on it. We do not call it a "Katsu-don". (But it's my favorite).
>>151-152 I didn't know how they got the patents for multi-touch screens. I just assume that they developed it as they hold the patents. In any case, I like their products not because they use the top-notch technology, but because I feel happiness when I use them such as iTouch or Macbook.
Korean student in my university laboratory is nice guy. I think the significant problem is not so much characteristics of a nation but education and government policy in Korea. This is much more difficult problem than we thought.
the rate of Korean people commiting crimes is high. That's based on the hard evidence and data. Those who try to stand up for Koreans often say, my Korean friend is nice or whatever. So what? The thing is, we are not talking about your friend. There are many koreans commiting crimes that are arrested for that.
>>175 I know that the crime rate for Korean is the highest of all foreigners in Japan, but to me it's kind of funny that you say that it's supported by "the hard evidence and data" without showing any number.
>>175 The crime rate here is going up rapidly too. It's not because the people are suddenly becoming evil, it's because there are no jobs anymore. People turn to drugs and crime when they have no jobs. There are many factors to be considered.
>>177 You didn't catch the point. I said that I know it is true. What I meant was you should quote something when you say your argument based on the facts.
Your english was a bit funny and I wanted to tease you. Sorry.
>>180 It's not that funny. Just a little bit. And as I am japanese, my english must be like that to native speakers.
Here's the reason why I said that to you. When you make friends with foreign people, your english can be broken. But if you are attacking or criticizing others, you have to be convincing (e.g. using correct english or showing evidences etc). Your writing is clear and easy to follow, but not quite good to persuade people. But this is 2ch, probably you don't have to be that serious.
>>173 Have you ever participated SXSW (music, techy) festival? If so, what was it like. The plan that 1000 tech startup Japanese people will participate in it the next year to make a big impact and to draw attentions is underway. underway.
>>185 Living in Texas is not as bad as most people think. It's civilized in cities. We don't see cowboys with 44 magnums outside Rodeo shows.
There aren't so many places in Houston which attract travelers, but it's good place to live because of very inexpensive living costs (especially food and housing), and huge ethnic diversity. Weather is terrible in summer (and a half of every year is summer), but from October through March is amazing.
>>187 I haven't been there unfortunately. My friends have, and here's what they said. It's like a showcase of young musicians. If you are not in music industry, you must be a big fan of music. There is a little point to go there just one day. Stay as long as one can and enjoy everything.
>>189 Yes, I heard about it from my friend too !but Texas is such a huge state, right?? what about much more rural, less populated farming areas?? I also want to visit those inaka places!!>_^
If the dream comes true, we all will be happy because we can live longer. But I don't wanna live longer with some illness like cancer, diabetes... In addition, I wonder if there are some fun in the future world where I would be in if I can live longer.
Well, for some who wanna live longer, it's a good information and gives them hope to live in this so fuckin' cruel world.
>>201 It's a shame that he wasn't able to be taken alive. There were still many questions to be asked of him, especially in the case of the Lockerbie Bombing, of Pan Am Flight 103, which killed 270 people. And of his involvement in deals with people such as our former prime minister, Tony Blair.
>>169 It's best to use what you feel most comfortable with, as well as what gives you the functionality you need. It's just a shame that all these manufacturers are suing and counter-suing, when it's competition that leads to innovation, which is best for the consumer. Anyway, I'd say that I respect Jobs for his ability to build businesses, especially when he bought an offshoot of the special effects company ILM and turned it into what we know today as Pixar.
>>164 It'll have to get a lot colder to be as cool as Cool TAK.
>>206 Yeah, it would have been nice to get some more information out of him, but as long as he was alive, he was a figurehead for the regime holdouts. Hopefully with him head the holdouts will surrender and less lives will be lost in his service. The Libyan people need to be able to move on and take control of their country, and if foreign interests must suffer to that end, then so be it.
>>206 When Macbook Air launched, engineers in Japanese electronics makers slashed it saying like "we can make thinner, lighter products at much lower price" or "look at this excessive use of materials and screws."
What I thought was, "men, it's not the reason why people are excited about it these companies need much time to come out from Galapagos and start creating attractive products." After 3 or 4 years, nothing has been changed.
>>202 If I can live till 150 at the physical and mental conditions I have right now, I definitely want to, regardless of the state of the world. But, if not, I don't know.
>>153 I'd say most people here are aware that Samsung is a Korean company, but other Korean companies are sometimes confused with Japanese companies. One such example was a question on some quiz where the answer implied that Hyundai was a Japanese motor company. As for LG, it's not widely known here that they are Korean. Most people think LG stands for "Life's Good", which is their advertising slogan here, rather than "Lucky Goldstar".
I have watched Aljazeera TV recently. I wanna say firmly this. Don't show dead bodies too much! Too bad habit. I don't know why they like to show them. Are these tendency peculiar to areas where people believe in monotheism?
