Hi there, sorry to interrupt, but I have a question for native English speakers here.

I wonder what exactly Kyon (the male charater) says at 5:10 in the clip.
To the best of my listening ability, he says like "Am I supposed to be your spokesperson or something?".
Or do you think "Am I supposed to be her spokesperson" is correct?

The problem I have here is, I can't tell if the particle used at 5:10 is "your" or "her".
Personally, based on the context in which he replies to the girl, it seems to me
that "your" would be suitable. What do you think? I'm quite stuck now.
I'd appreciate it if you could help me with this. Thanks.

If it were her, you would have heard the 'h' a little more and the sound
at the end of be wouldn't have blended into the 'er' sound at the end of
the word so well.
From the context you can also tell. He was asking if he was supposed to be the
spokesperson for the girl that was talking to him, because she said that
she would come tell him if she had anything else she wanted to say to the new
student. As her spokesperson, he would speak for her to someone else. (as the
situation discribed) If it had been "her" it would have been a situation where he
spoke for the new student.

I help them with regular school subjects like math etc. I would say I mostly
help with math because it is usually the subject kids have problems with that
their parents don't know how to teach them. I also help adults to learn computer
skills like how to check their email, etc. The area my library is in does not have
a very large Hispanic immigrant population, so I don't usually teach English.
I have had the chance at least once to help someone with some really basic Japanese
though. I have volunteered before at my University just to chat with non-native

to the next level, which was filled with many students who had been in America all of their lives.

By the way: The teacher I observed taught both the lowest level Americans, and
the new foreigners English. She came to America when she was 16 not knowing ANY
English. Now she teaches it. She's still learning a bit, but she is a very good
teacher She also likes teaching adults or foreign students the best.

If students are taking my college class and still don't want to learn it isn't
my responsibility to make them. With teenagers and younger you also have a
responsibility to the parents. In a college class all I can do is remind them
that they have something do or tell them that their grades are going to be low.
If they act up in class I can mark down their grades for participation. It's
all on them to behave.

I have to say I would prefer to teach lower levels rather than just writing
courses. In some ways it is easier but other ways harder. I like the idea of
the challenge to get the point across to speakers who don't know enough English

or draw things to get the point across perhaps, maybe even try using some of
their native language if I know it, but I'll have fun with it.

Astrophysics is really interesting discipline, isn't it?
Honestly, I didn't find math, which I majored in in University, very interesting.
I do think math is kind of beautiful though.
That's one of the biggest reason why I changed my major to computer science when I went to grad school.

No worries. You'll be learning more fun stuff, I think.

I love computers, but its best to have both short term and long term goals. You know what I mean? I like computers now, but I'll probably live a happy life in astronomy.

Yeah. That's facinating stuff. Also, contributing to human understanding is really interesting.
I think that's why I went to grad school and ended up being a postdoc in university.

By the way, computer science isn't engeneering. It does ncrease human understanding. Cognitive science and linguistics, for example, are using computer science to understand human mind and the way we understand/acquire/form language, respectively.
There are plenty of more examples where you find computer science is playing importatn roles.

Of course, I can translate it word-for-word, but it sounds too literal and unnatural.
We imply that without explicitly saying it. Sometimes native Japanese speakers say literally "don't quote me,"
but it is because they need to put a special emphasis on it.

I often hear Americans say, "don't quote me," but you rarely hear that kind of thing in Japanese.
We express the sense entirely different way. In fact, a normal translation of "I heard he was in the hospital" already contains the sense of "don't quote me," e.g., "聞いた話なんだけど、彼は入院してるそうです。"

No words like "quote" or "me" in the traslation, but it carries the sense.
Contrary, if you say, "彼は入院していると聞きました," this may not contain the sense of "don't quote me."
It just mean "I heard he was in the hospital" and probably this is the translation you learn at school.

