1:1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
1:2 Abraham became the father of Isaac. Isaac became the father of Jacob. Jacob became the father
of Judah and his brothers.
1:3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron.
Hezron became the father of Ram.
1:4 Ram became the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon became the father of Salmon.

1:12 After the exile to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel. Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel.

1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this; for after his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph,
before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
1:19 Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example,
intended to put her away secretly.
1:20 But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream,saying, “Joseph,
son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
1:21 She shall bring forth a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”
1:22 Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying,
1:23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son. They shall call his name Immanuel;”
which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”
1:24 Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took his wife to himself;
1:25 and didn’t know her sexually until she had brought forth her firstborn son. He named him Jesus.

1:18 イエス・キリストの誕生は次のようであった。その母マリヤはヨセフの妻と決まっていたが、
ふたりがまだいっしょにならないうちに、聖霊によって身重になったことがわかった。
1:19 夫のヨセフは正しい人であって、彼女をさらし者にはしたくなかったので、内密に去らせようと決めた。
1:20 彼がこのことを思い巡らしていたとき、主の使いが夢に現われて言った。「ダビデの子ヨセフ。
恐れないであなたの妻マリヤを迎えなさい。その胎に宿っているものは聖霊によるのです。
1:21 マリヤは男の子を産みます。その名をイエスとつけなさい。この方こそ、
ご自分の民をその罪から救ってくださる方です。」
1:22 このすべての出来事は、主が預言者を通して言われた事が成就するためであった。
1:23 「見よ、処女がみごもっている。そして男の子を産む。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれる。」
（訳すと、神は私たちとともにおられる、という意味である。）
1:24 ヨセフは眠りからさめ、主の使いに命じられたとおりにして、その妻を迎え入れ、
1:25 そして、子どもが生まれるまで彼女を知ることがなく、その子どもの名をイエスとつけた。

2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of King Herod, behold,
wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
2:2 “Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him.”
2:3 When King Herod heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
2:4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.
2:5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for this is written through the prophet,
2:6 ‘You Bethlehem, land of Judah, are in no way least among the princes of Judah:
for out of you shall come forth a governor, who shall shepherd my people, Israel.’”*
2:7 Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
2:8 He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, “Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him,
bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him.”

2:1 イエスが、ヘロデ王の時代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになったとき、見よ、
東方の博士たちがエルサレムにやって来て、こう言った。
2:2 「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方はどこにおいでになりますか。私たちは、
東のほうでその方の星を見たので、拝みにまいりました。」
2:3 それを聞いて、ヘロデ王は恐れ惑った。エルサレム中の人も王と同様であった。
2:4 そこで、王は、民の祭司長たち、学者たちをみな集めて、キリストはどこで生まれるのかと問いただした。
2:5 彼らは王に言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者によってこう書かれているからです。
2:6 『ユダの地、ベツレヘム。あなたはユダを治める者たちの中で、決して一番小さくはない。
わたしの民イスラエルを治める支配者が、あなたから出るのだから。』」
2:7 そこで、ヘロデはひそかに博士たちを呼んで、彼らから星の出現の時間を突き止めた。
2:8 そして、こう言って彼らをベツレヘムに送った。「行って幼子のことを詳しく調べ、
わかったら知らせてもらいたい。私も行って拝むから。」

2:9 They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east,
went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
2:10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
2:11 They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and
worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
2:12 Being warned in a dream that they shouldn’t return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
2:13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,
“Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you,
for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.”
2:14 He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,
2:15 and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through
the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

2:9 彼らは王の言ったことを聞いて出かけた。すると、見よ、東方で見た星が彼らを先導し、
ついに幼子のおられる所まで進んで行き、その上にとどまった。
2:10 その星を見て、彼らはこの上もなく喜んだ。
2:11 そしてその家にはいって、母マリヤとともにおられる幼子を見、ひれ伏して拝んだ。そして、
宝の箱をあけて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物としてささげた。
2:12 それから、夢でヘロデのところへ戻るなという戒めを受けたので、別の道から自分の国へ帰って行った。
2:13 彼らが帰って行ったとき、見よ、主の使いが夢でヨセフに現われて言った。「立って、幼子とその母を連れ、
エジプトへ逃げなさい。そして、私が知らせるまで、そこにいなさい。ヘロデがこの幼子を捜し出して殺そうとしています。」
2:14 そこで、ヨセフは立って、夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに立ちのき、
2:15 ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。これは、主が預言者を通して、「わたしはエジプトから、
わたしの子を呼び出した。」と言われた事が成就するためであった。

2:16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry,
and sent out, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all the surrounding countryside,
from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.
2:17 Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
2:18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children;
she wouldn’t be comforted, because they are no more.”
2:19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
2:20 “Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel,
for those who sought the young child’s life are dead.”
2:21 He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
2:22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod,
he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,
2:23 and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets:
“He will be called a Nazarene.”

