>>16 Are you a native speaker? Is "most goodest state" gramatticaly false? not false but not official? "the best state " is more appropriate?
how about "the beautifulest woman"
i think "the most beautiful woman" connotes that she may be the number one in apperance but not necesarilly so. If ways of expression like "beautifulest" is possible, we can express the meaning of she being the numeber one.
>>32 I think s/he is just trying to be a clown. I bet he's waiting for someone to say "Hey, you idiot! You dunno the basic rule of English?!" Such a kid.
I have a Japanese question! It's probably elementary, but...
I was thinking of a phrase this morning: " Sleep is the cousin of Death" And was wondering, are these the correct ways of saying it? ねる は 死ぬ の いとこ 死ぬ の いとこ、 ねる は
It feels strange using a verb as a noun though... Sorry for the stupid question.
Sleep is the cousin of Death first of all,i don't know this proverb. i don't know the meaning.
direct translation of the prover can be 寝るの(事)は死の従兄弟(いとこ) by adding "の" or "事" after verbs, they become nouns. we always use "の" with particles like の or が which add the meaning of the Subject. 寝る の は. 寝るの itself means nothing.
we can use single noun which means sleep,睡眠(SUIMINN) 睡眠 は 死の いとこ
Thank you! I should have known about using "事"... I guess I forgot.
Are you asking which is better to use? Black or Ebony? Black is deffinatly more common. But if you use Ebony, people will know that you mean black. I t just sounds more poetic to use Ebony, since it's a black type of rock. xD
You should save the word 'Ebony' for when you are complimenting something. Like Ebony hair, Ebony eyes, ect.
>>42 It's pretty hard! But just by listening to other people speak Japanese, I can kind of figure out where to use them based on hearing it out of habit. My teacher tried to help, saying that が is usually used for introducing new information to someone, but I don't think this is a fair explanation...
I happened to know on the internet. If you don't know still, the main stream media don't want to report this news for some reason.
Even japanese like me know the case of Duke lacrosse players raping a black woman. It turned out to be a false charge. She is a stripper and she probably lied for money. From the start,Suspects denied the charge. there was no hard evidence. but the main stream media reported the case intently across the nation
Two people were actually killed in the most atrocious way we can hardly imagine. Police arrested suspects. Media ignore the case or underestimate the case as much as they can.
I'm not sure why they wouldn't report something like the murders, while they report a false rape charge...
I can only assume that the media would think people would pay more attention to a controversy, instead of an actual murder that has since been solved. But I don't know...there could be a number of reasons, of which we observers don't know about. We have no idea what goes on behind the scenes of news broadcasts.
"Despite the horrific nature of these murders, they received virtually no coverage in the mainstream media outside of the Knoxville area in which they occurred. Some observers, including country musician Charlie Daniels and conservative commentator Michelle Malkin, have said that this is due to a media bias that provides more coverage to crimes perpetrated by whites against black victims, such as the false allegations of rape against the Duke Lacrosse players."
pretty much because country musicians don't wanna admit that they suck so bad they are out of the main stream now, but believe that's due to a media bias.
I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish...
Except one. An inch. It is small and fragile and it's the only thing in the world that's worth having. We must never lose it or sell it or give it away. We must never let them take it from us.
I don't know who you are but I hope you escape this place. I hope that the world turns and things get better and that one day people have roses again.
I don't know who you are but I love you. I love you.
exactly. there are way too many radio stations that play only country music but they don't call it 'media bias', which bores so many ppl to death on a daily basis.
Do Japanese have to do 漢文訓読 in school? I don't understand how it works exactly. Who is the one who puts in the 返り点? Do you do it yourselves or is it given to you?
>>58 We do. You follow kanji in a different order, in accordance with 返り点. Even though it's traslated in 訓読, it's still archaic Japanese. So, you need to be familiar with 古文. 返り点 is printed on the text book. If you can put them in yourself, that means you can read Chinise.
>>62 I did figure some grammar like verbs come before objects. Actually, I remember questions like putting a couple of given 返り点 to make sense in a very simple sentence. I might be wrong. Could be a multple choice or something.
>>63 Really? The reason I wanted to know is that when I look at things written in classical Chinese, I know many of the characters, but I can't tell what they mean at all because I don't know the sentence order. I was wondering how hard Chinese grammar was. I've heard that it isn't very complicated.
>>64 I forgot most of it now, so I can't tell what a sentence means. But if I can tell 80% of kanji there, I might be able to guess what it could be talking about. But nothing reliable. According to a Chinese friend, the sentence oder of Chinese is pretty close to that of English. So he's learned English very quickly.
>>72 Which country are you from? If you are from the UK, too bad, Terry Gilliam, who made all those Python cartoons is from the US, and if you are from the US, too bad, Monty Python is based in the UK. If you are from other countries, fuck you!!
>>88 Do what I did. Drown your sorrows in computer games, or whatever takes your fancy. Eventually you'll meet someone or a group of people, on the internet or at some place like a university club or something with the same interests. Even if you don't meet anybody, the fact that you have something to live form, regardless of what others think of you because of it, makes things easier.
People are too critical of hobbies. Everyone has a hobby or obsession of some sort. Sorry to sound nihilistic, but if you're not particularly interested or motivated by something, life is pretty pointless.
>>88 Just kill yourself, what are you waiting for? In this world "sink or swim". If you can't swim, then fucking sink. You are the weak member of society that holds us back from reaching greatness.
>>91 Only people with nothing else to live do everything they're told to and want to do nothing but follow laws and do whatever society tells them to. Whenever someone says they are contributing to society, it just means no one cares about what they are doing, or they have no friends.
>>99 Are you gonna write a suicide note? People should tell jokes in suicide notes. They're too sappy otherwise. Like if you hung yourself, write "I don't like it here, but I think I'll hang around for a bit longer" lolololol
>>91 You don't know about society at all. If you collected ten mans who says," I'm the strongest of all people."and and made a society consists of them, about two out of them would become ,what you call,"the weak"s. That means there is a possibility almost everyone,of course including you, will become the "weak". So first of all, you should learn "the theory of "thhe weak",otherwise you won't survive.
In June my friend will marry Malaysian man. So I will go to Malaysia to attend her wedding ceremony. And then I want to give bride and groom congratulatory address. Do you know nice compliments in English?
Ahahah, Senator Mccain sucks so much. I hope he doesn't! None of the candidates are really appealing, but hey, it's America. (What else can you expect from us other than ignorance? Haha)
Ahh! I still think it is rude though. I just turned 15 a little while ago. Does peropero mean lick? I looked up peropero, and found peropero candies "Peropero candies" literally means "candies that you can lick".
Japanese boys to be honest. Ahahaa, not just that. They are very polite which is a quality I like very much. I'm interested in every type of culture though; not just Japan's.

>>266 I don't know what happened on November 5th, but I suspected something historical happened on that day. I thought it was a phrase from a book or a phrase of famous person.
I thouhgt, remember and November rhymes, but September, Ocotber and December rhyme with remember, too so it doesn't have to be November if rhyming is the effect they expect...
>>272 You are correct, it is an historical event. But also it was used in a recent movie. My experiment was to see if the movie was recognised first, or the event. If nobody gets it by noon my time tomorrow, I'll go ahead and explain both of them.
>>273 To think you are British, I thought the phrase is from the movie about Queen Elizabeth where the actor who played the Queen won the Oscar. Probably I am wrong.

>>314 Oh really? lol how old? And if you want, you can give me your "real" email address in the message responding to mine if there is too much spam on the one you gave me.
Magibon is a fairly cute American girl who entertains people with a series of self-promotional video on YouTube. Speaks some Japanese. Quite popular in 2ch and drops in here every once in a while. Search her name on YouTube. You'll find her vid.
>>321 She youtubes. First she was uploading her videos there without Japanese audience in sight. Then for some reason Japanese audience found out that she likes Japanese pop culture, drama, music and such. Then Japanese youtubers sent her message inviting her to 2 channel's thread made for her in youtube watching board. She began interacting with Japanese there. Then she was advised to make her own blog and she did.
She understands a little bit of Japanese but she counts heavily on translation software, writing and reading Japanese. You can see how she looks in her blog.
>>330 I think it's just that they like japan and things Japanese. They are influenced by Japanese drama, the way Japanese girl act and speak and all. They like it when they act, speak like Japanese. That's all, I guess.
>>331 I like anime, and if I were to learn Japanese I wouldn't talk like an anime character because of it's "influence" it has on me. People are so willing to fit into stereotypes of what is attractive to a certain demographic, which I think is pretty ignorant.
Just because you are interested in something, doesn't mean you should dedicate your mannerisms to that hobby.
Do you know what I mean? In general it scares me that people are so impressionable.
>>332 I think I know what you mean, but if you ask me, I would say you think that too seriously.
Kerorin and applemilk act and speak like Japanese but that's only when they are talking in Japanese, which means when they have Japanese people in mind. Isn't that natural when giving messages to Japanese people? They are defferent when they are speaking in English.
If American kids like Britney Spears or whatever, they try to dress like her, right? If you adore someone you want to be like it, in their cases, they are into Japanese culture and they want to be part of it, at least when they speak in Japanese.
>>333 They think the way they act and speak that way is cute. But remember not all Japanese girls act and talk that way. Some girls don't like it as you pointed out, either.
>>334 I understand, but what I'm saying is that I don't like it when people try to imitate others. It's unavoidable though; we are all influenced by each other.
I wanted to be a spiderman and tried jumping from one building to another and ended up breaking bones. I decided not to be influenced by comic books since then. :p
How can I watch kerorin's vids? Can't find any on YouTube.