Me: hey, you look so boring American: what? Me: I said you look boring American: um you mean bored?? Me: no, I mean you look boring (smile) American: fuck you Me: T-T
>>216 They show dead bodies because the uncertainty of the situation requires it. If there's no proof that someone is dead, their supporters will believe they are still alive but in hiding.
I mean, some English learners confuse these two words. Like when they mean to say something like "hey what's up. you look bored", they say "your boring" or whatever. It could be a misunderstanding, so be careful when you use them. That's what I wanted to say. But anyways, it's just a shitty joke and I posted it without thinking much(◎_◎;) fogeeeeeeeet>_<
>>225 Yeah I did same thing sometimes!! Every time I made basic mistakes like that, I felt like I want to die ! But nobody doesn't care as long as they know we are learning English actually..
We. as the non-Japanese JPOP fans. I love JPOP. That includes many Japanese Rock, Pop and Hip Hop artists from Japan. Everywhere I go I talk about Japanese Pop. Then again, I talk about Swedish, German, Russian pop too. www
>>206 I wonder if Tony Blair is suspected of taking bribes or anything from him or just getting involved with economic trades, say, in the oil industries?
Personally, I can't bring myself to watch Qadhafi's body even on TV (I'm not 201). Seems like the picture(s) was/were broadcast on TV. How come they weren't censored? Guess that doesn't have good influences on kids, at least.
>>213 I've recently watched on TV a Japanese TV reporter asking some people in Europe if they know Samsung is a Korean company and the result is that 4 out of 10 people, though I'm not sure exactly where in Europe the survey was conducted, say it is a Japanese company. Hmm, it's probably due to their advertisements, I guess.
I think classicl music learner or player are often acquiring other language I have played classical guitar also piano. well playing violin sonata & paltita of bach in my opinion, baroque music is well suitable for the guitar however ,the piece that has sing-line like modern pieces hardly resound with guitar because of volume problem
>>248 You are so privileged to be able to play Bach. Do you think it is an instrument or performer problem? Do you mean the sound doesn't resonate properly?
You comment reminded me of Ashida Mana chan, who is also fond of dancing to the music of Kara. Kara is one of the K-pop stars, who consists of five pretty girls. Of course, I like their music, too.
With the exception of Shinee, I don't listen to KPOP at all. With JPOP, the feeling is so much different, the appeal is more direct but subtle. I also follow bands from other countries who have that sort of appeal. But for me, JPOP is one way of understanding the sophisticated culture of yours. Even if it is idol music that you look down on, is interesting to me. Because everything is coded so differently, so unusually, that is why it is so refreshingly different.
BTW I found this clip of KyonKyon from last summer, isn't she gorgeous? I don't like the host, nor his singing but K2 just SHINES. What an amazing character. I would be very happy if a kind Japanese person could translate the essence of what she is saying. I can understand the first section, where she talks about her 16 year old part; then she mentions marriage, that bit, I do not understand.
Kara are very good looking and talented, but when the queen of KPOP is undoubtedly BOA.
I think music is all about life energy, if you can describe it well, and get into the mind of the audience, and move them emotionally, then you are making great music. Because mood varies from individual to individual, also with time; and because emotional perception differs, from nation to nation, there will be different tastes in music.
I think most of us look for music that maps to our emotions. If we find it does, we derive pleasure from it.
>>252 It is because KPOP is so much more catchy, repetitive and easier to move to than JOP songs. The tune "lodges into" your brain. I saw many small kids dancing to DBSK songs on youtube.
Lately, I've heard shameful news that one of my university's students confessed comitting drunken driving on her own twitter page. Needless to say, the tweetings have been unveiled by someone. Sigh...
I'm so sad and embarrassed. Why did she do such silly things? I guess she thought her confession might not be unveiled in public. But, as you all know, this internet world is filled with many dangers..
All she should've done is to know the fact. Ah... Incidentally, I've never done such thing before. I'm a good guy! Yah. Why?I don't have driver's license. I don't wanna buy car now. I think I'm good enough to using train and bicycle.
>>263 yeah I'm actually studying now! but I will come here and make a post as often as I can because it helps me to motivate myself more! It's not fun studying alone
"My first 5 or 6 songs were not cheery, they were songs with dark tones. But they (people behind her, like talent agency who try to sell her perhaps ?) seemed to thought the tones of thsese songs hadn't had reflect her real character. So from then on, the tone of her songs changed drastically to cheerful ones."
Asked if she still remembers choreographies of her songs, she replied, "I don't remember them much anymore. Maybe I wasn't serious about choreographies.
4:33-5:35 She talked with the man (ken Hirai) about the song he covers in the music TV show. ----His cover song----- Asked about how she wants to live her own life as a person or as a person in show business, she replied, "I'm working really hard like everybody around my age. You know, the harder you work, the more you are paid. When I was young, I didn't know at all on what I wanted to spend money I earned. Now I'm getting older and if you go into, say, your forties, you begin to feel less confident about yourself (in terms of physical attractiveness). So to complement the lost (physical) attractiveness, I buy a dress if it's my kind of dress, without hesitation right on the spot.
