Hey!!! you NEETs, nerds, YouTube-link spammers, pedophiles, neo-Nazis, Yukorin enthusiasts, Nanako SOS admirers, Part-Time-Preachers, Diplomats' spoiled sons, losers who can't remember Kanji characters, Big-boobs fans, Weeaboos from all over the world, learners of Japanese who are too lazy to update their Japanese blogs very often, and cunning linguists. And let's celebrate the comeback of the Internet-addicted housewife.
I'll start with a question...how would you guys recommend learning Kanji? Just memorize memorize memorize? I have been going for maybe a month but I can only recognize 75 characters (at the very most). But I have been slacking at it.
>>2 It's a difficult question. But one thing I can tell you is that even a native speaker of Japanese go through hard time learning Kanji when they are a kid. Usually, we start learning Kanji after entering elementary school. When I was a 1st grader, I often thought why I have to learn kanji when if everything was written in Hiragana, I wouldn't have to learn Kanji. So I thought, "abolish all kanji." So it is natural that you think it's hard to learn kanji.
>Just memorize memorize memorize?
That's basically it. We practice writing kanji a lot when we are kids. So everybody needs their share of lots of practicing. I would recommend you remember stroke order of Kanji correctly when practicing writing.
As I said, basically it's just about "memorize memorize memorize" but there's a something that help you learn with interest. 海(sea) 涙(tear) 汗(sweat) 泳ぐ(swim) As you can see, the three strokes on the left of each kanji means something related to water. So these kanji with the component means something related to water. This kind of rule(I don't know if rule is the right word) might stimulate your interest in Kanji.
>>7 The housewife is 米人. There was a Bostonian who frequented here whose handle name is 米人.
She used to be here, and disappeared because 2ch banned her IP address. Then she came back, then now she disappeared again maybe because 2ch banned her access again.
ベイエリア人 and "firestar" come here sometimes, too. ベイエリア人's IP is blocked at home but he sometimes access to 2ch from university. イギリス人 is maybe lurking. He sometimes shows up when he has time.

Why do American people ask them ' do you speak English?' even though they don't speak proper English. They should say 'American' not English. So I would answer nope.
If you really, reaaally wanted the thread title true to most of what's happening here, then it must be "Chat in Engrish" by definition, for all I know. Unfortunately, that's bloody true.
>>17 Maybe you're right, but there're some native English speakers, (or native American speakers if you prefer it) so "chat in English" isn't far off bull's eye.
>>7 I'm "diplomat's spoiled son". There was another guy a while back who also was, but haven't seen him around for a long time.
Now it's time to go to work, as usual. Got a staff review today. My employers are religious fanatics who truly believe this planet is 6000 years old. The review will be conducted by some middle-aged guy who usually works from home, and smells like moldy bread.
>>13 The Americans are all criminals and scum mostly. Look at the crime rate in America, there is more crime in America than in any other part of the world. All you have to do to buy a gun is walk into a shop. Anyone can buy a gun. It's dreadful! Outrageous!
British guys mesmerise Asian girls all over the world because they are gentle, sexy and manly. Asian girls are dying to date British guys from the bottom of their heart, and I'm proud of it. :)
>>24 I'm sure he/she's just joking so be easy on him.
>There are probably more native speakers here than you think. Is that because you see many posts here writtten by a native English speaker? I for one can't distinguish which posts are that of a native English speaker's. It's easy to tell if a post includes obvious grammatical erros but I can't tell if a post is that of Japanese who's fluent in English and includes few erros.
I think posting with a fixed handle name is sometimes hard because a poster with HN have to be nice and polite and it's hard for them to ignore a question to them. If you're anonymous, you can just ignore it. Although as an English learner, I think it would be helpful to tell which post is English speakers'.
Maybe some posters who used to use HN went back to anonymous and still come here.
>>20 Oh.... You are a spoiled son, you! I did not know it. Hmm, fanatics who believe this planet is 6000 years old? I know nothing about religion, so I have no idea who... or maybe it is an English phrase?
>>40 The only people who believe Earth is 6000 years old are crazy christians. They're a funny lot. That's the least crazy of what they preach and believe.
If my memory serves me correctly, イギリス人 said he would have a sex change surgery and get married a couple months ago, so technically he is "she" now and possibly soon to be an internet addicted housewise. I assume this type of custom is not uncommon in the UK, right?
>>39 I think you write very well. At least better than I do. So don't get me wrong. BTW this is my first time writing in here in English. I doubt that writing in here will help me improve my English. Seems like a waste of time.
>>41 Ah... Them christians! It is a good thing we don't that nonsense here in Japan. I have heard that some of their extreme lot teach Creationism as science in school. But, there are people who are fed up with religious hate here, so I should grow up and shut up now.
>>43 No offense taken. I just wrote what I think about my English. Waste of time? Come ooon. Browsing 2ch in any thread is more or less a waste of time. Here, at least you can practice writing English so I'd say it's worth posting here. You can read natural English by native English speakers, too. So keep staying here and let's have a fun.
>>23 So, can we be a English man if we say "bloody"? Are there any other bloody words that can turn some bloody pathetic Japanese man into a bloody awesome English man?
To avoid confusion with カナダ人 I'll use a カナダ都市 for a name
>>2 I've been making use of smart.fm lists for that whole "memorize, memorize, memorize" bit I tried Heisig's book, which enlightened me to the way of radicals at least, though I didn't find his memorization methods particularly useful.
>>49 You used the handle name before him. I think I remember there was another Canadian before him.
Japanese kids learn kanji by repetion of writing, writing and writing. It's better than just looking at PC screen on smart.fm formerly known as iknow IMO. Do the learning software teach you storke order?
>>50 It does show the stroke order, though just looking at it on the screen is no good IMO. Additionally, if you know the stroke order rules then it's not hard (for me at least) to simply guess the correct stroke order more often than not. Writing the kanji however certainly helps for memorization, especially if you are the type of person who learns by motor-association. For example, when writing an A I don't think of how to write an A, my hand just does all the work. Obviously with the magnitude of kanji it would be hard to get that kind of muscle-memory, but it's easier to remember that I need to write 言 and 舌 to make 話 than to remember the whole thing.
>>56 You could say I came by way of 4chan, though I knew of this places existence before I had ever been there since I had read a news article on this place some time (AFAIK) before 4chan had ever been created. We did have at one time the largest mall in the world, though currently I believe it is the 2nd largest after the one in Dubai, or possibly even 3rd.
>>57 I had always assumed they were well known amongst kanji users, nearly every English guide to kanji I've seen makes mention of them. Perhaps they all mention it to make studying easier, or simply because it was mentioned when the writer of the guide learned themselves. It makes sense though that you would not need to know the hard rules since you would naturally use them when learning the kanji. It's a bit like native English speakers not being able to define the finer grammatical points of the language despite being able to use them correctly.
>>58 That is a very extravagant device for what all it does... Something like that would be nice since it would probably encourage actually writing the kanji instead of software. With software one is more apt to be lazy and 'imagine writing the kanji' instead of actually picking up a pen and paper to do it.
Korean guys are amazingly popular all over the world now that the girls all over the world say they are fascinated with Korean guys, who are hot, sexy, smart, and manly. I think the reason Korean guys are popular now is because so many girls were interested in Korean Wave stuff that the rest couldn't ignore its existence and once they knew they got suddenly mesmerised with Korean guys. That's one reasonable explanation we can think of. Another is that Korean high-tech products have become known as the best in the world. You know, Korean products are really competitive. The news says that Korean companies such as Samusung, Hyundai and LG, have the dominant power over the world market. I guess that let girls all over the world intersted in Korean guys as well. They wanted to know what kind of people creat these cool gudgets. And sure enough, those who creat such cool gudgets are really cool. The girls somehow got to know that. As a result, the 2 reasons are enough to lead the girls's to think they want to marry a Korean guy one day. I'm really proud of it. :)
>>61 Is that right? They made the largest mall with oil money then.
I can't beleive they way you foreigners manage to get to this thread with plural clicks. First you have to choose English board among many other boards in 2ch. Even I was overwhelmed with the page where lots of borad names are written. After sucessfuly choosing English board, you reach the page where lots of thread names are listed. You don't even know if there's a thread title written in English and thread where posts are written in English at the time. Then you finally click this thread's title and you are here. To think you guys aren't so fluent in Japanese, it's miracle you finally get here. It's like you find a new star in space.
The general rule of thumb for Kanji stroke orders is, from top to bottom, and from left to right. That's all you need to know about them. There's no written rules everyone has to follow as far as I know. Or maybe there are, I'm not really sure, but even if there are and you didn't stick to them, no one would spot you writing in the wrong order and shout, "you're wrong!" At least after you get out of elementary school.
>>72 I'm from England, and I lived in Japan for 5 years as a boy. One of my areas of study has been Japanese, among other languages. I'm not very good at all though.
>>74 That makes sense. Did you go to International school or local public school? If you think it's too a personal question, just ignore it. London university is famous for Japanese studys. Maybe you go to the uni.
Today is a strange day. Two foreigners throw away their anonymity.
>>78 Right now I'm attending Oxford uni. I don't think it's giving up anonymity as I, my name, etc., are all still unknown, and the information I gave is hardly enough to identify me.
>>83 Ayuki in email addy and YUKI in your trip code... Are they from Anime character or something? I'm not anime person so I have no clues.
Usually, trip code is decided mechanicall by its system, but yours are Yuki, which is like a girl's name. Some 2chanellers know how to make their desired trip code. It's amazing you know the trick.
>>86>>87 I'll give my opinion if you like. There are many different accents, people have different accents in every region (Yorkshire, Manchester, in London itself there are different accents). The English of England was the first version of English spoken, and English originated in England.
>>70 oh, for a westerner, finding this board is easier than you seem to think. When "ENGLISH" is basically the one singular word you can effortlessly read among all those crazy moon runes in 2ch's menu, it really catches your attention. And once I saw this board, I was sort of expecting threads like this one to exist, so I just scanned the thread list for Latin letters.
>>84 Now I understand the flow. I had skipped clicking the link so that's why I was cluless.
"Ah fuck, I can't believe you've done this." Is this a gentleman-like response? Does it take the understanding of the nuance of "I can't believe you've done this" part? The reason why this video is supposed to be funny is the puched man's wording? This video isn't staged is it?
>>90 Hmmm. That makes sense, but You could have expected that 2ch's menu is full of "those crazy moon runes" but you were still curious about having a glance at 2ch? You never expected there's English board in 2ch, did you. When you find the word "ENGLISH" on the menu, you went like, "WOW! I got to try this board"?
>>92 It's a polite response as he doesn't get angry or flinch, he says it almost deprecatingly, he says it without much interest, instead of hitting him back or something.
>>93 Thank you for the explanation. I think I understand more why this video is funny.
Still, I don't think I undetstand fully why this video has gotten so much attentions so many comments, so many response videos and people are all poking fun at him. Seems like I can't feel something you westerners can see and feel.
His popularity was a mere chance accident, I saw this video nearly a year ago when it first came out and it was not very popular. Over time people have just shown it to more and more people, and his phrase (Ah fuck, I can't believe you've done this) has become more popular then the actual video.
Yes you're right, it is a girl's name. Specifically this girl: http://i41.tinypic.com/jhvkmu.jpg my e-mail if you separate it into English words says a/yuki/for/you However please don't think I wish to act as her, (roleplay, in English) I just like her character very much.
Also, I'm good with computers so yes I can get the desired tripcode.
>>95 Oh, thanks for explaining the context. It sounds like a snowball effect. Internet is a powerful tool for word of mouth thing.
>>96 Some comments there say they watch the video again and again and every time they watch it, it made them laugh. Some people seems not to stop laughing at him.
If you upload your British English, I hope you'll keep it available for hours so that I won't miss it, if you don't mind. I don't blame you if you delete it right away, though.
>>95 Hi. I'm a passerby who just stumbled on this thread and found a cute pic of mai waifu. Thanks. I saved it at the speed of light. If you're a person like me, you might be interested in this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeeLkYJLUbQ
But be warned: The cute V-sign at the end of the vid may take you to the dark side. There's no way out of here. I can tell from my own experience.
>>95 >Also, I'm good with computers so yes I can get the desired tripcode. So, did you figure out the algorithm on your own? Or did you use a tool made by someone else?
Nevermind, I tried recording myself. My impression while trying to record is just awful. Listening to your own voice when your not talking is quite a bit different from listening to yourself while your talking.
It's strange though, I've convinced a lot of people that I am from England.
>>102 Last time I was in the US, I was repeatedly asked questions such as "Do you have McDonald's in England?" and "Do you have... THE INTERNET... in England?".
I did not write the algorithm but a tool was not available for Mac OS X so I had to use the algorithm and write my own code that implemented it. I found the algorithm using a lot of research and a bit of source code.
To write the actual program I used Perl, but this was a year ago. I'm learning more and I might want to try a similar thing in C/C++. Perl is getting out dated for many things.
I should mention that I work as a website/server programmer part-time so this helps me, but otherwise I'm a student going to school for computer science.
>>108 I think this question comes from the lack of my understanding of your post, but..
Are you asking if Japanese people have sort of like two personalities, one for real life and the other for real life? For example, when Japanese people are anonymous on the Internet, they tend to get abusive, but they tend to be nice and polite in real life, ?
Or are you asking whether Japanese language used for writing on the Internet and Japanese writing (and speaking) style in real life are slightly different from sort of linguistic point of view?
>>108 Yes, I do. I mean most of the time, except when people have a serious disscusion (I'd be more polite and so I tend to use more kanji and idioms than I usually do). And I don't use 2ch jargons. There are many people using them in 2ch, though.
Did you watch her sing? I watched her singing on TV first. It's viewed by many on youtube. She sure sings well but I don't like the way she was featured. They introduced her as if she had come out of nowhere but to think she sings so well, at least she must have been the talk of town/village.
Susan Boyle said on the stage she has never kissed before. She's so honest but did she have to mention the fact in public? I watched several CNN videos and some of the anchor touched on the fact. Now tens of millions of people know she's vergin.
If I were her, I'd be so ashamed of not having kissed in life and of letting everybody know the fact. I would even bend the fact, saying I have had go out with a few girlfriends. How would you answer if you never kissed before. Would you let the fact open to public or tell a lie?
>>104 Um, it might be darker than you expect. Traps, transsexual, etc. Well, I realized the bassist is a he when I had a nice fapping session. So...
>>108 Are you reffering to speach levels and langauge registers? If so, it depends on the board and thread you're reading. 90% of written texts on 2ch/blog/whatnot on the internet are pretty much the same as what you hear on the street. Unless you're visiting VIP or other extreme boards, most likely people are speaking the same way as they do in a usual informal conversation. It's like a normal speech with a grain of internet slang thrown in for good measure. But I think using 2ch slang IRL is like spouting 4chan memes right in front of your grandma. It's that awkward.