To me, Applemilk sounds pretty intelligent in English, but not to the degree that she could sound condescending. Seems like she's a bad actor, tho. She sounds very sincere in Japanese, which I like most about her. Doesn't speak like a anime character. So fluent in Japanese. I would say, her Japanese is even beautiful. She looks just ok to me tho. lol
I like this girl alot! She is funny. I bet I would get the same impression when she speaks English. Pretty laidback and not phony at all. Very natural Japanese. I wonder if she lived in Japan for long. She could make a good comedian in Japan. lol
>>340 Thank you, sir. your explanation is very understandable and you have a good command of English for a Japanese (?). By the way,I learned the word "condescending" from Norah today but it seems to be a very dangerous word because it has the opposite meanings.
>>346 He is amazing. I know one performance group who are on tour showing their physical ability like that. They seem to know how to release shock to their knees. French rap is cool, too.
>>343 Demographics are often based on age, but they can be based on other things too. For example, it is very common for demographics to be separated by sex as well. Other common factors are race and economic class.
>>349 Maybe we are talking about the same group. I remember watching them on morning TV show here in Japan introducing they would do their production or something in Japan.
>>351 maybe... by the way, you seem to like france. well at least french raps. do you know much about how the french presidential election was broadcast in japan?
>>352 It's not that I particularly like France but that French rap is kind of new to my ears and sounds good and fresh to me. I haven't had opprtunities to listen to French rap. You are from France I take it?
Yeah. News about the French presidential election was aired some time ago in Japanese media. As far as I remember, president wasn't decided because none of the candidates gained more than 50% of vote, right? And then vote was done again between the male candidate and the female candidate. Then the male candidate won.
I heard he doesn't like sumo, saying just fat guys are wrestling or something like that. He is right wing and doesn't agree with the idea of accepting immigrants and has a tough stance against immigrants in France.
I know some French people really like Japanese anime and something like Japanese festival where anime lovers gather were held in a venue and enjoyed Japanese anime and pop culture. Many Japanese like France and France is very popular as a tourist destination. And French brand name products attract lots of young Japanese women.
>>353 well, there is always a second round for a french presidential election. but anyway, yeah sarkozy won the election. he is short and easy to be caricatured, like a barking dog. anyway, students don't really like them because he wants to make france a police state.
Seems like stepping on a dog's dropping and a part of the dog's poo are glued to grooves of shoes cause much trouble in France. You need to wash it with more care with runnig water.
>>274 That is exactly the point of my experiment, thank you! The rhyme was used in the movie 'V for Vendetta', yes, but it first came about in the 17th Century, when a man named Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament during an assembly with the king. However, the plot was discovered, and he was arrested before he could ignite the basement full of explosives. This happened on November 5, 1605, and the event is celebrated as 'Bonfire Night', or 'Guy Fawkes Night' here, by burning effigies of him and setting off lots of fireworks.
"Remember, remember the fifth of November, The gunpowder, treason and plot, I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot"
I was seeing if people thought about the movie or the event first. Or were even aware of the event.
>>282 I haven't seen that movie yet, though I'm not really that interested. I think it puts Tony Blair in a better light than in reality.
>>366 Interesting. I wonder you guys celebrate it throughout UK on November 5th. I noticed there are other words that rhyme.
"Remember, remember the fifth of November, The gunpowder, treason and plot, I know of no reason why the gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot"
treason and reason, plot and forgot. And maybe ever and remember, too. I read wikipedia and found that Natalie Portman is in the movie.
I happened to read the story about the Paris syndrome, too. I first thought the article is exaggerating. I should visit Paris to see how things are in Paris with my own eyes.
>>367 Perhaps the article is a little biased, because Britain and France have had a lot of conflict throughout their histories. Britain is known for disliking France and France generally hates Britain. In a European poll, France was widely regarded throughout Europe as having the rudest people. But I can't really say, because I have only driven through there without having stopped.
As for your observation of the rhymes throughout that verse, you are correct. However, on the matter of 'ever' and 'remember', I think they would rhyme if a normal Japanese person said them out aloud, but in English, the 'v' is a much softer sound than the 'b' so we do not regard it as such.
>>168 Yeah. I do like her. The first time I saw her in a movie was when she was in Leon, where main character is played by Jan Reno, French actor. I just thought that the girl acts very well. Next time I saw her was in Star Wars episode ??? and I didn't recognize she was the girl in Leon and was very surprised she grew up to be a beautiful girl. She was in Japanese shampoo commercial like many Hollywood movie stars do as moonlighting.
She has looks and brain. She graduated from Harvard if I am not wrong. I wonder if she entered the prestageous university like other students do or she got a special advantage given by the uni.
>>370 Jean Reno is one of my favourite actors, and he was fantastic in Leon. However, though he was good in the Hollywood remake of 'Godzilla', the movie was otherwise terrible.
I can't really remember many other movies she was in, other than Leon and the new Star Wars prequels, but also was surprised to see her after a few years. As for her attendance at Harvard, she was there based on qualifications, I believe, and graduated with a degree in psychology.
I didn't realise many Hollywood actors did commercials over there.
but you know psychology is a doss subject. doesn't matter whether she gets the degree from harvard or not. it is still a lame subject, not at all useful in real life.
>>373 Some people make a lot of money from things that are completely useless in real life. Look at Scientology for example. They use a lot of psychology in order to brainwash people to give them money. A lot of psychologists are given funding to carry out really stupid and useless experiments, such as seeing how to traumatise a child.
Even my business and management education involves psychology to a degree, to try and understand the needs and workings of your subordinates as well as your clients.
yeah, and we scientists get less fundings. not only that, it ends up closing down physical science departments around the uk. that's annoying. have you read a recent article in Guardian on this subject? i think it was about Kroto commenting on the way science is underfunded in britain.
The mediocre tend to believe that they are underappreciated in their fields despite the fact that only the genius innovators can make the best use out of limited resouces to break the ground. Simply put, because they waste money.
Actors from UK such as Sean Connery, Ewan Macgragor and musicians Ringo Starr, Rod Stewart Sean Lennon, Jamiroquai and football players Beckham made appearnace on Japanese TV CMs. And American actors such as Natalie Portman's CM can be seen on the website. Kate Winslet also was on a CM for shampoo but her clip is not on the website.
Excerpts from NY times.
“The days of Brad Pitt doing a commercial in Japan that he thought no one was going to see are gone.” As recently as 2000, it was common for celebrities to negotiate contracts that kept commercials they made out of view in the United States. Many celebrities saw the TV spots as potentially harmful to their reputations back home, much the way Bill Murray’s character in “Lost in Translation” avoided making domestic ads. Widespread Internet access, however, has made it hard to limit ads to one country, and dozens of foreign commercials starring actors like Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Clooney and Jennifer Aniston have found their way online in recent years.
Japanese Riyo Mori won the Miss universe following the second place of Kurara Chibana last year.
I know Miss universe is not decided based only on looks. But I would say her looks is not so good. Her figure? I think it's just average among contestants. I wonder why she could won the title.
I think in Japanese aethtetic standards, her face is not beautiful nor cute. I guess her looks appealed to judges overseas. Oriental beauty or something like that? Still, I don't get it. What do you think? By the way, I am Japanese.
>>410 Thank you very much for that, I had no idea any of these existed!
It is very unusual over here for celebrities to be used in advertising on television. The only exception I can think of recently is David Hasselhoff being used in an Internet Service Provider commercial.
Michael J Fox's CM made me cringe... it was very bad, and Harrison Ford's was very unexpected. I have seen many of the people mentioned on Japanese talk shows, so I guess 'Lost in Translation' wasn't far off from what happens while they are over there. I find it quite uncomfortable seeing them play along with the show without actually knowing what's going on though, such as when David Beckham was on a food show with Utada Hikaru and TUNNELS.
Haha, just watched the Ringo Starr one, and the play on words with his name was terrible, but made me laugh! The Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) CM was done rather well.
Wow, so you Martin intend to get a job in US , right? In that case how does it be about VISA or passport. Would you get a long term VISA or something like that?
Is it common that Indonesian elites go abroad for advanced education like you? If so, US is the most popular place to study? < yes, many indonesian going to US or Australia to study abroad>
Wow, so you Martin intend to get a job in US , right? <yep>
In that case how does it be about VISA or passport. Would you get a long term VISA or something like that? < if i get a job i could get a working visa, and after that green card. but i have to graduate first>
Did you enjoy your memorial day weekend? <yes, really much, i went to Austin(about 2 hours) yesterday.>
>>454 Thank you for having a little chat with me,Martin. Thanks to you, I gained a bit confidence of talking in English. My nick name is micchan. I often come here to study English by watching different types of English. So,when I get a chance to talk to you again,It'll be my plesure. But I learned one thing that is very important from a conversation with you. That is, you can't keep on talking forever here because of 投稿規制(toko kisei).lol I don't know how you say 投稿規制 in English though. See you again!
>>421 Some of the CMs that website has are from 90s so they might look old and less sophisticated besides bad qualities they originally have as a CM. The impression I had when I saw Ringo Starr CM for the first time back then is "OHHHHH the pun is something even kids can come up with.. Too rediculous...To make use of the pun they asked Ringo Starr to make appearnace on it????"
His Last name is used as a pun , too in the CM just in case you didn't notice. Starr sounds a bit like 擦った(すった), past form of 擦る(する), which means "grate."(in this CM's case, grate apples) It's apple bevearage and they grated apples to make the product.