The man said, "You have earned enough (to buy whatever you want since you were younger) in the first place." She replied, "(Even if I have earned much as a successful artist, )I was less materialistic when I was younger.
Talking about her time after retirnment when she gets old, "I definately want to avoid dying alone." (Translator note: Dying alone in a house/apartment is kind of a social problem here in Japan. In urban areas, especially, communications and ties with neighbors are weak so sometimes old people was found dead alone in a house/apartment without being noticed for days, weeks or even monthes. That's the complete opposite of the death surround by family members.)
"Fortunately I have lots of unmarried friends so I plan to work really hard and save lots of money and become rich so that I can buy the whole apartment units of one building. And I want to make sort of like a commune with my unmarried friends."
Asked, "You already have enough money to do that," she replied, "Not really, I need to save steadily one by one. I want to make a nursing home like that with young couple living on the first floor of the building."
----------11:00------ I gave you the overview of 00:00 to around 11:00, nearly half of the video. I need to sleep now. I'll do the rest when I have time tomorrow, no today already. The time slider might not be so accurate by the way...
"with a young couple living on the first floor of the building to take care of the old people living in the nursing home, including Kyon2 ." is what she meant. She wants the young coulple to work as a caregiver or somthing. She is just half jokingly showing this retirenment plan. Maybe she's more serious than I think, though.
Asked about any ideas or plans about going out with a man and getting married again, she replied, "I'm becoming to care less about such things. But I'm sure it was a good thing that I experienced marriage in my life. Looking back, I was fortunate to be married with a nice person. I think I have my ideal traditional image of a woman in my mind, which I want to fit the image if I can, but as I have been working, I cant become such a woman. It's my problem but I end up being dissappointed with myself because I can't be such a woman. In retrospect, I should have retired from show business after getting married (so that I can be a good housewife)
The man said, "That whould have been sad news for your fans." She replied, "That's what my husband said to me, too back then. (so I didn't leave showbusiness) He said you should continue to work (for fans)." Then she told about how difficult it is to balance work and time spent with husband.
---------his song---------
17:20 The man said, "I heard that you spend your birthday alone every year. Is that right?" Kyon2 replied, "Yes, that's true. Since I'm 20 years old or so, I spend my birthday alone. Back then my agency asked me what I wanted for birthday and I told them I wanted a day-off on my birthday. And actually I spent the birthday alone on the year. I felt very comfortable, spending my birthday alone. I wondered why I felt comfortable. The answer was, to me, birthday is, in essence, not something being celebrated by anybody in my opinion. It's more of something you're grateful for on your own. So I made it a rule to be grateful for my birth on my birthday every year. And on every birthday, I decide how I should spend the next 365 days from the birthday. I don't buy a birthday cake. I don't make gorgeous dinner. I just read a book and spend the day in no special way."
Asked about if she has spent each and every birthday alone, she replied, "To be honest, I have spent the day with boyfriend a few times."
------his song------
The man said, "My impression on you is that you seldom get angry and you are calm all the time." She replied, "Yeah, maybe you're right. When I'm in a situation where one person could make me angry, I sort of analyze why the person behaved like that and before going beyond anger limit, I usually concludes that the person wasn't ill-intentioned.
The man asked, "Have you ever gotten angry to the extent you shout to a person?" She jokingly replied, "My mother Yumi, often gets on my nerves. She loves playing Pachinko (Japanese gamble, looks like a vertical pinball machine) and when she was at my place, she took away some money of mine which were placed on the table to play Pachinko. After I came back from work, I found the money is gone and I asked her where is the money. She goes 'huh? I spent the money on Pachinko." And I was like 'huh?" and she said 'No problem. I'm sure I can get back the money if I go and play Pachinko again the first thing in the morning.' I said to her, 'that was part of my hard-earned money. Do you understand how hard I work?' She was like, 'Sorry, I'll never do that. I'm really sorry...' But I know she'll do that again. She's a lovable person after all."
I have a question. In hot spot, how can I say ”この場所は今とても危険です” in English? It is translated "This place is very dangeorous now." in certain game. But it sounds weird to me.
>>296 I don't have iPod. My sister gave me Walkman so I'm using it now. I read some reviews of Walkamn on Amazon. The Walkman users who posted the reviews seemed to be very satisfied with the sound quality of Walkman.
I didn't know the sound quality of iPod is worse than Walkman. If I could choose either of them, I would have chosed iPod. That's because having iPod looks cooler than having Walkman. The brand image of Apple and its products go beyond Walkman. Walkman's reign in music industry is now replaced by Apple's products.
But as a Japanese, I want to suuport and root for Sony.