So the answer is yes and no as always.
If you want to know more about the difference between written and speaking Japanese, it's a little complicated. Traditionally the Japanese language has distinct grammar and vocabulary for written language, but they're gradually disappearing and I think it's kind of obsolete to write that way. You may still come across them in formal documents such as Government statements. But I doubt fuckers in this thread could write anything in formal written language.
>>122 So you really just passed by. Several threads back, there was a grad student who's researching computer science or something. His English was good enough for native English speakers to mistaken his mother tongue is English.
He frequents 4chan and often used cuss words like you did in >>120. So I thought you're him. I think your English is very natural while mine is with awkward words and expressions here and there.
>>123 Thanks for introducing your old friend to me. If he speaks English better than your average Japanese and kind of a nerd, chances are he knows 4chan too. And if he's a hardcore anonymous, it's not surprising he uses foul language. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if he was a profanity professional.
yes 4chan memes are terrible and should never be said, but a lot of them are used so much now that I think the average poster just uses them without even thinking.
>>129 I'm not good at reading between the lines in Englishso let me ask you something. In >>102, you implyed you won't try record and upload your English with British accent anymore? That happens when you hear your own recorded voice. That's not just you.
>>121 Are you talking as an English native speaker? Isn't his repetitive use of "and whatnot" peculiar? I've thought person who use "whatnot" often is the one and Japanese. Is "whatnot" the matter of personal preference? Did I just mistakenly link his distinctive speech pattern with his being Japanese?
Only native speaker could judge who is native speaker level or not. >>123 admits he is not better than >>113, still evaluates >>113's English. It's an contradiction.
I don't mean to pick up a fight or anything. I am just impressed.
As for my self, I guess I will not be native speaker level while I am alive.
>>132 Just searched "whatnot" in the previous thread and found no results in the 999 posts. I think if >>113 actually has native or near-native fluency, he'd have said ".../whatever" instead. Anyway, it sure doesn't seem "whatnot" is an oft-used word among the Japanese. Maybe native speakers in this thread can recognize some of us by our writing styles.
>>132 I'm Japanese. I don't think he overused "whatnot" at all. I don't understand what you're talking about.
"and whatnot" "and all" "and such" can be used interchagably, if I'm not wrong. Use whichever you want. And I don't think using "whatnot" is piculiar to Japanese.
>>135 Nope. I'm Japanese. And I often mix up present tense and past-tense (or hypothetical tense??) when I say "If X were/did Y, then Z would be/do..."
I just happen to have thread 119 and there was too hits of "whatnot".
As long as I recognize, "what not" man likes japanese anime in English-dubbed or subbed version. Yes, he might love to visit English boards like 4chan? too. I know "whatnot" is native speaker like usage and we japanese don't use it often. I assumed he learned "whatnot" from native English and come to use it frequently.
My theory is just an hyphothesis and a couple of Japanese might have used what not. What not man in thread 119 says he was a math major and had phd in computer science.
>>146 Have you ever talked with native English speakers? Have you ever watched TV or movie in English? Have you ever read English blog posts or forums?
>>146 If you google "and whatnot" (with quotes), you'll find more than 2 million hits. And "frequent words" will give you only 110,000 hits. I can't believe you've never heard it.
>>136 I know. Rather whatnot is not familiar to Japanese English learners. So what not man stood out. I have been covering this threads 80% or more for the past two years or so. I didn't notice whatnot before "he" came here. Whatnot drew attentions recently, half a year or so.
I just thoght (over)using native speaker like usages were another symptom of japanese (advanced) English users.
>>149 I noticed when someone says a useful but not-Japanese-school-English word or phrase multiple times, others pick it up and start using it. It's like advanced students "imports" natural expressions to this thread.
>>147 I have talked with native English speakers over tens of thousands of times. I have watched TV or movies in English over hundreds of hundreds of times. I have read English blog posts or forums under two hundred times.
lmfao you guys are hilarious sometimes, why does it matter if he said "whatnot"? I don't think one word is an indication of a native speaker, I'm a native speaker and I could mix up my words to make it sound like I wasn't, or even though I'm a Canadian I could type with styles that are distinctly British. The point here is that the language is too broad to pin down one word and say "this one is an indication you are native"
I'm not sure if I'm explaining it correctly, but I have an example - in Canada "native" refers to Native Americans (Indians, guys who throw spears, etc.) so this word is almost never used beyond a classroom. It's interesting to see such use here. That being said, it isn't wrong. You guys are using it correctly - we just never use it in Canada =P
When I want to meet my missing brother, which would be correct? Search for missing brother or Search missing brother. Is only first one correct? What would second sentence mean?
"Whatnot" is just an informal phrase that native English speakers utter quite often. What's the big deal? Personally, I tend to avoid using it so I won't make a habit of mixing it into my formal writings. Also, spotting someone on an anonymous board is pretty meaningless, unless some jerk or moron is trying to wreck the thread. Just go with it.
>>154 >It's not darker then I realize, I'm already down this path probably a bit further then you might expect.
lol I think I love you.
As for nativeness, it's really funny to see posters in here say something like that. I bet I'll be labeled as "more native" if I say "for what it's worth" and abbreviate it to FWIW.
Canadian, Do you often hear [ English speaking Japanese say native [ when they really means native speakers] ]? And [ if you do ], how do you feel [ to hear it ]?
>>153 I doubt that. You say you've had tons of conversations, watched lots of movies, read massive amount of English texts, and still come out sounding like babelfish? No one can possibly be that slow.
>>161 He lacks standard English ability and he soon forgets what he has done. That's why.
Babe fish? new word to me. I can imagine though. And babe fish is an English teacher, best English teacher by his own words. He says he discovered new English sentence pattern on his own. He is sure that he will be offered a positon of lecturer on NHK English program.
>>155 The second one would mean he was strip-searched or something.
The police spent the whole day searching for the missing child, not because his parents asked but because they thought he stole the key. Finally they got him and searched him for the key.
As for the whatnot guy, he talks just like a native speaker. He could easily pass as one on an English speaking board. He misspelled a couple of words, but just about everyone misspells words from time to time so it isn't a big deal. "Whatnot" is a slang word. It pretty much means the same thing as "et cetera".
I don't think I can discriminate posters by how skilled they are at speaking English; but I just know there are some people here who speak it damn near perfectly, there are some who make a lot of mistakes (but I pretty much get what they're saying), and there are some who are barely intelligible. This thread is probably for advanced English speakers so I usually see more of the first. Keep it up.
Yeah, some of you have a way better command of English than me. The guy who puts mysterious brackets in his posts is quite unintelligible, or maybe my brain just refuse to understand him. But most of others speak English really well.
From your standpoint as a learner of Japanese language, what word do you use to describe us whose mother tongue is Japanese?
Don't you refer to us as a "native Japanese speaker"? OR You just meant the word "native" alone don't usually mean "native Japanes speaker"? (from your standpoint of a learner of Japanese)
Loooooong time ago, even before Tennessean came to this thread, we talked about if you foreigners take off your shoes at home. We Japanese people, at least me, thought you wear shoes at home. Because that's one of the typical things we learn about differences in your culture and ours.
But to my surprise, quite many American said they don't wear shoes at home. What about you? Is it common in America/Canada/Germany/UK or whatever country (except Japan) you live to take off your shoes and change to slippers or anything for hygene purpose?
>>174 AFAIK, it seems more frequent than "FWIW," but either of them is pretty rampant, if you ask me. IMHO, it's just another abbreviation. At the end of the day, if it's shortened, that means people are abusing it. It's not that difficult to figure it out, isn't it? It's not rocket science. Just observe the way others speak and absorb it. You'll intuitively know what expressions are more common.
Just my 2 cents.
Took five minutes for me aka a retarded anon to write this crap, lol.
To be quite honest, we would just say "A Japanese person" if they came from/speak Japanese we would just call them "Japanese". We refer to people by nationality I guess, but we don't say "native" a German speaking person is just "German" not "A native of Germany". I'm not sure if this is confusing for you, but we never get confused by it.
I have heard this rumor before lol. I can only speak for Canada, but 99% of people do not wear shoes in the home. I would not allow this in my house, I think it's disgusting. You would get dirt everywhere! Even if I come into someones house and they say I can leave my shoes on I do not want to do this, it feels more natural walking inside in my socks. Except of course in schools and such, in those places it is okay to wear shoes.
I have a question for Japanese people though, is it a serious offense to refer to someone without -さん? Unless you know them well of course. Take this example, you walk down the hall and you see a girl you know. If you call her name without -さん is this serious? Can you apologize quickly for it?
>>111 I saw this a couple weeks ago, on television. She seems pretty eccentric and forthright, and it was sort of unexpected that she would do quite well, judging by her appearance. I wouldn't say she was West-End quality though. She's from a small village, but just outside a major Scottish city... and she's pretty much all we've been hearing about for the last two weeks.
>>151 We play this song at work sometimes. Changed a colleague's Windows startup sound to "Oooh, you touch my tra la la", the error sound to "My ding ding dong", and the shut down sound to "Tutti frutti summer love".
>>175 Most of us don't wear shoes inside, here. It wears the shoes and carpet out, brings in dirt, and doesn't let the feet breathe. We generally either wear slippers or just socks. Bare feet when it's warm enough.
>>177 >Both are uncommon >I mean I have never seen it.
Don't you text or surf internet forums? I think they're as common as "eh?", which I immediately associate with Canadians.
And you never call a Japanese without -san unless s/he is your friend. Ever. If they're your friends, still you shouldn't when they're older than you. It's as rude as calling someone an asshole.
And yes I do text and surf internet forums, but I never thought it was a common abbreviation. More common is IMO, IMHO, omg, lol, lmao, those sorts of things. Also, I do not think it is as common as "eh"
you guys don't realize but saying "eh" is exactly like "ね" for us.
>>175 I don't know anyone who wears his shoes at home. Everyone takes them off at the front door. The only exception is this one family I'm acquainted with that lives in a three-story house, which has a corridor leading from the front door to a garden in the back. They leave their shoes on in that corridor, but would never walk upstairs to the living rooms while still wearing them.
But I've heard somewhere that in Japan, students are required to take off the shoes they wear on the street in exchange for a less dirty pair when they enter the school building. (is that true, by the way?) We don't do that here, at least not in public schools. Although, in elementary school and kindergarten, the classroom will often have a carpet and everything. When that's the case, the kids have to wear socks or slippers.
In the last image, you see each space for one's shoes has a door. You oepn and close when you take out and take in your shoes. If someone is your secret admirer, she/he might put a letter. I've never experienced it though.
No, this is not true. Probably, he doesn't really know what "asshole" sounds like. It is rude but not that offensive. Still, it'd be better to address people with さん just to be on the safe side, though.
>>188 Hmm, have you ever called an asshole in real life? Do you really know the tension the word carries? Do you really think it's equivalent to calling someone without さん?You know it's a stretch to say that. Besides, I agreed it's rude and only suggested addressing "people" with さん to be on the safe side anyway.
I think the problem is a little different when it comes to "native English speakers."
The Japanese speak Japanese, and native Japanese speakers who are not Japanese are virtually nonexistent. The same goes for German, Finnish, and so forth. But Americans speak English. Canadians speak English. Britons speak English. Australians, South Africans, etc all do so. Yay! Can I call you English, Canadian guys? Or should I say you speak Canadian? May I have to call your friends from Quebec French?
Usually as we see American movies ,we don't see people take off their shoes as they get in the houses. Why? Is this because the houses in the movies aren't actually someone's? Can Americans answer me?
When I was living in US, some of Americans didn't even ask if they should take off their shoos when they came in my room. They just came in. And when I enter my friend's room with my shoos on, I felt really awkward. I could never get used to it...
If you wear shoes all day long, you are likely to get moss on your feet, the kind of moss which Japanese call mizumushi and native English speakers call athlete's feet. And this may be the first concern as it come to the view of taking off one's shoes. What do you think, anyone?
Have you read this story? There seems to be a few versions of it with slight changes done. Would you tell me what you know about this? Is this a real story? I have to admit tears were swelled in my eye while reading.
A lot of Japanese describe themselves as "native Japanese" on forums like Yahoo! when explaining about Japanese language or culture, as if to authorize themselves. I myself have never described myself as ‘native Japanese.’ I assume by ‘native’ they mean their first language is Japanese. But does it really make sense, and does it really mean what they want it to mean?
Sorry for causing a bit of a stir with the -さん thing, I would always use it to show respect but I was curious if the case was more if you forgot (tired in the morning, etc.) but I suppose this sort of thing is not forgotten easily.
Because that's one of the typical things we learn about differences in your culture and ours.
The same works for japanese tradition. We learn taking off shoes at the hallway? is typical japanese tradition. One australian got pissed off over that preconception of uniquness by Japanese.
Many Japanese call native English speakers natives. When you hear this, don't you native speakes feel that you are being called the kind of people who originally inhabited the area, like American Indians or Aboriginis?
>>209 No. We don't forget -さん even when we get exhausted. Let's say, you are Japanese, didn't have enough sleep last night, and met your boss in the morning. You're really sleepy and say, "Good morning, Takanka." without -さん. Yes. You'll be in serious trouble. Or maybe not, because he may not be able to believe what just happened.
You may get away with it because everyone knows you've grown up in a foreign country. But I never recommend to use honorifics just to be on the safe side, at least in this country.
Something seems to be dintinctively different. We wear shoes even in schools. We change into slippers or indoor shoes (both are designated by school) after the entrance.
It's common way of abusing to hide other's slippers from the shoe locker. lol
I think native strictly means original inhabitants. In broader sense I guess native (English) speakers include everyone who was brought up in English speaking countries and can use English as first language. So when it comes to native Japanese speakers, I guess they include people with foreign citizenships who were brought up in Japan and whose first language is Japanese.
How do you think? Am I wrong?
I guess kazuo ishiguro was a native (English speaker) before getting naturalized in Britain.
I could only watch the first minute of this video, this guy seems very arrogant. Fox news is known for radical views though, and a lot of people don't take them as a serious news station. This man is ignoring the fact that Canada doesn't have to help the U.S with their wars at all, we just do because we're nice.
This is an interesting question for me, because I live in Canada but my town is about 20 minutes in a car from the U.S border. Also, another issue is that "natives" here are Native Americans, or Aboriginals. So even saying something like "native Canadian" would sound strange to many Canadians. I am a native Canadian, but obviously not by choice. I've never been very nationalistic and I don't understand that type of thinking.
If I need to explain anything more please tell me, you guys have great English but I like to make sure everyone is understanding.
I have a good bit of Native American blood in me so I have dark hair, eyes, and skin. I think I already said this before, but a lot of people think I'm Asian or something because of that. I don't have the slanty eyes, though.