You watched David Beckham when he was on Tunnels show with Utada Hikaru! I did, too. Actually, that's not a food show. That's a popular "segment" of the Tunnels show. Segment may not be the right word because it occupies more than half of the show. When a special big guest comes to the program, they spend the whole show for the segment.
Maybe you recognized the pun and know about the Tunnels show, but I tried writing additional info above. Anyway you know a lot about Japanese TV shows. I know what the movie, Lost in translation is about but haven't watch it. I think I should watch it.
>>457 Thank you for the extra information! I did not catch the pun about grating in Ringo Starr's CM. And you're right about the pun on Ringo - it was stupid, but stupid in a way that made me laugh. It works well with British humour because, for some reason, we just find silly things really funny, which is why we like things such as Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, BlackAdder, etc. It's a little bit immature, I know, but we don't really mind as long as we can laugh at it.
I didn't realise that was just a segment of Tunnels' show, since it lasted so long, but that's good to know also, thank you. I enjoyed when they used to do spoofs of other television shows and movies, or even promotional music videos.
Oh well, because you gave me a lot to watch, I'll return the favour: ttp://www.tv-links.co.uk/show.do/1/73 This website has a lot of shows on it and might be interesting to people learning English. Some are old, some are very new, but the one directly given above is one of my favourites from the early 90's.
>>459 You seem to know a lot about Japanese TV shows to the extent you can be a commentator of them. You must have watched the drama 電車男, or train man. The actor who were in the leading role was on of of the Tunnels's spoofs when he was a little kid. ttp://blogimg.goo.ne.jp/user_image/66/eb/e20a03cd5f1e87d4c1fb6858a7133cb3.jpg
And thanks for the link. Red Dwarf. I felt familiar when I watched one of the videos you linked to. I searched and found out that it was aired on NHK before. That's why I felt familiar. I think I have watched it on NHK before at night. It was funny. I found that there is even a Japanese fan's website of the comedy.
I read somewhere that BBC announced they make all of their archives available on the Internet in the future. It's not easy for me to understand dramas, comedies in English but I thought it's a great project.
>>462 i don't think that's going to happen. BBC is not that generous. hit comedies like red dwarf, black adder etc etc are still very expensive to get on dvd. by the way, i love part troll by bill bailey. you can see some clips on youtube.
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP; I AM NOT THERE, I DO NOT SLEEP. I AM A THOUSAND WINDS THAT BLOW. I AM THE DIAMOND GLINTS ON SNOW. I AM THE SUNLIGHT ON RIPENED GRAIN. I AM THE GENTLE AUTUMN'S RAIN.
WHEN YOU AWAKEN IN THE MORNING'S HUSH, I AM THE SWIFT UPLIFTING RUSH OF QUIET BIRDS IN CIRCLED FLIGHT. I AM THE SOFT STARS THAT SHINE AT NIGHT
DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND CRY; I AM NOT THERE, I DID NOT DIE.
>>462 You're right, I have seen 電車男, but still had no idea that he was that child in that parody sketch! He had bushy eyebrows! I'm quite surprised that a British comedy show was aired over there though! As I mentioned last thread, the only show of yours we got was 風雲!たけし城, as well as clips from other shows on this programme showing TV from around the world. It's a shame, because I find that British and Japanese humour can be quite similar sometimes.
Thanks for the compliment too, but there is still a lot I haven't seen.
Unfortunately, >>466 is correct, and Greg Dyke has since resigned as Director General of the BBC, so I'm not sure about the status of that project.
>>463 Ah, I'm very surprised you've heard of Bill Bailey! Part Troll was one of his live stand-up comedy performances. He also appears on many comedy quiz shows, such as the music show 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks': ttp://youtube.com/watch?v=POKeGdqNOJQ or 'QI', a quiz show mainly about English language: ttp://youtube.com/watch?v=K6wNWeGM3nA
>>463>>467 I see. Then the chances are the project has disappeared into thin air.
>>467 Was 風雲!たけし城 aired on BBC or on another private TV station? I watched Dragon ball on the website you linked to above. The voice of English version Goku is a little bit husky but not far from the original Goku's voice. I thought the voice actor catches the character of Goku very well.
>>468 風雲!たけし城 was aired on a cable channel called 'Challenge', which often showed game shows, mainly physical ones. However, recently, a channel called 'ftn' (I have no idea what it stands for...) licensed it from Challenge and aired it on free digital TV. Our version is different though, and the commentary is dubbed over by Craig Charles (from Red Dwarf) and they cut out quite a few of the sketches to fit it into almost half an hour.
I don't really know much about anime or Dragon ball, but people here generally prefer to watch foreign shows in the language which they were intended, and to have subtitles instead of dubs in the language of the country showing it.
Ah, talking about dubbing and voices reminded me of another Japanese show that was aired here and was extremely popular (and still is), called 'Monkey'. I believe it was first released as 西遊記. The English language dub was produced by the BBC in 1979 and the entire series has recently appeared on DVD.
I personally prefer subtitled version to dubbed version because I can enjoy actors' voice. I think acting involves tone of voice so dubbed version decrease the pleasure of enjoying original acting.
When a Hollywood movie is in theater, there are two versions, subtitled and dubbed versions. I always watch a subtitled version.
>>472 That's the one! I have a couple questions about it though. Was it supposed to be often funny? I can't tell, because the English dub might have been modified from the original in translation. Also, was the original theme song in Japanese or English? I really enjoyed that show too.
>>473 I agree completely, the original voices usually carry the intended amount of tone and emotion, whereas dubs usually lack the character.
Over here, when foreign movies are shown in a theatre, they usually have just subtitles, but there are exceptions - such as when, for example, a new Hayao Miyazaki movie comes out, it is dubbed by 'major' actors. I wish they would release two versions like they do there.
It is a shame that foreign movies aren't more popular here, because we only get a very limited selection on DVD, usually only by a few directors. Kitano Takeshi is easy to find, and I usually enjoy his movies, but Miike Takashi is also easy to find and although I enjoy some of his movies, I cannot watch too much at once. It is strange how Fukasaku Kenta keeps getting Battle Royale 2 re-released even though he is a terrible director (Sukeban Deka remake was terrible too!). Oh! Kurosawa Akira is very widely released here, but the DVDs are usually more expensive for some reason.
>>471 Hello there. Oh, you know many Japanese Director. Then what do you say about Iwai Shunji? Did you ever seen? If not, I strongly reccomend his. He sketches something like adolescence or so, that' why over the differece of culture people would be moved, I think. His movies are worth to watch, I bet.
>>475 Hello! I have heard about Iwai Shunji - he did '四月の物語' and 'Love Letter', right? However, I have never actually seen any of his movies. Thank you very much for the recommendation though, because I always enjoy exploring new movies. They'll be impossible to find in shops here, but will search around elsewhere. They sound exactly like a type of movie I would enjoy. Thanks again.
>>474 The theme song, was that "Monkey Magic"? Then, it was all in English. Another song from that show "Gandara" has both English and Japanese version, because the band "Go-Die-Go" (a pun with an emperor's name "Godaigo") was a band with 2 Americans and 3 Japanese. Oh, they also sang the theme song for an animation series "Ginga Tetsudo 999," both in English and Japanese, and both the animation and the song are very popular.
I would like Americans in this thread to do me a favor. In a thread in English board, a Japanese high school chemistry teacher posted a message win which he said he is interested in how chemistry is taught in American high school. So he wants to get a chemistry textbook used in American high school.
Would you tell me what chemistry text book you used or using when you are a high school student? I'd appreciate it if you give me links on Amazon or textbooks publishers website. Thank you.
I'm not 472 but If I remember correctly, there is a comedy factor dotted in an episode. I mean when Goku is using his long stick, he accidentally hit himself on the head with it. Hmmm. But this has not something to do with dubbing. That's what you can tell from his action. Another thing I remeber is the pig-like man (ちょはっかい)often plays a role of laughing stock in the drama. I mean, they teased him for eating too much food and such. Well, I am in my thirties so my momery is blur and I think I watched it when I was around 10 years old so I remember I was a little scared of monsters that I appear in the drama.
I heard that Japanese people have abbreviated laughing online to "w". I think it's a good idea. That way, whenever people type in a web address, they start with "www", and know not to take the internet seriously.
>>477 Thank you! I never knew anything about the band that performed the theme song! So they kept the original theme in the dub. I have been looking for more of their songs but so far have only been able to find about eight different versions of 'Monkiey Magic'.
>>478 Always a good reason! There tends to be quite a lot of 'visual' comedy in Japanese and British shows, which makes it easy for people of any nationality to enjoy.
>>483 You are correct, I guess this ties in with my reply to >>478 as well. I think the dub stays quite true to the original script, but sometimes the way the voices are done are a little inappropriate with the scene and so makes it a little funnier than it should be. Pigsy (the pig-man's name in our version) stays true to his role as the greedy fool.
I guess at some point in everyone's childhood, they are frightened a little by some characters in some show. I don't really remember much of the shows I watched as a child, though, but I do remember having bad dreams a couple times because of the 'Care Bears'. ttp://youtube.com/watch?v=wfsrjGb7LcE Watching that again reminds me why I was a little frightened. And I don't mean of the monsters.
>>484 Is this a pen? The cat is blue. How do you do?
abandon such nasty belief!!!!!!!! god chosen people? resurrection of jew jesus christ? place of promise? the last Judgment? give me a break! you idiot!! crazy!!! it's 2007. 2007th days after jew-selfproclaimed mesia jesus christ died.
ex-boyfriend the other day. He has asked someone's help and advice, like me... Because he is really worried about his job these days. Such as he's thinking of going to quit his job and so on. To tell the truth, I broke up with him about 5 months ago. He's 5 years yonger than me. He graduated from university in Nagoya, and decided to start new job in Osaka last spring. After few months later, he got transferd to Nara. He was really busy from then on. (He is still busy now) He couldn't take a day off,and had to work overtime. So it was so hard to keep relations between him and me at that time. But we still keep in touch by e-mail once in a while.