>>296 Walkman, mainly because the sound quality is superior to that of the iPod. As >>297 correctly mentions, the image associated with the iPod goes beyond that of the Walkman, but I prefer performance over design. Maybe because I work in marketing and am familiar with their methods.
Also, the iPod is manufactured in Chinese factories under appalling conditions for the workers, with negligence causing the deaths of workers due to poor machine maintenance. There have been scores of suicides at the factories too (14 in 2010 alone), so now some of the factories are equipped with suicide prevention netting, and a clause to "not kill yourself" has been added to the contract.
>>301 I heard the shocking news for the first time. I wonder what would happen if a worker violate the clause? Their relatives or parents have to pay some money to the company that runs the factory? Maybe salary of the month when he commit a suicide isn't paid or something like that...
If not, such a clause doesn't make sense at all, does it? Nobody can stop a person from commiting a suiside if they decided to do that.
This video shows how difficult for average Japanese to pronounce r and l sounds distinguishingly by using voice recognition service called Siri equipped in iPhone4S.
By the way Siri means ass in Japanese. So the name of the service cause a little bit of a fuss in Japan. Like the name of iPad resembles woman's hygene products for period and made a fuss in US.
>>302 I think the clause just states that the company will not accept any legal liability for the suicide, which would prevent relatives taking legal action.
>>304 To be fair, they state that only English, French and German is supported in Siri right now, with support for Japanese (and some other languages) coming into effect sometime next year.
Even though Google have had voice commands in Android for a while, it doesn't offer the extent of control as Siri. However, Google's voice recognition is excellent (as demonstrated in Google Translate Mobile's conversation mode), and even recognises my poor attempts at Japanese (most of the time).
Siri's co-founder left Apple yesterday, not sure if that has any implications yet.
<Excerpts> "The Japanese Twittersphere immediately took to calling the voice control app the three-letter word for derriere with some abandon. The kanji character 尻 soon cropped up below Siri as a trending topic on Twitter here."
>>308 Siri and google's voice recognition are both great although they still have a long way to go. But the boice recoginiton technologies they have now bring us better technology life even now. It's good to know you tried it in Japanese.
>>315 It's post+ing. Post means (掲示板などに)投稿する、書きこむ in this context.
>>304 Did a bit of reading on Siri just now, and it would be interesting to see if it works better set to British English, since the Japanese pronunciation of such words is more similar to the way we pronounce them.
>>325 It has settings for British English, Australian English, and American English. I think the difference is just the ability to differentiate between accents.
>>321 Though it translates literally to "toilet water" from French, it comes from the verb 'toilet', which means something like 'to groom' or 'to dress'. It's a lightly scented perfume.
>>326 Oh, is that right. Even Australian accent. Thanks for the imput. As you say, I'm curious about how Siri reacts when British people pronounce "work" as shown in the video in American English setting.
I found an interesting travel serivice. You don't have to worry even if you don't have friends in Japan. This hands on face to face travel events makes your experience in Japan interesting ten-folds.
>>329 That site is somewhat strange. There are quotes placed around words in a seemingly random fashion.

Could you recommend me a good movie made in 00s and 10s? Since I watched lots of movies, please choose a minor one. My favorite director is Ridley Scott and Christopher Nolan.
>>332 Your English is good there. I'd only make very minor changes: I -> I've / I have director is -> directors are (since you've mentioned more than one)
It's difficult to make recommendations without knowing taste, but based on the directors, you like movies with both action and story, and not necessarily with a real-life background.
Anyway, I'd recommend Inland Empire, Zodiac, Children of Men, maybe The New World (2006... there are so many with that name). I'd recommend The Departed, but only because it's an English-language version of Infernal Affairs, which Scorcese shamelessly stole. The original was much better (but not in English). Hopefully you haven't seen those already.
>>347 This, this, a million times this! Oh man, am I so glad I bought a kotatsu. My cats love it too. They're really rare in America though. Nobody knows what it is, and I had a hard time explaining it to my boss.
Anyway, whoever it was that invented the kotatsu needs to have a holiday in his honor. By my calculations, at the end of this winter, the kotatsu will have paid for itself by the gas savings alone. (Natural gas for heating is very expensive here, and the gas company wants to raise the rates again this winter...)
when I was at NITORI(big supermarket in JPN for those who buy convenience goods, furniture and so on..) I saw a strange kotatsu set ,which were ordinary chairs and table coverd kotatsu-buton(futon).
>>270>>271>>277>>278 Thank you thank you thank you! You made me very happy! I love KyonKyon. She is such an awesome artist. She is sooo different from a lot of artists. I like her sense of humour and free thinking ways.
I was saddened to hear of her marriage wishes not coming true and retirement plans in that interview. She talks too nicely of a man who cheated on her. I used think not so favourably of Nagase MAsatoshi, especially when I heard he left KyonKyon for a younger woman. But tonight I watched Mainichi Okaasan, he is a very good actor. It is really saddening to watch them sign divorce papers on screen. There is such an element of reality in that scene.