>>223 Wut? You said you look somewhat scary before. Asians ain't no scary, we are cute! You are so disrespectful! I'm not gonna forgive you for this one!
>>229 Lucky on the first try. Sup yall? I didn't have a chance to welcome our new Canadian before, so welcome! I'm committed to USC now, just sent in my deposit. I've already made some contacts through facebook so it looks like I'll have a good time. This is a picture I took when I visited the campus: http://photos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs010.snc1/2883_1102823448251_1156650405_30545579_640449_n.jpg Really beautiful there, I can't wait to get out of this shitty Chicago weather.
>>230 Hey. You managed to come back. Did you found a new way of accessing to here? New proxy? American university's campus is really huge. One complain is Zack isn't in the photo. Don't say he's riding the bike. Are you gonna live in a dorm? You got to be careful. Don't let your dorm friends notice your fetish.
Hyundai cars are selling big in America. Samsung smartphones are horribly popular in America. LG flat TVs set the sales record in America. And all those high-tech products are made in Korea. American people appreciate now how nice Korean products are. They can't live a single day without them. American girls didn't stop there. They started searching for information relating to Korean guys. After that, they finally noticed how sexy, hot, and manly Korean guys were in addition to the fact Korean guys were so smart that they created many stuffs American girls themselves can't do without. I'm so proud of it. :)
I really like Koreans. They are so beautiful and intelligent. There was a scientific study that showed that the average Korean IQ is 4 points above that of Japan, and they have the best technology and internet in the world.
>>238 That's exactly right. Korea is thought to be one of the best IT countries. I think that appeals to many girls. Korean guys are beautiful? Oh, that's how you discribe Korean guys. :) Ok. I thought it was a bit weard to say guys are beautiful, but now you say it, yeah, Korean guys are beautiful!! Thank you!!! That must be another reason why Korean guys are popular among girls all over the world. That explains a lot! :)
>>238 >the average Korean IQ is 4 points above that of Japan Come to think of it, it's quite natural Korean guys are smarter than Japanese. According to the results of the exams conducted worldwidely, Korea is top ranked. Those tests explicitely shows how very smart Korean guys are. I think girls like well-educated guys. This is also a reason why girls all over the world love Koren guys. :)
Then of course there are also the brilliant Vietnamese. They are so advanced it is unbelievable. The Vietnamese beat the Japanese in WWII, everyone knows that. It is recorded in the book, "A Brief History of the Edo Period in Feudal Japan - Takahashi Sato." No wonder every Japanese girl wants to marry a Vietnamese.
As an American girl, I love Korean guys from the bottom of my heart. Yeah, Korean high tech products are selling quite well in America. And it's true almost all American girls are mesmerised with Korean guys. I didn't know where they were, but now that we can use the Internet, we can easily watch Korean guys. I'm really happy to watch them. :)
I seriously can't get over how good the k-on ending theme is. The song's guitar chord rhythm and order sounds like a Rammstein song at moments and so do a lot of the other ambient sounds in the chorus. I haven't seen the show at all, but I've watched this video about 50 times now.
Canadian guys are more popular than Korean guys in reality, as they are far sexier, smarter and manlier, and as sweet as maple syrup. Compared to Canadian guys, Korean guys are just like side dishes on the table that no one really cares for. All types of girls are getting attracted to Canadian girls around the world. Korean guys have to face it. :)
>>249 Bad news to you, but my Canadian female friends all say they prefer Korean guys. Probably many, many, many Canadian girls are also interested in K boys like American girls are. Sorry about that, Canadian guys. Korean guys don't think of stealing Canadian girls so please relax. It's just that Canadian girls love Korean guys, but their hope won't be answered. Sorry about that, Canadian girls. Please don't be jealous of American girls for stealing Korean guys hearts.
Japanese guys have to face the reality. The fact of the matter is that the newest fashion for Japanese girls are fat lazy Americans. They have much more money and live in greater luxury than is possible in Japan. As a Japanese girl I just have to say that I love fat Americans. I can't wait to marry a fat American. :)
As this thread shows it clearly, Canadian guys enjoy their popularity most just like they do in the world. However, Korean guys get almost no replies in this thread, just as they don't around the world. Korean guys don't have to feel sorry for themselves, but please check reality and give proper respect to Canadians. :)
I'm in my fourth year of kyutei university. In Japan job hunting is too hard and students who faild job hunting cannot get a job forever. When I was in high school, I studied very hard and passed the one of the most difficult entrance examination. But now all I did is in vain. I want to die.
Japanese guys always attract the entire female population of Canada, since they've become a lengend as a sex symbol there. However, a lot of Canadian guys are so jealous of J-guys that they turn around and start condemning Canadian girls for choosing J-guys over them. Canadian guys need to take a close look at themselves in the mirror, and wake up and see the truth of who the pathetic ones really are. :)
I remember how in school we used to have an "80s Day" where people would dress up in clothes from the 80s. I remember that a lot of girls dressed up similar to how they do in that k-on video.
Japanese learners, do you pronounce ha hi fu he ho as ha hi fu he ho? I think ha hi hu he ho is actually ha hyi hwu he ho whe Japanese people pronounce them. What do you think?
>>267 l2IPA, retard. Also, google "allophone" and you'll be enlightened.
That said, I'm a super kind guy so I teach you a little more. There're actually three types of consonant in the Japanese h-series (ha, hi, fu, he, ho), and none of them is identical to the "h" or "f" sound of General American.
Hey, what does Clockworked Orange has to do with Chocolate Factory? Can you tell me what they have in common? Was Chocolate directed by Stanrey Rubic cube?
Forgot to mention that I'm no expert. I'm >>276 and Japanese. Maybe the nice Canadian guy or other gentlemen from English speaking countries are kind enough to let us know what the average native English speakers would say.
I failed to see the otaku infection you say. Actually I found only a few posts that could be otaku-ish in this thread. If you're referring to カナダ人, he could be a "weeaboo." But so what?
John McCain is a pathetic retard who can never speak English without some grammatical errors. I can understand you.
Incorrect: Those of us who are over fifty years old should get their blood pressure checked regularly. Correct: Those of us who are over fifty years old should get our blood pressure checked regularly. 〔Pass key to the TOEFL, Pamela J. Sharpe, P187〕
Pamela J. Sharpe(Ph.D.), a writer, and Barron's Educational Series, INC, a publisher, are sordid swindlers who sell an inaccurate book without any scruples. I can understand you.
>>285 Doesn't it depend on whether the speaker is over 50? It's a little unusual to take it this way, but the speaker could be young and talking to older members of the same group.
By the way, his idiosyncratic usages of brackets and asterisks make it quite confusing. It's really hard to understand what he's asking...
Obviously he thought >>273 was asking where to put accents because he used * and []. I think it's natural to assume * is for vocal emphasis if there's no explanation at all.
"His" in "his posting" means >>274. The only part I read of his posting was "(1) for sure". So I assumed that he was wrong, an assumption I found wrong only after your pointing out.
I should have read his posting with more care.
As for "*" 片岡 frequently uses, I have no idea what he means by the symbol.
>>289 Yes, exactly. "our" would only be valid if the speaker is over 50 himself, but you could always say "their". And "those of us" doesn't necessarily imply that the speaker is part of the sub-group he declares through that expression. So "our" would be incorrect in SOME circumstances, but without further context it's not possible to discern if it is in that particular sentence. Am I getting this right, this is a question taken from a text book? Because, then It's an unanswerable trick question.
>>297 AHHHHHHH, my brain's gonna explode! I don't care grammar at all. I just say our when I think I'm included and their when I'm not. If linguists say otherwise, I don't give a shit. It's not like I consciously choose words when I speak.
I would use (2) actually. When you say "those of us" you mean you and a group, so it follows you should say "our" not "their" you would say "their" if you were talking about a group that did not include you. Such as this sentence:
"Those who are awesome should get their awesome checked regularly" (stupid sentence lol)
You would not say "those of us" if you were not part of the group. That doesn't make sense.
I'm sure you don't know, but weeaboo is sort of an offensive term for an anime fan. =P "Weeaboo" are generally people who are ignorant about everything Japanese except anime, but they pretend to be geniuses. I like anime, but I like a lot of things. Weeaboos only like anime and this is what they live for. What is more pathetic they think the Japanese voice acting sucks so they only watch English, reading subtitles is too hard I guess.
>>304 I thought weeaboos were people who are so obsessed with Japan that hey think anything Japan does is awesome and superior, and try so hard to become Japanese (like using Japanese words while speaking English) I think there are weeaboos who don't watch that much anime, but are obsessed with other things such as J music and dramas.
(1) Those of us [ who are over fifty years old ] should get [ *their blood pressure checked regularly ].
When the situation is that people of 40s and 50s have gathered at a place including me, and I tell toward all the people there about taking blood pressure test, wouldn't it be kind to say their blood pressure because the point is not whether I'm included in the ones to take the test?
Those of you who are over fifty years old should get your blood pressure checked regularly.
Those of us who are over fifty years old should get our blood pressure checked regularly.
When you use 'us', you are grouping people with yourself and making the pronoun possessive, therefore you use 'our'. When you use "you", it's objective and the pronoun changes accordingly. If you're not included, you just wouldn't say "us". You could say "those of you" if you don't want to imply you're included, even if you are.
>>311 Somehow "those of you who are over 50 should..." sounds to me a little unkind as if the speaker is looking down on people who are over age 50. It's difficult to explain, but it's like the speaker is saying, "You old guys should do this and I don't need to because I'm not old." Do native English speakers feel the same?
It's sort of complex, yes a lot of weeaboos do use Japanese words with English. I do it too sometimes but I think for me it's okay because I intend to learn the language, they are just trying to be cool. The most common words they use are: バカ、かわいい、すごい。 They don't know anything else =P
It depends on who is saying it, if a doctor is talking to an audience it is not impolite to say "Those of you who are over 50 should..."
But either way this issue could go on forever, it's not a big deal in English and in the end it's the context that matters. I'm sure it's the same way in Japanese.
Big NEWS SMAP member Tsuyoshi, Kusanagai was arrested over Obscenity charge.
This is the one of the biggest scandal in Japan's show budsiness history. It's like one of the members of Backstreet boys, West Life, or those equivelants in your countries popular boys' croup member would be arrested.
You don't know inagaki "member". Inagaki is another SMAP member. WHen Inagaki was arrested, media reported inagaki "member" was arrested. Usually when suspect was arrested, media say inagaki 容疑者(suspect) was arrested. To avoid inagaki 容疑者 (suspect inagaki), which makes inagaki bad man, media add "member" after inagaki. You can see how japanese media is biased and pay attentions to influential talent agency.
Lol that is all the police did? In America, he would have been elbowed in the face, had his nose broken, and the police would have gotten away with blatant abuse.
>>325 That sounds like the police overuse their power.
He was told to put on clothes. If he had followed cop's instruction and stop shouting at night, chances have been he wasn't arrested. The point is he didn't follow cop's instruction. Breaking his nose woul have been too much.
The park he arrested in was in very urban area and is said to be a place where gay people meet.
I don't think he is gay but the fact he was naked and shouting at night reminds me George Michael, in terms of impact of the scandal. George was arrested when masterbating in a toilet in a park. I'm not sure though.
Kusanagi will be discharged from chidegi character. I'm glad. chidegi character is public character to inform the public of the transition from terrestrial analog broadcast to terrestrial degital broadcast.
As of now print media calls kusanagi suspect kusanagi. I don't know the case of TV news.
>>333 At one time, I thought he is because he looks like Korean and he speaks pretty good Korean. But the kanji なぎ of his name is only used by Japanese. So he is Japanese. That's what read somewhere.
Oh! This is off-topic but I wasn't sure if I should take a picture of a Canadian restaurant (where I went for dinner). I don't think anyone really cares, but if someone is curious this is how it looked:
>>341 When I read it in Japanese text, I see it as the equivalent of lol. When I read it in English text, my brain automatically sees it as World Wide Web. I thought it happened to everyone, but it may just be me.
>>337 He was on a japanese TV commercial, nomura or daiwa security firm if my memory serves me correctly. I checked on the net. security firm seems to be wako syouken(security).
Now I know Again He was arrested for the possesion of child porn. Japanese media didn't report it big at that time. He seems to be hard core pervert.
I was with my mother and my sister but both are not in the picture. I'm not sure what the photos are of, they might be the owners friends or family. Or maybe generic pictures he bought from a dollar store.
It was an Italian restaurant (I know I said Canadian...what I meant was it's a restaurant in Canada lol.) so I ate gourmet pizza. It had blue cheese, olives, onion, bacon, and this other meat I'm not sure if you have it called "prosciutto" it's like ham cut a different way. I still have some pizza, maybe I will take a picture later. It doesn't look like delivery.
I have to confess I jerked off during cram school's class when I was a 9th grader. Maybe people sitting behind me noticed that. I may be pervert that's why I'm NEET now. Not sure.
Is it common to take off pants and jerk off together in the porn theatre in the US? I want to know personal experience regardless of your citizenships.
>>358 I used it as an overnight shelter once when I was a teenager. It was like really dark, deserted and what little customer they had were mostly middle age men. And they had this movie like an octopus sucking on a vagina. It was pretty nasty and I don't think jerking in there constitute a crime.
>>360 Mine was small at the time so it didn't stand out. I open front zipper and exposed it and rubbed it. I came but no sermen because I wasn't matured enough. Even now I grew up, my penis is small.
The class was science class and so boring and I didn't know what the teacher is talking about so I thought, "Oh yeah, so boring. why don't I jerking off?" Then I did it.
One time when I was in grade 7 me and a friend were in a theater with no one else there, he had to pee but didn't want to miss the movie so he went to the end of the row and peed there lol. It was funny at the time, but thinking back on it we were fairly stupid.
but he DID get arrested, I think it's sort of stupid, but I guess you can't do that lol. Maybe because it was in 1991, porn theaters might be more relaxed now?
>>366 As I said in 365, no sermen. I grew up at very slow pace and even when I was a 9 grader, no sermen. My voice changed low around graduation of junior high.
in 1971 he was arrested for loitering and prowling near an adult theater, though charges were later dropped. His second arrest was in 1983 when Reubens was placed on two years' probation for possession of marijuana, although adjudication was withheld.
>>377 It could be just he's a hardcore pervert. I don't know. I've never lived in Florida. But I'm sure people from Canada know more about what's the norm there so I was just bringing up what it could be. Merely hypothetical.
>>374 I "touched" my pee pee when I was a little kid, but I never "came". The first time I came, I ejacultaed. Cumming without ejaculating, I've never heard of that.
>>383 OK, this it turning real weird, but this is 2ch. Let's make it weirdly interesting. I did cum before spermarche. The feeling was the same, just nothing came out.
lol sermen Peewee Herman's show was pretty scary as I recall.