I have a rather large ego, so I'm not sure I'm the right person to answer this, but I feel great about it.
I've thought to myself before "What if I were born somewhere else? I am very lucky to have been born into America, life is very easy for me."
However, I think the rest of America takes it for granted - wouldn't this explain why Americans so rarely learn a second language?
So though we are lucky, and though I am grateful, I don't think the general public in America notices how lucky they are.

Chrome is FAST as hell. I setted this as the default browser.
I strongly recommend Chrome if you just want to browse websites. otherwise, it's not that attractive.
There is not much customisable thing. It's just a simple browser. Personally, I really like it.

As a kid, I took this for granted, as most Americans do.

Over time though, I learned about Japan culture through movies, history, and anime... it might all be wrong, but I find Japan and it's language interesting and cool, otherwise I wouldn't be on here right now.
But I'm not so quick to jump to conclusions, I like to find out things firsthand before I become a 'fanboy' of something.

One day I thought "My computer is slow, and people say building one is cheaper more fun, I should do this!"
So I started reading review sites like anandtech.com, tomshardware.com, and fudzilla.com until I got the idea of how things worked.
I've only known about computers for about 3 years now, but now I know my way around any current computer, much of what software is good or not, and a fair bit of Linux. I even know pointless things, like what is in a game system.
There is SO much to know, and the only reason I know all of it is because I'm addicted to computers. I always want to know more, and be up to date every day.
I currently go on 4chan's technology board to argue about these things, but I wouldn't recommend going there until you know a lot of stuff, because people like to be mean to newcomers.

So if you really want to know about computers, just learn as you go! Read some review sites and ask some questions to people who are nice!

It's unfortunate that I don't know so much about more popular things, like cars... but I'm slowly learning about those too.

It's completely unique. There is a certain way of behaving when in 4chan that makes it entertaining.
If a person can't follow along like that, they usually don't have a good time as people tend to be too mean.
You have to think of it as a secret club, where you can say what you want to others, but not feel bad about it because people don't know each other.
It gets rid of stress and is a good way to take out anger... but I suppose it isn't for everyone.
One word of advice though - If you ever visit 4chan again, don't go to the "/b/ - random" board. It is filled with idiots, and it isn't even entertaining.
When I'm there, I post as Captain Spicard, so that people recognize me as I visit every day for many hours.
Some people hate me for my opinions when I am there, and other people agree with me, but the point is to not take things personally.

/b/ has more native English speakers than other boards so I'd say it may be good to go there to learn how idiots speak English.

Harder said than done. My mother told me as a kid that she would take me to any religious place of worship and teach me whatever religion, but that otherwise she would let me decide on my own.
In this way I may infact be brainwashed to be non-religious!
I try to keep open to the fact that I may be the one who is wrong, instead of the others, but I believe that most of this whole religion thing is just too outdated to be taken seriously
The only religions that still hold value are the more philosophy/spiritual based ones, as eastern religions are. I think this because there is always something to be gained from them, be it ideas or relaxation for the mind.
This is why I've been considering Taoism as of late, and would also like to visit a Shinto shrine at least once.

Whether or not we are correct, it's good to be able to think about these things logically, don't you think?

but line between the two have become blurred since after the Cold War.

Not long ago I went to a very popular church in this new town I have
moved too for university... it is so popular they even broadcast it on TV.
This was one of those evangelical churches. The music they played before
the sermon was amazing. They had professional singers and musicians... practically
a full orchestra, but the sermon was so absurd. But... I'm not a religious person.

I know what you are saying about the churches. They really take control of people's lives sometimes. Evangelical churches are the worst. What god would set such strict guidelines as they seem to follow? It's irrational.
My roommate is some kind of evangelical/bourne again. He is very nice to all of us, but he rarely talks to us.

But パラパラ is supposed to be ペラペラ, meaning "fluent".
And yes, as you corrected yourself, 惜しい is supposed to be 欲しい。
(note: 惜しい means "close/almost")

I'd say 分からない in the context, instead of 知らない.
知る is often used to mean "you have the knowlege on something"
分かる is used to mean "you can tell if...."
So it's preferable to use 分からない, because the point you wanted to make is,
when you talk on the phone with a Japanese, he/she can't tell if you are Japanese or not.