But the film left with me such a warm feeling. It was so moving! It was sad to hear she would be living alone in a commune of unmarried friends. She sounds as if she is in her eighties! She is still young! I hope the man who loves her most can give her a good life and she would not be unhappy or alone all the time. Thanks again for your kind translation.
>>356 I'd say it's just she wasn't a type of a woman who could retire from show business after getting married. Once you are on the spotlight and know the taste of honey, it's difficult to become an ordinary citizen.
If she was really serious about quitting show business and had determination to dedicate her all time to doing housework and child raring, she could have done that. But that could have meant to give up all of the attentions drawn to her. To become an ordinary citizen is hard once you have been in the spotlight. The nature of attention whore never goes away.
>>362 Most unlikely but lists of hospitals where some of their staff understand English is around on the Internet. Even not on the net if you go to city hall, they give you such info. If your city is relatively big, then there is a network of English speaking people, too.
If you end up living in rural areas, not much is expected.
Hello, goodmorning. Today is said the end of the world. But if an apocalypse doesn't come today, people who said this prediction in public must kill them- selves.
>>379 Congratulations! May your life be happy forever.
>>381 haha. really? It's the common way we have noodle. Miso is quite popular ingredient with Japanese as you know. Maybe Nagoyanian and Sapporer angry with your posting. Those are among the most popular districts.
If you get ill, they have the NHS system here. Usually residents pay nothing (comes out of the national insurance we have to pay) but visiting foreigners need to pay I think. You can also go private.
Going back to KyonKyon being a housewife, there is a drama of a house wife who wants to be a shadow of his husband. I understand it is a different culture but want to know, do husbands really want their wives to be like that in Japan?
>>398 I think that the problem is a little related to religion each people have. Japanese have traditionally the belief of nature and ancestor, called "Shinto". "Shinto" has a lot of deities. One of deities is "Amaterasu-ohomikami". This deity is the symbol of the sun and exists in the center of "Shinto". And this is a woman. She isn't pushy. I think this thing is related to national characteristics so much.
In japan, the running person of family or society is basically women. What is needed is naturally shown to girls from childhood. So Japan is often called a maternal society. Those who have power is MOTHER in Japan. You should think there is always mother beyond men.
Japanese men don't have power much as strong as English. And Japanese ordinary women don't as pushy as English. It's difficult to explain! Sorry for poor.
There's a term "big guy" and my dictionay explains it like this. "A term of endearment, usually addressed toward an all-around good male person."
Q1. He, who is addressed as "big guy" doesn't have to physically big, does it? Q2. Is it the same as "Teddy bear"? A man described as "Teddy bear" has to be physicall big? Q3. "Teddy bear" and "big guy" can be used interchangably? (although this question is already answered in Q1 and Q2)
>>407 I've heard "Teddy Bear" used to describe a large man who is a pushover to women, seen as cuddly like a teddy bear is. It's rare, and somewhat demeaning.
I've also heard "big guy" used to refer to bosses/CEOs/etc, and "the big guy upstairs" to refer to God.
>>402 Jerking off once a day makes me feel refreshed. I never regret doing anything good like that. Because I’ve already had a wife, children, and a grand-child :)
I've got a lot to do in the rest of my life. So I have to keep me alive.
>>414 I'm in my early fifties, however, younger than you imagine. You will know when you reach the same age of me. Anyway, as you know, Japan's future depends on how much alive older people are.
Hello I'm from UK and live in Tokyo. I love 2chan culture and want to join you guys. よろしくおねがいします. But it seems this isn't the time for chat with lots of people so I'll come back tomorrow. Good night everyone
>>429 What brought you to Japan if I may ask? Probably assistant English teacher?
I guess your parents back home were extremely worried about you because of the nuclear crisis. Did you evacuate to UK for a while after 3/11 like many expats in Japan did?
>>447 Oh no, I often come to Japan because of the business matter. Now I've been on holiday and staying in Tokyo for a fortnight. Of course my family was worried about me coming here after the earthquake but not now
>>448 Is that right. You first wrote, "Hello I'm from UK and live in Tokyo." "Hello I'm from UK and am visiting/staying Tokyo." sounds more like it to me, although I'm an English learner and I may be wrong.
A British and bussiness reminds me of the ex Olympus president who were just fired a week ago or so. This has lead to a big scandal involiving dubious mergers, which even FBI and British authorities has started investigation.
If you are staying in Tokyo and Otaku, you can enjoy Akihabara to your heart's content.
"I often come to Japan because of the business matter" sounds strange. "I often come to Japan for business matters" is more natural and sounds less like an English learner. Shouldn't "I'm from UK" be "I'm from the UK"?
'Stay' makes more sense than 'live' but I wanted to say 'I live in Japan' because this isn't a business trip but a private one plus I've been staying in the guest house as if living here. Also, I could say 'for business matters' but I chose 'because of business matters' with no reasons.