I wish I could help his matter. But I couldn't advice to him easily... I hope to it turns out well!
I'm sorry for writing my poor English diary. Thank you for reading.
>>486 There was also a new versin (remake with different cast) of Saiyuki. The cast includes the Densha-otoko and a member of SMAP. Here is the theme song for the new version. The band is called Monkey Majik, I think it's also a mixture of Japanese and Americans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5evuGnkXqq4
Good Evening everyone. Sorry I've been so absent lately. For some reason I don't quite have anything to say. >.> Anyone have plans this weekend? I intend to study my Japanese like crazy!!
>>499 How many days do you have until you come here? Can you come to 2ch while you are in Japan? Have you hired ninja already to protect your mom and you from vicous sumurai?
>>500 >>501 Yes, it's in a couple of weeks, so I'm excited, but I'm also nervous because I get frustrated when I get my japanese messed up. u_u;
I don't think I'll come to 2ch while in Japan. I'd rather leave my laptop at home, since it's such a burden to carry when traveling.
No, I haven't hired a ninja, they are too expensive. Maybe if we wear wigs we will blend in with the natives and pass by unnoticed.>:D If worse comes to worse, Optimus Prime will save me.
In a few months I will haven't had a girlfriend for my entire life of 38 years! It's misery, inferno. But my Emma watson is the only angel who can heal my heart. I want to marry her.
What I don't know is when you say textbook, it always means textbooks used in school. I searched on the net and there seems to be a textbook for grown-ups. What he needs is a chemistry textbook that's actually used in high school.
oh that one...he was just another disturbed kid who went postal, that's all. I wouldn't think he 'died' for me, no way. besides, a martyr wouldn't go around shooting people.
really? how about adolph hitler? he killed millions of people. but he killed himself just like cho! muhammad killed tens of thousands of people, but he is great. difference is only that they were killed or not.
the number of people they killed is also differnent. the greater ,the greater they are. hummmmm. stalin and mo are the greatest. mo is not handsome. he is not great though.
>>497 Thanks very much for the links! I had completely forgotten about the ending theme for Saiyuuki and how nice it was. However, 'Galaxy Express 999' was a little bland for my tastes, but 'Holy and Bright' was also nice.
Might I ask about your taste in music?
>>498 Thank you for this information. I had no idea there was a remake of Saiyuuki, but I'm always wary of dramas with band members in because sometimes they can't really act well and are only there to attract their fans to watch the show for TV station ratings... saying that, though, I have enjoyed some shows and movies with music artists in them, such as 'Nana'. I would mention Ryoko Hirosue, but do not know if she did acting or singing first... but whichever, 'Poppoya' was a fantastic movie.
>>487, >>505 I did a search for 'Yukorin' and found some girl who talks like an annoying six year old child. What does she do and why does she speak like this? She's not as annoying as ttp://youtube.com/watch?v=eQZ0Bgv_O_4 though. Kana's 'singing' makes my ears bleed.
>>518 >why does she speak like this? why? don't you know? she is doing that somewhat intentionally. there shoule be another female talent in UK who speak childish to attract men.
>>518 i think godaigo is one of the few japanese bands that is acceptable by westerm rock standard. their melody, their english level, their manners, etc.
>>518 As far as I know, Yukorin is popular among Japanese Otaku and men who is kind of like lolicon. As you recognize, she talks like a kid although she is over 20 years old. As someone pointed out above, she plays her character and makes her voice to sound like a innocent girl and that's what appeals to Otaku and lolicon guys.
Her face is cute and plus her voice and she says she is from Colin planet. It is of course a imaginary planet that even appeals to her fans. While she tries to be pure and innocent throughout her carrer, Media reported that she goes out with a Japanese comedian and that made commotion of her fans because she is believed to be vergin among fans but there's a possibility that she is not. Her fans feel kind of betrayed by her. Verginity is very important for Otaku because it's a symbol of pureness.
She has released CDs and she has been on some CMs, on drama (not many I guess she is a bad actor.) and TV vaiety shows. Her photo book is very popular among otaku although her boobs are not big at all.
I don't think she would get a fan base among western countries where mature and sexy woman is considered to be attractive. Yukorin is on the opposite end compared to the Japanese woman who won Miss Universe this year.
>>532 Sorry, is it bad that native speakers sometimes come here? Though it may be embarrassing for some non-native people to post English here, it should not really matter - we *do not* laugh at peoples' mistakes. If anything, we can try and help if anyone has a question about grammar or even just meanings. It also gives a chance to practice English in a typical method of conversation.
>>519 Ah, now I'm starting to understand a little, I think. I wasn't really aware that some people found a childish manner of speaking attractive. It's very different in the UK - girls try to sound more mature than they are in order to try and attract men.
>>521 Again, as above, it's been a bit confusing. This area of culture is very different to ours. I think if we had such things as photobooks in the UK, many feminist groups would protest and complain.
It's difficult to say what is preferred in the West - it seems quite evenly split between people who like 'cute' and those who prefer 'sexy'. From the 80's to the mid 90's, there seemed to have been an image of the 'perfect woman', which is when supermodels became very popular, but those days are over now. Personally, I find women who are my height or taller a little creepy...
>>520 You are right - their style is similar to many western bands from the 70's. These days, however, it seems that a lot of Japanese bands have a western style of rock, but the only reason they are not commonly listened to in the west is because of a language barrier. One group, however, really stands out to me with its similarity to European rock, and that is 403 (ttp://www.gun149.com/~nekonyan/ - I believe they did the music used in 'Nightmare City' flash animation), who reminds me strongly of an Italian group called 'Rhapsody'. I do not really wish for Japanese bands to try and become more western in style. It is the difference which interests me, which is why I do not really enjoy R&B, hip-hop or rap in almost any language.
>>534 Let me try translating what >>532 is saying. "If you are not a native English speaker, write "non-native" in a blank where you are supposed to write your name because you non-native speakers are annoying. Non-native speakers' English should be so bad that I can't learn from their English and their posts are diturbing."
He is Japanese like me and he can't tell which post is from a native speaker and which is not. So he is kind of nervous about acquiring bad English by reading non-native's English without knowing it is non-native's English. He just wants to read native speakers' natural English. So don't worry. It's not that he doesn't want native English speakers to come here.
>>536 Ohh, I see. Thanks very much for clearing this up for me. My Japanese is still really quite poor and I guess I had a bit of trouble with some words.
>>532 I'm sorry if what I said was a bit harsh - I didn't understand completely. Haha, I'm a learner too, just of a different language.
>>524 I'm not Otaku. ^_^ I just wrote what I know about Yukorin and Otaku.
>>535 Yeah. There sure were super model craze back then. I read somewhere that too skinny models are banned for some fashion shows because they can give wrong messages to girls that the skinner, the better. It's terrible for girls to have eating disorder.
I'm not 520 but checked the website you linked. I found out that 403 is not a band. He says there are some people who help him make his tunes but they are not band members. 403 is solo. He is a university student. He has talents not only in music but in gymnastic and all.
>>503 haha! isn't 'Billy the Kid' the Brad Pitt look-alike from a cooking anime? I'm only vaguely familiar with it.
>>510 I'm in California. >>528 Nope, I'm not in San Diego. Although I've been there a few times. I went on the 80year-old rollercoaster and thought I was going to fly out... >__>;;
>>518 Wow...Kana. I haven't heard of her in quite a long time. Many people say they hate her singing, but I think it's rather unique and it depends on the person. Just like how some people like Melt Banana, even though they are considered "Noise/Rock". sometimes the singing doesn't matter too much.
>>545 Oh yes fashion magazines get complaints when they have girls that are too skinny in their advertisements. In the 90's, there was a slang for this style, called "Heroin Chic" Since the girls were really skinny and emanciated with dark makeup on their eyes, people said it looked like they were on drugs (like heroin) and it was a bad influence for young women.
>>556 Noooooooooooooooo. He is not a charcter of TV drama! He exsited in real life. But I guess there were some dramas based on his life cause he is a legendary outlaw gunman. ttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_the_Kid
The point is he would be the man who can save you from Samurai attack.
Why girl idols and models quite often betray her fans like us? They marry rich businessman, professional sportsman, or a poor but handsome musician?( except Yukorin, she sexed with a foolish comedian) I wish Nishiyama Maki not betray me, and marry me.
>>545 Haha, I was a bit suspicious because of the website having pictures of the same person, so thanks for confirming it. He must be quite skilled with instruments and editing, too, to be able to mix everything into a complete and decent sounding song.
>>545, >>555 There's been quite a bit of media coverage over here about the state of models, after a girl (also a model) died trying to become thinner. I'd heard about the fashion shows in Madrid and Milan, and their ban on any model under the BMI (body-mass index) of 18 (18.5 is the lower limit for normal weight/mass).
>>555 That's true - 'each to their own'. I'm sure if I made a peanutbutter, anchovy and durian pie, there'd be at least a few people in the world who would enjoy it... Guess I'm just not really into it because the whole pretending to be a little girl thing doesn't appeal to me - though I do like old fashioned clothing and especially hats!
>>557 I'm sorry, but the 'otaku' in my country do not agree with you. They say that the Samurai would just use their swords to cut the bullets in half. I think Darth Vader could give them a good fight, or maybe even Jesus.