I used to have a friend who would just come over to my house for the sole purpose of downloading and watching massive amounts of porn. We were too young to masturbate and I thought it was boring as hell to just watch it so I had to kick him out a couple of time because he wouldn't fucking stop downloading.
Woohoo! Lucky again. It seems Hotspot Shield is better now; I don't have to try 20 times anymore. I'll be going to college August 19th so I'll be able to post more easily next year(assuming 2ch doesn't block CA ISPs)
Here's a joke: What's long and hard and full of semen?
>>394 Argh, I had no clue so googled it. The problem is, in Japanese, semen is called zaamen (that's why some people wrote sermen) so I thought semen was pronounced zeemen in English.
My American girlfriend and her friends all say Korean guys are popular with girls. On the other hand, they say that Japs are thought to be sneaky and creepy because they are ugly and historically uneducated. My gf is angry when she talks about Dokto and WW2, saying Japs should appologize to Korea and never even try to steal Dokto from Korea. Yes, Japs are disliked by girls all over the world. They say they feel sorry for Korea. I didn't know how they feel about it, but as they say Korea is right, I'm quite sure those who should be punished will be punished sooner or later. Japan should be punished for what they did in the past and do now. All the girls around the world also hope that Japs will stop torturing Korea. And their idea is definitely right. Korean guys will love the girls all around the world in return. :)

>>409 lol thanks for the help. I think I'm going to do badly on the exam anyways. I could pass out of level 1 Japanese in college if I were to do well.
Well a lot of other countries do look down on japan for omitting the nanking massacre and stuff in their school curriculum. That's like if germany denied the holocaust. It's just completely unacceptable.
Having said that, it's okay to translate "these people" as 「この人達」 It just depends on the context, and you need to translate "people" differently depending on the context.
>>395 Then what bad influence of porn would exert on them after primary school boys watched oral sex and penetration and as such? Tennessean is a Living proof?
>>431 おk is OK. When you type "ok" in Japanese mode, it is typed "おk."
The original version of it is 日本語でおk You see this phrase often in 2ch. The trasnlation of it would be, "You can post in Japanese." If a post is grammatically wierd and you don't understand what it means, the poster gets a respond, 日本語でおk, sarcastically, implying his post is gibberish and it sounds as if it weren't Japanese. So what the phrase means is "We are all Japanese so you can write in Japanese, then we'll understand what you mean." In a nutshell, it means, "I don't understand what you mean. Because your Japanese is terrible."
This thread is written in English. So >>410 gave 日本語でおk a twist and change it to 英語でおk, implying that someone's post is too bad that he can't understand it. He means "Would you write in decent English so that everybody here can understand what you mean?" Of course he is teasing. I think he's just having fun posting 英語でおk because this thread is written in English and don't direct it to a specific post here.
I hope I sucessfully made myself understood by this post. If not, you'll respond to me, commenting, "英語でおk"
If Cho Seung-hui had known the way to balance his mental unrest by bashing Japan, he would not have attempted indiscriminate shooting at school. If >>405 was Cho Seung-hui, he would have gruge against white girls who turned down him and he would grow hostility against America.
Remember your mission next school year is to bring Zack to this thread.
"Is this true? When I speak with people no one knows."
I don't know if these conversations make sense even in English.
Back to the topic, I think it's a matter of feeling. 人達 is conveying the meaning but sounds weird. We often say like あの人達 that people, この人達 this people. 人達 without demonstrative pronoun or adjective sounds odd. I guess 人々hitobito sounds more natural.
Then using 人 only sounds weird too. "I spoke with 人" make us imagine speaker is unhuman or speker have not spoken with 人 for a long time cos 人 sounds like human-beings as species in this context.
人 with adjective or pronoun is O.K again. For example, silent 人 or gentle 人.
Then how would you translate "When I spoke with people"?
I wouldn't like it if you translated "people" here as "hitobito." I'd like to ask you, would you ever say "hitobito" in daily conversation? "hito ni hanasitara" would work just fine. Don't you think so?
Thanks for the explanation, I get it now and I realize I actually read it correctly =) I just wasn't sure about "おk" I thought it sounded strange, and to me it could of been confused with を (which would not make sense) or an honorific used by a women (お花) but this second case would be strange to see on the internet I guess.
I can sort of see where you might confuse it, but you need to remember it's hard to translate direct Kanji. From my understanding 日本人、can mean "The Japanese people" or it can just mean "A Japanese Person" so here it is a noun and a mass noun. I use the name カナダ人、but this doesn't mean I am all Canadians.
http://eow.alc.co.jp/people/UTF-8/?ref=sa I couldn't find the case that 人 alone is used to describe one or plural people who speakers directly met, in page one. 人 is always used with modifying words. When 人alone is used, 人 is abstract meaning. "People can give only what they have to others." "People appreciate cards and letters because they take extra effort"
On the other hand, you can see 人々alone is used many times.
>>432 Thanks for the detailed explanation! I was just about to ask the same thing. I've seen 日本語でおk quite a few times by now, but wasn't entirely sure what it means. But you wrote that "When you type 'ok' in Japanese mode, it is typed 'おk.'" So, do most Japanese prefer the romaji-->kanji input method over kana-->kanji? Or is it just the kind of people who visit 2ch a lot? I'll definitely stick to typing with the hiragana keyboard layout so I get used to thinking in kana, but I'm curious about what people actually use.
Oh wow, this 人 thing is way more complicated then I thought. I'll ask my teacher about it, although she can be very unclear sometimes...
As for the meaning of the sentence, I realized that the context is pretty obscure. What I meant to say is that when I speak to people about Zack they never know he is going to USC. Doing a quick google search seems to confirm this though. I'll have to make some friends with theater or film majors if I want any chance to talk to him lol.
>>448 The majority of people use the romaji keyboard layout I think. Some still use the kana keys, though. I remember some learner of Japanese here said she/he was using it too, maybe for the same reason as yours.
I use romaji input, I think it would be hard to get a kana keyboard over here.
But yeah, I just made a stupid mistake. I got paid today ($189), about 19,000円 and I wanted to go cash this at the bank. (It was in a cheque) I get my bank card, I walk half way to the bank, and I forgot the cheque at home!
What's worse is my Japanese teacher is here in 20 minutes so I have to wait 3 more hours before I get any money for dinner D=
As >>451-452 says, the vast majority of PC users type with romaji input method. 2channelers are having fun by not bothering to convert it to ok or OK. Another thing you often see in 2ch is うp, meaning "up." In Japanese we often say アップ instead of アップロード. Even 2channelers who don't good at English know アップ's original English is "up." But they don't bother to convert うp to up. For example, if a 2channeler wants アメリカ人 to upload a Zack's photo ASAP, he would ask him by saying, "早くザックの写真をうpしてくれ"
Another common example is "ようつべ." When I saw this for the first time in 2ch, I was cluless. But soon I understanded what it means. Do you know what it means? Sample sentense:「昨日ようつべで面白いビデオみたよ。」
>but I would normally expect it to be in katakana.
Why do 2channelers bother converting it to Katakana? The basic idea of うp おk ようつべ etc. are that 2channerls don't bother to convert them to up, ok, youtube resepectively.
If a 2channeler type it right, youtube is typed ユーチューブ、not ヨウツベ.
>>458 Yeah, I get the idea with the direct romaji conversion. And I know that it wouldn't be ヨウツベ if they'd convert it properly, but I don't really expect people to know how to pronounce foreign words anyway. I mean, I've spent the last 2 months looking for anime and video games to watch/play, and some of them have titles in German, but always with completely wrong katakana. So when I see a kana word I don't know, I just think of how it would look in romaji.
When I read English written by foreigners who like Japanese anime, I sometimes see they add "ne" or "desu" at the end of English sentences. I understand they are ね and です which come from Japanese.
Do ね and です stick to their ears even though they don't understand full Japanese sentenses that include ね or です? I feel that they want to sound as if they knew some Japanese words.
4 hours south of Toronto in a small town called "Windsor" most people don't like this town very much, we're right across from Detroit. Go find it on google maps!
Also, we had my Japanese lesson today and something confused me. In one example a man was asking a women for her phone number, but first they met. (あいます)however, after he asked for her phone number, she had to "meet him again" ugh it's hard to explain. I guess it was like this:
サトさんはみらこさんにあいます *Asks for phone number* みらこさんはサトさんにあいます *gives him phone number*
If this is the correct way maybe this is a strange question for you guys, but I don't understand why we are using あいます twice. Is this very formal?
>>464 Your post is a perfect example where I would say to you 英語でおk. :p
First, I don't understand the context of
サトさんはみらこさんにあいます *Asks for phone number* みらこさんはサトさんにあいます *gives him phone number*
You mean she couldn't get to know him well when she first met him, so she refused to tell him her number on the occasion and asked him to see him again to get to know him better enough. She is afraid of telling her number to someone who she can't put trust in?
Well anyway I stretched my imagination to understand what you try to mean. You thought it sounds odd to use present tense?
>>464 Hrm well the only distinction is directional. 1. Sato meets Mirako 2. Mirako meets Sato So they have slightly different meanings. Right 日本人?
>>465 That article is almost 2 weeks old! What do you take me for? I've already put an order in for the game!
です is easy to pick out because it ends a sentence. ね is so damn easy to pick out because it's so ubiquitous. I really don't want to post this, but since it shows exactly what you were asking... http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Desu That's from 4chan as you probably guessed.
Thanks for trying to understand >_> I know I'm bad at explaining it. Let me try again... They already know each other, but the verb for meeting is "あいます”I don't understand why it is said twice. The phone number doesn't matter, that's why I didn't post that part of the conversation - the important thing is they appear to meet twice in the same dialogue.
I'm not sure if this makes it more clear or not, if it isn't clear I'll just...stop talking >_>
>>472 A-ha! I think now I understand what you mean and I don't blame you for the question you asked because I think it may be confusing from a learner of Japanese.
I guess the reason why the text book took that approach is to make you Japanese learners learn each sentense's structures, depending on from whose angle you see the incident.
By サトさんはみらこさんにあいます and みらこさんはサトさんにあいます , the fact that the two meet to exchange their numbers is expressed. The former from サト's angle, the latter from みらこ's angle.
I have another online slang question for the Japanese readers here. What does "っぱねぇ”mean? I know it's short for "半端ではない”but what does it mean in the context of nicovideo? I see it all the time and still can't figure it out.
Thanks in advance and I hope you guys don't mind these questions haha.
>>475 It's used to praise something/someone/an act or whatever it is. It's not online slang, I think. Actually, in very casual conversation with friends, young people say ”っぱねぇ””ぱねぇ”or ”半端ねぇ.” It's like "kICK ASS!" "WOW!" or "AMAZING!"
eg.) Person A: I've got an ipod touch. I downloaded lots of free software for it yesterday. Looks at this. This software detects a panty hung on the laundry line in your neighborhood!
More accurately 「半端(ハンパ)じゃない」 is the roots of ぱねえ。 半端じゃない → 半端ねえ → っぱぇ 半端(者) means a person who isn't all there or oddment. 半端じゃない would often be used by bad boys or Japanese motorcycle gangs to flaunt that they were living their way of life wholeheartedly(not half-hearted).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55yr8EkGWQ&feature=related In this video, the singing guy says "defiance is the only medal of honor for men, I have lived with this faith all along. Public walls which is as cold as like always block us, but our dreams we have been drawing in our hearts is not odd(halfway)(胸に描いたこの夢は半端(ハンパ)じゃないから). I tried Sketchy and rough translations.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R55yr8EkGWQ&feature=related You know this style is/ was laughable, so パネェ often includes laugher towards eccentric guys who looks パネェ. FYI we don't see exactly the same type of fashion in public these days, but that kind of wording and mentality more or less exist today.
If you want to know DQN Yankee words, 半端じゃない、夜露死苦、 気合はいってる、命かけてる、etc are important keywords.
You can see writes are ridiculing 瓜田 for his パネェ behavior. But 瓜田 himself seem to prefer the word パネェ too. In 瓜田's case, パネエ is cool word to show manliness. 瓜田純士 is son of legendary biker gang(black emperor) president and 瓜田 himself was bad boy and yakuza.
I think average japanaese won't use パネェ in real life.
Wow thanks for the detailed explanations, I totally understand now. I knew it was some kind of "AWESOME!" praise but just had no idea why. The history, I guess, behind the phrase is also pretty interesting.
パネエ seems to be a buzz word among youngsters more or less. But I think it still contains stupididity and roughness. not a decent word. So adversely it can be used to ridicule someone who seem to prefer to say パネエ.
>>485 Internet is the best tool for attention whores, is it? I guess the number of viewers were one tenth if the player was a man. Just watching her play makes male viewers think as if they played the game with her in her room.
No one probably cares, but I have my experience in Japan to thank for getting me into college. If I hadn't had gone on that exchange I don't know what I would have written about. So here's what I wrote for my college application: http://bayimg.com/image/bapnfaabd.jpg
>>487 Thank you very much for sharing the essay! That's so well-written that it coulld be in Japan's high school textbook. I like the way you depicts your mood shifts, first in the airplane, then after arriving to Japan and then when you were through the entire stay in Japan.
From an English learner's perspective, it is dotted with useful expressions and words. There are some words and expressions that I understand but which aren't in my active vocabulary. I'd give your essay an AAA but you didn't touch on the bonus, which is your host family has a junior high school girl and your fetish so you'd have to settle for AA. :p Was there a rule about total character count to submit it to university? You used the same essay for other prospective universities?
I didn't know there's such a thing as a city anthem. I don't think we have such a song in my city. Did you enjoy the Ferris Wheel right next to the Osaka station? Maybe you've talked about it before but I forgot.
I suspect not all of the students from your high school had a memorable experiences. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them had a terrible experiences and don't want to visit Japan anymore. hehe. Didn't any of your friends complain about terrible host family? Like "What? your host family took you to Osaka castle, USJ and a huge aquarium? My host family didn't take me anywhere. I just took a walk with them in the neighborhood everyday. Besides, my dinner every day was dog food." I know this is an extreme example but I guess some students were complaining about their experiences in Japan on the flight back to Chicago. I want to hear about such stories. If some students on the program have interesting stories to tell, I want you to share them, too.
>>487 If I remember correctly, you don't wear shoes in your house. But in your essay you write "Upon entering my host family's home, I realized you were nowhere near chicago." You took off your shoes and avoided first faux pas and felt prety confident.
That sounds as if you wore shoes in your house and taking them off isn't your custome. Would you explain about that? You mean most of American do take shoes off but they don't take them off right after entering a house? I'm confused.