I'm half French half Japanese and studied at the international school then graduated from the University as an english nation but maybe I'm not because my English doesn't sound natural to you
In a sense I actually don't know which country I belong to
I guess I shouldn't have come here. I don't want you to argue but just wanted to enjoy 2chan like Japanese Otaku. I'll study Japanese then come back here someday. Sorry to confuse you. Wanted to be Japanese but failed hahaha
I'll go to Roppongi tonight. Maybe Akihabara next week. Bye everyone, よい一日を:)
>>441 It's far better than finger size...sometimes called blowable size. Does my English sound strange? Sorry about that. I'm Japanese who never have been to abroad in my long life.
today in TOEIC test, I was claimed to be noisy. I acknowledge that I tend to move a little when I concentrate on something. and because of my bad posture, I tried to remedy it. When listening section ended , people who was in front of and behind me changed their seat. I felt sorry for it and changed my seat not to disturb people around me. but after that , I can't concentrate on the test at all. I've never experienced problem like this.....to be honest, I wanted to tell them lots of things...but I can't do anything.
I don't think so. It's a careless mistake, judging from your English. If you had paid more attention to your writing, you must have found the error easily.
also, you guys speak a completely phonetic language. Everything should be in Hiragana or something, not Kanji. Someone should also make a language where you have to use different coloured pens to show what you mean.
I had a pot of minced sardines"いわしのつみれ鍋"with Ponzu sauce. The ingredients are chinese cabbage, leek, velvet shank, noodles made from konnyaku and tofu. The soup stock is kelp.
>>530 It's what you say when you knock on someone's door on Halloween. You expect to get either scared (a trick) or candy (a treat). Almost nobody does the scaring anymore, and most people have forgotten about it.
Recently Halloween is forbidden in many communities due to religious or safety concerns. It's a dying tradition.
Today I was talked to by friend of a foreigner. It was sudden for me so I couldn't reply in English well. I think my English skill is very short n there are a few opportunities to speak English from me in Japan. Very anxious.
>>540 Don't worry. Next time a foreigner tries to speak to you, just say "fuck off dude". He will be so impressed by how native your English is he will run away!
>>498 I don't think "trick or treat" necessarily implies sex... at least not here. If you say it to someone as an adult, such as at your office, people will think you are weird or something. Unless it's a joke, then maybe you won't be as embarrassed.
>>497 Have you ever tried reading Japanese without Kanji? It's very difficult.
>>565 Do you mean a native English speaker? If that's the case, yes, there are several native English-speakers that lurk/post in this thread (myself included).
I'm not sure I understand your question, though...
>>563 because it makes this thread's atmosphere more frankly. you guys tend not to hesitate to write tribal things at here not worring about english mistakes.
>>565 I post from work. I can't post on 2ch from home, my ISP is banned. Mostly because I'm bored, but maybe something I post will be useful to someone. I think it's interesting to talk to people from other places. (I also have an amateur radio license.)
Let me write down what I learned yesterday to make sure i understand them all go mad, go red, go grey, go blind, go deaf, go crazy, go bad, go bold etc.. Go is used for changes in people's personality, appearance, and physical abilities. The pages of the book have gone yellow over the years. (slowly color change) turn red, turn white, turn gold
everyday verb make and do and common phrases with them make is bacically about producing something, do is about performing an action. make an excuse, make an effort(to do), make a change(to), make an arrangement make an improvement (to)etc.. do harm, do my hair, do an experiment, do work etc..
When you say "single title" got added to Radio, what does that mean? Radio station has started to play it on air or it got in hit chart of the radio station?
You can insert whatever single title name in "single title"
>>583 I'm glad that my post helped !! I just started to use this textbook and workbook, where I have learned what I wrote in>> 578. The book is well organized and fun to study! If your interested in, check out some of the books written by Michel McCarthy, Felicity O'dell!
>>605 I'm a native English speaker. While the first sentence, "I've been studied hard these days," is technically proper, it implies that you were being studied, like you were a scientific experiment or something.
If you were trying to tell someone you've been busy studying, the second sentence is the one you want to use.
(Should I make a tripcode to post here? I suppose it would be helpful if I'm offering advice, but I'm not a fan of using them...)
>>612 It depends on who you ask. If you are lazy and feel the world owes you everything you desire, then there is nothing wrong with socialism. If you are a hard worker and want to earn everything you desire, then you don't have enough time to think about socialism. If you are a politician or banker and steal everything you desire, then there is everything wrong with socialism.
>>626 I sometimes do with an intention to make the person mad. It's really effective. That implies that if you like a thread, you shouldn't do it there.
>>630 We usually send christmas cards instead, which say "...and a happy new year!" at the end. So it's a christmas card and a new year's card at the same time.
>>644 I'm in Yamanashi Prefecture. Here is 900m above sea level. Nowadays quite cold early in the morning. But today, it is pretty warm during the day.