>>569 Yes. He flew all the way from Korea to liberate Virginia from the rich charletans. Although he tripped over, fell on a bullet, and died. Stupid bastard.
He can fly, then. That's sweet. But, does he have like other super powers? No super strength? He died because he tripped over onto a bullet? Viginia was like attacked by the rich charletans? That's kinda lame as a plot, you know.. like kinda?
>>571 Most superhero movies and plots are pretty crap these days. Hopefully a new superhero will emerge with new superpowers. I'm still waiting for someone called the Dirty Bomber.
>>572 Ever since they raided that Gainax blog, 2channelers have taken to invaded people's blogs. I don't think that English speaking boards will join, but who can say. What are they upset about now?
>>574 'Hulk' from 2003 was on television a couple days ago, and it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Not as bad as 'Godzilla' from 1998 though.
I saw the Hollywood version of Godzilla, too. I don't remember its storyline, though. Although I knew that Hollywood Godzilla looks completely different from the original Godzilla(Japanese Godzilla) in advance, I was surprised at how it looks. I liked the theme song of Godzilla by Jamiroquai for some reason, so I bought the santra which includes the Jamiroquai's song.
I haven't seen Hulk, but I've heard that it's full of CG.
>>584 Is cricket sports for upper class? Is it only in Physical edcation's carriculum of prestagious schools? I heard that its rule is too complicated to understand well. Is that the case?
>>921 I don't know. Even if they release a new song, I don't think it sells. Maybe all they can do is to release an album which is a single collection.
>>587 Cricket is a sport for people who like to think they're upper class and think they are superior because they understand the rules. The rules don't make sense though, and nobody really understands them. Anyone who says they do is a liar.
However, cricket is also what baseball was derived from, after rounders.
It's not just in the curriculum of prestigious schools though; even mine had it.
>>597 I see. Thank you. As I heard it, it seems like its rules are hard to understand. As for the origine of baseball, there seems to be a few possibilities.
I read Guardian online and found that there's a controversy over channel4's show about Princess Diana's death. If there's something like conspiracy involved, that's horrible.
>>601 There have been rumours of conspiracy ever since the event happened, but it blew over after a while. Some people think it was orchestrated by the Royal Family or the government in order to get rid of Dodi al'Fayed, since if he and Diana married, the father-in-law of Harry and William would be Muslim. I don't really see how that would matter though, as the royal family holds no real power anymore.
I still just believe that the driver was intoxicated, and took far too careless measures in order to try and escape from the paparazzi, resulting in the accidental deaths of Diana, Dodi and the driver. But then, who really knows?
>>598 Ahhh, but can they play, or are they just making things up, since nobody could really be sure? I guess they also want money and fame.
Cricket is absolutely not known in Japan, you know. Many people don't even know cricket exists, you know. Instead baseball is quite popular in Japan. Those are the two lamest sports. you know. The Olympics commitee or something even has decided to exclude baseball for its lameness.
>>604 Sorry, the upper class thing really only applies to Britain. Fortunately for us though, you Aussies always annihilate us at it and put us back in our place. Which is also good because it means less television coverage.
>>605 I'm not surprised it's relatively unknown over there. It's one of the most boring sports known to man. As for the Olympics, people in London don't even know how to design a good logo for when the Olympics will be held there in 2012: ttp://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/606/A23431826
Some day, there are few poors in the world. But there are a lot of slaves who might be oppressed by the rotten capitalism and the globalisation made for the have and their greedy. I am to be sure about that;not wrong at all.
Anti-globalization is deeply related to regionism and thus nationalism, which is easy to attract the poor who are uncontended with the status quo. Not sure what new-liberalism is tho.
Yes, one day everyone will live like people do in Korea. We'll starve and have no freedom, but we'll be able to sing non-stop all day about how that faggot Kim Jong-Il is so great and how great it feels to get screwed over by him.
Okay, then I'll explain to you what's happening, kid. There's a free downloadable software called Google Earth, developed by Google, and it allows you to see satellite images of literally anywhere on earth; Tokyo, Paris, London, New York, Bagdhad, Jerusalem, anywhere. 619 was lamenting because somehow he couldn't download it, so I told him that there's an alternative. Get it?
Is anyone here familiar with the J-pop singer Mikami Chisako. There is a song by her that I have been searching for a long time, almost 2 years. Maybe someone here can help me?
>>631 I haven't heard her name and searched on the net, and found out that her name is 三上ちさこ if her name is written in characters used in Japan. Do you read hiragana and kanji?
I hope the song you are looking for is one of these samples. If you remember where the song was played or more information about the song you'd better tell us for better searching.
I think it has a lot to do with our reproduction. If clits didn't exist, women would hate to or be reluctant to have intercourse with men. As a result, the population of human beings would decrease to the extent that they finally die out. It's a plan of nature.
my anus bleeds when i shit how do i fix this, it's getting really annoying also, theres a big obvious peeping hole in the toilet at the station i use if i see someone peeping through the hole, can i stab his eye? do i get arrested? for stabbing a peeping homo's eye?
>>643 Probably the most popular online community in English is http://myspace.com/ There's also 4-ch.net which is an English copy of 2-ch, but only otaku hang out there. (Otaku in English has been adopted to mean someone who is obsessd with Japan especially anime and manga ;))
Just think of a topic you're interested in, go to google, and search "<the topic you're interested in> forum" or something and stuff will probably come up :).
G8 members is working harder to solve NEET problem in Germany. All leaders except Japan have the idea that NEET should be saved and given them jobs. But prime minister Abe only advocates that they should be sent off to the compulsory camp. If you were a neet, you wanna go to the camp?
>>663 Not carbon dioxide, but greenhouse gas. Don't you read newspapers? Last week, Mr. Bush, for the first time in his presidency, said that the greenhouse gas emmision must be controlled in order to prevent climate change. Bush was trying to take control over other European countries in this issue and that annoucement is the direct reason why they are talking about GHG at the G8 meeting.
CO2 and NEETs are the same problem who should be solved immediately! Only Abe has hawkish idea while other leaders have dove methods, in order to solve neets.
Actually Bush has beein talking about global warming for some time. He used to deny the existence of global warming, like some republicans still do, you know. But his IQ is below 85, so he doesn't quite understand it.
Why would any sane person ever put their faith in another human who claims that a higher power speaks directly to or through them? It is the crudest, most obvious con ever invented. So sad.
>>678 Hi there! What the hell are you doing still in the US? The rainy season is just around the corner in the Tokyo area. Hurry up, and get your butt over here!
I can't help but think that your mom chose the worst time to visit Japan. Rainy Season. But even in Rainy season that lasts about a month, there are clear days dotted. I hope you are lucky enough blessed with fine days, keira.
What are you looking forward to most in this your coming trip to Japan?
holy, crap, I meant 10pm. how did i screw that up? lol.
>>681 Thank you! Yes, it wasn't until we already paid for the trip that we read it was going to be rainy season! I mostly looking forward to harajuku actually! I want to spend all my money there!
>>687 I've just gotton out of the chatroom. I enjoyed chatting, too, keira. I think I talked with a 4 channeler in the street. Next time, I think I'll get inside the house to see what's going on there. Maybe wierd inside as the rumor has it, but it's worth trying.
OMG...keira was chatting with a guy earlier today. Hopefully he was not a pervert haha gee that is a Chinese chat room...oh I'll try next time then! ^^
>>693 HUH? I just wanted to communicate with one person I know... I might come on net during that time or I might not. I don't know. But hopefully I can talk to her again on live...
>There's also 4-ch.net which is an English copy of 2-ch, but only otaku hang out there. Absurd lies. Some are indeed japanophiles there, but plenty of others are not.
>>699 In this case, 'wap' is short for 'wapanese', which is offensive to the person you are directing it to. It is a conjugation of the words "white" and "Japanese" and used for someone who wishes they were Japanese despite being white. It is usually used for white people who love anime or manga too much, and put very few Japanese words in their otherwise Englishs sentences, which they learn from anime, such as "You are such a baka! >_______________________<;;;;;;;;" or "that anime figure is sooooo kawaiiii!!! ^_______________________^".
The WAP you mention does, indeed, stand for Wireless Access Protocol, but it is a rare subject, I think.
>>704 I am not 703 but let me ask you another question. You said fap is sound related to masterbation. Is it related to girl's or man's masterbation? If it is man's, then when is the sound made? While rubbing it or the moment of ejaculation? I'm a man but when jerking off, I don't make such a sound like "fap."
I have to admit I feel like an idiot, while writing this post... lol
>>534 イギリス人 sorry for the late post. i basically agree with you. but i have my own idea. let me explain. i think we can't separate between sexuality and childishness completely.
i don't know much about british actress. let me raise marilin monroe who is thought to be the sexiest woman in the west.
i don't know what exactly sounds childish or not in english. but for me, monroe's way of talikng sounds childish and fool. speaking with a lisp in high tone. she looks dumb in her movies. her way of walking looks strange. monroe looks mature in appearance . she pretened to be dumb as well. i think being dumb is relevant to childishness.
even if western world has stronger preference to mature women than japan, i think western world also love childish elements in attractive women.
hoshino aki has both elements. bigboobs and loli behaviour.
>>535 godaigo's composer, takekawa yukihide is an alumni of the most prestigious state-run foreign language university. gogaigo has a couple of american musicians. so there was no langauge barrier for godaigo.
personally gogaigo looks natural. they behave smart. takekawa's partner , micky yoshino has an academic backround in music, too. he studied in us.
many japanese rock musicians try to imitate western rock band as hard as possible , like larc en ciel. strange rolling tongue vocalist , strange outfits , strange makeup trying to look like white people ガイジン etc. in fact, they are following their idols in the 80's british rockband. yougsters don't know 80's music. so they look new to many japanese.