>>493 Oh, is that right. If that's the case, I still don't get it because he sounds like in the essay he didn't forget to take off his shoes. If it's American custom to take off shoes whether before or after entering a house, it's natural to take of shoes.
Korean guys are thought to be fascinating all over the world because Korean guys are 1) manly - girls like this feature of Korean guys very much 2) self-confident - girls like guys who can make a decision like Korean guys do 3) smart - girls pay great respect for those with brain. So all the girls in the world find Korean guys very attractive. I'm proud of it. :)
>>502 I remember some male crossdressers appeared in a Korean variety show. Gee, as someone pointed out the other day that Korean guys were beautiful, if girls all over the world watched it, they would think the same way. Yeah, I know, I know... I should have added one more secret of Korean guys being popular all over the world.. Korean guys are popular with girls around the world because they are 4) beautiful. I'm awfully sorry for the person who let us here in the thread know Korean guys were beautiful as well as hot.
>>497 i dunno exactly. because i dont come out it. but maybe not. japanese pepole is not care about it except not to be care themselves. but sometimes shocked about treatment about gay.
>>502 I'm not sure if the Japanese are more liberal than Canadians when it comes to homosexuality, but I don't think the Japanese government would allow same sex marriage anytime soon. Mature people don't care much about your sexuality, but kids may make fun of gays.
As for cross-dressing, my girl friend always wants me to dress like a girl, which I don't want to. I don't give a crap about it, but some may consider it pervert.
>>502 I don't know how many people are gay in Japan. As for cross dressers, they don't wear female clothes in broad daylight. They just dress themselves that way at night. Probably there's a club for people who're a cross dresser. I wouldn't want to see a muscular men wearing female clothes and put on makecap.
Some are famous in show business. http://blogimg.goo.ne.jp/user_image/73/a1/51a0cf4e80b86f7ec8c94d6f5efcb7d2.jpg She's very pretty and removed his penis. She's quite popular but before she entered show business, he had been in agony at university. Once she confessed her female friends in her uni that she's a man, girls began to avoid her and she was isolated. That shows living as a cross dresser in ordinary life is still torcher. Once she got into show business and got popular, everybody accepts the the way she is. I wouldn't call her a cross dresser at all. Even if she's not a biologically woman, she is a woman inside and outside. She sometimes do modeling job in fashion magazine for gilrs.
>>377's man's press conference. I wonder how many foreigners here are interested in this incident. Obcsenity charge is too much a word. Public lewdness is better? What he did was screaming late night naked in a park being heavily drunk. Nobody except police officers saw him naked. He had no intention to show his naked body to anybody.
Japanese society is a lot more tolerant to the drunk than western societies. You can see a drunk people sleeping on the bench of a station, in the train, especially at the time when there are many occasions to drink, such as an year end, April when welcoming parties for freshmen in university and workplace are held.
Somebody sober takes care of drunk almost sleeping friends in cherry blossom viewing party outside.
>>488 I'm happy you enjoyed my essay. Let's see, you have a lot of questions lol... I sent that essay to multiple colleges but some had different length requirements. That version is the longest one at 600 words but I had to trim it down to 500 words for one school. That was really annoying because I put so much effort into the 600 words lol.
I actually did not go on the ferris wheel, but I did see it. I did go to Osaka-jo and USJ. I know some of my friends went to the aquarium with their host families.
Only one person didn't really like their host family, but she was being a sour puss. She kept saying the family and host student were really boring. Maybe the rest of us just got really lucky with our host families since we all had fun. One kid had trouble adjusting to Japanese food and he got sick but other then that it was fine. Most of us had similar experiences, although I think I was the only one lucky enough to get a host of the opposite gender lol.
>>491 Hrm well, I may have used a wee bit of hyperbole to make the essay interesting. As >>493 said, it's not uncommon to take off your shoes when entering a house. The difference how ever is that there is no general rule. Usually it's up to the owner of the house to tell you whether to take off your shoes. Sometimes only the kids will take off their shoes and the adults leave them on. In general I'd say that when you invite adults over for dinner, hanky panky, etc. they leave their shoes on. In my house I take off my shoes and we have a mat next to the door to place them. There's no rule in my house - I just prefer to. It might be confusing for foreigners because even if the genkan is full of shoes, it does not necessarily mean to take off one's shoes. A family might just store all their shoes there, but still wear them in the house. In Japan there's a singular rule so that is what is distinct between the West and Japan.
I've been reading wikipedia articles on various military tactics, strategy, weapons, armor, and battles for a couple of hours now.
I can't get enough of this stuff. I grew up listening to stories about the civil war and I've had an endless interest in military logistics/strategy/ tactics since. However, there is no practical way for me to put it use unless I want to work 30 years in the military. to use, though.
One thing which is really interesting about this battle is that the Viet Minh commander spent months preparing for the battle by setting up concealed artillery positions all around the enemy's hedgehog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog_defense).
After the French got their asses beaten pretty bad by the concealed artillery, this happened: >The artillery had been dug in by single pieces... They were installed in shell-proof dugouts, and fire point-blank from portholes... This way of using artillery and AA guns was possible only with the expansive ant holes at the disposal of the Vietminh and was to make shambles of all the estimates of our own artillerymen."[36] The French artillery commander, Colonel Charles Piroth, distraught at his inability to bring counterfire on the well-camouflaged Viet Minh batteries, went into his dugout and killed himself with a hand grenade.
>>521 Are you American? NFL isn't very popular here. There once was a time when it got popular in late 80's to early 90's when Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Steve Young of SF 49ers are dominant in NFL scene. Oh, Dan Marino from Miami Dolphines were pretty well known here.
At that time NFL official shops were machrooming in Japan. I actually bought Washington Redskins T-shirt and 49er's cap. I never wear them at the same time though. It would make me look like an idiot although, not many Japanese didn't know the names of NFL teams so it would have been OK as long as I wear them at the same time in Japan.
In '93 J league, which is Japanese pro soccer league was launched and many people jumped to the popularity of the league and NFL popularity lost its momentum.
I can't help but being amazed by the contracts NHF prospective players get. To much money. But being a pro is dangerous business. Compared to pros in other sports, they are vulnerable and have high risk of getting injured. The years of players being a pro is very short. Still, they can live with handsome money they get after they get retire.
Bo Jackson is fabulous, how could he play both as a baseball player and a football player. Very talented athlete. Deion Sanders, too.
My hair is sticky and beard has grown pretty long. Once I comb my hair with my fingers, they get all sticky. My eys are like those of a dead man. My skin on my face is peeling like a snake casting off its skin. Maybe it's just scurf.
I've been smelly since three days ago, but who cares? I have no social life and stay at home all day. I went to a convenience store to by cigarett two days ago at night to be precise.
I think I'm developing fetish of my own body odor. From the gap between my neck and my shirt, the smell which can't be described in any words even by a renowned novelist coming up. It's an acquired taste so to speak. I think even a skunk wouldn't want to make eye contact with me and they would keep a secure distance from me.
Over the past week, the money supply has shrunk by 60 billion. That despite the government pumping trillions of dollars into the economy through the banks. It seems the banks are just taking the money from the government and holding it, which is keeping the economy from stabilizing. The banks are doing that so that they can improve their financial statements, how the look to the general public, when they were lent the money in the first place so that the banks could lend the borrowed money to the general public. Anyways, the government is getting pissed now and they are thinking of nationalizing all the banks.
In fairness, Deion Sanders wasn't a very GOOD baseball player. I used to live near his house when he played for Dallas; the gates to his driveway had "PRIME TIME" (his nickname) on them.
Kinda arrogant. Perhaps not as much as Terrell Owens, who was also in Dallas. Something about the place attracts jerks. Probably the team owner.
It depends on the sport, of course. Some women are sports fans. I know quite a few who enjoy tennis. The important thing is to appear broadly-educated without being obsessed. Don't quote baseball stats (everyone finds that creepy).
I so addicted to football because its so intricated in terms of strategy. You have to watch video hundred times, memorize those THICK playbook etc.... I mean you have to learn everyday, not just play. This is the characteristic that other sports doesnt have.
I advise you to stop using here to practice English composition. You may be feeling good but everyone would feel just disgusted by your long and meaningless blather.
>>533 I watched the last Super Bowl but I don't watch any regular season games. The strategy of football is complicated. I only know the name, shotgun formation but don't know what it is about. >>524 Ahh. I know the manga, although I haven't read it though.
>>537 Shotgun formation is usually a pass-oriented formation. The notable difference is where a quarterback stands. In usual formation, let say I-formation, a QB stands just behind a center and recieve a snap hand to hand and then starts dropping back. In shotgun QB sets 5yards away from the center and recieve a throwing snap (gun snap) from the center. You are able to survey the field throw ball quickly without dropping back because youre already 5yards behind from the scrimmage line.
The complication is making football fun but hard to approach at the same time.
>>525 Yeah, I kind of enjoying not taking a bath. The longer I don't take a bath, the more stimulous my body odor gets. I enjoy the process. lol
This contradicts with what I wrote but I think I'll bathe tonight because I stink and I can't take it anymore!!!!!!!!! I hope a skunk won't avoid eye contact with me anymore.
>>513-514 Thank you for your respose and sorry for lots of questions. I was curious. I was curious about how you hand in essays through multipul application.
As for host family, I heard troubles of Japanese students staying in America. Some don't get along with host sisters/borthers or host parents and end up changing host family. it's OK if you stay for a week or two but if you stay for a year, chemistry with a host family is a big issue.
Thank you for the explanation about taking shoes off, too. It's hard to imagine, though, when one family' rule is taking off shoes but on a special occasion such as a party, the owner of a family doesn't require guests to take their shoes off. You have to clean floor after guests leave and that's bothering.
That is definitely a sign of alcoholism. I read a few of the informational pamphlets from a Alcoholics Anonymous group while I was in a church (a rare occasion).
>>562 like all other psychiatric problems, if it doesn't affect your life, it's not a problem. so I don't know if drinking by oneself itself instantly constitutes an alcoholism.
If you don't want to be husband of the woman in your workplace, イギリス人, your second choice would be to get married with Susan Boyle. She'll make a handsome deal with a record company and will be an overnight millionaire, billionaire, maybe.
You could quit your job and enjoy NEET status. Seriously, though, her success reminds me of JK Rawling. She had lived on government subsidies until she made splashes in literature with Harry Potter series. What a turn around.
You can be the fisrt man to kiss her. Cheers to イギリス人!!!
Susan Boyle is so fake. I think she is a normal looking person who in trying to get rich makes herself appear ugly intentionally. I don't know if it was her idea originally, nonetheless she is doing what she is doing, which is a fraud of huge propotion.
Will the new flu outbreak a sign of the end of the world as we know it? I hope it is. I think it's better that humans all dead. We are fundamentally corrupt and shouldn't have been made in the frist place. What do you think?
I'm not too concerned. Everyone's in such a panic over it now that I'm certain every hypochondriac in the world will be going to the hospital at the first sign of the sniffles. They should start catching cases much faster now.
I agree that humans are fundamentally corrupt and should be exterminated. If I had a bunch of nuclear weapons I'd do it myself, I'd probably start with China.
>>574 That is exactly how medical and pharmaceutical companies never go down even in a recession. Not that I'm saying they started it, but I'm sure they can secure lots of positions because of this thing.
I don't think we are overlydramatic but sensible. If you look at what's going on around the world with open heart, you will see what we're seeing pretty clearly. Humans should not be.
Yea I doubt this flu thing will be that serious. In the US there have been around 20 cases reported, but it's been discovered that Tamiflu is effective in fighting swine flu. If the world could handle avian flu --which Tamiflu was completely useless against--then I'm sure this will all blow over in a couple months.
>>583 Oh boy, definitely not. In my Japanese class there is one person better then me and a few that are equal. Some of these kids took Japanese in elementary school so they had a head start.
And even then we're not very good compared to the US. There are two standardized test meant to be taken by students of Japanese. The SAT Subject Test and the AP Japanese test. I considered doing taking the SAT version in November last year, but the practice booklet was too hard for me. My classmates and I just did a practice version of the AP Japanese test and that ended in failure. We all thought it was impossible. These tests are specifically designed for seniors in high school who have had even as little as 3 years of Japanese. I am not good at all lol.
The AP test was only created last year, so there was no end goal for high school Japanese. This fucked my class over because our teacher was very relaxed our first 3 years of class. For example, my first year it took most of the class a full year to learn both the hiragana and katakana. That's pathetic. We should have done that in one semester. Second semester should have started with basic kanji (beyond 1-10). I think my class right now is at least one semester behind the standard, maybe even a full year. I don't blame my teacher though, she had no incentive to create a fast paced curriculum until a year ago.
As for me, in an end-of-the-world scenario I'd probably stay inside and talk about it on the internet. I think it'd be cool to see what happens at the end of the world...probably lot's of violence.
>>584 I see. I was curious about top notch high school sudents' and your command of Japanese. Remembering hiragana, katakana and kanji doesn't take brains. It's just the matter of perseverance and repetive training for the most part. So trying to remember them intensively as you say might be important.
>>587 Yes, many of the skilled students in my class are disappointed we didn't start learning more earlier in high school. I plan on minoring in Japanese in college though, it'd be a waste to not keep learning it.
So I was just reading this article on the NY Times about the swine flu: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/27/world/27flu.html?hp The picture shows a thermographic camera being used to monitor travelers at Narita. I guess it's trying to determine if anyone has a fever. Seems like most countries are taking it very seriously.
>>589 I wonder why so many Americans assume anyone can learn language in class through osmosis. Or maybe they know it's useless and just don't want to learn it. The Japanese are notorious for their "engrish," but still better than your average American's French or Spanish.
I don't quite understand why taking a whole year to learn kana could be understandable. What would they think if I said it took half a year for me to learn all 26 alphabets and another 6 months to master the capital version. And I'm supposed to learn 10 simple words the next semester? How much do they have to dumb down language classes?
It's beyond words, literally. The simple 10 words I'm supposed to know by now can't explain how ridiculous it is.
Japs are known as the worst Engrish speakers all over the world. All they can do is say, "herro" with strong Jap accents that's not understandable to most of us. In a word, Japs are undereducated. Why are they that dumbass? Girls all over the world laugh at their horrible Engrish. :P
its true that local japanese ppl speaks horrible shameful and funniest engrish. i used to be like that and i was so embarrassed myself. but still, ppl are trying at least so giv them some credit.
i think more japanse should smoke weed to break the shell.
No matter what Japs do, they can't seem to speak decent English. My American friends say they don't want to hear their Engrish. They also hope Japs will never open their mouths to speak. And I agree with them totally. My ears would suffer if I heard Japs speak in a horrible Engrish.
