Hanna Kim, Shibuya's former executive assistant, contends in the suit, filed Nov. 17, that Shibuya ordered her to make copies of numerous Toyota documents and mail them to Hyundai headquarters in Korea. The lawsuit also alleges sexual harassment by Shibuya against Kim. Kim alleges she complained to upper management about copying Toyota documents that included the words "Do Not Duplicate." Kim was told that if she "didn't stir up anything," she would be promoted, according to the lawsuit, filed in Orange County (Calif.) Superior Court. Added a Hyundai source: "It was not a few documents. It was binders and binders of information." The individual spoke anonymously for fear of reprisal from the company.

Wednesday, November 29, 2006 The global problem of human trafficking in the sex industry touched down in Providence last night as a ranking police official outlined the growth of brothels masquerading as massage parlors in the city in recent years. Maj. Stephen Campbell, commander of the Providence police investigative bureau, informed a rapt audience that there are about 75 to 100 South Korean women providing sexual gratification to men in “10 to 11 brothels” scattered across Providence.
Campbell said the women work, sleep and eat in the dingy massage parlors that are run from storefronts near the State House, downtown and on South Main Street. He said his detectives have tried to question the South Korean women who work in the local brothels, but their work is difficult because most of the women don’t speak English, and, even if they do, they are reluctant to speak to a police officer.
Between 14,000 and 17,500 people are trafficked into the United States every year. And just as they are on foreign soil, many of them are forced into sex slavery. In 2005, the FBI, Immigration Custom Enforcement Agents, and members of the NYPD teamed up to conduct an investigation that resulted in the breakup of Korean sex slave rings up and down the East Coast, and in California. In all, they made 30 arrests and rescued 70 victims -- a small but important victory in a huge battle. There have been many more raids like these over the years, and little by little, people are working to solve the problem of sex slavery abroad and in the U.S. Although the raids may not seem to put a huge dent in the problem, experts say they actually prevent sex slavery in many cases. When a brothel owner sees another pimp or madam receive a jail sentence, they grow wary of continuing their own business.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2003454521_korea30.html The State Department's newly released list of no-go American goodies blends knowledge and legend of the diminutive strongman's high-end tastes. Denying Kim what he craves, the theory goes, might prompt better behavior from a government that reportedly spends nearly a million dollars a year on rare cognac. The U.S. list of more than 60 items reads like a letter to Santa from the dictator who has everything. Yachts, water scooters, race cars, motorcycles, even station wagons and Segways won't be crossing the border this season There shall be no more DVD players and televisions larger than 29 inches for the man whose film library of 20,000 titles betrays a yen for Bond and Rambo.
Kim's former chef has written that the man known as "Dear Leader" fancies sushi, Iranian caviar and shark-fin soup. He is said to have every grain of rice inspected for perfection. But he won't be served any of it on American china, which is on the list. After dinner, he often enjoys a glass of fine cognac — so the United States put lead crystal and liquor on the list, too.

The Koreans like to pretend to be Japanese, so that is another aspect that sets the Korean massage parlor apart from Chinese or American massage parlors. Police raid five spas in prostitution sting Clayton County Police raided five spa house on Tara Boulevard at once Thursday night in a prostitution sting. “Prostitution is a problem on the Tara corridor,” said Interim Chief Jeff Turner.
The women sat on a couch in the front waiting room, whispering in Korean while the officers checked the rooms and read over a packet of photocopied laws to determine which were applicable.
There were four security cameras in the building. In the office next the monitor was a stack of business cards from taxi and limo services, a copy of “Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul” and a United States History written in Korean.
Sung Soo Kim, president of Korean American Small Business Service Center of New York, says it's hard to change centuries-old eating habits. He runs a state-approved food safety education program and has delivered seminars to the Korean community about food laws.
Corby says education is key — along with fines — in getting owners to pass inspections and stop buying and selling illegal food. “Immigrants coming from the Third World would not be schooled in the issues of cross contamination and would not intuitively know hygiene standards,” said Dr. Pascal James Imperato, a former city health commissioner who spent six years in Africa with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

NKorean nuke test and Japanese gambling habits intersect at pachinko (AP) For the pachinko industry, however, North Korea's image problems and the sanctions have not been a business issue, officials say.
While ethnic Koreans may worry about how relatives in the North are faring without the cash they used to take to them, their main concerns as businessmen lie elsewhere.
"Yes, there are a lot of ethnic Korean operators, but the industry is not at all concerned about the sanctions issue," said Takaaki Sasaki, spokesman for Zennichiyuren, an industry organization. "We're not hearing about anyone losing business because of the missiles or the nuclear test."

Korean Nukes Linked to Japanese Pinball Pachinko, a form of pinball deeply loved in Japan, is an industry run by ethnic Koreans, and experts have long believed that the revenues are a vital source of hard currency for the impoverished regime in North Korea. Now, as Kim Jong Il's nuclear weapons program gathers pace, Japan's attitude is hardening, and that includes shutting out the ferry on which money is believed to be hand-carried from Japan to North Korea.

Scottsdale and the man accused of traveling a record 147 mph in a 2006 Hyundai Sonata family sedan reached a plea agreement less than a week before the case was to go to trial today. His highest speed triggered contentions from certified Hyundai technicians and performance-car experts who told the Tribune the compact family car of South Korean origin couldn’t go that fast Mike Castillo, certified technician at Larry Miller Hyundai in Peoria, also said that the tires on the car — not rated for 147 mph — would’ve flown apart if the car reached that speed.
http://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_international/176492.html Posted on : Dec.6,2006 Sex trade in Southeast Asia sees increase of Korean males A growing number of South Korean males in their late teens and early 20s are going to Southeast Asian countries to buy sex, as the crackdown on the sex trade here is intensifying, a report showed. According to the report, based on a field survey of 116 prostitutes in Thailand and the Philippines, not just the usual demographic of men in their 30s and 40s but males in their late teens and early 20s are going to countries in the region in increasing numbers to buy sex from minors. In addition, some male South Korean college students that have gone there for study reportedly find female minors and exchange sex for a place for the girls to live.
The survey was conducted by the Naeil Women's Center for Youth from July to September this year. Among the prostitutes surveyed, there were some that dreamed of coming to South Korea. Most of them want to get married to their South Korean "boyfriends," but many are abandoned when the South Koreans return to their country.
Those that have been impregnated during their relationship with South Koreans become single moms and have to seek help from charitable religious organizations.
In addition, according to the report, 68 percent of the prostitutes surveyed said that they were physically abused by their South Korean "clients" during sexual intercourse. They testified that many Korean men were "obsessed" with having sex with minors, and that they tend to refuse to wear condoms.
Some of them also said that Koreans forced them to sell or take drugs.
The Gender Equality and Family Committee of the National Assembly will hold a forum on December 7, where members will listen to a presentation by Filipino women's right activists. During the meeting, news items will be presented regarding female Filipino minors being rescued from Korean-run brothels in the Philippines.

Conyers embraced his comrades in this group with the same enthusiasm and support he gave during the Cold War to the Soviet-backed World Peace Council.
