Are any native speakers here? I'd like to know as many common Christmas greetings as possible.
Your originals would also be appreciated.
I assume there would be differences between American and Britain and elsewhere.

"Happy Holidays" is the most common greeting in USA besides "Merry
Christmas", but it is a very 'safe' sort of greeting used by
advertisers and people who don't really know each other well
enough to know each other's religion.

Less common, but more interesting:
"Yuletide Greetings" - An old-fashioned greeting that makes reference
to the pagan festival called 'Yule' which preceeded Christmas.
Christmas sort of absorbed Yule, so some people used to (or still) refer to
Christmas as 'Yule'. Some Yule traditions got incorporated into
Christmas, like the Yule Log.

I can't think of any other common greetings, but you can also
pretty much just throw some words together from christmas carols
to make up your own corny greeting.
I'll try it - "Good tidings of joy and may peace be in your hearts"
BAM, you could print that on a greeting card.

The Yule stuff was WIKIpedic knowledge, actually, I didn't know those yule
details off the top of my head.

Oh, also burning a "Yule log" in a fireplace is a common Christmas tradition, but for
Americans without fireplaces, there is usually a TV station that plays nothing
but a video loop of a burning fireplace, all Christmas day long. It's actually
the best show on TV all year.

I don't know anything about Mithra, but googling it gives me references to
Zoroastrianism, from the middle east, so I doubt they are related. Yule
was a tradition of Germanic paganism (from northwest Europe). They apparently
still follow some Yule traditions in Sweden/Norway/Finland. (but probably not the old
traditions of spraying blood from animal sacrifices)

Decorating Christmas trees must have come from that German tradition, I presume.

From what I know Mithra used to be celebrated in the Roman Empire where Christanity first started to rise.

I myself have never been to the US so don't know much about how it is celebrated over there. My knowledge about Christmas is only through TV and the Internet.

Today, I introduce my terrible story to you. When I
saw a foreign porno website, the strange message
appeared. It was warning of Security shield. I didn't
know the security software(I didn't downloaded)but
the software said "Your computer is under threats
of virus."(Summary).
I was confused and clicked "Remove". Then the message
saying "Buy anti-spysoftware!" appeared.
But, the anti-spysoftware's price is so expensive! I wondered
why I had to pay for it, and serched for the information of it by
Yahoo! JAPAN. Finally, I noticed Security shield is fake security
software, namely computer virus. Oh my god...

So, I tried to remove it by system recovery and was successful
miraculously. Everybody, please be careful to the matherfuckin'
fake security software.

On the contrary, I love being solitary.

Today, I introduce my story of this year's Xmas to you.

Whenever he started groping his bag shadily I screamed and fled then horny raindeer poked me back.
When Santa Claus spread his arms and scared the child to stuff a child in his bag, bad child had gone frozen.
Santa Claus said he was just donating his gifts.

When I faced what he actually meant, I realized how hard it will be.

Once I was introduced a devorce addict president wanted copies saying he cares about my family's copy.
He had every likable attributes but often marries person who kind of he doesn't have to care for and it makes his wives unconfortable to the extent let her try every dangerous acts.
Once his detective reported a bottle of aflatoxin was missing from his wife's familiar's lab. Since then he can't eat at home. He now only expected copies from female and other than that he more and more doesn't want to care for.
I will have to worry him if he starts looking for possibles in internets anonymous.

Japan is far much smaller than US but it has diverse climates depending on
where you live from Hokkaido, where you study for a few weeks to Kagoshima
and Okinawa for that matter.

There is no rainy season in Hokkaido and summer there is comfortable when

to fall asleep without keeping AC turned on to cool your room at night.

In winter, you need thick jacket or coat to survive. Wearing a scarf and gloves
is the norm in the middle of winter.

There are no cockroaches in Hokkaido probably because their eggs can't survie cold winter there.

You guys in US and Europe and Australia and NZ use Facebook, using your real name quite a lot right?
I think the life of shut-ins in the countries is harder than that of shut-ins in Japan because
they feel islated both in real life and on Internet. If you don't have friends in real life,
you can't enjoy Facebook where how many friends you have doesn matter to
enjoy the SNS to the full.

In case of Japan, in Mixi, the largest SNS in Japan, people doesn't use real name
much so life in Mixi doesn't necessarily refelct how good your real life is,
so Mixi is far lot shut-ins friendly SNS.

Hello, I introduce my story of yesterday.
In my workplace I work as a part-time waiter, I made a drunk customer so angry.
Speaking of the detail, he asked me if the order of him was received for the staffs
in kitchen. And then I told to him "Did you check by using this touchpanel(Our sys-
tem of order is by touchpanel)?"
And I left there, but, after a little time, he called me and said "Hey, you, do you wanna
make me knock you!?" in anger. I didn't know why he did at first but apologized to him
not to make the troble bigger. But, he was still getting angry.
Then our manager came and asked him why he was getting angry.
He told to him "he(me) said such a saucy thing to me!". Our manager apologized to him
and the customer seeming like his friends around managed to calm him.
After the trouble, our manager called me to the kitchen and asked me "what did you say
to him and do you knowwhy he was getting so angry? I was very confused at his question,
and I answered timidly."Ah..., I don't know at all..."
And then he scold away at me about 50minutes... While he was scolding away at me, my mind
was so heavy and my eyesight was full of violet (I don't know the reason. it was by secreting
adrenaline?)Sigh, how loopy I am! So, I'm so blue now...
But, please don't worry. I'll be alright. I know everybody always make some mistake everyday.
So, it's not unusual. So, see you. Today, I'm gonna sleep tight.