>>596 I beg to differ. In my humble opinion, reading is a lot harer than speaking. If my memory severs me, it is a proven fact that aural/oral language skills and reading/writing skills are different and that the latter require higher intelligence in terms of brain evolution. Certainly foreign language acquisition could be different from L1 acquisition. There are, however, more similarities than differences in them. Since L2 acquisition is known to follow the same pass as L1 acquisition, it stands to reason that it is possible for a person who is illiterate in a foreign language to be able to speak the language fluently.
As you know Japanese people aren't good at having positive attitude to themselves. Self putdown is common.
This is partly due to Japan lost WWII. Or Just it's been passed down in our blood for ages. Humbleness and reserved attitude can lead to underevaluation.
If we had won the war, we would see less Caucasian people in CM and no western music is popular in Japan. One thing I didn't understand recently is when Japan was crazy about World Baseball Classic last March. One TV station broadcast all the Japan's games. Funny strange thing is they played American band's tune every time they go to a commercial break.
I don't think many Japanese people even think it's odd. But it IS strange, right? WBC is an international event and every team plays games as representitives of their nations. I was like why American band's song?
>>607 Sort of. But I'd say it's a bit of stretch to relate humbleness/reserved attitude/submissive girls/whatever to WWII, let alone to consider an aspect of our pop culture reflecting it. Kids these days have not experienced the war or anything related to it. What kind of young Japanese would care about nuclear bombs dropped on us? I'm not convinced the Japanese pop culture has something to do with WWII.
Well, of course, I could be totally wrong. But fuck that. I say it's bullshit. My opinion is better than yours.
>>609 People like you who can't see things in depth don't understand what I mean. After losing WWII, Japan has been flodded with American culture. If we had win the war, we could have stopped the influx of things American. Even if kids nowadays doesn't experience the war, they're influenced by American culture. If we had won the war, we would adore less blindly things American.
>>610 I fail to see your point. Everyone would agree that the Japanese culture has been influenced by European cultures, especially after the war. At the same time, however, we have been importing a lot of things, tangible or not, from other Asian countries such as China and Korea for more than a thousand years.
Why do we have to get rid of European influences? I admit that the sudden influx, though it has been around us for a century to some extent, could be responded negatively by some. However, I do believe that this kind of viewpoint is too conservative and narrow minded.
You seem to be very xenophobic who claims that, in this time and age, we should be "pure." In my opinion, what we need to do is unite, not fall apart. Mutual understanding is key to join together. And being culturally influenced should never be considered "bad." Ever.
I hate to say it, but u r a moron. Like I said, my opinion is superior. Always.
>>611 I don't know when they came up with it, but probably to a country that has more than 40 centuries history, a baby country aka America was so cute and they believed it would make a beautiful wife.
Not sure why they're still using it, but I'm guessing they're simply on drug or living in a pipe dream.
>>593 >i think more japanse should smoke weed to break the shell. Hahaha, I laughed so hard at this. Is weed common in Japan? In the US it is, but I don't think that's the reason we're stereotypically more outgoing lol.
>>616 I'd suggest you use your own ID instead of relying on anonymity. Otherwise no one would understand what you're talking about. i would like to know which posts are yours. BTW looks like not any one of the Japanese here are using their own IDs, like Americans do. Are you cowards, afraid to be vulnerable to attack by using your own IDs?
>>612 American's influences are the biggest, both economically and culturally. How can you interpret my post is xenophobic?
>>615 If you mean 大麻 by weed, then yes it's getting more common. Sumo wrestlers, univerisity students has been arrested. It was common only among people in show business before but nowadays the spread use among ordinary people are reported. Some university students grew its plant in their apartment.
>>617 Am too lazy to type a fucking trip. I'm pretty sure I'd forget my code for my trip in one minute. Hrm, my browser is more intelligent than me so it should be able to remember it. Alas, I'm too stupid to figure how it works. Well, I guess I'm happy being anonymous. I don't care if I'm making sense or not anyway. Ignore my posts if you don't like me.
>>619 >American's influences are the biggest, both economically and culturally. >How can you interpret my post is xenophobic?
So, what makes you think American songs in TV ads are strange? Why shouldn't they be? We were, are, and will be adopting foreign cultures. It's too radical for you to accept it? If that's the case, I think you're xenophobic.
>>624 I'm not sure if it's due to my fucked up brain and stupidity or your poor writing. When claiming a person is misunderstanding your thought, it's you, and only you that can explain it to him. Thanks.
>>625 Hi, >>625. It's been a while, isn't it? Is every thing going well?
So, you're wondering what are neets' livelihood. Actually I have a good idea. You have a mirror, right? Look at the person in the mirror and say, "Are you leeching your parents or what?"
That's it. You may not believe me, but the person in the mirror will answer you directly to your mind!
Believe it or not, a lot of university students in north america pay their own way through life. Of course they rack up huge student debts (easily $50,000 or more) but they don't leech shit from their parents.
>>629 I see at least two of them. You and me included. By the way, I hate "eh" when said in a British accent. Canadians are ok because they're nice. But you are not.
>>628 Hi 628さん, 久しぶりですね。お返事してくれて有り難う御座います。 So NEETs just leech from their parents, eh? I've noticed a lot of Japanese women seem to live a sedentary NEET lifestyle. They watch DVDs, walk their dog, go to cafés, and if they work it's simple freeter work at best. I was wondering how they pay rent and eat. I can't ask directly because it's rude.
>>627 I was playing center fileld as a kid, and yes it was boring as few kids could drive a ball to center. Though, I was pretty good at batting so it wasn't too bad.
Right was worse than center just because we didn't actually play with pitching (do little kids use tee stands to hit over there?). So the ball didn't move, and all the kids would smack it to the left.
Except the left-handed kids, but I was always spacing out or looking at ants.
>>630 >Believe it or not, a lot of university students in north america pay their own way through life.
And after they graduate, will all of them feed their parents? or at least send some of the money they earn to them? Just wondering. That's the norm in Japan.
As far as I know, most people aren't like that. My parents did pay my way through school and when I suggested that I'd like to pay them back for it they kind of laughed unexpectedly.
But then my mother said "Well, if you're offering!" I guess I can't blame her.
>>638 No, here it's normal to save up for your own retirement through investment plans like 401Ks. These savings are tax-deferred and typically their company will contribute to it as well by matching their payments. This way, their parents will still have an income even after retirement, and won't need any help.
I'm sure anyone would help their parents out if they needed it, that's just human decency.
>>638 Parents are expected to take care of themselves by investing money for retirement. However, if they need financial help their children are expected to provide it. The parents usually move into retirement homes instead of living with their children.
Just out of curiosity, how many of you post on English forums and which ones? I know quite a few 2ch lurkers/posters are also visiting 4chan. Do you post on other forums too?
I'm usually on MacRumors or 4chan and post everyday. If this thread counts, 2ch once in a while, but rarely post. Just lurk. I also browse a lot of other forums and blogs but don't post much. It's like only when I felt I really needed to.
I lurk at few places but I don't really post anywhere except here. I don't visit 4chan but I have friends that do, and they also fantasize about furry animals and young girls. I feel I'm missing out.
>>648 No. You're not missing anything. Furry is evil and pedo is sinful. Don't even think of joining the rotten community. it will defile you, rape you in the ass and then turn you a pedo. Not worth it.
One thing interesting about this thread is, at one time, posts are few and far between and that makes me think not many people are here, but at another time a flood of postes are posted all of a sudden and that makes me think lots of people were lurinking.
Hmm. It's been an hour, and I got only one meaningful reply. I thought this thread was moving so fast today it was the best time to take a poll. But maybe it wasn't after all.
Sorry, real life things just kicked in and I should get going. I'm waiting for your replies.
>>653 I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. I just posted it out of curiosity. Sorry if I offended you.
So, please, please be nice to each other. (I forgot "to" between nice and each other in >>652!) I hope this will not cause another flame. Thanks again. Bye.
Take a poll? I think you are a control freak. I don't like you. Arrogant. I don't want to talk to you. Hopefully next time you post here, you use your own name so i can recognize you.
>>656 Taking a census aka forum poll is fairly common on websites I usually visit. I am not sure if I gave an impression of arrogance, but if I did, I apologize to everyone. I don't want to force anyone to participate. So please ignore all my posts if you don't like the idea.
As for using a name, I'll google later how to use it. I have to go now... I've been a long time lurker, but I am not familiar with 2ch's features such as Name and Sage.
>>668 Haha, in one aspect, he was a post spammer and you can call him a troll, but in another, he was useful to keep this thread busy. If you ask me which I like better, a thread with or withuot him, I like the latter better. It can't be possible for him to be away from Internet, so somewhere in this cyberspace, he must be busy with boasting about his Windows Me PC. I'm not even willing to go and see how he's doing in his own image board.
So I wonder what attracts lurkers here? If you are interested in a topic in this thread, you want to jump in the converstation, right? But some keep lurking?
Are there 4channelers who are in their 30's and 40's?
>>674 I bet you are there on working holiday visa. Nothing can be learned in NZ in my opinion, except how to shave sheep's coat. I bet you chose NZ because it's a safe country.
If you have balls, walk in south bronks, shouting "yo nigger, yo nigger." NZ isn't a place for men with guts. Me? I'm NEET and socially reclusive man so I have to start with going out ou home. haha
LOL soz man I'm chicken but I wasn't in NZ with working holiday visa. I don't think they can even post a sentense in this thread like what we doing right now.
I'd rather not to go in place where so many gansta wannabes hang around, well there were so many Whigga, pacific islanders and maoris in place like Otara but I wsn't living in there anyway. NZ is not that safe country, just things won't come up in media.
NZ is great country for Car&Motorcycle enthusiasts. Slack law lets you drive&ride almost everything and access to winding roads from centre of town in 30mins.
I was riding my bike almost everyday while studying at uni. But because of that I failed one paper and final exams mark was bad wwww
>>678 Is it true that many cars in NZ are second-hand Japanese cars? I heard it somewhere.
Do you know the Kiwi who lives in a ski resort in Hokkaido? She makes a high quality English-teaching video "EVER DAY" and uploads it on youtube. If you're interested I'll put a link on here. She has boyfriend so don't expect to going out with her.
She sometimes do an interview with a guest to the show in English. You can go there and be on the show.
>>679 Yep, and it's RHD so it feels like your in 80's-90's Japan lol If you go further to the country side you can even see rusty jap imports from 60's-70's I heard they used to make Corolla in local factory but the quality was "kiwi quality" www
Ever day? Not Everyday? Nop I don't know anyone from Hokkaido. I have(had) Kiwi gf too ^^
>>685 Ahh, Right Hand Drive. I look it up in a dictionary on line and it says Random House dictionay and I had no clues.
Here are links to some of her videos. She's so nice as a person and as an English teacher. Amazing. Just Amazing. She's been making videos every day for almost three years.
You guys can actually understand what she is saying? I have to listen real closely to hear what the fuck she is saying because she has such a weird accent. For a while I thought she was speaking another language besides English until I turned up my speaker volume and heard that she was actually speaking English... just speaking it really weirdly. I hope not all Aussies speak like that.

>>689 I'd have to admit I don't understand all of what she says. Sometimes I don't understand just about 60% or so. But the reason I don't understand some parts aren't because of her NZ accent but the speed at wich she speaks, I think. I think her shows aren't for begginers. But she writes down each and every words she speaks in a blog so if you don't understand or catch some words, you can always check scripts.
She's not Aussie but Kiwi. Don't say you didn't know Kiwi means New Zealanders.
>>693 This isn't a chat room so there's no such things as "missed" or anything, you can always response to any post. That's the beauty of a forum.
The only forum where I write in English is here. My writing skill owes this thread. But if someone asks me where I practice writing, I tell him about other forum. Because I don't want them to know I frequent 2ch's board. Some people have a negative image to 2ch and this thread is pervertish and I'm one of the posters who post pervertish things.
If it makes anyone feel any better, I'm an American with kiwi friends and I find her accent nearly impenetrable. It's not bad, just has a bit of a drawl that throws me off.
Of course I say that, yet I'm from Texas. But I don't really have a Texas drawl like most people there do.
Oh wow, I've been looking around on wikipedia at various historical battles like I do a lot and I've recently started looking at the "Imjin War": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imjin_War Yea, it is an absurdly long and detailed page.
Yea, this wasn't written by Koreans or anything. What is even more hilarious is the linked battles on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Okpo Under casualties for Japan: at least 50 ships, around 4000 dead soldiers, numerous captured Under casualties for Korea: One wounded
I'VE NEVER LAUGHED SO HARD AT A WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE BEFORE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Sacheon_(1592) Under casualties for Japan: every ship that fought in battle Under casualties for Korea: four severely wounded soldiers, Admiral Yi was shot in the arm
Yea fucking right. I should probably bitch and moan about this on the wikipedia discussion pages... but I don't feel like actually doing anything about it.
I used to post a lot on 420chan.org as well as 4chan's /g/ (technology) and lately /jp/.
>>701 4chan is a clone of 2chan.net, which in turn is named after this site. And yeah, moot's definitely a Japanophile. In fact, he's the one responsible for popularizing the word "weeaboo."
How many people here know Utada Hikaru will release her second album in US? Her US debut album fell flat with sales of just over 50 thousand. Some say it's just the matter of marketing.
I think she'll just get popular among Asian Americans. I can't imagine white girls'll be crazy about her. what do you think?
>>714 The Rain, a famous Korean guy all over the world, was chosen as the most influential person of the year on the internet. He's popular all over the world. It seems girls on this planet couldn't resist temptation to vote for him. The poll showed that girls in the world have absolutely huge interest in Korean guys. I'm proud of it. :)
>>714 The same thing has happened before. 2channelers tried to make Masashi Tashiro to be the Time's Person of the Year and he won. What is tashiro famous for? Check for yourself.
Do Japanese university-aged people (either students or NEETs) play internet poker? I read a lot about nerds in japan making a killing on the stock market, what about internet poker? Or is it illegal in japan? You can still open an international bank account probably. It's a solid way of making money for nerds.
Korean guys are considered really amazing all over the world. The news says that Korean Wave makes all the girls in this world enthusiastic about Korean guys. Those girls say they want to marry a Korean guy because K guys are masculine, smart, self-confident, and gentle to girls. Among those girls, American girls are especially mesmerised with Korean guys. American girls love those characters of Korean guys. They say Korean guys are all lookers, so how could they decline invitations if they are asked out by Korean guys, who has what American girls hope for men? And Korean Wave has invaded Europe as well. European girls doesn't want to be kept out of the loop, so once American girls started the Korean guys are cool campaine, they followed suit. Like virus, Korean guys popularity spread among the girls all over the world. Interestingly, after Korean dramas were aired in Africa, African women has been crazy for Korean guys. It's really surprising. No Korean guy didn't think they would become popular in Africa, where most of Korean guys have never been to. But I must admit to you I'm really proud of it. :)
The vast majority of (winning) players won't live off their winnings or anything, but poker, especially no limit hold'em, is 50% math and 50% perception. There's no luck involved because you play so many hands it all evens out, so as long as you put yourself in mathematically favorable positions, your long term result will be positive.