>>706 Sorry, but I am not an authority on this subject, so I am unable to help you further. All I can say is it is related more to male than female. In these discussions, people tend to say a female sounds more like "shlick".
Haha, you may worry worry too much about thinking you sound stupid, but I sound like a pervert!
>>708 You're right that most men do like a certain degree of childishness in a woman. I think it's to do with power and dominance, and a wish to feel as if they're protecting someone who needs it (even if they don't). Perhaps it is a ploy - or even natural bahaviour in order to bond quickly with a man, and so have little need to fend for herself. I agree with you about Marilyn Monroe as well - she may have acted dumb and dependant, but she managed to gain the attention of many rich and powerful men.
>>709 Hmm... I'm not so sure that the makeup is trying to make them look like white foreigners, but was more of a 'style' thing; David Bowie did it in the late 60's. I have to admit though, even if they did get inspiration from other bands, there are unique elements which make it stand out from our styles of rock and make it enjoyable, which British rock bands of today lack.
>>711 Hyde is thought to be like caucasian in japan.
Gackt even paint his face white and bleach his hair blond and wear blue contact lens. I admit he is handsome. but weird.
Cultural admixture is good point in japanese culture. But when real people do it, it's shameful. In mangas, animes, pc games , imagination works as possible as it can.
>>712 That really surprises me. People who know who Hyde is, here, hardly think of him as anything other than Japanese. However, I must admit Gackt is weird. His interviews are sometimes interesting, but I cannot stand his music. His style, however, is very confusing. I have seen him, as you say, when he has white makeup and bleached hair, but also when he has had a hairstyle with 'cornrows', which is generally a black thing. Perhaps he thinks that a mix of styles will gain attention from many ethnicities. It is not how I'd approach it, but it seems to be working quite well for him.
>>713 Hmmm... I looked up Gekidan Shiki and it took me to a theatre group website, which seems to perform predominantly Western productions. Is this the one you mean?
it's suprising dokyun harajuku performers embodied japanese traditional dancing style. they knew japanese cultere more than armchair inteligent critics.
By the way, do you guys know the clip of song, change from british new wave rock band ,tears for fears? in the clip, a group or men in the hoods wearing noh mask , start dancing. they are raising hands alternately in simultaneous move. they are apparently doing bonodori move.
Hello again! If you guys want to chat again, I'll be on again at maybe... 1pm-3pmJapanese time (my time it will be 10pm-midnight)
>>712 I've seen Hyde and Gackt and have noticed that they are more outgoing with their fashion tastes, but I never thought they were trying to be white. They are musicians, so they probably travel a lot and see interesting styles that they want to try out.
>>702 lol, I hope you don't think I'm a Japanophile since I use emoticons sometimes. xD Oh well, maybe I am. All cultures are very interesting,but I have easy access to Japanese culture.So maybe that's why I like it. Americans don't really have much of a culture, except media culture. ;__;
>>722 There's nothing wrong with being a Japanophile, or enjoying the cultures of any other country - it's only when someone wishes to forsake what they are and be fully another nationality that it becomes something shameful, at least in my eyes.
As for Hamasaki Ayumi, she is quite attractive, but does wear far too much makeup, and she does look a little creepy in some pictures, but it's still obvious what ethnicity she is just by glancing at her.
>>725 they are exceptional. they are also the targets of ridicule in japan.
they are called yamanba. they somewhat do it intentionally for attention regardless of good or bad impression. generally less beautiful, less confident girls tend to put on such weird makeups. they are desparate and catching a wave is easy thing.
【 Achievement in the U.S. House of Representatives 】 Not passed : Resolution on letting Japan apologize for the comfort women Passed : Resolution on letting people know a broccoli is tasty and good for health
many japanese talents are said to look like whites(外人) here in japan. like hirai ken, hamasaki ayumi. But actually they only look partly like caucasian. they don't look like european at all.
>>737 why do you think so? information from 2ch? i admit saitama is high crime rate prefecture and also brings bad cultures to tokyo. actually many gangsters in cities like ikebukuro was saitama people.
incumbent governer ueda tried hard to clamp down crime and has succeeded a lot.
but don't stretch the image . though saitama is statically unsafe prefecture, you won't feel big differnece when in saitama.
>>738 Sorry, I was just making a judgement based on a silly flash animation. I know nothing about prefectural crime rates. When I was a university student I was in a town called Middlesbrough, and the crime rate was absolutely terrible! A couple people even got murdered just outside the university. There are so many fake beggars and drug addicts.
Middlesbrough was worse than anything I had heard about Saitama. Sorry if I caused any offence.

>>741 The place I was talking about in >>740 is in the North-East of England, and the population is often ignorant enough to be very racist. Most people of other ethnicities tend to live further to the south, so the population is a higher percentage of white. I think the towns most associated with racism and extremism here are Bradford and Keighley, where during local elections, the BNP (British Nationalist Party) has received a higher percentage of votes than anywhere else. The BNP is known for its extreme racist policies. As for the economy, it was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, but most of the workers were miners or factory labourers, who earned very little. A lot of people here live in government-provided homes, and live off welfare, doing no work, and having a detrimental effect on society.
england is awesome.. i went to london when i was a kid.. iirc i ate a boiled egg in teh morning, and stepped in some faecal matter in teh night cuz it was so dark ppl were laughin at me.. i did not cry
American Idol's winner Jordin Spark is very fat. Why are a lot of American's fat? Is that because they don't have much of self-control, as indicated in their foreign policy of meddling with the internal affairs of other countries?
>>767 You may get people on the streets calling you names such as 'chink', since they are ignorant and believe anyone who is from Eastern Asia is Chinese. There may be a risk of being pushed around. The worst that would happen may be a light beating. These towns have nothing interesting in them anyway though, so most people stay clear of them.
Once I was on a train, coming back home from the South, and there was this guy in a wheelchair who started talking to me. He had just been let out of jail. I asked why he was in a wheelchair, and he said he stabbed a man from India (not fatally), just because he was from India. He was very stupid though, because there were 8 of them in the group, so they beat him and broke his ankles. It just shows how stupid racists are here.
If they challenged me a fight in the town, I'd tell them I am a cousin of Jackey Chen, Hong Kong kunfoo(kunhoo?)star and show them some quick punches right infront of thier eyes. I don't think this would work, but worth a try. hehe.
I've read a travel story in which its writer was surrounded by locals who chanted "Jackey Chen! Jackey Chen!" somewhere in the world. They for some reason know the kunhoo star, maybe from movies, and whenever they see Asians, they call them Jackie Chen.
I don't believe there is such place in Japan, where you get stabbed just because you're white or black or something like that. How come nobody do anything to get the situation better in those areas, not just staying away from them How come it's ok for a political party to even exist whose platform is basically racist principles That's stupid. Don't they teach in school racism is bad?
Yeah, that could work. But realistically maybe they just pull a gun out and shoot you...? Come to think of it, is it ok to have guns in the UK? I don't hear much about it. I mean Ive never heard about shooting sprees in the UK, like in the US. By the way, Cho is one of my heroes. ^-^
I heard the same kind of story. Aska of Chage and Aska said he experienced the same kinda thing. I want to be treated like Jakie Chen. Maybe those people who treat any Asian as Jackie are just taunting them, though.
>>771 Democracy in our country enables such political parties to exist, though I believe neo-Nazism is illegal. Morality is supposed to be developed throughout schooling, to en extent, but family backgrounds also have a big influence. It seems that the most racist people are generally the lower classes, a lot of which live in the areas I mentioned. Even though a lot of them live off government welfare, they still blame immigrants for leeching off the government too, which is very hypocritical - especially since a lot of our immigrant population does work and do contribute to the good of our society.
>>772 Aside from a very few exceptions, guns in the UK are resticted to law enforcement and military. However, there have been a couple cases of gun crime these past few years. In 1996, an unemployed Scottish man walked into a primary school and murdered 16 children, an adult, and then killed himself. After this, even tighter gun laws were passed. There was another case of a shooting in 1987, I believe, in Hungerford, but I don't really know the details.
>>770 That is a very strange story! In the West, though, Jackie Chan is a very well known actor, but known mostly for his work in Hollywood movies. It's his Hong Kong movie background which put him there though, since his fighting choreography was often very elaborate and sometimes whimsical.
>>775 I didn't know who Aska was, but he looks nothing like Jackie Chan!
>>770 lol, he probably came down here, to Australia. Just as England has their filthy chavs, we have filthy ferals. They're like chavs but there's more open space, so they ride their shitty motorbikes and wear shitty t-shirts instead of shitty hooded jackets.
When I assume my rightful role as leader, I'm executing anyone who earns less than a certain amount, as well as the unemployed. It'll help keep streets clean and the miserable lower classes in order.
>>770 Gun crimes do happen in Britain, too. As for a shooting spree, in 1996 in Scotland, 16 kindergarten children and their teacher were killed by a local unemployed man.
>>778 Yeah. Bogans, Westies, Ferals, they all fit the same character, but it depends on where you are. Bogans is pretty universal, but I don't like using it cause the stupid things have started taking a liking to the name. Ferals fits them nicely, because they breed like them and their children act like them. I'm not even upper class. Australia is supposed to be a working man's paradise or some shit, but the dregs of our society are pathetic. Since you get them in England, too, I suppose it's the same everywhere.