2:16 その後、ヘロデは、博士たちにだまされたことがわかると、非常におこって、人をやって、
ベツレヘムとその近辺の二歳以下の男の子をひとり残らず殺させた。
その年令は博士たちから突き止めておいた時間から割り出したのである。
2:17 そのとき、預言者エレミヤを通して言われた事が成就した。
2:18 「ラマで声がする。泣き、そして嘆き叫ぶ声。ラケルがその子らのために泣いている。
ラケルは慰められることを拒んだ。子らがもういないからだ。」
2:19 ヘロデが死ぬと、見よ、主の使いが、夢でエジプトにいるヨセフに現われて、言った。
2:20 「立って、幼子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地に行きなさい。
幼子のいのちをつけねらっていた人たちは死にました。」
2:21 そこで、彼は立って、幼子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地にはいった。
2:22 しかし、アケラオが父ヘロデに代わってユダヤを治めていると聞いたので、
そこに行ってとどまることを恐れた。そして、夢で戒めを受けたので、ガリラヤ地方に立ちのいた。
2:23 そして、ナザレという町に行って住んだ。これは預言者たちを通して
「この方はナザレ人と呼ばれる。」と言われた事が成就するためであった。

3:1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
3:2 “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
3:3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying,
“The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight.”
3:4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist.
His food was locusts and wild honey.
3:5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
3:6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them,
“You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
3:8 Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!
3:9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’
for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.

3:1 そのころ、バプテスマのヨハネが現われ、ユダヤの荒野で教えを宣べて、言った。
3:2 「悔い改めなさい。天の御国が近づいたから。」
3:3 この人は預言者イザヤによって、「荒野で叫ぶ者の声がする。
『主の道を用意し、主の通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。』」と言われたその人である。
3:4 このヨハネは、らくだの毛の着物を着、腰には皮の帯を締め、その食べ物はいなごと野蜜であった。
3:5 さて、エルサレム、ユダヤ全土、ヨルダン川沿いの全地域の人々がヨハネのところへ出て行き、
3:6 自分の罪を告白して、ヨルダン川で彼からバプテスマを受けた。
3:7 しかし、パリサイ人やサドカイ人が大ぜいバプテスマを受けに来るのを見たとき、
ヨハネは彼らに言った。「まむしのすえたち。だれが必ず来る御怒りをのがれるように教えたのか。
3:8 それなら、悔い改めにふさわしい実を結びなさい。
3:9 『われわれの先祖はアブラハムだ。』と心の中で言うような考えではいけません。
あなたがたに言っておくが、神は、この石ころからでも、アブラハムの子孫を起こすことがおできになるのです。

3:10 “Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t bring forth
good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
3:11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I,
whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
3:12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor.
He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
3:13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
3:14 But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
3:15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.”
Then he allowed him. 3:16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water:
and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
3:17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

3:10 斧もすでに木の根元に置かれています。だから、良い実を結ばない木は、
みな切り倒されて、火に投げ込まれます。
3:11 私は、あなたがたが悔い改めるために、水のバプテスマを授けていますが、
私のあとから来られる方は、私よりもさらに力のある方です。私はその方のはきものを
脱がせてあげる値うちもありません。その方は、あなたがたに聖霊と火とのバプテスマをお授けになります。
3:12 手に箕を持っておられ、ご自分の脱穀場をすみずみまできよめられます。麦を倉に納め、
殻を消えない火で焼き尽くされます。」
3:13 さて、イエスは、ヨハネからバプテスマを受けるために、ガリラヤからヨルダンにお着きになり、
ヨハネのところに来られた。
3:14 しかし、ヨハネはイエスにそうさせまいとして、言った。「私こそ、あなたからバプテスマを受けるはずですのに、
あなたが、私のところにおいでになるのですか。」
3:15 ところが、イエスは答えて言われた。「今はそうさせてもらいたい。このようにして、
すべての正しいことを実行するのは、わたしたちにふさわしいのです。」そこで、ヨハネは承知した。
3:16 こうして、イエスはバプテスマを受けて、すぐに水から上がられた。すると、天が開け、
神の御霊が鳩のように下って、自分の上に来られるのをご覧になった。
3:17 また、天からこう告げる声が聞こえた。「これは、わたしの愛する子、わたしはこれを喜ぶ。」