>>736 You're just an indoor person who don't like hang around with people. But you have the traits that can lead you to NEET. Be cautious.
When you visit a website you often see a flashing banner like thing. "You are the "1000000th" visitor congratulations!" This banner isn't put on by the website owner, right? How does this happen?
A website is a collection of files and these files are stored in a sever as far as I know. So a person nothing to do with the website invades into the site and add a file that enables the website to display the banner?
I once clicked that kind of banner and was led to another sight where I was asked to write my personal information. I ignored the sight, of course.
What happens is an ad company will pay a website owner to display ads on their websites, the owner can not really choose what sorts of ads they put on. So, often times these ads are put there by the companies randomly chosen out of a pool of many ads.
I only like being around certain kinds of people. Gargantuan black women who resemble elephants make up the majority of the population here, so I don't really go out too much.
When I was living in Chicago and Ohio though, I went out a ton because the people there were cool.
>>741 That guyt again... He must be your favorite.
I don't know why exactly... Maybe he speaks so fast. I don't understand what he' saying much while the guy who reports his life as ALT in JET program is easy to understand.
Read my lips, stop shooting a video in working hours.
When in fact, "You are the "1000000th" visitor congratulations!" are false information that lures visiters to another sight for online fraud or something, the owner of the website should do something to stop the banner.
If I'm not wrong, I think I have seen such banner on youtube before. Not recently.
>>744 You don't go out often so you have less chance of getting infected... Oh,,,and long time no see. I have lot less chance to get infected. Different from you, I don't even have to go to university. My fort is this house.
>>741 Aha ha ha. He's right on the money. I'd love to do 5-min-n'-wrap-it-up, but I'd look like a super cold, impersonal, unkind and rude Japanese. After all, we're Japanese and have to say good-by for 20 minutes. FML.
>>736 You might be interested in this: http://loli.pant.su/ I think you already know that site though.
Oh god I didn't know about that O_O Thanks so much, I bookmark'd it faster then Odin riding his Norse chariot through the gates of Valhalla. (Do you guys get it? That's obscure even for English people lol.)
I only knew about moe.imoutu and some danbooru like sites, but this site looks great.
I'm afraid I'm going to have the police bustin' down my door if I look at any of these pedophile websites. A christian nation does not approve of such indecent things.
>>747 I'd nom nom the delicious topping, if you know what I mean.
>Odin riding his Norse chariot through the gates of Valhalla.
I think I heard of them but don't know who Odin is or what Valhalla is. To me, he's just another mediocre god riding a chariot. In Japan, he slices mobs in a flash, if you see what I mean.
>>748 Muslims don't eat poke, and Christians don't eat lolis. While we are enjoying peace brought by Buddha, you two won't stop killing each other claiming that infidels are immoral. Christians are so hated they got suicide attacks every single day. Even airplanes hit in the buildings. I bet they'll nuke 'em in return. The world is fucking hilarious with those arrogant retards lol

I know a few people who have died from riding a motorcycle. You should be careful. Crashing on a motorcycle, even if you are going slow, will probably send you to the hospital. Skin is not very tough when compared to pavement.
NEET shouldn't enjoy bike riding. They shouldn't have any hobbies that costs money. All hobbies NEET like me can have is savoring their Body Odor. It doesn't cost anything. You can save water and electricity/gas bills to make water hot.
He's from UC Berkley Japanese literature major. One or two year since graduation. Now his band wants to cut a deal with Japan's major record label. He's cool man.
I hope アメリカ人 'll be as fluent as him in four or five yeears.
Korean guys are considered wonderful among girls all over the world. I saw a lot of white girls comment on Korean guys as being hot and sexy online. They are all true. I admit Korean guys popularity lies mainly in their appearance and looks for the first timers. As they get to know more about Korean guys, however, those girls start to mention how fantastic Korean guys are inside as well. They're romantic, smart, well-educated, and really sweet. The result: The more white girls know about Korean guys, the more they love Korean guys. It can't be helped. I'm proud of it. :)
>>760 I don't know what you want to say. I'm a Korean who speaks fluent English. Seems like you are just jelous of Korean guys. If you want to know more about Korean guys, check how popular Korean guys are on youtube. Girls all over the world claim they want to have a Korean boyfriend. People say Korean guys are like white in Asia, probably because they are gentle to girls.
I have the right to use this board as much as I like. Like everyone does. I should let everyone know how popular Korean guys are all over the world.
Japs are unpopular all over the world. That's true. You are a living proof. Everyone has the right to post anything here as long as it's written in English here like I do in fluent English. I'll let the world know how very nice of Korean guys are. And your English isn't as good as you thought it would be, Japs.
>>764 What the fuck? I don't give a shit about ignorant idiots like you. Japan is famous for porn videos. Japs don't have the right to say anything like that. Japs spread shitty porn all over the world. kkk
>>749 Ahh that reminds me, I really need to finish FFX I stopped playing a long time ago. It was so boring that I don't care if I get spoilers now. That said, I'll probably cry when I finish it.
>>747 Norse mythology is used a lot in animes and mangas, so an otaku would definteily get it.
>>768 Hmm? I have no idea why you think so. Students can understand me, and I'm Japanese? Damn it, I should have written something trickier so Jap students couldn't get what I meant. lol
Sorry i said too much. I admit you write excellent English, but I'm just sick and tired of you telling us the same thing over and over again, day in day out, about how nice Korean guys are, etc. Tell us something else please or I'll dub you the "brain-dead" Korean guy.
>>777 Sometimes, even if a game is boring, there is a small obligation to finish it. Because finishing is better than giving up, right? I guess it's kind of useless though, if he doesn't care either way if he gets spoilers or not!
I think I stopped playing FFX around the time you fight Seymour for the last time.
I also stopped playing FFVII right when I got to the final boss battle with Sephiroth. I even went to the trouble of getting that Knights of the Round summon to beat Sephiroth... and then I just quit once I got to him. Weird.
>>779 Maybe you just didn't feel it was worth it after a while. xD I get that sometimes. I'm liable to give up a game if I go through a lot of trouble to do some sort of mission for a couple hours, then get a game over without saving. =_=;
One sad thing is, American people don't have the chance to play Sora no kiseki (legend of heroes 6). It really is a fantastic game. Good story with attractive characters.
>>777 Well I should've been more specific, it's the gameplay that was utterly boring. Story got boring too but not entirely, as there are some things I still want to know about and I definitely want to see the ending.
>>778 Yeah that's exactly it, you know what I'm talking about. Obligation. Lol
>>779 I think that's where I stopped playing. The battle where you fight Seymour and some dark stuff merged with him.
Korean guys are considered stupid among girls all over the world. I saw a lot of white girls comment on Korean guys as being boring and disgusting online. They are all true. As they get to know more about Korean guys, however, those girls start to mention how stupid Korean guys are inside as well. The result: The more white girls know about Korean guys, the more they hate Korean guys. It can't be helped. I'm proud of it. :)
i know some of my relatives have bought a bunch of food and crap they don't need in preparation of a quarantine or something even though there hasn't been an infection in their state yet.
NEET is the strongest when it comes to epidemic. Why bother preparing for potential spread of the flu when they don't go out. No contacts with people makes them free from infection. Although staying home without exposing themselves to sunlight and decent amount of exercise might weaken their immune system so that's a disadvantage.
Other than that, NEETs is the ones who survives. NEETs know survival tactics like cockroaches has survived Ice Age.
Wouldn't that be more a hikkikomori? NEET's can still go outside, they just don't go to school or have a job. But a Hikki can not go outside unless it's like 3 in the morning, but even then maybe it's hard.
But a NEET doesn't have any leisure money, he can only afford the cost of living. Therefore, he can't afford to do anything outside. Also, since he doesn't have a job or anything, he can't meet people so he doesn't know anyone in real life. He doesn't have an excuse to go outside.
That's right. Thumbs up. I didn't expect you guys to know the word, "hikikomori" so I settled for "NEET" instead. Hikikomori don't work so you can call them NEET although in some cases, NEET have friends while in almost all cases, hikikomori have no friends. Serious hikikomori don't go out of the room and even don't talk with their parents.
So, what's the word for hikikomori in English? I have seen "Socially withdrawn person" or "socially reclusive person."
>>799 Good explanation. But some NEET have done a part-time job in the past and have a little bit of saving and some have social life.
Actually, the only word I can think of in English is "Hikikomori" we sort of...took the word, in anime circles anyway. If it was maybe a psychologist describing a person like that he might say "acute social withdrawal" or "anti-social" even though anti-social means more criminal in behavior.
>>801 I see. As you say, anti-social might not be a suitable word because hikikomori don't disturb anyone outside of their house.
I wonder why hikikomori is known in anime circles overseas? Are there any characters who is hikikomori in anime? Or anime fans overseas have some traits similar to hikikomori and they are sensitive enough to get to know the word?
I believe the closest English word for hikikomori is "hermit". I think hikikomori implies that the person is withdrawn on account of some kind of mental disorder, while hermit is just someone who never goes out because he is a misanthrope or just like peace and quiet.
Hikikomori...... Someone don't go out to school or job. Why? That one doesn't get hurt. There are people who like to hurt others, who are responsible for making someone unable to lead its life. Who's responsible? We are because we don't assist the hikikomori to speak out its mind.
This thing is insane. It is a system which launches counter missiles towards any enemy missiles.
This system would be pretty much useless if it fights a vehicle with the same system. I'm not sure if this is on any armored vehicles at the moment, but both Israel and America are spending a shitload of money to get it ready.
>>805 I don't quite understand why some people think weapons intended to kill tons of people are cool. It doesn't matter if it's a defensive means. IMHO, war is horrible, terrible, and immoral whatever pretext you'd make up. It's homicide. Killing people for a political or religious reason can't be justified.
It's funny to see Americans ban child porn while they allow those supposedly cool military related things on the internet. I do think pedophiles and predators should die in a fire, but military fanboys are way more disgusting.
It's my personal opinion, so don't take it personally.
None taken. You're right. There is logic to what America does, though. The government wants people to volunteer for the military, so they promote it. They make it look cool and heroic through all kinds of advertising. Christianity doesn't like pornography, so politicians try to ban it in order to gain more popularity.
>>805 Is it the same technology applied for anit-ballisitc missle? I heard it detects heat of missle and counter attack.
In early april commotion against North Korean missle/satellite launch must have been a topic in America. It is getting a technology which enables bollistic missles to reach America.
On that occasion Japan deployed vehicles that carried anti ballisitc missles. Weapons are something to kill people but technology itseld is just amazing. Fighter jets, battleships, Aeges ship are all to kill people but technologies used for them are just mesmorizing.
>>804 I do feel sorry for hikkis sometimes when I think about. Usually they are driven to that state for some reason, usually bullying or high expectations... But also, It's the hikki's responsibility to persevere and better themselves. They have a right to live a beautiful life,but they are wasting it away. It's very sad. It is society's fault, but the hikki person also needs to strengthen their spirit. Maybe I don't understand their problems well, as an American, but this is all I can say from what I know so far. >_>;
Korean guys are absolutely popular among girls all over the world, especially in America. American people find Korean guys very fascinating because they love masculine, self-confident, and smart guys. As a matter of fact, they pay a visit to Korean towns in order to find a Korean guy to date. As you know, American girls are also a self-starter, so they don't waste any time to go out with a guy. American girls and Korean guys love each other. This trend spawned a new wave. Europian girls started having great interest in Korean guys. They know Korean guys are considered white asian, so they expect Korean guys to choose Europian girls as their girlfriends. It's not surprising, of course, considering the popularity of Korean guys in America, Korean Wave and Korean high-tech products. You know, American people can't live a single day without Korean high-tech products and Korean guys now, and I'm proud that Europe will enjoy being together with Korean high-tech products and Korean guys. :)
American girls should make use of any situation in order to be with Korean guys. American girls are aggressive and Korean guys are romantic. They are meant for each other. American girls are interested in Korean guys. Korean guys won't ignore their desire to be with Korean guys. :)
>>814 Wow! How creepy. I've never seen it before. The technology used in it is great. It loses balance but it gets back to the way it walks right away. It can walk in any terrain.
Probably, They equip it with GPS and load it with a bomb and make it get to a target? It doesn't get tired. I doesn't get hungry, althoguh it requires electricity or something.
Once they know where Bin Laden is, they can use the dog-like robot.
Yea, really, Japan is a relatively small archipelago and already has a shitload of people on it (with a high cost of living). The fact that a bunch of shitheads come over and overcrowd it even more must be pretty frustrating.
oh, by the way. I know a few people here like trance, drum n' bass, techno, jazz, electronic jazz, etc. I've been listening to this online radio for ages which is fucking fantastic for that sort of music. they play real quality stuff here: http://somafm.com/
Today's new vocabulary: archipelago (ark-pEluh-go).
I think I heard it once or twice but didn't bother to look it up in a dictionary to check the meaning and spelling. So, it means a group of islands, doesn't it? I kind of knew the meaning intuitively, but now Tennessean used it referring to Japan, its meaning and usage are clear. I even learned the spelling.
Sure, I watched anime when I was a kid but as I grew older I watched less of them. I haven't watched anime since middle school.
As for manga, some adults read manga even in their 20'sand 30's even if they aren't Otaku but regarding anime, no Otaku watch it in their 20's and 30's. There are manga for adults. The story line evolves around workplace and all.
I also don't understand why otaku want to collect figures after they grow up.
They can't beat Noriaki in any way. I don't like the way they move their hands like Black hip hoppers. They imitate Black rappers and think they're cool.
Noriaki redicules them and tries to imply how they look stupid by making himself pretend to be a Japanese rapper in his legendary video.
Back in 1999, I had no real interest in English language or foreign culture, (except computer games) but I remember watching this several times a day. It was just too catchy....
I can't believe you guys hate Japanese rappers (esp. Zeebra) after this totally ghetto video. You are the one who is pathetic. You talk to the fuckn sponser.
>>853 The song was heavy rotation here in Japan, too.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUjo9O4mA3M&feature=fvst This song was played very often on the radio. But it was from 2000 not 1999. When I first watch the music video, I was impressed with the spread of Japanese animation worldwide.
>>854 Yeah, Japanese anime suddenly started to become a lot more popular around here in the late nineties. I guess it's because of the internet becoming more widely used. Other than some stuff I watched when I was a small kid, this music video from 1997 was my first contact with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lbQCf8F1JsE Ghost In The Shell also was the first full-length anime movie I watched, because I googled for the name of the movie used in that video -- ten years later.