You should put tintin back as it's getting cool soon.
I think the name of "dick" seems to be something scared and wild. But the name of "tintin" seems to be so pretty and cute. Maybe women in the world would think it someting like sweets.
I suggest we spell it "timtim" or "timetime". Sounds far better and sweeter.
In the official English subtitles by Crunchyroll, they make puns out of squid related words.
'Invasion (侵略)' becomes 'Inkvasion' (Ink meaning イカ墨) 'Quickly' becomes 'Squidly'
It sounds a bit strange, but there's nothing else they could do really. There's a lot of arguments amongst English speaking anime fans as to whether the puns are good or not.
>>751 "Hold on a second" means you are telling someone to wait. It doesn't literally mean one second, just some short amount of time. Typically you are telling them to wait for you to say/do something.
>>746 I couldn't believe you failed to pass the test. Judging from your posts in this thread, I thought your English was good enough to pass it.
I saw the breakdown of your score. All you have to do is improving your listening skill to pass pre-1 grade, right? You are almost there. Just by improving the score of the listening section, you'll pass the test. Keep up the good work.
>>790 why do you learn 2language in same time? i cant learn 1 language too. i wanna use furuent english soon. please tell me speedy faster learn point.
>>792 Native English speaker here. All three generally imply the same thing. Usually when you ask someone to wait for such a small amount of time, they will understand you don't expect them to take it literally.
Saying any of the above could accurately mean, "Please wait/hold on for a little while."
All three pretty much mean the same thing. If you tell someone to wait for such a small amount of time, they will understand you don't mean it literally.
All three sentences you listed could mean, "Please wait/hold on for a little while."
>>793 I'm only studying German. I live in England and don't study English that hard at the moment. There're only German classes for English speakers here and that's why I have to study any languages in English. German grammar is similar to English.
I suppose leaning German in English is easier than using Japanese.
>>803 "Nice/glad to see you" would be said if you see someone you have already met before. "Nice/glad to meet you" would be said the first time you meet someone.
Nice, glad, or good could all be used correctly, the sentence would mean the same thing.
An Irishman, an Englishman and a Scotsman are caught in Saudi Arabia drinking. "Under Saudi law you are sentenced to 30 lashes before deportation,” said the prison guard, “You are entitled to something on your back, what would you like?" The English man asked for a Burberry coat. After the lashing, he was taken in agony to the airport. Next came the Scotsman. "Under Saudi law you are sentenced to 30 lashes before deportation,” said the prison guard, “You are entitled to something on your back, what would you like?" "Nothing" said the Scotsman and, after receiving his lashes, he spat on the ground in disdain and was taken to the airport. The guards then came to the Irishman. "Under Saudi law you are sentenced to 30 lashes before deportation,” said the prison guard, “You are entitled to something on your back, what would you like?" "Oh", replied the Irishman, "I'll take the Scotsman."
An Englishman, a Scotsman and an Irishman were marooned on a dessert island. One day an old lantern washed up on the beach, and the Englishman picked it up and wiped off the dirt. As he did so, a genie suddenly appeared and vowed to grant them each one wish. The Englishman thought for a moment and then said, “I wish I was back in my garden at home sipping a gin and tonic.” The genie said, “Your wish is my command,” and the Englishman disappeared in a flash of smoke. The Scotsman thought for a moment and said, “I wish I was sitting in my favorite pub in Edinburgh drinking a large whisky.” The genie said, “Your wish is my command,” and the Scotsman disappeared in a flash of smoke. The Irishman looked around for a short while, and then said, “It’s lonely here alone. I wish the other two were here.”
>>817 hey you! i want to look more hardcore situations. for example:men insert ladys mouth and his dick go to stomach. ladys eyes gone white and dropping tear.
and more. ladys into crazy because she used drug and alchol. she so into high. and screeming. pissing.
damn, i don't feel like doing anything productive today. but i got to start working on a project due tomorrow morning. (i am in central timezone in the US, so i got a plenty of time in some sense.)
>>841, >>842 How is(was) universities in the US? I'm a student in The UK and never been to America so I'm interested in the life there:D Someday I wanna visit there
I don't think so. Serious discussions need a certain level of English fluency. Most of us are its learners who are on the way to such a level, so strictly speaking, we don't have what it takes to talk about serious things.
But Now that the lunch time is over, I'm feeling better!! Every Tuesday I have lunch alone because of the class schedule. It's really weird that when I'm with someone or in a group of people, I feel kind of tired , but when I'm alone, I start feeling lonely.
and i absolutely disagree with this guy. writing english is the only way to learn how to learn english. so we got to write.
but there is one thing we have to keep in mind. that is, if we want to write about something in english, we need to read english books/articles about the subject. as english is our second language, obtaining knowledge through english is ineffective, and sometimes frustrating. but there is no way around.
>>873 I think that English textbooks are far more sophisticated than Japanese ones. One of the advantages by learning English is to get able to make use of the information written in English.