>>776 Thank you very much for all the replies. I didn't think of problems with immigrants resulting in many racist people. So that's the major cause ;immigrants robbing them of their jobs, or at least, some think that way and blame them for their bad situations..
Japan don't accept immigrants like they do in Europe, so that kind of problems haven't happend, yet. That's why I really had no idea. Japan is talking about their shrinking and aging population. and possiblity of accepting more foreign workers. So we will have same kind of problems down the road... hmm. scary.
>>781 They might blame the immigrants for robbing them of their jobs, but they are unwilling to work in the first place. A lot of them are, as you say here, NEETs, and don't even try to get a job. In my job, there are quite a few immigrants who I supervise, and they are generally harder and better workers.
>>780 You're right, there. I really wish the government would clean up their act and give them something to do, rather than than stay at home all day, or go out and vandalise things and harrass people.
It may sound a bit odd for a Japanese to ask this question, but does anyone know a good Japanese history book in ENGLISH? The reason I'm asking is that there are a lot of situations where I'm asked about Japanese history by foreigners, and although I know the history in Japanese, I don't know the corresponding English words e.g. Feudallord for Daimyo, Shogunate for Bakufu, etc. etc. I'm looking for a very basic book. I've tried Amazon, but could only find books on some specific topics such as history of tea ceremony, Geisha and so on. I'd very much appreciate you guys help! Thanks in advance.
>>784 I don't know of any books on Japanese history, but I remember learning a little bit about Japanese history in school and our history book used a lot of Japanese terms, like daimyo, for example.
>>790 I see. Thank you for the information. Then maybe I should stick to the original Japanese terms and explain the meaning of them, instead of trying to find the English equivalent of the terms.
>>777 Australia has a certain amount of immigrant population from China or other Asian countries, including Japan, right?
What are white people's reaction to those Asian people? I think Asians are relatively deligent and work hard so it's not the case that they are unemployed and hang around in the streets, I think. Do they blend in well with Australian culture or are they treated as outsiders? What's your opinion?
イギリス人, You are looking for Japanese movies to watch, right? I know someone introduced you to some movies, including 大日本人 shot by a Japanese comedian and participated in this past Cannes Film Festival. Kitano Takeshi participated this time, too. These two movies got the most Japanese media coverage, I think. I was surprised to know that a Japanese film shot by a Japanese 38 year old woman won the second best award at the Cannes this year. You can check her out on the link below, if you are interested.
>>795 No, I've never been to Okinawa although I've always wanted to go there. BTW, is it true that people living in Okinawa are not very good at swimming? I've heard that they only look at the sea but seldom go in it, and those who actually play with water are all from the main land!
>>796 Thank you very much for this information! I always mean to check out the films that show at Cannes, but never remember when it is.
I had never heard of Kawase Naomi before either, so it may be interesting to see her past work as well, as a previous movie seems to have done well. The trailer looks interesting, but also a little confusing, but I guess watching the whole movie might make it fit together. Haha, when someone mention 'Dainihonjin' earlier in the thread, I had no idea it was a movie, so thanks also for pointing that out. As usual, I was also unaware of 'Kantoku Banzai', which is strange because Kitano's movies are often quite well publicised, even over here.
Quite recently, I got hold of a movie called 'Kwaidan' (怪談), but have yet to watch it.
Have any of you ever heard anyone say "dweeb" in real life? I've heard it on TV shows many times, but not one time in real life that I can recall. I think it's TV-only word.
>>825 In generally most of South America, it is a word used for female genitalia. It is often used in phrases such as "Concha es tu madre!" or "La concha de tu madre!" (I'll let you figure them out). Insulting a person's mother is one of the gravest of insults in Spanish and Portuguese countries.
Yes yes English speaking people loves to refer to the lower parts of body, like a cunt or a penis or an ass or crap or shit or ... So imature, in my opinion.
>>832 You have a point! I've felt the same way since I started to understand English curse expressions. As a matter of fact, we don't have those lower parts of the body-related curse expressions in Japanese. The worst I can think of is "Omae-no ka-san debeso! (Your mother has an outie belly botton!), lol
"Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, Malay, and red, and he placed them on separate continents.... The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."
In reality, we were all apes living in the trees in Africa. And at one time, one of the apes climbed down a tree and started running on the ground, and then eventually some of the groups of ape started to live on the ground. One day one of the apes started to walk with his hindlegs. They all started to walk with two legs.
They started to travel for foods and some of the groups of apes left Africa, and they spread to all around the world. On the process, depending on where you started to live, the number of melanins in your skins varied. The more your skin is darker, the less white. We Asians are just in the middle.
All I want to say to you is you gotta be careful not to fall down from the edges of the flat earth. lol.
What is this copy/paste nonsense that's been going on in the last few messages? Let's have a real discussion instead of posting garbage. What do you think we should talk about?
>>832 Shit is used very frequently in every language, i think... Though when it comes to variety nothing can beat English shit though since it can mean anything. And, shit is not immature. Shit is timeless and transcendent.
>>836 Don't forget chinkasu. That's about the only one though.
Let me tell you guys a funny story about panda's poo. I don't remember much about detals so maybe I am partly wrong about my description.
There's a popular program called 探偵ナイトスクープ aired at night every week. One father didn't believe that panda's poo doesn't smell at all. So his family memberes tried to make him understand it doesn't smell. In the TV program family memberes went to a zoo to get pandas poos. They managed to get them and shaped them like dumplings and served on a plate. When their father came home from work, they urged him to eat them. He noticed something was wrong with the dumplings but didn't imagined they were actullay pandas poos because they didn't smell at all.
i think this would make a good slogan for this thread, it sounds aggressive, suggesting that if you want to improve your english, you need to go all out berserk like when grabbing a turd. also, turd is a symbol of luck in japan which is cool for a slogan
or, if you can come up with a good slogan for this thread please post it because slogans are cool
talk about hats?? what a lame proposition. maybe the lamest proposition ever anyway, I hate hats because my head is so big that when i wear one, whatever it is, i look retarded. thank you.
>>849 I have a slogan suggestion. How about "grab the turd"? It sounds strong and forward-leaning, but at the same time, describes the pointlessness of this thread? What do you think?
I watched the same episode of Tantei Knight Scoop. It turned out, the panda turd they grabed from China was just as stinky as any other turd around. The funniest part was how they found out that. They actually went to China and one of its panda sanctuallys, and guess what!
>>850 The poos didn't smell bad at all but the father noticed something was wrong with dumplings so he didn't try eating.
>>854 Oh. Maybe you are right about their going to China to get panda's poos. But if my memory serves right, poos didn't smell bad at all. I remember the scene where they were all amazed by the fact that pandas' poos don't smell bad. To be exact it smells a bit like bamboo leaves.
>>856 You are right! I now remember! My memory totally served me wrong there. Yeah, it was totallyl kind of anti climatic that panda crap smelled just like bamboo they ate, and that was somehow funny!!
>>852 I am sorry that hats are such a sore subject for you. However, I have seen websites with hats for people with larger than average heads. If you get a really big hat, maybe it would make your head look smaller.
>>851 All sorts of hats, really. Fedoras, Trilbys and Bucket hats mainly, though with a few more unusual hats, such as a couple from Libya, a Stetson, and a few Russian, one of which is from the military.
>>859 I gooled the hats you mentioned, and wondered what matching clothes you wear with those types of hats. Because I think if you pick wrong clothes, you will end up looking kind of dumb. Or, are you bald or something? So you wear hats to conceal it, lol
>>865 Bonjour. Tu est francais ou est-ce simplement que tu aimes le francais? Je suis desire, mais mon francais est pauvre, et je ne puex pas parler de beaucoup de choses en francais.
>>862 Really wish I did have a deerstalker hat like that! However, finding one which looks good is proving difficult.
>>863 I don't really have anything to wear which matches the last three types of hat, but as for the others it really just depends. The colours really have to match or at least complement each other. The Trilby and Fedoras are usually worn with either a suit or a 'long coat'. Depending on colour, they can also go quite well with a casual jacket. I'm far from being bald, but hats are good for a little extra warmth and protection from the rain, and it is often cold and wet here.
You're right though - a mismatching hat (in both colour or style) usually looks very stupid.
>>871 We hear that a British person carries with him a very neatly and tightly rolled up umbrella but never opens it. We also hear that there is an oppupation specialized in rolling up umbrellas. I don't know if they are just rumors, but do you wear a hat to prevent rain even if you have your umbrella with you?
You are talking about 100 years war? But British had been completely defeated by a single saint girl, Joan of Arc. Plus King John had lost many parts of England territory in French.
>>878 Really, the English army defeated by a little girl? Is that before or after we roasted her like a pig at the stake? This isn't anime. In the West, we decimate moe girls!
>>875 Hmm... there are two types of umbrella that we carry - one is the short, compact and lightweight umbrella which can easily fit into a pocket, and the other is quite long, and often more elaborately decorated in terms of handle and print. I think these are the ones you hear of more often, and are sometimes used as canes. However, the occupation for rolling up umbrellas... I had not heard of that before! Maybe it is a cult.
>>881 Simply because they hate us. As you say, they only pretend not to know any English, but really they do.
>>899 If you posted topics that you wanted to talk about, I'm sure people would respond to you. If you don't have anything you want to talk about, though, I guess it can't be helped... BTW, if this isn't too personal, what's your college major? I don't remember you ever saying it.
Yeah, that's the problem. I don't want to just waltz on in and change the subject. xD I'd rather just comment.