Daft Punk is a french group right? France's otaku history is long. I read somewhere that they were already otaku long before North American people started to appreciate anime. I think thats why Daft Punk likes Reiji Matsumoto's old school art.
Speaking of rap and anime, you've all probably seen Kanye West's "Stronger", right? It samples a bit from a Daft Punk song. The music video's pretty much one big tribute to Akira.
http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1978469 I'm pretty much addicted to Nicovideo now. I can't go back to YouTube: compared to Nicovideo, YouTube's video quality is...
On a side note: I've seen a few sites dedicated to translating Japanese music into English. Are there any good sites that are dedicated to translating English music into Japanese?
>>857 I tried googling, but there no good music translation sites. Instead I found a Yahoo Answers sort of webpage saying it's illegal to upload lyrics (including translation) to a website. I don't know if it's true. It's stupid yes.
>>859 Ah ha ha. I don't know what it's like in Japan, but in most English-speaking countries Yahoo! Answers is thought to generally be a cesspit of stupidity.
Anyway, maybe it's something that's technically illegal, but that people are rarely charged for? Otherwise, you'd expect all these sites like azlyrics, sing365, lyricsmode, and lyrics007 to have been shut down by now.
>>832 Actually, that was my old one. Now I have a SanDisk Sansa inscribed with "ALMOST AS COOL AS COOL TAK".
>>570 I'd marry her for the money and the cat. But really, she seems to be getting more publicity outside of the country than in it. Her voice is pretty good, but not really a match to professionals. But she did choose a very fitting song.
>>866 As in, there is no such thing as detention? From my understanding, japanese schools are very serious about having harmony (not standing out too much), But it's not a big deal to skip school...
>>867 I don't know if I understand "detention" correctly. But I think there's things like this. A teacher tells a bad student to come to faculty room after school and tells him/her not to talk during classes, not to be late for school, not to skip classes because of laziness. Of course a teacher warns these kids not to do that on the spot but if he/she doesn't show a sign of improvement, then a teacher tell them to come to faculty room to behave.
It all depends on the school, I guess. My school was fairly tight about everything but the students were far away from stupid like DQN, so they didn't have to do anything. As for attendance, you'd just end up not being able to graduate if you skipped too much. But if you were unfortunately settled for a DQN school, you'd get to see all kinds of wild stuff going on in a classroom, like some are playing games, chatting aloud, wrestling in the back, etc. I bet there's nothing the school can do about them.
I'm in my thirties and when I was a student. physical punishment was the norm. If a student chats during classes, runs in corridor or do things against school's rules, it was not rare that the student got physical punishment such as slapping in the face.
My classmate at junior high was slapped in his cheek near his ear by a teacher. That broke his eardrum. That was terrible but his parents didn't sue the teacher or anything. I think his parents didn't want things to be a big deal. If the incident happened this day and age, it would have been a big deal.
Now, physical punishment by a teacher is a lot less acceptable. When I was a student, parents put more trust in teachers and relied on them. Teachers were respected more.
>>870 Well, >>871 kind of has it, depending on the school. Usually a teacher will keep a student behind after school, either to lecture, make them grade papers, or just sit doing absolutely nothing.
>>872 Woah, that's pretty crazy! electronics were allowed at school? and geez, wrestling, that sounds like just a hassle for the teachers. Our school had security walking around all the time. Usually security handles the bad kids, or tells kids to get out of the halls and go to class. The few we had were actually ex-marines and kind of scary at first, but they were pretty friendly to good students.
>>873 Well, i don't think violence is the answer... but it's true, teachers should be respected more. But also, I think parents should take more responsibility for their children as well.
I read somewhere that a record number of teachers are suffering from depression and taking a long sick leave in Japan. They lose confidence in skills of organizing students and leadership. Parents complains to teachers about trivial things and teachers can't get advice from senior teachers because working environment is not so good and that leads each teacher to be isolated.
Teachers tries to handle kids who behave badly and parents who demand too much. Plus they can't ask for cooperation from their colleagues and they get isolated and that leads to serious depression.
It's a fact that this thread is full of Otakus and NEETS and all that jazz but when you ask something about anything Japanese and Japanese culture, you can get very detailed answers.
His videos are very interesting and informative. His twitter account says he's a Video Marketing Consultant in Tokyo. No wonder his videos are great, editing, sound effects, camera work and all.
The girl in this video is fabulous. I was surprised not only at her fluency but also her British accent. Not many Japanese English learners speak with British accent. She lived in UK for 7 years.
If you have time to watch her interview, tell me what you think, イギリス人. I want to hear your honest opinion.
I'm so dumbfounded at this video that I don't understand if it's a joke or not. By the way they answer, I think they aren't acting but serious about answering. What do you think?
That video is only asking people in what appears to be California. That is cheating. People in California have less brain activity than a golden retriever. However, it isn't a secret that America's education is complete shit in comparison to other affluent countries. The government spends over half the fucking budget on the military. Most areas in America I've been are in worst shape than a third world country.
I think that video is supposed to just be a joke. The guy answering yes to the question about Star Wars had to of been joking.
>>895 Meh. You can shoot a video like that to make anyone look stupid, be it Americans, Japanese or Europeans. Ask enough people and you're bound to get a few stupid answers, no matter where you are. Or better even, just pay people 10 bucks or so to say retarded stuff right from the bat. The only really stupid people involved are the ones who take everything they see on TV as facts, in my opinion.
An endemic is when a disease stays somewhat contained within the people of a population. An epidemic is when it becomes widespread across a population. Pandemic is a disease spreading across continents to many populations.
>>904 I couldn't find anything on "hademic". However, an epidemic occurs when cases of a disease in an area exceed what is expected. An endemic disease is constantly present in an area, but at a low level. A pandemic is an epidemic that spreads through a large region, such as across a continent, or worldwide.
I borrowed my wife's PC without asking her and was surfing the Net. I was enjoying porn websites spree, watching vulgar photos and all that. Believe me. Now I can't remove a porn image desplayed on the monitor for some reason. An image of Winnie the Poh was there on the back of the monitor before, but now an image of Toyomaru with an electric dildo inserted you-know-where is displayed. It's been there and it won't go. I tried rebooting in vain. I've got to get her PC back to the way it was ASAP. She'll be back from her night shift in no time. (She's a certified nurse, by the way.) I need your help. It's urgent!!!! The OS of her PC is Windows ME. Thank you.
Hello everyone, I'm new to the thread! >>911 Is the porn image the new wallpaper of your desktop? If so, try looking up any Winnie the Pooh image, right clicking and choosing "Set as Wallpaper" I hope this is what you means! (If she does find out, hopefully she'll understand Males do look at porn, you know?)
>>911 Tell your wife the truth. Pooh started srtipping the costume while you were online, and now refuses to put it back on. It's GW, she deserves some days off to have fun too.
Could somebody give me some information about the new feature that appeared on Nicovideo recently? What I'm saying is: what's the site at uad.nicovideo.jp/main/ about?
>>912 >>911 is a translation of one of the 2ch's famous joke writing circulated from board to board, thread to thread by copy and pasted. Your instruction is informative, though.
And welcome aboard! How long have you been lurking here? Do you study Japanese? If so, how long? Where do you live?
>>914 Poooh and Toyomaru, porn actress (already retired from the job) are two completely different things. It's impossible Pooh turn into Toyomaru, just by taking clothes off. lol
>>916 Hahaha, I guess I've been had! I did come to this board sometime ago, but I accidentally forgot about it orz I would like to study Japanese, but I'm not very motivated so that's a major roadblock from me. Lastly, I live in Canada! Have a good sleep too!!
>>915 Their functions change around here and there too often. Honestly, I can't really catch up with them. It looks like an advertisement feature that would cost you if you wanted to promote some video. Unless you upload your own videos or something, it's not worth it.
Honestly, from an American girl's point of view, Korean guys are the best of all the people in this world. Korean guys are thought to be polite, well-educated, hot and sexy. That's why all the girls (mainly in America) are mesmerised with Korean guys. If you are with a Korean guy, it's considered you are cool and everyone is jealous. All the girls all over the world try to ask out a Korean guy, but if you are not pretty, you'll be turned down. If a Korean guy says Ok, then it's proven you are so cute and attractive that you can get whatever you want. That's without saying. Many girls are like participating in a beauty competition when they try to express their feelings to Korean guys. Korean guys are that popular all over the world. I'm proud of it. :)
I'M AN AMERICAN GIRL SON OF A BITCH KOREAN KOREAN IS PIG DO YOU WANT KIMCHI? DO YOU WANT STARCRAFT? KOREAN IS PIG DISGUSTING KIM JONG-IL IS A MURDERER FUCKING KOREA
>>920 That's correct. I hear Korean Wave has been influencing even West Asia such as India, Iran, and what not. Korean guys popularity has become worldwide. But as an American girl, I definitely won't let Korean guys ignore us. :( We should keep Korean guys interested in American girls as they have been so far!!!
>>923 What exactly do you mean? Mexican guys aren't popular even in the small part of the world. And I haven't heard Mexican Wave exists. High-tech industries doesn't exist in Mexico, either. You can't compare Mexico with Korea. So no one could understand you.
The more the sun shines brightly, the darker the shodow becomes. To put it easily, the more girls are interested in Korean guys, the more guys are jealous of Korean guys. It's understandable. But girls all over the world don't give a shit about guys with ugly minds like that. Korean guys are sunshine, no matter what dark minded guys say.
Yay for Korea!!! Korea rulez! Every one of the girls all over the world is a huge fan of Korean guys!! American girls are yours, K-boys. French girls are also yours. British girls will do anything you say, Korean guys. Germany girls are born to serve Korean guys. Jap girls obey whatever K boys want them to do. Chinese girls are happy to have a Korean guy as their boyfriend. Korean guys are super popular among girls all over the world. That's the only thing I know for sure is true.
Korean guys popularity is more infectious than the swine flu is, you know, there have been only about two tousand people who caught the swine flu, while Korean Wave has tens of millions of girls who're bugged by Korean guys hotness.
>>948 I broke my bone when I was running. I triped over and broke my bone. It sure hurt but I never thought my bone was broken. I went to a doctor and was x-rayed. That time was worse than the minute I tripped over. It was winter and I had to take off my clothes one by one. The broken bone was a collar bone so taking off clothes was really tough I sweated pretty hard and almost vomitted.
That was the most close to death moment other than when I got out of my mom's womb.
>>950 Yours is nothing compared to mine!! Mine is that I was riding my bicyle when a bus passed me so close that I could touch it with my upper left arm! I thought I was surely gonna die!
One thing I thought while watching the news on TV was that Japan was one of the most advanced places in the world. I mean there still is not one swine flu case in Japan. Isn't that something? I'm proud of being Japanese and pity people living in other countries.
when i was elementary school student, i played with my friends in a school ground after class. i jumped up to iron bar that is called TETSUBOU in japanese, that is 1-merter high, so i started walk on the iron bar, after two or three step i slipped and fell down to the ground. but i fell down on the iron bar with open leg, i mean i hit my penis with iron bar. that was really hurt, but my ball and penis was all right. it was kind of miracle. this is kind of near death experience.
I took out my boner when I saw a Korean guy running outside. I flipped over and took out my boner. I sweated pretty hard and busted all over the window.
>>954 Your balls could have been crushed and you would have become unproductive!! What a close call that was! I'm glad that you can talk about it as something of a joke.
Many years ago, a giant ball of death bacteria was rolling around inside my head, destroying everything it touched. I was about 2 weeks away from it hitting my brain and killing me when the doctor found it. I had to get surgery and all the lost bones replaced with titanium ones. I was very close to death without even knowing it.
Even now I have to be careful to not do anything too crazy because the fake titanium bones have a small chance of coming apart if my head gets rattled too hard, which would probably kill me.
>>965 If the bacteria was rolling in your head, it must have hit your brain already because brain occupies a large part of your head. If you have a bird brain, small like that, then I know what you mean.
A song I last heard around 10 years ago just popped into my head, out of the blue. I even remembered the lyrics and melody with perfect accuracy. Crazy.
>>891 You can tell she's been living in the south of the country; her dialect is quite specific. She speaks like someone who has grown up in the outskirts of London.
The memory of breaking up with a Korean guy still haunts me. When he walked out the door, I felt I was horribly mistaken. I shouldn't have let him go. A korean guy being with me was a dream come true. I felt really proud of it, boasted about it to my friends, and I remember it really was nice to be with him. He looked gorgeous, manly and sexy, as Korean guys go. He was so so popular among girls around us. Korean guys means a special gift to girls all around the world. So my friends said I should have done anything to stop him leaving me. But I failed. The only remedie I can think of is effective is find another Korean guy. Korean guys are beautiful. I think I'll manage somehow this time. :)
The memory of breaking up with a Korean guy still exhilarates me. When I succeeded in going over the fence of confinement, I felt I was at last emancipated. I should have run away from him earlier. A Korean guy being with me was a nightmare come true. I felt really debilitated by it, complained about it to my friends, and I remember it really was repulsive to be with him. He looked meager, savage and sticky, as Korean guys go. He was so so unpopular among girls around us. Korean guys means a booby trap to girls all around the world. So my friends said I should have done anything to escape from him. But I had failed. The only remedy I can think is effective is to find another guy who is not Korean. Korean guys are ugly. I think I'll manage somehow this time. (*_*)
The Korean guy told the girl he was a Japanese when he asked out. Then, she said yes. That's the reason she dated with Korean guy. She was disapointed when she heard of that he was Korean. I feel sorry for her.
Looks like I called it on swine flu being all media hype... Knock on wood.
I just read today that 18 schools closed in Illinois all over 41 "probable cases". Not sure if 2ch is familiar with this expression, but *facepalm* describes it perfectly.
>>972 So from your ears, she sounds like she speaks with British accent. (outskirts of London) To think she went to UK in late teens, (mabye after graduating Japanese high school) it's great she picked up British accent.
>>978 No swine case is reported here. Two people were suspected of being infected with it but turned out that they had just other type of flus. I hadn't known *facepalm* until someone copy and pasted its AA here a while ago.
>>985 Politics are silly. If the controlling groups of power really had a plan for combining the world's econmies they would gladly tell us. The truth is that nobody has any idea what they are doing. Just try to look bussy and things will be allright.
maybe superficial thoughts about religion often seen among japanese. lots of japanese youngsters value religions as something just fishy, seeing little of what their teachings say.
That's kind of laughable. Historically, the phrase new world order originated from Woodrow Wilson's presidency. To make a summation, Wilson came into WW1 after everyone was already weakened so that he could claim victory for the U.S. and have significant influence on the world changing peace treaty which would come after afterward.
>>981 But remember, she was still completely unknown between the time the segment was filmed, and the time it was aired on television. She was on the first segment of the series, a month ago, so has had a lot of time to thrive in the publicity.