These are not errors (except for パラパラ) per se, but the sentence sounds natural this way.

then I'd say

Also, ほしかった is the correct way to say "wanted" in Japanese and "correction" is 訂正（ていせい）. On a side note, 何と is pronounced なんと in this usage.

もう、isn't neccessary. If you want to put it there, it'd be better to also put ほんとうに
so it reads もうほんとうに漢字はすごい...

I don't know if I still need to post my intent, because it seems that between you all, you got it right.
As for when I wrote "惜しいでした” that was a typo. It was meant to say "ほしいでした" even though that's wrong too - i just didn't know the proper usage.
On the line about kanji, I intended "もう”to be something like "also" but I guess it didn't come out that way.
I tried not to let my computer auto-convert any kanji that I don't know myself.
I sometimes have difficulty deciding when to use "しります" or "わかります" so it's good to get a little explanation on that too.
I was particularly uncertain about the last line. I wasn't sure it would work to connect the verbs "talking" and hte other person "understanding" the way I did with て form.
I guess that was okay though, since it wasn't something you guys (specifically) mentioned.

Again, thanks you all for poking at my Japanese to help me. Please feel free to correct any other posts I happen to make in Japanese as well. I do them occasionally.

Below English composition and sentenses are one which I wrote at the test the other day.
Words which are put in parenthesis are check by a maker and seemt to be wrong.
However, I don't know why they are wrong!

We all know about what happened to the self-proclamed son of God to some extent, and kind of celebrate the day,

The majority of us don't believe it, but respect part of their teaching/docrines/dogmas/whatever.
Christmas has very little to do with religion.

I haven't studied any kanji in a long time, but I think you'll have to
resort to rote memorization for a lot of them.
What I would do is write them on index cards, with the kun reading on the back.
For remembering the on readings, it's easier to do with words made from kanji compounds.
Then I would look at the kanji, and try to write down the correct reading. I think
that writing it out helps you to better remember it. I would also break the bunch down into groups of
10-15 to study at a time. Go back and review older ones, to make sure you don't forget them.
Also, mix up the groups, so you have a few easy, a few hard ones in each group.
If you already know a third of them, you are well on your way to mastering the whole list.

Well, it was either that or Muzou. I liked the sound of Takekura better.

That is a lot of Kanji to learn I really recommend using a method where you
use the drawn elements of the kanji, to create a meaningful picture in your
head for the meaning of the kanji. I did that for many kanji this year and
it really helps with memorization and recognition. If you suck at thinking
of meaningful drawings on your own there is a book called Kanji Pict-o-graphix
that has ideas for remembering over 1000 kanji with pictures. What I'm talking
about is remembering kanji like kuro.. black.. 黒 I think of it as fire
underneath a field. If a field catches fire it will turn all black with char.
You can learn kanji quicker than rote memorization if you can find a good
story/picture to learn it with.

There are a whole lot more functions. On top of that, there are some plug-ins too to extend its functions.
You can develop your own plug ins too.

I'm not sure there are an English manual, but the menus and such are all English if you're running it on an English mac.
It's just a browser, so probably you don't have much trouble using it, even though it's coded by a Japanese.

Chrome is fast. But there's one thing I don't like about it.
If you use IE, you can right click on the scrole bar on the right
and select up or down then you can go straight to the top or bottom
page, but when you use chrome, there' s no such function. I know
if you press "Home" button the top of a page are displayed and "End" button to
display the bottom of a page. But I'd like to do it with a mouse as
I can do with IE. Any idea?

This is for when you forget your password to log in.
When you for get your password, niconico needs to identify your ID.
Making the question and answer when you make your account works becasue
when you forget the pass word, they ask you the question and all you have to
do is to answer the question. Then they can tell you are a user who
have made niconico account before and tell you your password or
give you a new pass word.

It says in Japanese in fine print that it doesn't matter if it is wirtten
in 全角 or 半角 so probaly, writing the question and answer is OK.