The reason I haven't said my major is because I don't have one yet. >.> I want to Minor in Japanese though. For my major, I want to do something art-related, since that is my field I'm good at. (I got first place for the junior devision at the state fair), but my mom won't let me go to art school, since there is "no money when it comes to art". SIGH. So, I'd have to pay for my own classes if I wanted to. >.>
I'd rather join this conversation... looks cool It's so glad to see someone's gonna choose a way rather than attending uni... like going art colleges...
>>898 If you go to Roppongi, you'll meet a lot of girls who fall for black males just because they are black. If you happen to be black and have been to Roppongi but never been successful, that simply means you are not attractive, LOL
Rainy season finally started yesterday.....but it was very sunny today and the mercury rose up to 30 degrees. We'll probably face shortage of water this summer.
>>899 I think these threads are more interesting when there are many topics active at once. It makes it feel like it's worth replying, because there's always more to say.
>>902 Guess I can sort of relate to that. Originally, I'd taken all these subjects at college (senior highschool equivalent in the US, I think) to try and get a place in a games programming degree at university. Getting there, my mind had changed. It was now an arts course I wanted (digital media - 3D modelling, animation, some life drawing with traditional media, etc.). Two years on, and decided I'd get absolutely nowhere once I graduated. Figured I'd made a mistake turning a hobby into a potential job, because it had taken all the fun out of it. Actually, it had nothing to do with what you said after all, aside from being related to art. Oh well!
If you're good enough though, there's plenty of money to be made as long as you get into the right market for it.
>>911 It's been dry almost all year so far up until three days ago, and hasn't stopped raining since. The temperature is only around 18-21 degrees though, which is normal for this time of year. In past years it has been very dry and hot during summer, and the government placed rectrictions on water usage, even though there is a huge reservoir nearby.
I saw a video of a farmer who built a trebuchet and spent his days flinging porcelain toilets across a nearby river at his neighbours. I wish I didn't live in the city, and could live the simple life...
> 902 > 912 Not sure about UK but that's absolutely correct in the US. I got some friends working in the art feild like conservator, curator, dealer, archivist, and such. For most of positions, they normally require master degrees at least. You need to invest tons of money for it and end up with making the least mount. lol
Plus, it's way too small society. You gotta get along with whoever that is even some gay or elegant snobby people, otherwise you will get banned in thier society seriously. Only a good thing is that there are so many good-looking females I guess. lol But you gotta see their nasty sides most of time tho.
>>918 What kind of wine is it? If it's expensive, you should drink it all before smashing the glass else it'll go to waste!
>>917 To work in the art field in positions such as those, in the UK, still requires qualifications such as masters degrees, yes. Basically whoever has the most money and can talk the most about nothing would get the job. However, working as an actual artist is a very different matter (unless they do modern "art"), and artists can get a good job with the right exposure of their work.
Jesus would be too busy plying little children with alcohol to come to my house. Besides, I'm part Phoenecian. I'd just sacrifice him to Baal or something.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Kmn5OFTJ4A hello how are you all living?. Please take a look at this video Her name is Annasophia Robb. I think she is the cutiest girl ever in this world. What do you think?
>>907 It was for charcoal actually. But I paint, sketch, chalk, pastel, and ink as well.
>>910 Actually, I love hats, but I don't think I look that great in them. xD I don't know much about hats... but I do love the winter kind that have flaps to cover the ears. n_n
>>912 >>923 Actually, It relates well to what I'm thinking! I've always been worried about that too...turning a hobby into a job. Either you'll love your job, or you'll start hating your hobby.lol
What I want to do doesn't nessicarily HAVE to revolve around art, but I want to have a job were I am free to be creative in an artistic way. There are so many jobs that can do this for me-alltypes- but I haven't found out which yet.
>>940 Thanx for the reply about what you got the prize for. I wish I could see your art work very much, but I guess this is the limitatino of 2CH......oh well, plz let us know if you ever open up your cyber art gallery. I'd like to visit it!
I like the Russian hat that looks like one carries a racoon on his head!
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=9006414844032752909 hello how you guys living? check this google video clip i ve got. it's michal moore's new movie sicko this movie is really great, and describes how greedy americans are, so much so that they even dump patients on the street who cant pay for the treatment LOL poor americans are actually willing to die for greedy rich people, it's so funny let's watch it and laugh at americans.
the funniest thing is ,even after this movie, americans won't do anything about their healthcare system. maybe greedy rich people will get even more greedy rich LOL and not so funny thing is that Japan is following suit in this greedy american ways... the rich get richer, the poor get poorer...
>>942 Hillary Clinton was very keen on passing the bill on the universal health insurance, so if she is elected as President of US, the situation should change dramatically.
In Japanese parliament, a gentleman in military uniform stands on the platform with a script in his hand, and at the front of him more than hundred councilors salute him solemnly. But in the next moment, councilors are muddled up much, because the gentleman suddenly roles his script and looks them through it like a telescope with loose smile...
He was called "Emperor (Tenno) Taisho" and he was actually an idiot, who cannot perform his task as emperor. This "telescope-incident" has been told privately, because in Japan it's forbidden to speak of scandals about imperial family officially.
Such idiocy of him was hereditary and took root in the traditional incest by pre-Meiji emperors. They took wives from and gave daughters to only a few related noble houses.
It's rumor that also current emperor's cousin has a mild idiocy. And a misbirth of Masako, the wife of prince might be actually an induced abortion because the baby had some invalid or idiocy.
>>940 Ah, freedom to be creative, that's exactly it! My main worry was the possibility of having to take a job where I would draw and animate, but where I'd have little say in the concept or design, restricting my own pleasure of creativity.
Far above, you guys were talking about how French people hate the language of English, UK or US. In general European people don't like US because of US's arrogance represented by unilatral approach to international affairs such as the invasion of Iraq or it's attitude toward global warming issues. But in my opinion, I don't think French people don't like UK and US as much as they claim, and I don't think other European countries don't like US as much as they claim, either. After all, they are all white and in western community and share same value, same religion.I've read a survey that shows Japan is considered to be a friend and trustworthy as a nation among European countires. But Japan doesn't share the same value, same religion with western community so on person-to-person level, it's difficult for Japanese to make friends with people from western countries plus there is a language barrier. America is disliked by UK and France because of the reason above, but on a personal level, American can make friends with French and British people far more easily than Japanese can. My point is even if America is disliked as a nation and Japan is liked as a nation, on person-to-person level, Japanese feel isolated when, say, there's a party where people from various European countries plus US, and Japanese gather. People from overseas here in this thread may like Japanese but average American, British and people from other European countries don't interested in Japan at all although they are interested in countries of western community. Kind of sad as a Japanese myself.
>>954 You could summarize your crap in 3 sentences, idiot: Europe and the US love and hate each other more than they do Japan mainly because they are westeners; they don't really give a fuck about Japan and Japanese; I'm sad :(
>>954 The French and the UK have a longstanding rivalry, which began with the Norman invasion of 1066. Once the nobility integrated itself into the then-current society, they did not consider themselves French, and were considered a rogue branch by the ruling class of mainland France. The British then went to war with France and took a large amount of land, even with fewer numbers and less knowledge of the terrain. This is what the French resent most about Britain. If you mention the year 1415 to them, they sometimes become really agitated.
It is true, however, that the UK and USA are on somewhat better terms than we both pretend we are. There is that long-standing rivalry from when the USA became independent of the UK and wasted all that nice tea in the harbour, and always complain and moan about and insult the British on the Internet (Britain usually does it back though), but when face to face, the people are generally a lot friendlier.
There is always a barrier between most Asian countries and the West, though, because of culture and language, as you say. However, there is much tension between religions over here, and I don't just mean between Christianity and Islam, but with the tension between different types of Christian, as demonstrated in Northern Ireland.
Someone posted here few months ago, whose English was typically Japanese English. So a native speaker didn't understand his English at all. But I clearly understood what he was saying because I am a Japanese.
At break of day when that man drove away, I was waiting I cross the street to her house and she opened the door She stood there laughing I felt the knife in my hand and she laughed no more My, my, my delilah Why, why, why delilah So before they come to break down the door Forgive me delilah I just couldnt take any more
I can't get enough of the Red Army's rendition of this song :)
>>969 The weirdest English comes from a city in the north of England called Newcastle. They speak a hard to understand dialect of English called 'Geordie'. It gets even worse because they drink a lot of alcohol there, so even if you can understand a bit of Geordie dialect, it then becomes drunken Geordie dialect.
Also, a question to anyone: Could you tell me what a 'nanashi' is, please?
>>957 I didn't know that French and UK's rivalry dates so far back as 11th century. I just thought the reason why France doesn't like the language of English is that English invades French culture. I've read something like, TV programs in which English is spoken have to be restricted to a particular percentage among all programs aired in Franch.
>>973, >>974, >>980 Thanks for your explanations! I'm a failure at reading Kanji.
>>976 I'd hardly count /b/tards as elite members; most of them are retarded. At least there is occasionally some cleverly amusing stuff from there though.
>>975 I hadn't heard about this restriction. I'll do a little reading into that.
>>982 Off course we eat cheese. My favorite is Stilton blue cheese with Porto wine or Parmesan with champagne!
btw, I just saw on TV that there is a so called "cheese festival" in UK where a cheese master throws a ball of cheese from the top of an extreme steep hill (probably 70 degrees) and 20 reckless men run down the hill following the cheese. The first one to reach the ground level is the winner.
This year, a young japanese comedian participated in the race and he got the second place with sprained ankle. It was really fun to watch.
When non asian people talk about japanese food it's either sushi or ramen but TONKATSU deserves more atention imo. When served as Katsu Curry or Katsudon, it beats sushi hands down. Sushi gets boring fast. Katsudon/Katsu Curry I could eat everyday. You should try them.