Do you guys have a novel written in English that you strongly recommend to me? I have finished some Sidney Sheldon's works, and want to step up. Just so you know, The Great Gatsby by Fitzgerald was a little too difficult for me.
>>900 I think "check O out" is used especially when you examine something attractive or interesting. I wonder if "check O " is used only to examine something to see if it's correct or safe. I'm sorry that I might not be good at teaching.
>>901 It comes from library usage. When you take a book from a library, it's "checked out" When you bring the book back again, it's "checked in" This is also used in other situations when an object is loaned out, like company cars at work.
"Check in" and "check out" are also used for hotels. When you arrive, you check in to get a room. When you leave, you check out so they know the room is free again.
When you are supposed to see someone before you can do something else, that can be a "check in" as well. For example, when a non-student is visiting a school, he must visit the office to get a pass before being allowed to do anything else. The signs say "Visitors must check in with the office for a pass!"
There's yet another usage in military and aviation - "check out" can be used to mean a test. For example, if I want to rent an airplane, I have to take a short test in the airplane to demonstrate my ability to fly. This is called a "check out". For example, "I need a check out in a Cessna single." - "This guy wants checked out in a 172."
See how messy just two words can be? English is a freaking train wreck. I don't understand how anyone thinks this is a sensible system. But like they say, you to go to war with the army you have, not the army you want...
I'm crazy about Kazumin. She is a member of the NOGIZAKA46 which is the rival of the AKB48 . and, her real name is Kazumi Takayama. What a very very very very very cuuuuuute girl!!! I have never see more beautiful girl than her.
>>914 No way, radiation doesn't work THAT fast, except in absolutely absurd doses. If he got a dose that large it would be detectable with a dosimeter or geiger counter.
Christmas is coming up!!(still over one month away but after Halloween there's no major events ! ) Christmas songs being endlessly played in the cafe make me excited(⌒-⌒) I'm trying to remember what I was doing last Christmas, but literally I can't remember anything !
Waiting for my friend @ Starbucks I think it's better to order hot drinks if you stay in staba for a long time. A container for hot drinks have a cover, so they can't see how much your drink is left..that way you don't feel guilty after you finish off your coffee..
I need an opportunity to speak English but it's kind of hard to find out. I can read, wright down, and listen to English through the internet but there's no chance to speak out. The best idea I guess is to make foreign friends or something but I have no idea how to do that. Do you guys have any idea? Help me out.
So, there are some cafes or pubs that foreign people are around. That makes sence. Ok I will find them out somehow. Thank you guys I really appreciate your help!
>>936 "I'm playing tennis for 3 years" means you are playing tennis since 3 years ago to right now without a break and not finish yet. In Japanese, "私は3年間テニスを(休みなく)プレイし続けている" If you would like to say "私は3年間テニスを(習慣的に)している(今も続けている)". Then you should say "I play tennis for 3 years".
"I've been playing tennis for 3 years" means you are playing tennis for 3 years, but you finished it already. In Japanese, "私は3年間テニスを(休みなく)プレイし続けていた(今はしていない)" If you would like to say "私は3年間テニスを(習慣的に)していた(今はしていない)". Then you should say "I (have played tennis for 3 years" or "I (used to/would) play tennis for 3 years".
>>970 "Thank you for teaching me" sounds weird to me. I think "Thank you for your advice" is right.
>>966 You can speak English on Skype. And there are the lectures talking with English-speaking persons on Skype. If you get interested in it, you can google it.
>>970 You'll laugh at me for saying this, but I can't read Japanese. That's why I only read and post in this thread.
("What do you call someone who speaks three languages? Trilingual. And what do you call someone who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What about someone who speaks only one language? Oh, that's an American.")
>>976 Well, you've seen baseball in Japanese, right? You could just watch the game. You know how the game is played, so just pick out the words you recognize. When you see something happen you know the Japanese word for, and you hear an English word you don't know, chances are good that the English word means the same thing as the Japanese. This won't help you follow the commentary though.
>>986 That's not a good idea. It will affect your concentration and attention. Go to bed now and wake up before 10 in the morning. Don't take a nap during the daytime. Then you will feel super tired and sleepy at night and can go to sleep !
Higashi-san Thanks for the advice. Okay, I will follow your idea... I will set my clock alarm at 10 am. When i get up at 10, i will go out right away so i wont take a nap.
I was getting ready to sleeeeep I'm happy that you guys are still up this late/early! >>992 Yep! I have class at 11. But I'm going to skip it.. >>993 Your welcome! I hope you can fix your sleep pattern!! ^____^
Yeah it's good but I'm writing an essay now.. I know I should've started earlier but I always leave things to the last minute hah.. Let's gambarou :D good luck!
995 Good luck with your exams!! Maybe your feeling a bit nervous and it keeps you from sleeping. Don't worry, you can get as much as 3 hours of sleep !!