A lot of my American friends said it's quit awkward to hear Japanese songs with English phrases.
They said that the bad pronunciation makes it worse.
I remember there was a Thai song that had some Japanese phrases in it and indeed it sounded very unnatural and awkward that I couldn't stop laughing.
The pronunciation was weird and the grammar was wrong.
It sounded like an illiterate moron.

I'm no so familiar with Heroes but, Hiro's collegue speak Japanese with

It's true that I'm hardly fluent, but find it much easier to read a
language I'm learning than to write or speak it. The same applies to
Russian... though it's much easier to input Japanese than Russian
because of the input mode. Anyway... reading can be done almost anywhere,
even with little motivation. Often, you don't even require a full grasp
of grammar to understand a sentence. Writing takes more effort and thought
because you generally do need a knowledge of sentence structure. And for
speaking, well, it helps to have at least two people. I'm now trying to
learn more about grammar in order to improve my writing, which is pretty

Since I drank way too much caffeine I feel like writing something.
I would like to outline one of the most important fundamental differences between Japanese and
English. I see these misused by both sides quite often.

In Japanese the phrase よろしく/どうぞよろしく/よろしくお願いします/ etc. are phrases that generally
express politeness toward the listener that literally translate to something like "please
remember me", "please treat me favourably", or whatever. Japanese is a language that developed
in a society that required explicit politeness, humility, and respect to properly support its
highly hierarchical society. Therefore, phrases like this are typical. But English, which developed
in a society of Vikings, barbarians, and later French people, has no such thing. The closest things
we have to honorifics are "please" and "thank you".

So, some phrases that have become standard politeness phrases in Japanese, simply do not exist in
English. As for my example, in a situation where you would say 「どうぞよろしく」, in English
you would often say nothing. Otherwise, you would use "Thank you" (such as when leaving someone's
presence assuming they did something for you), "Nice to meet you" (when meeting someone for the
first time, but this replaces both よろしく and はじめまして), or maybe "Regards" (at the end of
a formal letter).

The phrases "Please remember me" and "Please treat me favourably" are never used in English.

Similarly, 失礼します best translates to "Excuse me", but "excuse me" is also not used as often
as 失礼します is in Japanese. For example, when leaving a room, you would say "Bye" or "See ya"
if you won't be seeing the person for a while, or "Thank you" if they did something for you, or
something like that. "Excuse me" is usually used a) after sneezing, b) when leaving someone's
presence temporarily, or c) bumping into someone on the street.

Phrases like すみません、ごめんなさい、and 申し訳ありません all usually translate to "Sorry" or
"I apologize" (more formal), of course with exceptions (for example, すみません sometimes means
"Excuse me", in the sense of apologising). But I'm sure you all already know that.

"Polite" phrases such as 行ってきます、行ってらっしゃい、ただいま、and お帰りなさい would probably
be said in English as "Bye"/"See ya later", "Bye"/"See ya later", "I'm home", and "Welcome home"
or just "Hi". These phrases can vary substantially though because they're not bound by societal
restrictions like the Japanese phrases (more so) are.

Furthermore, いただきます and ご馳走さま do not really have counterparts in English. Usually in
those cases you say nothing. Perhaps for the last one "That was delicious", but that's only
if it actually was delicious and you want to comment that.

Well that's all I can think of. I'm sure most of you already know most of these things but I see
them misused a lot. Therefore, I used this opportunity to explain proper usage. If you actually read
all of this, I congratulate you.

come back home, or by kids/wife when their dad/husband come back home.
It's a daily phrase. Maybe I'm wrong but "Welcome home" is used for more
special occasion like when you were away from home for long absense or

One of the things I was surprised most recently is that Happy New Year

before a new year starts, you'd be told, "huh? it's not a new year yet. What
are you talking about?"

the person. If used that way, it is probably sarcastic. Which is why I also gave the translation
of "Hi". A person returning home from, say, school, would be greeted generally in the same

Some people pray before meals. Mostly it's families. For example, my family prays before each
meal that we all have together or if we have people at our house for dinner, but by myself I
never pray (I am a godless heathen, you see). It might be strange for a person by himself to
pray before a meal, but maybe not. Similarly I think it would be strange to do it in a
restaurant, but I may not speak for every American and it varies by region as well.

For temples, Todaiji and Horyuji are the must,

I use -m- and -ou only when I am sure that it is the established standard spelling.
However, for place names and personal names, I usually use -n- even though the
official spellings use -m-. It doesn't feel right somehow.

Anime community in the west seems to have adopted -ou, so I usually use it to spell
anime characters names, but for real people I always use -o.
So ZUN's Touhou is Touhou, but for other things named Touhou (such as companies and schools),
I would spell it Toho.

I prefer n though the pronunciation is m,

I rote wrong things. Shimbashi was actually just JR's official spelling and not of the town itself.
So the signs in the station say Shimbashi but road signs say Shinbashi. They should fix it.
I think it is something like a legacy from old generations as the people who use that method
are mostly old people. But I may be talking out of my ass.
